Roz Crowley takes a walk down memory lane and looks back at the Mountain Dew, Ireland’s first ever rock festival. It seems like old hat now, a music festival, but when the first major gathering of music stars arrived to perform in Macroom, County Cork, it changed for ever how music would be enjoyed countrywide. It was a very big deal. Major concert promoters had dismissed the idea of an outdoor one, but a town with a population of 3,000 was fearless, and the result was an unprecedented 20,000 music fans arriving to listen to their music heroes. Fortyyears ago they made history. Born out of necessity, the festival was part of a rescue

attempt for a town considered by businesspeople of the area to be on its knees. They needed an injection of visitors to stay – not just to stop for an ice-cream or their way west. Looking at their infrastructure they could see that they would not be able to support major events requiring thousands of beds with en-suite bathrooms. But they had spaces for tents and places for sleeping bags to be unfurled. With enthusiasm and youthful energy they created Ireland’s first music festival of its size, attracting Marianne Faithfull, and fueled by her success, an outdoor festival of even greater magnitude to accommodate the loyal local and international fans of Rory Gallagher, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Paul Young, Paul Brady, and other Irish and foreign acts at the top of their game. In a town of 3,000 people 20,000 people showed up. Donal said Rory loved the festival and the local audience and that they were always very well treated in Macroom. He added that the sound for the event was of the highest international standard. Dublin-based public relations boss Don Hall, whose father, TV personality Frank Hall, opened the first festival back in 1976, said his dad had come down to open the event and liked the Macroom people so much, he stayed for the full 10 days and officially closed the festival as well. CORK’S rock superstar Rory Gallagher played his two best concerts at the Macroom Mountain Dew Festival in 1977 and 1978. That was the verdict of Rory’s brother and manager Dónal, who last night helped launch a new book about the legendary festival by Roz Crowley, at a packed gathering in Fitz-Gerald’s bookshop in the town.

Gypsy Pistoleros always had a reputation for danger and made history by being the only band to be invited to play at all five Rocklahoma festivals, in Oklahoma, USA; on May 28th 2011, they appeared alongside Poison, Whitesnake, Black Label Society, Papa Roach, etc where they closed Saturday night after Staind. They toured extensively, playing with the likes of L.A. Spiritual Connections Written By Debra Brocato | 15 March 2017 12:00 AM CET Playing for people like the Shaw of Iran, celebrities in the movie industry, the U.S. President at the time, Ernest Hemingway and more, music was a main artery in my life due to my Father, Joseph S. Brocato, who was very well known violinist in the Jazz business for introducing concert violin to Jazz. He was unheard of in the 40’s but not for long as he was mentored by and began playing with the likes of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Lionel Hampton. At four years old Joseph picked up his sister Anne’s violin and started to play the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, flawlessly and without any lessons. His genius on the violin was not limited to classical music, he was an extraordinary musician—a pioneer and master of the Jazz violin. Joe didn’t just play the violin – he was the violin! Any one who had the pleasure of knowing Joe knew of his passion for his art and the love of his family. While my Father and Mother Joseph S. Brocato & Mary Ellen Brocato were touring in Sun Valley Idaho, starring in places like the Duchin Room in the Sun Valley Lodge my sister, Christina and I were born - on the road. My father taught me violin and at 8 years old I began ballet studying under the instructors from Russia, Mr. and Mrs. Romanoff. Off on my toes I went! Having grown up in an extremely musical family, I was drawn to Thin Lizzy because when I first heard Gary Moore play I heard something that really connected me with my emotions. In my opinion he was never recognized as he should have been and this bothered me to the point of no return. A passion that was bigger than me began to the point that I was determined I was going to make a difference and spread his genius to the world. Back

into the music business I went to produce whatever I could about Gary Moore so, I started my own fan club, Strictly Gary Moore Fan Group on Facebook in 2014. It has been a total success and a blast! I have met the most fantastic people through music and the Group. During the two years of this Fan Club, I always knew I would go to his grave site. This passion brought me physically to Brighton, England. I left America in mid July of 2016, alone, never been to England before and landed in London. While staying at the Strand Palace Hotel my first site to see was Jimmy Page’s residence, The Tower House. Cab driver one, well, naww, too old, 2nd cab driver was younger so I said, “Hey, do you know where Jimmy Page lives?” The driver said, in his ever so proper English accent, “Of course I do, get in!”

By the way, this cab driver has been with me to this very day. Craig has become my dearest close friend. For two months we went on a Magical Musical Trip throughout London and parts of England. But the most important trip was to find Gary Moore’s grave. We found it all right and I was in a state of shock, when I finally did find him. I couldn’t talk or breathe; my eyes filled up with tears, and wouldn’t stop as they are now. And in that daze I stayed there until 9:00 pm. I have decorated and cleaned his grave site every week since. I stayed with Stephen and Julie Harrison in Stokes On Trent, in England, whom I met in my Fan Club. They also are Gary Moore Fans. Julie is fantastic in making arrangements and reservations for travel. So of course Julie helped me and made reservations for me the next time I went to Rottingdean, a small village graveyard North of Brighton, along the Atlantic coast, where Gary was laid to rest at St. Margaret Cemetary. Julie Harrison made arrangements for me to stay at St. Martha’s Convent, for 1 week. That’s right, a convent! Little did we know at the time that it was located right across the street where Gary’s cemetery was! And to make it all Moore amazing and spiritual if you will, Sister Surperior knew all about that sad day when Gary was buried. She told me about the funeral in detail and people who paid their respects. Totally amazing, I loved staying there, it was a blessing and not a mistake by any means but one of those ‘meant to be’ situations just like the whole trip was for me. Doors just started to open. The village started to know who I was; this American who brought flowers and raked leaves on Gary’s grave. People started to come up to me and ask me who I was and why I came to Brighton. I simply said, “Gary Moore!” I’ve had cab drivers ask me what brought me to Brighton, again I said, “Gary Moore.” Just a few days ago, just the mention of Gary’s name, caused the cab driver to start tearing up and by the time we got to my destination we both had tears! He was Gary’s cab driver 4 or 5 times in Brighton! See that’s what I mean, what are the chances of that? Everyday here in Brighton is a trip and Gary is right here with me! The draw is so strong, I am convinced it’s a spiritual connection of some kind. At the

end of summer I went back to the U.S. to make final moving arrange ments to go back to Brighton and that I did. On December 22, 2016, first thing I did was see Gary and had Christmas on his grave! After the holidays my main focus was to find someone who was involved in concerts and tributes held in Brighton for Gary Moore. And another door opened. Her name is Helen Neeley, a former actress and comedian and the committee chair for: The Gathering For Gary Moore in Brighton on 1 Apri 2017. Patricia Moore, Gary’s sister and a friend, will also be performing at the The Gathering For Gary Moore. I came to Brighton for Gary Moore to find who was running concerts, with hopes of geting on board, sell t-shirts and tour. Now I am a firm believer if you make up your mind and heart on your passion it appears right before your very eyes and all things feel natural while you realize that what is meant to be happens without struggle. Robert William Gary Moore Born, 4 April 1952– 6 February 2011, Gary was a Northern Irish musician, most widely recognized as a singer, songwriter, and virtuoso rock and blues guitarist. In a career dating back to the 1960s, Moore played with musicians including Phil Lynott and Brian Downey during his teenage years, leading him to memberships of the Irish bands Skid Row and Thin Lizzy, and British band Colosseum II. Moore shared the stage with such blues and rock musicians as B.B. King, Albert King, John Mayall, Jack Bruce, Albert Collins, George Harrison, and Greg Lake, as well as having a successful solo career. He guested on a number of albums recorded by high-profile musicians. http://www.gary-moore.com

Vintage Guitar Readers Induct Gary Moore to Hall of Fame Vintage Guitar Magazine, which is celebrating 30 years of publication, has announced inductees to its Hall of Fame, including the late Gary Moore in the Player category. Inductees, as well as winners of this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards, are featured in the magazine’s April issue, available now. A definitively “unsung hero,” Moore’s career was reflected in virtuosity, diversity, and an uncom- promising body of work. Moore was versed in the areas of bluesrock, power pop, heavy metal, and even jazz-rock fusion, and further separated himself via improvisations with exotic note choices, fluid passage work, textures, and melodic patterns. Influenced by everyone from Frank Zappa to Ollie Halsall to Albert King, he was a flashy lead player as well as a powerful, supportive rhythm player who kept modern blues in the forefront like nobody since Stevie Ray Vaughan. Other Readers’ Choice winners include Joe Satriani as Artist of the Year, B.B. King as Blues Player of the Year, Warren Haynes for Rock Player, Brad Paisley for Country Player, and Al Di Meola as Jazz Player, Jeff Beck, Live+ was honored as Album of the Year, while David Gilmour was also inducted to the magazine’s Hall of Fame in the Player category, alongside National founder George Beauchamp as Innovator and the Fender Champ amplifier as Instrument. Winners in all categories are determined by a vote of the magazine’s readership. How The Blues Saved Gary Moore Gary Moore was one of the greatest hard rock guitar heroes of the 1980s – and he hated it. Then he rediscovered the blues and found his true calling. It was over 15 years later but the look of disgust on Gary Moore’s face was still there. I was interviewing him around the release of the string of overlooked blues albums he put out during the mid-00s, long after his career had peaked. As we talked, his memory flashed back to the moment in 1989 when he decided, as he put it, “that enough was enough” and it was time to make the album he had always wanted to make. Despite a fondness for pills and dope when he was younger, Moore had nev-

er been a serious drugs man. The fact that both Lynott and Moore’s fellow guitarist Scott Gorham were heavily into heroin made life extra hard. Or as Downey puts it

now: “With Gary, every night had to be spot on. And there were some nights, Christ, man, I don’t know how Phil got up and played, he was so out of it.” Lynott had a studio in his garage where they made the demos for Out In The Fields. Moore tried working with him there on other things but found the process frustrating. “You couldn’t get him out of bed before two in the afternoon,” he told me. “Then he’d come down with a glass of whiskey and a spliff, one in each hand. We did a few TV shows together, but he wasn’t in good shape. He would drink quite a lot while he was with you. He was just not on top of it at all and it was really sad.” Moore tried his best to pull his old friend out of his downward descent, but Lynott was beyond help. http://teamrock.com/feature/2014-09-10/jumping-at-shadows-how-the-bluessaved-gary-

Once renowned as the most talented guitarist to come Moore was one to thrill to. He cut a frenetic figure onst Phil Lynott’s romantic gypsy blade.

PHIL LYNOTT Philip Parris “Phil” Lynott (20 August 1949 – 4 January 1986) was an Irish musician, singer and songwriter. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founding member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist. He later also found success as a solo artist. Growing up in Dublin in the 1960s, Lynott fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, most notably Skid Row alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming Thin Lizzy in 1969. After initial success with “Whiskey in the Jar”, the band found strong commercial success in the mid-1970s with hits such as “The Boys Are Back in Town”, “Jailbreak” and “Waiting for an Alibi”, and became a popular live attraction due to the combination of Lynott’s vocal and songwriting skills and the use of dual lead guitars. Towards the end of the 1970s, Lynott also embarked upon a solo career, published two books of poetry, and after Thin Lizzy disbanded, he assembled and fronted the band Grand Slam, of which he was the leader until it folded in 1985. He subsequently had major UK success with Gary Moore with the song “Out in the Fields”, followed by the minor hit “Nineteen”, before his death on 4 January 1986. He remains a popular figure in the rock world, and in 2005, a statue to his memory was erected in Dublin. SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

BONHAM’S AUCTION HOUSE THE GARY MOORE COLLECTION Gary Moore: A Fender Stratocaster guitar, 1963, neckplate stamped L21725, body with non-original, clear-lacquered natural finish, three Kinman AVN pickups, three-ply laminated scratchplate, three volume/tone knobs and five-way selector, re-fretted rosewood fingerboard with dot markers, in rectangular, plush-lined Fender tweed case with various components, guitar 38 1/2in (98cm) long FOOTNOTES This was a gift to Gary from the late Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival, during a performance there in 1998. The guitar required extensive work to return it to a playable condition, including complete re-fret, new tremolo block, replacement tuners, re-wiring and a set of Kinman noiseless pickups. With the guitar is an alternative, complete additional hardware/electronics setup mounted on a separate scratchplate, with Stratocaster single coil pickups by Seymour Duncan. They were made for Gary with a number of options, one of which is a reverse-wound single coil, providing an additional set of tones when used in certain pickup combinations. Seen on the live footage of the TV broadcast from the Fledah in Finsbury Park, London in 2001 and the ‘Blues For Jimi’ DVD, filmed in London in late 2007. Featured in the ‘Guitarist’ magazine, Issue 403, February 2016, Gary Moore Commemorative Edition and demonstrated on Youtube.

Marks — July 2016 In the mid 1980’s Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder and president of Atlantic Records was considering signing popular Hollywood, California glam rock band HAWK to Atlantic Records. Just at that time turmoil within the band began and ultimately everything disintegrated due to money issues and personal differences. Being signed to Atlantic Records may have been a good thing, but maybe not; 25 years later, a HAWK album is at least still being sold by one of the original HAWK artists, Doug Marks, for $7.50–$18.00 each. If Atlantic Records had signed the band, possibly a lot of money/fame/ artistic validation would have happened with HAWK but also possibly no money would have been made for the artists. In some cases however, selling your own albums can give you con-

HAWK album included David Fefolt (vocals), Matt Sorum (drums, Guns ‘N Roses, Velvet Revolver, Hollywood Vampires, Motorhead), Dave Tolly & Steve Ayola (keyboards), Mark Edwards (drum tech), Mixed by Duarne Baron, Alex Woltman & Kevin LaHue at Pasha Music House, Hollywood. of how emotional and creative you are you have to make money. If you work hard for someone else, you can do the same for you. And, years from now you will appreciate yourself for having done so.

"

The Hawk album was recorded in 1986 as a Doug Marks solo project after the original band dissolved earlier that year.

ETHOD GUITARIST RKS 1984

ED GUITAR GO DESIGN BY

HAWK guitarist, Doug Marks has the original Metal Method Guitar Lessons series he and Londa R. Marks developed in 1982 available now. This commemorative digital edition includes guitar lessons that were originally on 8 audio cassettes with original booklets with partly typewriter text, the “Metal Message” newsletters, ads, including hand written or hand pressed lettering and art that Londa R. Marks created. Full page ads Londa R. Marks created for Metal Method Guitar Lessons were published in Hit Parader, Circus Magazine and Guitar World every month. We started with a 1/3 page monthly ad. These are a few images from a recent promo video released by Metal Method Productions: “Metal Method 1983 Flashback.” The t-shirt design on a Metal Message booklet page shown on the next page, along with other graphics and ads I designed, was a free booklet that included some letters students would write to us and our answers. Part of one can be seen where a student wrote to me about the t-shirt design Doug wore in HAWK. Metal Message was sent out several times a year with a lot of motivational info, free lessons, how to form a band, even big hair instructions, :) and more... These lessons are for sale but I don’t sell them or anything related to Metal Method or HAWK anymore even though I operate the Official HAWK Facebook page. This post along with HAWK posts are for my personal archive purposes but there are purchase links to buy from Doug Marks at Metal Method’s YouTube video page here:

It Seems Bands Don’t Make Money Off Touring Either

Detailed Breakdown Of How Much A Metal Band Earns & Spends Playing To 500 People A Night POSTED BY ROBERT PASBANI ON JANUARY 4, 2016 AT 4:35 PM

SHARE ON FACEBOOK, SHARE ON TWITTER, E-MAIL http://www.metalinjection.net/its-just-business/detailed-breakdown-of-how-much-aband-earns-spends-playing-to-500-people-a-night [Excerpt] A few weeks ago, we were shocked when vocalist CJ McMahon announced he was leaving Thy Art Is Murder when he revealed the band was pulling in “$16k-$18k each over 6-7 years.” For one manager, the numbers didn’t quite add up. Derek Brewer is a name you might not exactly be familiar with, but he has managed bands like Dying Fetus and Veil of Maya for Outerloop Managment for the better part of a decade now. He posted an incredible editorial over at MetalSucks that is absolutely worth going out of your way to read. Perhaps The most fascinating part of the article is this detailed breakdown of all potential tour income and expenses. This breakdown assumes you are a mid-level band playing for 500 people a night with a few crew members, renting a van and a trailer. Again, this is not for a band just starting out. These are numbers for a band at the level that Thy Art Is Murder got to. Looking to “make it” in the music business? These are the type of financials you can look forward to on a 30-day tour… Tour Income $2,000.00 per night show guarantee (30 dates)= $60,000.00 $750.00 per night in gross merch sales (30 dates)= $22,500.00 TOTAL INCOME GROSS = $82,500.00 Tour Expenses Merch/Commissions: Estimated merch expense (cost of goods, venue fees, shipping )= -$9,000.00 Management commissions of guarantee (15% gross) = -$9,000.00 Agent commissions of guarantee (10% gross) = -$6,000.00 Management commissions of NET sales of merch= -$2,025.00 Total commissions: $26,025.00 Crew Expenses: (weekly salary per week for 4 weeks) TM/FOH $1,000.00 per week = -$4000.00 Merch seller $650.00 per week= -$2600.00 Driver $600.00 per week = -$2400.00 Stage tech $450.00 per week= -$1800.00 Total crew cost: $10,800.00

Vehicle and Travel expenses: Estimated cost for 32 days van rent w/ trailer= -$5200.00 Estimated cost of fuel for full US tour at 12,660 miles ($2.50 gallon/10MPG) = -$3150.00 Estimated cost of tolls/parking= -$500.00 Hotels (25 nights x $100.00 per night [double bed, cots, band brings air mattress]) = -$2500.00 Total vehicle/travel cost= $11,350.00 Production Expenses: Small light rig/fog machine/strobe rental = -$2,000.00 Misc. costs (gear, taxis, uber, incidentals) = -$1,500.00 Total Production costs = $3,500.00 Band/Crew Per Diems: $10.00 per day for 5 members/4 crew/ $90.00 per day total for 32 days = -$2,880.00 Total per diem cos = $2,880.00 TOTAL ESTIMATED COST OF EXPENSES: $52,060.00 GROSS INCOME = $82,500.00 Subtract EXPENSES = $54,555.00 Remaining Profit = $27,945.00 Amount that each of the five band members receives: $5,589.00 for the month-long tour.

UBUNTU NORTHERN IRELAND A World Without Money ubuntuplanet.org Life has gotten so out of control because of money. It’s really sad that people cannot be friends without money coming into the picture. Really sad. No one trusts anyone because of it, you can’t have a real love relationship because of how it permeates it and causes paranoia, many times you can’t be friends with anyone because soon thereafter money comes up, everyone is suspicious of each other. Sad, very sad. So, Michael Tellenger has come up with possible solutions. This idea came to Michael Tellenger through his research into the origins of humankind and ancient human history – when he realized that the origins of money on our planet did not evolve out of thousands of years of barter and trade as we have been told, but that there was a very specific time, which is well described in the Sumerian clay tablets, when money was introduced as an absolute tool of enslavement over humanity, by the ancient royal political elite, whose bloodline descendants continue to use money as a tool of enslavement over the people today. The goal is to actively spread the message of Unity Consciousness, to all of humanity, that will allow us to heal our division and change the misery into abundance, within a global community filled with LOVE for each other and not FEAR of each other.

https://www.facebook.com/UbuntuNorthernIreland/

UBUNTU is Michael Tellenger’s Abolish Money Program UBUNTU is a group of like-minded people from all walks of life that are actively working towards establishing UBUNTU contributionism for Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Most of our ancient cultures had a saying that “if it’s not good for everyone, it’s no good at all.” In Africa, they called it UBUNTU. But this philosophy was shared by hundreds if not thousands of ancient cultures all over the world.

Money did not evolve from barter and trade and is not necessary for a well-functioning society. On the contrary, money is at the root of most of the problems we face. Remove Hierarchy Hierarchy is not what holds society together and keeps us straight. On the contrary, hierarchy is making people unequal and unhappy. It works against us most of the time. There is a better way! Reinstate Natural Law Natural law is the only true law that we as free people born to this beautiful planet have to abide to. It means maintaining wholeness among all living systems in harmony with the laws of nature. http://www.ubuntuireland.com/news/
