Taxonomy of Manhole Covers

Rob Turner

Introduction This is a large collection of black and white patterns based from the images of manhole covers that I’ve collected. The reason why I collected these images of manhole covers is because of the variety of shapes they make. Many use repeated geometric shapes, and others uses linear patterns. I like the idea of extracting these shapes and interpret in a more visually pleasing way. To do this, I experimented with scale and inversion, which creates a visual alternative. I also looked at overalpping the same shape, which sometimes creates a glitchy digital look to it. I decided to use black and white because I believe using the two creates a more striking look, and I like to use the negative space as part of the overall piece of work. Although this seems to be an unusual object to collect, I find that you can find design inspiration anywhere, and I hope with this collection it will show others that you can make interesting visuals with most objects found in the environment.
