CONTEXT • May 2016: DBIS white paper - A Masterplan for Teaching Excellence. “Success as a Knowledge Economy: Teaching Excellence, Social Mobility, & Student Choice”. OBJECTIVES • Increase diversity, openness &innovation • Match the excellence of teaching with the excellence of research • Enhance our capacity to undertake & fund innovation through cutting-edge research. ACTIONS • A Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) to incentivise delivery of value for students & taxpayers • Creation of UK Research & Innovation to better fund multi & inter-diciplinary research • TEF for the first time links “funding of teaching in HE to quality & not simply quantity” . DESIGN RESEARCH BRIEF 1. Make academics more accessible for students, without jeopordising research? 2. Create higher quality student-academic interaction? 3. Increase serendipitous, cross-disciplinary encounters? 4. Accommodate increasingly diverse students & study formats? 5. Provide infrastructure to increase efficiency & effectiveness of learning?

The relocation of the Psychology Department meant that an opportunity was created to reevaluate how the department was working and to improve the student experience. The academics were keen to use their allocated space efficiently so that a portion of it could be usable to both academics and students. For the department, as well as a place where students can go to find help+assistance from their tutors. The materiality of the space was designed to suggest the qualities of a laboratory, to reflect light and to take advantage of the views out across London.
