EDITORIAL
3
By Tom O’Hare
I write my Editorial, every month, mostly about the positive things in and around Rocky Point such as the great sandy beaches that surround our town, the many fine restaurants here in Puerto Peñasco, the taco and hot dog stands, snorkeling, fishing, riding jet skis, horseback riding, exploring the desert off road, visiting CEDO, the Pinacate Biosphere, Gillespi’s Mine, etc. There are definitely many varied things to do during your stay here in Rocky Point. I have always said that my favorite thing about living in Rocky Point is the friendliness of the people and its overall laid back atmosphere. Last month Sandy and I had a visit from our son, Robert, his wife, Marja and our grandkids, Mak and Eila. They flew into Phoenix from Wisconsin, rented a car, and joined us down here for their vacation. They have been coming to Rocky Point since 1991 and this time decided to stay in a beautiful roomy condo at the Sonoran Sky Resort. It was a busy 10 days for them as they snorkeled and kayaked off Sandy Beach, chartered a boat for a day trip to Bird Island to go snorkeling with the sea lions, spent many an afternoon eating at almost all of the taco and hot dogs stands, eating at the various restaurants on Sandy Beach and in the Old Port, enjoying a round of golf at Laguna Shores, exploring the beach and tidepools, shopping, and lots of rest and relaxation sunning poolside at the resort. Overall, it was a great vacation for all of us. But, they did have a few questions about Rocky Point that I didn’t have answers for. One was why is it that they can buy some things cheaper in the U.S. than they can here in Rocky Point? Namely, Tecate, Pacifico and Corona beer. The same goes for some of the restaurant prices. (I didn’t have an answer then and I still don’t.) Another question was about the night time street lighting along the way to and in front of the Sandy Beach Resorts – it is very dark and some entrances are almost impossible to see as are stop signs, pedestrians and animals. I didn’t really know what they were talking about because Sandy and I normally do not drive at night, but we got a rude awakening when we went to meet
the kids at the condo for a 9pm dinner. We left the Ranchito and turned west on Samuel Ocaña, heading to the Sandy Beach resorts. Well, we almost ran two stop signs because they are in the median, hidden behind trees and barely visible at night. (Not to mention the very narrow road littered with pedestrians and animals.) After we crossed the railroad tracks the road becomes very curvy. There are no street lights and it is very dangerous when the headlights of oncoming traffic shine in your eyes – most people (I’ve been told) don’t shut their brights off – most likely because they can’t see either! Besides the curviness and oncoming traffic, it is narrow and not striped. (I told Sandy I’ll never drive this again at night). I know, at one time, there was a scenic master plan for that area which is why the road is so curvy, but it just seems like a hazard now. Every month I drive all over town, and to all the resorts, to deliver the Rocky Point Times Newspaper, but when we left the kids condo that night for dinner I completely missed the turn for our restaurant. There are no lighted signs, and if I hadn’t already known where Chef Mickey’s Place was at Las Palmas, we probably would have given up looking. I feel sorry for first-time visitors trying to find their condo resort rental at night. There is definitely room for improvement on the road to the resorts. And I’m sure a lot of you are already aware of this – I just haven’t driven at night for so long. So many great improvements have been made to the town, but we definitely need some street lighting along Sandy Beach and Samuel Ocaña needs some help. I have found out since our experience that a lot of folks take Calle 13 to the resorts instead of Samuel Ocaña, which seems to be a safer choice at night. It appears that we have received a break in the weather earlier than expected. Sandy insists that the weather does not “change” until the second week of October, which seems to be true for the last few years. However, this year, I think that Mother Nature has taken pity on us – as she should since it got really hot and humid really early this year. Right now we are enjoying crisp cool mornings, late
evening weather in the low 70s, and daytime temps hang right around 90°, but with very low humidity. What a relief it is! So, if you are planning on coming to Rocky Point this month, you might want to bring a light jacket for those early morning beach walks or the night time events around town. Speaking of events, October is packed full of an eclectic mix of events from our first ever Sprint Car Races to the Jazz and Art Festival to JJ’s Cantina’s One Club Open. There will be softball and volleyball tournaments as well as beach bashes and dinner fundraisers. Along with the Spring Car Races on Sandy Beach, another first for Rocky Point will be the Peñasco Palooza 2011 Concert which will feature Steve McCarty, formerly of the Steve Miller Band, as well as 6 others (The Hitmen AllStars) – all from great rock-and-roll bands like The Moody Blues, Aerosmith and Tower of Power – performing their great hits. And, of course, Mark Mulligan and his gang will be returning for the annual Parrot Mafia Concert and we will head out at the end of the month for our bi-annual El Golfo Run. There will also be local cultural events such as the Cervantino Festival and Fiestas de Agua y Sol. So, grab a pencil and paper, check out the Calendar of Events on Page 4 of this edition, and map out your days because you won’t want to miss a thing! November is shaping up to be just as busy as this month with the 11th Annual Rocky Point Bike Rally, the Taste of Peñasco and Iron Chef Competition as well as the Rocky Point Fly-In which will see pilots from Mexico and the U.S. enjoying three days of fun activities. For last minute events, or reminders about current events, be sure to visit our Facebook page (Sandy made me write that!).
So, come on down, have some fun in the sun, and enjoy our fantastic weather.

Ask Cap’n Greg Visitors in a foreign country can expect to encounter unfamiliar food and behavior. It’s what makes travel so interesting. Here are some examples of questions sent in by inquiring Rocky Point Times readers. Q: Why do some men roll their shirts up to their chins and expose their man boobs in the summer? A: I have a couple answers for this one. The first answer is, when it’s hot, stripping to bare skin will allow for the cool breezes of summer to give welcome relief. The second answer is that some men expose their chests because, as children, they played a game called, “I’ll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours.” They figure if it worked with little Maria next door when they were four years old, it will work on UA coeds strolling by the fish market when the men are 40. I say, good luck with that. Q: Do they sell alarm clocks in Rocky Point? A: No. Alarm clocks don’t work near the ocean. Q: Do women go topless on the beach? A: Although it brings incredibly big smiles to some faces, public nudity is frowned upon here. However, when female toplessness does occur, it’s mostly by accident during volleyball games, and mostly on purpose during motorcycle rallies. Q: Where can I find the best shrimp cocktail? A: I asked part-time resident and selfproclaimed shrimp cocktail connoisseur, Beckie Fennemore, to dish on
the subject. A meticulous student of Mexican gastronomy, Beckie says the typical recipe has varying amounts of shrimp, Clamato, celery, onion, fresh tomato, lime juice, cilantro, salt and pepper, and Tabasco or a similar hot sauce. All that stuff goes in a plastic cup sold by street vendors, or in tall soda fountain glasses at restaurants, and is often served with foil-wrapped saltine crackers. While Beckie says she makes a killer shrimp cocktail herself, her pick for the best in Rocky Point is Mary’s on the Malecón. Q: What’s the weather like in Rocky Point? A: Lots of sun. Not much rain. Think Tucson, except with an ocean. Q: Do they sell American brands of candy there, like M&M’s and Snickers? A: Sure. But once in a while I prefer Mexican dulces (pronounced DOOLsays; it means sweets). In addition to sugary treats, there are also salty, sour and hot flavors. Whether it’s commercially produced and packaged candies and chips, or homemade varieties, they are all yummy in the tummy. Q: I know there’s a Burger King in Rocky Point, but are there any plans for a McDonald’s? A: Are you the same dummy who asked about the alarm clocks?

Puerta Privada...A Must See Property!!!
t all began in 1994 with the first hi-rise development in town, Plaza Las Glorias Hotel & Condos (now Peñasco del Sol & Condominiums Pinacate). After that, it was Princesa de Peñasco in 1998, Sonoran Spa in 2000, and Sonoran Sea in 2002. Miguel Guevara was the Project Director and Mary Snyder the Sales Director, for these 4 resorts. They were all completed, sold out, turned over to the homeowners, and are currently managed and rented as some of Peñasco’s favorites.
With 7 additional rental properties popping up on Sandy Beach, the Guevara/Snyder development team decided the town was ready for a unique project that did not allow rentals. So in 2004, Guevara joint ventured with Carlos Saenz, who owned and operated Palmar RV Park for many years. In 2005, the RV park came down, with constuction and sales beginning for Puerta Privada. The project was sold out, completed and delivered by 2007. Combining past experience, reputation, and proven track record, Puerta Privada continues to be the leader in setting the standard for quality construction, design, and finishes. The project consists of two towers that run directly parallel to the water, providing 180 degree views of the ocean to the south, and golf course views to the north, from every single condo. They are quite spacious with the 2 bedroom units just under 2000 sq ft and the 3 bedroom units at 2750 sq ft. Marble floors, beveled cut glass, granite countertops, reverse osmosis water/ice, stainless appliances and dual pane windows are just some of the features that come standard in all of the units.
The common areas include 2 negative edge pools, one heated and the other Olympic lap length, 2 hot tubs, underground parking, pet park, basketball, and lighted tennis court. The 3 story amenity b u i l d i n g , fabulously detailed with carved cantera stone, features a state of the art fitness center (with resident personal trainer), a game room loaded with air hockey, pool table, shuffleboard, foos ball, darts, and touch screen video game computers. The top floor clubhouse is beautifully furnished with full kitchen and bar areas, plasma TV’s, BBQ’s poker tables and fireplace. This is where the true heart of Puerta Privada begins. It’s not just a project but a home away from home, with a family feel. Most of the owners have condos in other developments, or businesses in town. Why do they prefer Privada? Due to the non rental policy, (long term leases ARE allowed), there is such a community atmosphere, since everyone knows their neighbor, and they are all there for the same reason. Every month there are events, golf or tennis tournaments, art shows, holiday parties with bands, etc. Or the last minute, everyone- bring-somethingto-share, get togethers at the pool or clubhouse. Many of the owners have said that they have made some of the best friendships here, which will last a lifetime. Almost all of the current HOA board members, including the p r e s i d e n t and resort administrator, have served on other boards in Peñasco. This experience, coupled with the lack of rental, which causes wear and tear, allows Puerta Privada to maintain some the lowest HOA monthly fees on the beach. This unique project has it all…quality, reputation, privacy and, in today’s market, the opportunity to take advantage of some terrific, resale opportunities. Visit the “Privada Lifestyle” and experience it for yourself. You’ll be glad you did!! For pressure free information, the furnished model on Sandy Beach is open 7 days a week, 9AM-5PM or checkout the website at www.PuertaPrivada.com.

Mexico’s Premier Swim-Up Bar/Restaurant ...It’s Right Here in Rocky Point! You’re “IN” If You’re Hangin at’
SWIM! By Zack & Via›s Dad
I recently had the opportunity to chat with the owners of the awesome swim up bar and restaurant located right here on Sandy Beach at the beautiful Bella Sirena Resort. Cathy and Scott Poturalski, the gracious owners of SWIM Lounge (or SWIM) since the spring of 2008, have really turned this hip hang-out into one of Rocky Point’s coolest spots to be during the day and early evening hours. The ambience is a signature “Cabana Island” lifestyle that is family friendly. If you don›t own at Bella Sirena, or are not renting there, you are always welcome to come by and the guards will give you a pass to come to the SWIM Lounge anytime! Whether you’re splashing up to the swim-up bar, or cruising up to the land bar for some amazing food and tantalizing beverages, the SWIM Lounge is a fantastic place to relax, unwind and salute to our good fortune…we are all lucky enough to be in Rocky Point! Scott Poturalski grew up in Mesa, Arizona with his parents, Dave and Margie, and four brothers, Darryl, Brian, Michael and Craig. In 1972, when Scott was just 12 (or was it 2 Scott?), his parents were asked to check out the Mexican asset that was bequeathed
to their church in Mesa. Not having been to Puerto Peñasco, and not really knowing what to expect, they packed up their 5 boys and went on an adventure to discover a humble little property on the tip of Estero Morua, which is near the estuary mouth at the west end of Playa Encanto. There was no running water or electricity, but it was a wonderful discovery for the Poturalski’s and their church! The fun-loving Poturalski clan, along with other family members, ended up building a 2-bedroom beach home in Playa Encanto. Their hard work and play hard philosophy created such a very special bond with the boys and families and planted seeds that grew onward past the boys and to their future wives and children. Scott’s wife, Cathy, was introduced to Rocky Point and the beautiful surroundings of the Sea of Cortez by Scott. It did not take much time for Scott and Cathy to decide that it would be the adventure of a lifetime if they could make Rocky Point their permanent home. On October 18th,
1997, Scott and Cathy were married on Playa Encanto Beach and that sealed the deal! Two weeks later Scott came down to Rocky Point and started selling real estate with his Dad. Cathy followed a year later and she slowly picked up design jobs, one by one. By 2001 Cathy and Scott had both been working with Cameron Truesdell and had helped build and design his home in Playa La Jolla. When it was time to sell that home, it was the first house to be recorded at a sales price over $1 million dollars in Puerto Peñasco. All along Cameron had the vision that there were many more people that would enjoy a high-end luxurious home in Peñasco and he had the vision to build the project. After recruiting Scott and Cathy to lead the design, planning, marketing, and sales….we now have Bella Sirena on Sandy Beach. Scott and Cathy traveled back and forth from Gilbert, Arizona to Bella Sirena for the next 4 years to spend time with their girls as they were growing up. Slowly, in the following years they were able to spend more and more time at Bella Sirena. And, in 2005, they found themselves at Bella Sirena the majority of the time - only visiting the Phoenix area for family moments, special events and shopping trips. As the economy slowly started to decline in the U.S. and Rocky Point, Cathy closed her design showroom and looked forward to spending more time on philanthropic opportunities. The restaurateurs that were building their dream of a huge restaurant had been running the day grille & swim up bar at Bella Sirena, which
was called “Bungalow”. The restaurant closed in October of 2007 and the owners were not able to return to reopen it for Spring Break of 2008. Scott knew that the owners at Bella Sirena needed the amenities of the bar/restaurant to help retain their property value. As they say, “The Show Must Go On”... so they started contacting the old crew that worked at the Bungalow. The crew trained and worked very fast during the last week of February to get things up and running. It was challenging for the Poturalski’s but the outcome was remarkable! Scott and Cathy began SWIM Lounge with each of them taking on their areas of expertise. Scott worked hard with the manager and bartender, Luis and Eddie, and was determined to have the absolute best margarita in the whole town – and at the best value to keep patrons coming back. Their sweet and sour is made from fresh squeezed lemons, limes and oranges daily! The premium margarita is called the “DOG PADDLE” and once you’ve had one of these, you’ll be swimming more like a confused sea lion than Michael Phelps! ...Continued on page 18

Paw Prints “Animal Adoption Center of Rocky Point Inc.”
by Nancy Phelan AKA “The Pack Leader” Our next spay clinic, put on by the city of Puerto Peñasco will be held on Friday, November 11th and Saturday, November 12th at the Shrimp Park on the corner of Blvd. Fremont and Benito Juarez. Again we hope to perform surgery on 200 plus animals. Visiting Veterinarians from different parts of Mexico, and hopefully the USA, will be donating their services to help the animals of Rocky Point. If you are a veterinarian and would like to participate please give me a call or e-mail me (see address block). Dr. Socorro Ruiz, head of the health department, has been conducting several clinics a year now for several years and it is making a huge difference. The health department is located across from the Immigration office on Benito Juarez. If you would like to volunteer your time, food or condo for the clinic, please call Mario at the City at (011-52-638) 388-5152 or me, Nancy at (011-52-638) 383-1012. Even if you can bake for 4 to 10 people it will help. There are usually 20 volunteers at these events. Three meals for two days are needed. Some of you may want to pick up the neighbor dogs and bring them to the clinic for a free spay or neuter and help with the population problem! The spay clinics are a great help, but the problem remains of where to keep the dogs and how to get them adopted out. So many stray dogs, mothers with puppies, and litters of puppies are abandoned on the streets. They need our help! I am full and we are in desperate need of a shelter for these animals to go to. The city has an adoption day once a year in April, but we need more. The dogs are kept at the city pound for 3 days and then put down. There is no shelter for the many dogs that are healthy and need good homes. I have many puppies, kittens, cats and dogs that need good homes. Please consider adopting one of these precious babies. If anyone has any ideas of what we can do to solve this problem please call me at 383-1012. Maggie Abens is tending to five puppies that were found in Las Conchas. The puppies are feral, but Maggie is doing her best to socialize them. A good friend is allowing her to keep them in an enclosed yard. If you can foster and socialize one or two pup-
pies please give me a call or email me at nancy_phelan@yahoo.com. I took in a puppy yesterday that was about a week old that had been dropped in the trash. I hope he makes it. Three other little pups arrived last week. They are about 7 weeks old, very playful and full of love. The many kittens are growing fast and need surgery before the clinic in November. We have several adorable Chihuahuas, one Poodle, 5 Black Lab mixes, one brindle and several older dogs that would be wonderful security and make a great addition to your family. And, of course, the three new little ones. Kittens are many sizes and colors. Please call for an appointment to see the kittens. The best days to visit are Monday through Thursday when Antonio is here. Appointments are best on weekends, but I am here 24/7. Several years ago Jeannie Carmen, a friend from the Sonoran Sun, saw a dog attack a family of a mother cat and her kittens. Jeannie was able to save one kitten. She brought the kitten to me covered with blood and in pretty bad shape. I call her Diamond (in the rough). She is one of my house cats and is the most beautiful Siamese. Jeannie brings many supplies and last week she brought a 6-foot swimming pool for the dogs to cool off in this summer heat. Thank you to a wonderful friend Jeannie! I also want to thank whoever brought the many toddler pools for the dogs. The items were dropped over the fence and I do not know who donated them! The pools work very well for the dogs here at the center. I also have one for the cats and a few do go in to cool off. I do not have enough room to thank all my wonderful animal friends, but if you do want an acknowledgment and your name mentioned please email me at nancy_ phelan@yahoo.com. Speaking of Siamese, Jean Samsel of Las Conchas adopted a little kitten last month. Turns out the veterinarian in Scottsdale told Jean that the baby is a Lynx Point Siamese. A beautiful little baby with a wonderful new home. A big thank to Lisa Wendt of Cholla Bay for bringing Freckles to her new owner Dennis in Arizona. Lisa did a fundraiser years ago for the animals when she was teaching and raised several thousand dollars for the animals. Now

she is a regular visitor and transporting the little ones is an added bonus for the center. The center is in dire need of puppy and kitten food. We use Kirkland from Costco for the cats, dogs and puppies, but all brands are welcome. We also need cleaning supplies - bleach, disinfectant, mops, brushes, laundry soap and Downey. Thank goodness winter is coming - it has been a long hot summer. Hopefully we will get an early change in the weather! We are a 501(c)3 corporation and your donations are tax deductible. If you would like to make a donation, please make out checks to AACORP and mail to PO Box 1031, Lukeville, AZ 85341. We have been at this location now for 10 years and are located behind the old Villa Granada hotel. If you have a vehicle and need a tax write for the year please give me a call. You can also donate online through our website through PayPal - www. rpaac.org. A very secure and safe way to donate. We need your help to continue this wonderful work. I would like to thank everyone who cares for and helps with the animal situation. We could not continue this work without your help. These cuties, as well as many others, are in need of good homes. Please stop by the center if you are looking for an animal to adopt. They all need loving homes.

Finding Paradise By Sandy Spain
On Vacation As I write this, I am on my summer vacation – yes San Miguel Allende again. This year, accompanied by one girlfriend, I drove to San Miguel. I wrote several articles about last year’s trip, so I won’t bore you with a lot of the same. On the road again We took my friends car this year, as there were only the two of us and hers is a little smaller than mine, but still an SUV so we had plenty of room for everything we wanted to take and buy along the way. I prefer to drive and she prefers to navigate, so it works out really well. She has Sonoran plates so we were able to get the car permit right in Puerto Peñasco at the old airport.
through town and turned off by the airport. On the beach past the airport is a fabulous private development called Estrella del Mar. They have homes, condos, country club, golf course and a fabulous hotel called Las Villas on a really nice beach. We had dinner in their great restaurant (wonderful wine selection) and left the next morning in a pretty heavy rainstorm. Tlaquepaque, Ajijic, Tonala and Chapala Town Next stop was the Guadalajara area. We stayed in a bed and breakfast, Casa de Retoño, in Tlaquepaque.
we had their famous molcajetes. We also ate at some great restaurants in Tlaquepaque, an old favorite Adobe and our new favorite Casa Luna and the always good Casa Fuerte where they make the world’s best guacamole. Casa Luna had some great live entertainment by a duo of a singer and guitar player. Can’t say enough about how great they were.
home tour and out to the famous church at Atotonilco. Again, we have a new favorite restaurant this year in San Miguel, Cantina de Los Milagros.

Lake Chapala Walk and Park in Ajijic
Navajoa Best Western Pool Area
We also recommend Villa del Ensueño where we stayed last year. Even though we were nearby last year, with all the construction on Highway 15 through Guadalajara, we got lost. But eventually found our way. We spent a week and managed to shop, EAT and see a lot of the area. We booked a guide who took us to the two main towns on Lake Chapala, Ajijic and Chapala Town (yes, that is what the Mexican guide says they call it to differentiate from
View from our room-Mazatlan Las Villas
This time we spent the first night in Navajoa. It is a pretty town and right as you enter town there is a Best Western. It’s a little worn, but has good off-street parking and a nice restaurant (you know me, have to find some good food) overlooking the pool. Next stop was Mazatlan and we didn’t really want to drive across town to the Zona Dorada for a hotel as we did last year, so we stayed on the highway
San Miguel Parish Church
San Miguel de Allende We have a 2 bedroom apartment this year at the same facility, Casa de Los Soles. We’ve walked all over San Miguel, we are eating great food. Again, visiting our favorite places from last year and finding some new places. San Miguel also has wonderful live entertainment. We’ve visited with friends, shopped, gone on the Library’s

Viva Mexico Last year we were here for Day of the Dead Celebration and this year we will be here for the Independence celebration and we can’t wait to see what that is like. Go Go Go As I’ve said over and over, go see Mexico. The country has an enormous variety of geography. The music, the people and the food are wonderful and different from region to region. On the road, again, we experienced no problems. We were waived through all the check points without even talking to anyone, with the exception of the one outside of Puerto Peñasco on the way to Caborca, where we had to show the car permit paperwork. We’ve had no problems in any of the towns and have never felt unsafe. So get your paperwork in order and get out and see this country!

Mexico’s Premier Swim-Up Bar/Restaurant ...It’s Right Here in Rocky Point! ...Continued from page 12
For you vodka lovers, there is the “DEEP BLUE”, which is so refreshing on hot day! If you’re a rum lover, then there is not a better Mojito all the way to Havana! SWIM grows their own organic mint on site and will hand muttle until you’re dizzy watching them. Jackie Weinstein Kannapel will tell you she comes to SWIM just for their mojitos and she even had them as her signature drink at her wedding in October of 2010! The 2 for 1 beer and well drinks during happy hour is a sure bet you don’t want to miss out on! Cathy worked on the new menu with Angel, SWIM’s chef, and a few different other line cooks along the way to provide all the menu items with the freshest and highest quality ingredients possible. The outcome is an amazing and delicious menu made fresh every day with pride and dedication. You can see that in all of their menu items. The locals readily compliment and rave about their sliders, which are made with the highest quality fresh ground chuck, grilled onions, and fresh buns. And, if you need a kid’s opinion, Olivia (aka Via Maria) will be the first to give her praise to the sliders and grilled chicken sandwiches. Scott named their quesadilla after his bride, Cathy, as she likes gourmet food and had the cooks add goat cheese and fresh roasted red peppers to her quesadillas and – voila - the Cathydilla was born! It didn’t take long for it to be one of the most ordered items. Another savory treat is the ceviche. This is definitely one of my favorites and no one does it like SWIM Lounge! My son Zack orders the shrimp basket with fries for almost every meal at SWIM. Go ZACK! Recently, the grilled chicken, shrimp and beef fajitas were added to the menu
and have been very popular since their inception. Lastly, another big favorite are the street tacos. Seriously, this is not “street food”. It’s a fusion of Gus› tacos meets Flemings! The steak strips just melt in your mouth. Cathy and Scott are often seen guest bartending or serving food as they like to ensure their guests are having a great experience. Scott is usually known to come up with a fun game for everyone to join in on creating a fun-filled environment! The Poturalski’s love seeing their guests visit SWIM regularly and bring family and friends back time after time. So, if you are looking for some great food and amazing drinks at affordable prices, kick back in their tiki themed digs and enjoy the fun of our local celebrities like Gino (The Mayor), Zack (Jr. Mayor), Barb, Matt, Jessica and Marco, Scott, Shari, and many friends like Chris and Janna, Nelson, Bill and Sharon, Randy and Jeanne, Jonny Vegas, and Derek of Capone’s, Jose from Boo Bar, Maurina, Mike and Karen, Mike and Julie, the Danzers, Kent, The McKenzie Clan, Mary Snyder, E.B. and Liz, Jim and Susan, Chad and Ann, and so many others that their list is too great to mention. Come on down to SWIM LOUNGE! SWIM is open Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10 PM, and on Monday from 11:30 AM to 6 PM. SWIM operates “island style”, so if you are having fun around the bar on Friday or Saturday night, they’ll be happy to keep your fun times rolling past normal hours. Can’t wait to see you at Rocky Point’s coolest beach lounge...SANDY BEACH’S SWIM LOUNGE! Until then…remember… Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That›s why it›s called THE PRESENT. SALUTE AMIGOS! Marco

chainlink fence. You will need to go to the small building, which sits in the middle of the two lanes, and tell the officer what items you have to declare and the value of each item. When you are finished filling out the form, the import tax (impuestos) will be assessed and you will be handed two forms to take to the bank and pay. (The bank is at the side of the brick building, past the fountain.) An agent may want to come and inspect your load. The taxes you pay are in pesos (they will accept dollars) and are to be paid directly to the bank and you will be issued a receipt. You will need that receipt to cross the border. (If you are pulled over by Aduana after leaving the border, you will need the receipt as proof of payment.) After you have paid the bank you will need to cross the border and go through the Fiscal Traffic Light. If you get the red light you will need to pull over and show your receipt to the officer. If you come through the fiscal traffic light, and merchandise is found which was not declared, you could have to pay a fine of 4x the commercial value of the articles plus your vehicle and belongings may be seized. If you choose the Integral Inspection the fine will be 1½x the value. In both cases you forfeit the right to the tax exemption.

COASTAL HIGHWAY 003 Carretera Costera Sections still under construction Total: 500 km (approx. 300 miles) spanning from San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora to Guaymas, Sonora The Coastal Hwy. has been completed from El Golfo de Santa Clara to Puerto Peñasco, and is still under construction from El Desemboque to San Carlos, with many stretches completed. Hwy. 003 will dramatically cut the driving time from Southern California, Yuma, AZ and Guaymas.
As soon as you drive past the chainlink fence, you are entering Mexico. Wait at the crosswalk for the vehicle ahead of you to pass all the way through the lane before proceeding ahead. VEHICLE INSPECTION There are two means of inspection: 1) Fiscal Traffic Light 2) Integral Inspection As you cross the Mexican Border there will be a narrow lane with a (traffic) light on your left at the end of the lane. As you proceed ahead, the light will flash either RED (alto - stop) or GREEN (pase - go). This is the Fiscal Traffic Light and means that you are proceeding into Mexico without anything to declare over your allowed limit by law. RED LIGHT...STOP (ALTO) If the light flashes red as you pass it, you must pull your vehicle over to the left, under the canopy, or wherever as directed by the officer if it is busy. The officer will ask you some questions, such as where you are going, how long you are staying, and what you are bringing into Mexico. The officer will most likely look through your vehicle and may look through your belongings. You do not leave your vehicle unattended during inspection and you accompany the officer during his search. If you incur any problems be sure to get the name, badge number of the officer and the time. GREEN LIGHT...GO (PASE) If you get the green light you can pass through without any inspection. Please note that you still may be pulled over and inspected even though you got the green light. INTEGRAL INSPECTION (Voluntary) This is the voluntary request for the exa mination of your articles, if you have items to declare which exceed your allo wed limits. Before you pass through the light you will pull off to your left and park in the assigned spaces against the

INSURANCE MEDICAL INSURANCE Family or personal trip/vacation medical insurance can be purchased by some providers in the U.S. Check your existing policy to see what coverage is offered while visiting Mexico. Most clinics in Rocky Point do not accept U.S. insurance. VEHICLE INSURANCE Mexican Law states that you MUST HAVE MEXICAN INSURANCE while driving in Mexico. A minimum of liability is required, though full coverage is recommended if you have a vehicle you cannot afford to replace out of pocket. You can insure your driver’s license if driving a buggy, quad, rail, etc., but the vehicle cannot be insured for theft. If your vehicle is stolen, you must immediately file a local, federal (state) and U.S. police report. The insurance companies usually pay low blue book and extras such as rims, tires, stereo, etc. are not covered. Most U.S. policies ARE NOT recognized in Mexico. You may purchase insurance over the internet, phone, mail or stop at a number of places on your way to Rocky Point. Look in this issue for Mexican Insurance.

PETS Only domestic animals (dogs & cats) are permitted into Mexico. You are allowed two (2) animals per vehicle. You need to carry a copy of your pet’s current rabies vaccination certificate as you may be asked for it as you cross the border. Mexico has many stray animals roaming the streets so please keep an eye on your pet. Many pets are lost in Rocky Point each year due to unfamiliar surroundings and firework noise. If your animal is lost while visiting Rocky Point, we have found the best thing to do is scour the area where he/she was last seen. You can also pass out flyers to taxi drivers and water truck delivery men and post them all over town. Putting an announcement on the local AM and FM radio stations are also a good idea. Be sure you have a collar and tag on your animal as well as a current photo. Contrary to popular belief, your pet is not welcome at most establishments, especially where food is served. Please check with the staff before bringing your pet inside as the business can be fined for health violations.

TRAVEL BEYOND THE FREE ZONE Puerto Peñasco is located in the Free Zone, where you do not need vehicle permit to visit. If you plan to travel beyond the Free Zone you will need your FMT (personal tourist visa) and your vehicle permit if you plan on driving. PERSONAL VISA (FMT) An FMT is a personal tourist visa, required by law if you plan to remain in Mexico longer than 72 hours, even within the Free Zone. You can get your FMT at the at the Immigration Office in Sonoyta, on your right, as you cross the border. They are open from 8am-12am. You will need to bring your birth certificate and/ or valid driver’s license. You can either park on the U.S. side and walk across, or you can go through the border and park. You will need to show your ID and fill out the necessary paperwork (it is in English and Spanish). Once you have filled out the paperwork you will take it over to Banca Serfin, pay approx. $195 pesos (per person), and return to the office to give them a copy. At this time you cannot obtain your FMT in Peñasco, but the Immigration Office on Benito Juarez can stamp your FM3, or FM2, for travel beyond the Free Zone. If you are flying into the airport, you can obtain your FMT when you arrive at the Peñasco airport. If you are going to get your vehicle permit, you can get your FMT at the same time, instead of making two stops - see below.
AUTOMOBILE VISA If you plan to drive beyond the State of Sonora, you will need to obtain a permit for your vehicle. The cost for this permit is approx. $290 pesos. They no longer do this in Sonoyta or Peñasco. You must take Hwy. 2, out of Sonoyta, heading toward Caborca, approx. 15 miles down Hwy. 2 there is a checkpoint where you obtain your vehicle permit. This can also be done at the checkpoint outside of Guaymas or at the Guaymas Airport. You will need the original and 3 copies of: • Registration, Title and the valid driver’s license of the vehicle owner • Credit card in the vehicle owner’s name • FMT, FM3, FM2, Passport or birth certificate • Leasing contract (if the vehicle is rented or leased), which must be in the name of the person importing the vehicle. If the vehicle belongs to a company, the papers certifying the employee works for the company. If you do not have a credit card you can post a bond payable to the Federal Treasury issued by an authorized bonding company in Mexico. As an alternative to posting bond you may make a cash deposit at Banco del Ejercito in an amount equal to the value according to the “Table of Vehicle Values for Bonding Companies.” At Banco del Ejercito your credit card will be charged approx. $30 USD. A cash deposit will also be accepted if you do not have a credit card. Your deposit plus any interest will be returned to you when you leave Mexico. You may choose to obtain a bond through an authorized Mexican bonding company located at all border crossings. The bonding company also assess taxes and processing costs for this service. The vehicle permit is good for 6 months and for any type of vehicle weighing under 3 tons. When departing Mexico, and if you are not planning to drive the vehicle back into Mexico, the permit must be canceled with Customs. If your car is found in Mexico, beyond the Free Zone, and beyond the authorized time, or without the appropriate papers, it will be confiscated. Always carry the importation permit with you when driving your vehicle into Mexico. Take it with you when you exit the vehicle - do not leave this document in your car. Make a copy and leave a copy in the car - same with your insurance. The sale, abandonment, or use of the vehicle for financial gain, a criminal act, etc. will result in its confiscation. The vehicle may be driven by the spouse or adult children as long as they have the same immigration status. It is a good idea to get a notarized document, if you are driving a vehicle beyond the free zone that is not registered in your name, nor the owner is in the vehicle. It should simply state that the owner has given you permission to drive the vehicle, you may want to include the make, model, year, color and VIN number.

A short history of the Santa Claus Club. We began in 1983 with a party for 40 children. Over the next 28 years the party grew to a high of 5200 children in 2010, a high of 463 bikes in 2009, a high of 1020 food boxes in 2008 and a high of 8960 pounds of clothes in 2010. The party was held on Christmas Day thru 2006, and then in 2007 we changed to a year round format. We now go into the barrios on a weekly basis and take the donations directly to the people who need them the most. This gives us a better understanding of the needs of the people we are trying to help. The people we are targeting live in make-shift-housing with no electricity, running water or sewage. With the economy in the shape it is, these people need all the help we can provide. To help you keep up with the Santa Claus Club, we have opened a web sitewww.santaclausclub.org with pictures, past yearly totals of donations and quarterly updates of donations for 2011. In 2010, we passed out 480 food boxes, 411 bikes, 8960 pounds of clothes and made 5200 children smile with toys. I would like to thank all of you who donated time to help in the barrios, the shuttle crew that hauled bikes and clothes from
the States and those who donated toys, food and clothes. A special thanks to all the Santa Claus Club members that continue to financially support the club with yearly dues. It takes a combined effort of everyone involved to make this project a reality. Besides the donations which we keep totals on, we passed out hundreds of blankets, hundreds of pairs of shoes and several wheel chairs. In 2011, we are working weekly to provide the same benefits to the needy as last year, thanks to the members that sent in their dues early. This helps keep goods and services flowing on a year round basis. Our first quarter totals are 240 food boxes, 105 bikes, 3790 pounds of clothes and 1000 children with toys. To our past members, go to our web site or call us at (602) 840-1528 and reconnect with the work we are doing. Over the past 28 years we have had members in all 50 states and 8 foreign countries. We have lost contact with some of you and would like to bring you up to date with the new Santa Claus Club. We also have an e-mail address santaclausclub@ hotmail.com that you can contact us if you have any questions or would like to discuss what we are doing.

Aztec Superfood Spirulina By Rosarie Salerno
Theocatlan, the capital city of the preColumbian Aztec Empire, in the vicinity of present day Mexico City, was situated upon man made islands in Lake Texcoco. The lake’s water was made up from an alkaline, saltybrackish composition. It was not a good source of water for growing crops, but was the perfect environment for cultivating spirulina. Spirulina was a major source of proteins, a completefood for the Aztecs and a major part of their diet. Spirulina is a spiral shaped blue-green micro aquatic algae. It is one of the oldest forms of life on earth. Spirulina algae proliferated in the harsh waters and warm climates of our prehistoric planet, billions of years ago. The algae cleansed the air of poisonous carbon dioxide and produced pure oxygen, enabling the higher life forms to develop. The Aztecs would harvest the algae using tightly woven nets, baskets or ropes. It was then dried in the sun and prepared into edible cakes that could be stored for a long time. Today, spirulina is being acknowledged for its healthful attributes. Spirulina is one of the rare vegetarian foods that is made up of complete proteins accompanied by all the essential amino acids, Omegas 3 and 6, essential fatty acids, and a very rich content of carotenes, concentrations that are ten times greater than carrots. The essential amino acids, essential fatty acids and certain carotenes cannot be synthesized in the human body but must be consumed in our diet. Carotenes are an antioxidant that is useful in detoxifying the body and preventing cancer. Fatty acids reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system. Amino acids are critical for life. Spirulna is a rich source of minerals like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium as well as being a nontoxic natural source of iron. It provides vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, Inositol, Biotin, and Pantothenic Acid. Its rich source of Vitamin A can prevent blindness in children. Spirulina may help lower LDL (bad cholesterol); and regulate blood sugar and blood pressure. It’s possible that it may protect the heart from damage caused
by chemotherapy. It also may benefit stroke victims and aid in age related memory loss. It may help people with autoimmune disorders and HIV. And it helps promote the healthy flora of the gastrointestinal tract and curbs hunger with increased energy. The most common use of the super food, spirulina is as a dietary supplement rather than eating large portions. However, in third world countries whose people’s existence is close to starvation, spirulina serves as a main food source that will thrive in environments where other crops cannot grow. The people of Chad, Africa have been eating spirulina for thousands of years. If spirulina became an increased part of the worlds food consumption, instead of relying upon animals like cattle for protein, the carbon footprint would be greatly reduced and be better for our environment. Spirulina may be purchased in a powdery-flake, cake or tablet form. It is supposed to taste like a nutty-seaweed. You’ll either like it or hate eating it; therefore, tablet form would be a better choice. The powdery form can be sprinkled on vegetables or put into vegetable juice shakes, camouflaging its taste. A word of caution: due to pollutants in our world, it is important to purchase spirulina that is grown in controlled environments, free of heavy metals, toxins or radiation. There are companies who produce clean spirulina. Do not grow your own, as each harvest must be tested for pathogens. For people with the metabolic disorder, phenylketonuria, they must avoid spirulina because of the amino acid, phenylalanine, as they cannot metabolize it and could cause a dangerous build-up in the brain. Letters to the Editor
Sandy: Ernie and I are back in town and so pleased to be here!!! Thank you guys for always keeping us up to date on the - Who, What, and Where’s in Rocky Point. S. Padilla Muchas Gracias! We have added the Events back into the RPTimes printed edition and you can always find out what’s going on by visiting our website or check out our Facebook Page or follow us on Twitter for up to the minute events, news and fun stuff. Hi Sandra: I have a question for you…coming in October and now wondering if I should make the Fiestas de Agua y Sol, or is there a celebration November 1st and 2nd for Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos)? I only have two weeks and just wondering when to begin and whenever to end…needing some input. M. Kingsbury, CO The Jazz and Art Festival starts on the 7th and then there are concerts starting on the 14th and Fiestas de Agua y Sol starts on the 21st. Seems you have a hard decision to make, but we would suggest coming earlier in the month to catch the Jazz and Art Festival, Parrot Mafia Concert and the Peñasco Palooza, but you would miss the Agua y Sol. If you came a little later you could catch the concerts and weekend of fun starting on the 14th and be here for Agua y Sol as well. We have not heard of any “celebration” for Dia de Los Muertos, but the altars are on display and families gather at the cemeteries as always… so, it is entirely up to you. Good luck on your decision! RPTimes I saw something about the sand drags (Thunder on the Beach), but did not see much info about the event. Where exactly will all the events take place and how do we get tickets? Loved go-
ing through the magazine!!!! Lots of things happening in October…made me homesick for Rocky Point. P. Medrano October should be a very busy…and fun month! Thunder on the Beach will be held on Sandy Beach down in front of the Reef. There are two full days of racing – first ever Sprint Car race in Rocky Point – Non-Winged Sprints, USRA Modified, Mini Sprints and Dwarf Cars. You can purchase tickets at the gate and they are $15 USD per person or $150 pesos (each day). Kids under 12 are free with their parents paid admission. Food and beverages are available at the event. RPT: LOVE the on-line magazine! Yolanda Rojas Dugas Sandra, We were in Puerto Peñasco the 9th, 10th, and 11th, of September, paying bills, turning water back on in my house etc. I (like an idiot) tried to give a stray - hot, black, momma dog, with her teats hanging - a drink of water out of my hand and she bit me. I called the Pima County Health Department when I got back to Tucson and they recommended I get the rabies series of shots just because you never know in another country if you can’t find the dog. I didn’t put this comment on your paper site because it was MY FAULT and I didn’t want people adding rabies as a reason not to go to PP. I am sure she does not have rabies or I would have gone to a police station there and reported it. We Google’d Sonora and PP and rabies and there was nothing - so I felt good about that. Anyway, I thought you might just want to put something in the next paper reminding people not to approach stray dogs with hands etc., just bowls of water. The first of my rabies shots were 8 shots including Tetnus and that hurt the most. I had to get 4 shots in the bit-
ten finger and have to go back for more. Hurt like Hell! Sadly, I was just trying to be kind to a doggie, as I have 2 of my own. Just thought others would benefit from my mistake. The Malecon looks nice, but I miss the old one. Keep the home fires burning and enjoy the ocean breeze for me! Penny Johnson Thanks for sharing your experience Penny and we thought our readers would benefit from your “mistake”. I don’t think we have had a case of rabies down here – or at least not that we have heard of - though the dogs do get rabies shots and are usually tagged after doing so. Sorry you were bitten although you probably made Momma Dog’s day. Hi Tom & Sandy, Just sending you an information update. You might want to make the change in the RPT. It is concerning the boat permits for fishing. As of January 2008 boat permits are NO longer required. I am attaching a page from the Conapesca San Diego website providing this info. See you in Rocky Point! Joe & Debbie Roe Thank you for the information and we will get the paper updated. We did verify the information here and they confirmed that no boat licenses are required, but you still need a fishing license and that can be done locally with the Capitania de Puerto. Sandy or Tom, We have been coming to Rocky Point for the last 12 years. Could you tell us if there has been any trouble on the road from Lukeville to Rocky Point? We have heard stories about people being stopped and having their auto or motorhome taken from them. I would appreciate any info you may relay to us. Thank you in advance for your help. Dick and Dee White John and Sandy McCarty. We travel the Rocky Point/Sonoyta
route at least twice a week and have had no troubles. Nor have we heard of any incidents of people being stopped and their vehicles taken. We usually hear of these things, but some things do not make it to us so be careful anyway. The only ones who might stop you are the officials, checking the cars, just like the two checkpoints in the USA, between Gila Bend and the border. We suggest, for added safety, that you not drive at night because of the cattle that roam the open range (as well as horses, goats and other livestock) and the vehicles with no headlights. Hi Sandy: We have subscribed to the Rocky Point Times for many years and certainly look forward to its arrival in our mail box each month. We’ve had a home on Playa Miramar for 15 years, but unfortunately we don’t get down much - yet! Retirement is right around the corner or it was until the economy went crazy. My question - in one of the recent RPT editions - was an article regarding a 24hour help service for almost any type of emergency that a U.S. Citizen might encounter while in Puerto Peñasco. I had intended to save that article but guess it got away from me. We have friends who are making the trip to Mexico in a few weeks and they would like to get that information - would it be possible to get a copy of that article? Thanks for your help and all the useful information you have provided us over the years. L. Thompson Cave Creek, AZ Thank you for being a subscriber to the RPTimes! Never give your past issues away, there’s always something in them that you’ll need. Rocky Point Tourism and Visitor Assistance Office offers 24 hour bilingual assistance to visitors in emergency situations. Their # is 3886624. Chill Out at Michoacana! By Gretchen Ellinger
Icy cold drinks, popsicles and ice cream are sure to please during these October hot days of the year. Most of us are familiar with the Thrifty ice cream stores, but it seems that only locals are familiar with the Michoacana shops. We newcomers to Mexico are missing out on the very special tradition of fruity popsicles and icy cold aguas, sweetened infusions made from fruits, flowers, even nuts, locally prepared daily, and served in large cups with lots of ice…So refreshing! Often recognizable by their pink lettering, there are several small Michoacana shops in different parts of Puerto Peñasco. The largest of the shops is in the downtown business district at the opposite end of the block from TelMex. I always figure that if there is a parking place in front of the Michoacana when I am downtown, then it is my happy destiny for the day to have an agua. The people who work there are friendly, helpful, and more than willing to let you taste a drink before you buy, so don’t be shy about trying new flavors! Also feel free to be adventurous - I usually order half Jamaica (hibiscus flower tea) mixed with
half limonada (lemonade), a combination suggested to me by a Mexican friend. My friend usually orders a fruity popsicle - she says popsicles are necessary in summer for reducing body heat, and she may be right! There is also a “drink shop” in Sonoyta, located on the right side of the road just past the bridge as you are heading south. That is my first stop in Mexico after crossing the border - I just cannot wait for an agua to quench my thirst on the last leg of the trip home. One of the best things about being in a foreign country is learning local traditions; if you try a Michoacana refreshment stand once, you just may decide to add their popsicles and drinks to your “must do” list for trips to Rocky Point.

Good News for Property Owners, Buyers and Sellers: Real Estate Transfer Tax Update By Gretchen Ellinger
Good news in the real estate industry! Good news for property owners, buyers, sellers, and real estate professionals, as well! Last month we had been informed that the state of Sonora had implemented a 1% increase in the transfer tax, in order to increase revenue to the state from real estate sales, to be effective January 1st, 2012. After having received input from groups such as A.M.P.I. (the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals) from both Puerto Peñasco and San Carlos, among others, careful consideration guided state of Sonora officials to the conclusion that the tax increase could have negative consequences to an already-struggling industry. For that reason, the 1% increase to the real estate transfer tax has been shelved indefinitely. This is, indeed, very good news!

Duck Breasts in Walnut and Pomegranate Sauce This is an extremely exotic sweet and sour sauce which originally comes from Iran Hi there!!! This is your friend and chef, Mickey. Well, I’m like all of you I am sure, waiting for these hot days of summer to be over with, but until then we just have to deal with it. Oh well!!! This month’s recipe is something different...
Ingredients... Okay for the sauce you will need... 2 Tablespoons olive oil 2 onions, very thinly sliced 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric 2-1/2 cups walnuts, roughly chopped 4 cups duck or chicken stock 6 pomegranates 4 Tablespoons lemon juice 2 Tablespoons sugar Salt and Ground Pepper to taste
Duck Preparation... (1) Score the skin of the duck breast in a diamond pattern with a sharp knife. Heat remaining oil in frying pan and place duck breasts in...skin side down. (2) Cook gently for 10 minutes (keep pouring off some of the extra fat) until skin is dark golden and crisp. Turn breasts over and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a plate, cover with foil and let rest.
Sauce Preparation... (1) Heat half the oil in a frying pan. Add onions and turmeric, cook gently until soft. (2) Transfer to sauce pan, add walnuts and stock then season with salt and pepper. Stir, then bring to boil and simmer uncovered for 20 minutes (3) Cut pomegranates in half and scoop out seeds. Reserve some seeds for garnish, when we are plating. Transfer remaining seeds to a blender and process to break them up. Strain through a sieve to extract the juice, and then stir in sugar and lemon juice.
Mickey’s Place is located on Sandy Beach, in the Las Palmas Resort Development, right next door to the Sonoran Sun Resort. For dining reservations or information on our Cooking Class, please phone 108-2065 locally or from the U.S. (011-52-638) 108-2065.
Final Preparation... Deglaze the frying pan with the pomegranate juice, then add walnut and stock mixture and simmer for 15 minutes, until thickened. Slice duck and serve drizzled with a little sauce and garnish well with reserved pomegranate seeds. Serve the remaining sauce on the side And there you have it! I hope you will enjoy it like I did. I love duck meat. When cooked properly it is crispy and juicy and very, very tasty. Okay Amigos, until next month. Hope to see all of you soon at my place and don›t forget the first - and only place in town - to enjoy and relax with our Cheese and Wine Happy Hour starting the first week of October. Also starting on the first Saturday of October… Cooking Classes! Where??? Chef Mickey’s Place, of course!!!!

Peñasco Beauty Center Low Prices • Fast and Friendly Service • Walk-ins • Mobile Service Largest Selection of AVON Beauty Products and Supplies
Manicures • Pedicures • Waxing • Skin Care and Make-up Consultations • Acrylic & Gel Nails By Lannette Phipps
Listen up! Ladies…gentlemen…metrosexuals! I do believe I have recently uncovered one of the best kept secrets of Rocky Point: A place where men, women, and children are welcome, and quality, fast service, and low prices rule the day. I know the metrosexuals and ladies are still tuned in, but gentlemen stayed tuned as most of you are in need the services of Peñasco Beauty Center and probably just don’t know it…I’m sure your spouses and girlfriends are well aware of the need and have probably tried to get you in for a pedicure once or twice before to no avail. That’s why I’m going to start this article with the three best things about Peñasco Beauty Salon – like no other in town. 1. Mobile Service: They bring their services to you – whether you are here for a day or live here full-time. They bring their supplies with them to pamper you in your own home. Your spouse can get her nails done while you receive (a much needed) pedicure and/or manicure. Or you can both get pedicures as well as many of their other services. In the comfort of your own home – you go nowhere! All of their services are available “togo” and, if you’re already one of Kit’s AVON customers, you can even have your order delivered or browse the catalog and set up an order to be picked up or delivered next time you decide you need some pampering. I can think of nothing better than not having to leave my house to get my acrylic nails touched up and a soothing pedicure. Their Mobile Service charge is only $5 and, with their incredibly
low prices, you’ll feel you got a steal of a deal. 2. Fast Service: For me, getting a new set of acrylic nails is like Chinese Water Torture (whatever that is, but it doesn’t sound pleasant). I love the nails, but the 3-6 hours it can take out of my life, every 4 to 6 weeks, is a killer. I eventually end up chewing them off because I just can’t stand to sit in a chair for that many hours once again. They sure do look pretty, but the agony is just too much. I went to Peñasco Beauty Center, located on Ave. Constitucion, across from Super Ley and had my new set of nails on in less than 1-1/2 hours. It may have been less than that, but Kit and I were chattering away. I didn’t know about the Mobile Service at the time of my appointment, but that’s the way I’m going next time. And the men in my house will be getting pedicures as well. Now if they only did dogs, I would be in Heaven! 3. Inexpensive! Inexpensive! Inexpensive! I hate to talk about the economy, but let’s face it – the less I have to spend to get what I want the better. Peñasco Beauty Supply offers great prices: $20 USD for a full set of acrylic or gel nails (add the time onto that and I’m a customer for life!); $16 for a fill; $20 for a pedicure with paraffin wax. So, $16 for a fill, $20 for a pedi, $5 mobile fee and a 20% tip and I am under $50 USD and never had to leave my house! Now that I’ve started with my 3 favorite things about Peñasco Beauty Supply, I guess we can talk a bit about Kit Anderson, AVON products and
the rest of her salon. I have been receiving Kit’s Newsletters for a few years now about her AVON products, but not being an AVON user for years, I must admit I was not very interested – that was until I went and visited her shop. Not only that, but I went to the Dollar Store the other day for a tube of mascara and found out it was $8! I nearly keeled over. Those who know my make-up habits, or lack thereof, know it takes me 2 to 3 years to go through
a tube of mascara and they dry up or clump long before then and are ditched. So, when I went through the AVON Catalog and products Kit has on display I was thrilled to find Super Shock Max for under $6. Okay, so it’s only $2 difference, but that $2 plus another .99¢ went to some lip gloss. See, there is a method to my madness. What I am trying to say is that I was very surprised at the immense line of beauty products AVON now has. And Peñasco Beauty Center just happens to have the largest selection of American and Mexican AVON Products you will find anywhere! Kit Anderson and her husband, Kevin Gay have owned property in Rocky Point since about 2003. Kit had been looking for another business venture and found it in AVON. continued on page 36

Kit has been selling AVON Products in Arizona and Rocky Point for the past 4 years and has quite a following, as well as 5 local ladies that sell around the neighborhoods offering home ordering and delivery service. (You can even order from her website and it will be delivered to her store in Peñasco, usually within 10 days. Most of the stuff she has in stock and she is always looking for more people to sell AVON.) Kit Anderson started her store with just AVON Products 3 years ago and decided she wanted to expand to offer more services such as: Pedicures, Manicures, Facials, Waxing, Acrylic and Gel Nails, Skin Care Consulting, MakeOvers, and Make-up Consulting. This part of her salon has been open for 1 year last month and she has plans to offer more services as soon as she can. Kit Anderson is the Make-up and Skin Care Professional at Peñasco Beauty Center and she offers FREE consults! If you need help with problems such as acne, aging, protecting your skin or just daily cleansing or maintenance – she can help. Or if you would like a new look, need a beautiful look for that special occasion or just some pointers on how to apply your makeup, Kit can help – and she offers it all for free. Obviously, there is the hope that you like the products that she uses and your purchase according to your needs. Kit said any product can be returned within 30 days of purchase if you do not like it. And she can also find you the best deal on products AVON offers. Looking through the catalog, I noticed a lot of super great prices and 2-for-1 deals – very inexpensive. If you just want to come in and browse, that’s fine too. They have lots of samples for products you
may want to try before you buy. Peñasco Beauty Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and on Sunday by appointment only. Don’t forget about
their Mobile Service! Walk-Ins are always welcome. I asked Kit what the usual wait time for a walk-in customer is and she said it is very minimal. If by chance, all the girls are with customers, she has a few girls on-call and they rush over within minutes. The staff at PBC consists of: Kit, Makeovers and Skin Care; Kenya, Nails; and Abbi, Nails, Sales, Translator and all-around gal. Ivon specializes in pedicures, facials & waxing and came highly recommended from the Sonoran Spa. They are a very happy bunch who like to have fun, provide the best customer service possible and make their customers feel comfortable and welcome. Kit often peps up special occasions like Valentine’s Day with treats for her customers. In fact, on Halloween, they will be having a Costume Contest for Kids and she will be handing out Halloween
lip balm from AVON and, of course, candy. The Mother of the child who has the best costume will win a beauty product gift bag or a gift certificate – so get your kids dressed up and stop by for your chance to win. Kit is very fun and bubbly and is always up for “Spa Day” parties or ladies get-togethers or anything that she and her staff can contribute to. So, if you know you will have a group of people, or a special event, and want to be pampered for the day, stop by Peñasco Beauty Center or give Kit a call and she will arrange for her gals to come to you. Along with being fun and inventive, she is also fastidious about cleanliness. When they aren’t working, they are cleaning the shop. In fact, a local doctor refers his diabetic patients to PBC for their pedicures because he knows that they are clean, careful and take their time to do a good job. Can’t get a better recommendation than that! Peñasco Beauty Center is stocked full of AVON Products from both the American line and the Mexican line so they have access to a ton of beauty supplies and products, a lot of which she carries in her shop. There are a few ways to order: Stop in PBC and pick out what you want from their supply; pick up a catalog and return or call to place your order; go to her website and order directly. Even if you are in the Phoenix area – or any other area for that matter – you can still order from her website and the items will be shipped directly to your door by selecting «direct delivery» on check-out. If you are ordering from Peñasco, you will need to enter “personal delivery” so that way
Kit will receive your order and have it in her store in approximately 10 days. I wish Kit Anderson a lot of luck with her new salon. I think it is a fantastic service and being able to stay at home, get nails and a pedicure and order beauty supplies is at the top of my indulgence list. Add mimosas and a few friends and it’s a party! Whether you speak English or Spanish, you will feel right at home at Peñasco Beauty Center and they are the only American Salon in Rocky Point. They like to have fun and quality is important to them and they welcome your feedback. Visit them on Constitucion next to Super Ley Supermarket, Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm or Sunday by appointment only. Email Kit at info@penascobeautycenter.com and visit her website at www.penascobeautycenter. com for more services and information. Visit them on Facebook. Stop by, check out their products and services, grab a catalog and some free samples and say hello to Kit, Abbi, Kenya & Ivon. Look for their ad in this issue of the Rocky Point Times Newspaper and receive 10% OFF your first salon visit!

FIRST AID Scorpion Stings First aid for any scorpion sting should involve cooling the wound, which allows the body to more easily break down the molecular structure of the venom. Cooling also reduces pain. Use ice or cool running water if available. On a warm night, a wet compress will help. Keep the victim calm and still. Panic and activity speed up the venom’s spread. Symptoms may include heavy sweating, difficulty swallowing, blurred vision, loss of bowel control, jerky muscular reflexes, and respiratory distress. These serious signs are cause for quick evacuation to a medical facility. Antitoxins are available in many areas where dangerous scorpions live. The doctors, clinics and Red Cross are experts at treating stings. Snake Bites Yes! We do have snakes in Puerto Peñasco. Not usually found in city areas. If you are bitten by a rattlesnake, or any other kind of venmous snake, seek medical attention immediately. Anti-venom is available here in Peñasco. Jellyfish They are usually bright blue and are present in our waters during June, July and August, although they are sometimes hard to see because of the clarity of the water. Some years we have a few, and other years we have tons. In some beach communities, you will find far less than others. A good test to see if they are present, is to look along the tidelines for any that have washed ashore - if they’re up there then
there’s a pretty good chance they’re in the water. Use caution when walking barefoot on the beach or digging through the sand with your hands, they can still sting you (I know from experience). If you are stung, get to a doctor or the Red Cross immediately for treatment. Stingray Stings Our Rocky Point doctors, clinics and Red Cross are well adept at treating stings. The best way to avoid a sting is by doing the “stingray shuffle!” To avoid stepping on a ray, shuffle your feet slowly as you move through the surf to scare the rays away. Round stingrays are very good at burying in the sand and will remain buried even as you approach. By shuffling your feet you will brush against them and they will scurry away. If you walk through the water as you normally do you will most likely step square on the back of them which causes their barbed tail to come up and sting you. Be extra careful in area where the sediment is silty/sand or where the water is particularly warm. What do you do if you get stung by a ray? Get out of the water and head to the nearest doctor. If you are stranded out where these facilities are not available follow these steps and seek medical attention as soon as you can. First, let the wound bleed - this will allow any toxins entered with the barb to get out. Next, immerse the wound in hot water, as hot as the patient can stand for approximately 45 minutes: This denatures the protein toxin and relieves a majority of the pain. Then treat wound as any other puncture wound or cut, keep clean and bandage: This reduces the chance of infection, promotes healing. If pain or bleeding persists, if wound is large or if patient shows signs of an allergic reaction, see a doctor immediately! If you are staying at a resort go to the desk or convenience store - they may have a first aid kit with a treatment.
FISHING PERSONAL WATERCRAFT You do not need to obtain a boat permit for your persona watercraft. However, if you plan to fish from your boat, each person fishing must have a fishing license which can be purchased here in Puerto Peñasco. As with vehicles, it is a good idea to carry two copies of your title and registration for your watercraft and trailer. DO NOT BRING THE ORIGINALS! One copy should be kept on your boat/ watercraft and the other shoud be carried on your person or put in a safe location during your stay. FISHING PERMITS You MUST have a fishing license for everyone onboard a boat, even if they are not fishing, permits are checked. You do not need a permit if you are fishing from the shore. Permits can be obtained locally at the Capitania de Puerto, M-F, 8AM to 3PM or at the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix. Fishing Permit Rates (approx.) Pesos Daily - $106.00; Weekly - $220.00 Monthly - $315.00; Yearly - $410.00 CHARTERS Many charter boats and pangas are available for hire by the hour/half-day/ day, or organized trip. We do not have any companies that rent boats for your personal use. Charter boats are located all over town and at the docks and on your way into Old Port (right hand side) as well as at Safe Marina and in Cholla Bay. Reputable charters are always the best choice. Please make sure there is enough safety gear on the boat for all persons in your party and that the captain has a marine radio in the event of an emergency.

To make a long distance call, your best bet is to find a cafe or internet cafe with a VOIP phone. Second best is to purchase a prepaid phone card (LADATEL) from pharmacies or businesses, and use one of the many pay phones along the streets - follow the instructions on the phone. You can also use one of the long distance (larga distancia) calling services located around town. U.S. CALLING CARDS If you use your calling card and dial an 800#, that is not toll free within Mexico, you will be charged twice for this call - 1 charge for calling the 800 #, and then a 2nd charge on your phone card. The only U.S. cell carrier, we have found to work in Rocky Point 96% of the time, is AT&T’s International Plan. All services work - SMS, MMS, Blackberry, etc.Follow the instructions (left) for dialing the U.S. or Canada, and to dial a land line. To dial a cell phone, you may have to dial 044 + 638 + 7-digit number, or you may just need to drop the 044. Sometimes, when calling a local cell, I had to dial as if I were dialing a cell from the U.S. Check plans and where you spend the most time. TelCel’s Blackberry plan is much cheaper than AT&T’s, plus they have a reasonable International Plan for when I travel to the U.S. You can also get an unlocked phone, buy a SIM card, and switch chips as you cross the border. Mexico cell carriers are supposed to start fingerprinting everyone who purchases a cell phone or SIM card.
