Rosemont College Online Magazine November 2019

Energy! This edition of RoCo tries to capture a bit of the amazing energy felt daily on all corners of Rosemont’s Campus and from all the places touched by Rosemont alumni. In this issue, you’ll be treated to stories of the accomplishments of Rosemont students and alumni who have taken the POWER of small and made it their own. • Testing entrepreneurial waters • Marketing ideas • Pumpkins and soccer • More soccer • Service to others • Sharing their experiences And so much more. Plus, of course, new Programs. And the new Sharon Latchaw Hirsh Community Center. We hope you get a charge from the stories in RoCo. Let us know what you are doing! Have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving from the staff at RoCo.

This has been a busy, beautiful Fall for the Rosemont Community! A successful soccer season for both the women’s and men’s teams, the fun shared by students and alumni at Oktoberfest, and the excitement of the new Community Center taking shape before our eyes have made this a memorable Fall. I look forward to seeing you at the events still to come. I especially invite you to attend the Grand Opening and Dedication of the new Community Center at an open house on Saturday, November 16th, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Get to know our newest space, which will be an important site for Rosemont activities for decades to come. Our newest tradition will be kicked off (literally) on November 22 at the Rosemont College SGA Turkey Bowl, where representatives of the current classes challenge each other in flag football. Rosemont’s Christmas traditions, including the Penny Toss and Caroling Night on December 8th, and, of course, Christmas Eve Mass in our beautiful Chapel, will wrap up the year with blessings and cheer. It does seem amazing that Thanksgiving is nearly upon us. And please know that when I am counting my blessings, I’ll be including you! I’m so grateful for my colleagues at the College, whether staff or faculty of the Undergraduate College and the Schools of Graduate and Professional Studies, and the College’s loyal alumni and donors. And most importantly, I am grateful for Rosemont’s students, and how they embrace the opportunities offered by the POWER of small. - President Hirsh

Three Students Test Entrepreneurial Waters

Jennifer Zoga, Assistant Professor in the Business Department at Rosemont College, is piloting a Start Your Business Incubator program. Designed for students who are serious and ready to become entrepreneurs, Zoga interviewed and accepted this year’s cohort of three who are working throughout the fall semester to write their business and financial plans and prototype their Minimum Viable Products (MVP).

Krista Eisenhardt, a senior

and a dual major in business and marketing, has always dreamed of owning her own wedding coordinating business. She is in the process of launching Everlasting Events to create unforgettable moments for her clients. “This incubator is a great experience, getting me prepared and finding the right path for my future.” Eisenhardt recognizes that brides want to savor the entire process of planning their wedding and is creating a comprehensive experience and support service for her future clients.

Jai’len Jeffcoat, a sophomore

communications major, joined the incubator internship program because “I see an opportunity that can greatly help me with my business idea in the comfort of my school.” Also taking inspiration from the crowdsourcing/gig economy, Jeffcoat’s entrepreneurial idea aims to disrupt the gas station business model.

Kemar Reid, a senior marketing major, is using the tools from the Start Your Business Incubator program to create an affordable car rental company. Reid cleverly saw an opportunity from the new crowdsourcing/ gig economy. “My business is all about helping people become independent business owners... [It will] allow people to rent cars to work for Door-Dash, Uber, Uber Eats and other.”

Alumni Help To Celebrate Oktoberfest

Members of the Rosemont Alumni Association Board of Directors got an early start on the morning of Oktoberfest to gather for their first meeting of the 2019-20 academic year. Pictured, from left to right, are: Back Row: Jean C. Ebbott ‘84, Board President Eileen McMonagle ’75, Ben McGinty ’00, Director of Alumni Relations Joe Darrah ’11, and President Hirsh. Front Row: President-Elect Linda Romanowski ’75, Paula Iacovelli Wholey ‘74, Elizabeth McCluskey ’95, Helen McDevitt-Smith ’63, and Lauren K. Hunter Farrell ‘04.

Our alumni tent was packed during Oktoberfest 2019, with alumni of all ages, including more than 30 former soccer players who played in a co-ed alumni game Saturday morning on the turf field, and their families showing up to campus for a day full of fall festivities and reminiscing. The group of soccer alumni helped to usher in what might just become an annual game during Oktoberfest, and today’s students and younger alumni got an introduction to Rosie The Rosemonster, who fearlessly ran through the pumpkin patch with many of the children on campus and rode down the zip line. We also had a 50/50 raffle that raised a few hundred dollars for the Experience Fund (and an alumni winner of course). Thanks to all those who attended the event and helped us to plan it!

Rosemont Realtors Reunited Three alumnae from classes of the 1980s recently visited campus to be interviewed for an upcoming magazine article about how they have all become reunited through their work at Berkshire Hathaway in Devon, PA. Class of 1956 Names Classrooms

Louise A. Havens, Trustee, and Brian Jones, Scholarship Grant Administrator, of the William Willoff Smith Charitable Trust, which has granted scholarships to Rosemont Students since 1991, visited Rosemont on November 7. They met with President Hirsh and students who are currently Smith Scholars. Sixteen students currently at Rosemont receive financial aid from the Trust, which grants funds based on need to students from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties and the City of Camden, New Jersey, who attend SEPCHE Colleges.

“The Class of 1956 generously donated $20,000 through the Class Giving Campaign at their 60th Reunion, and recently chose to name two classrooms in Good Counsel in honor of their Rosemont education and experience.“

Scenes From The Cornelian Yearbook

Rosemont College Christmas The tinsel was surely in abundance on the Rosemont College campus during Christmas time in 1969, and these scenes from the 1970 yearbook capture the spirit of the season perfectly—even if some of the trees pictured were still awaiting their silver and gold.

The Class of 1970 celebrates its 50th Class Reunion in 2020. Merry Christmas to this special group, and to all Rosemont College alumni!

Mary Monahan Fanelli ’46 Visits Campus

After living in Shenandoah, PA, for more than 90 years, Mary Monahan Fanelli, an alumna from the Class of 1946, recently relocated to Wynnewood … and has frequently taken the opportunity to drive through the Rosemont College campus, where she once spent so much time, with her daughters Mimi and Mary Jude. Driving through the campus brought back many memories, and on Oct. 14, Mary had the opportunity to actually visit the staff in the Alumni Office, Archives, and Campus Ministry to walk through Main Building (known to her as Rathalla during her student days), be interviewed for an Oral History, and turn through the pages of her yearbook while sharing stories of her time at Rosemont. One of those stories included the time that she traveled in a horse and buggy to a Villanova dance (Mary is second from left in this photo, a newspaper clipping from the Philadelphia Inquirer).
