Rosemont Appoints New President The Board of Trustees of Rosemont College is pleased to announce the appointment of Jayson Boyers, EdD as the College’s 14th President. Currently the President of Cleary University in Howell, Michigan, Dr. Boyers will assume office on July 1st, following the May 31st retirement of President Sharon Latchaw Hirsh, PhD. As I write this, the Spring semester is flying by. While I am still very much coming to terms with the fact that it will be my last one as President, I can’t help but be excited for all that is ahead for Rosemont this semester and beyond. A few weeks ago, the Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Jayson Boyers will become the College’s 14th President on July 1st. I am looking forward to seeing Dr. Boyers when he visits campus this month and again in March, and to working with him to ensure a smooth transition for the entire College community. When Dr. Boyers is on campus next week, two Open Forums for all students, faculty, staff, and administrators will be held, so that he can get to know as many members of the campus community as possible. Stay tuned for those dates and times. We also announced in recent weeks that Sr. Veronica Openibo, SHCJ will deliver the address at Rosemont’s 97th Commencement on May 16th and will receive an honorary degree at the Ceremony. Not only is she the Society Leader of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, she is internationally known for being one of three women invited to address the Vatican Synod of Bishops on Sexual Abuse in February 2019. In her speech, she boldly called on Pope Francis and nearly 200 cardinals, bishops and leaders of religious orders for accountability and transparency. We are proud that she’ll be at our Commencement. This semester will also include our annual Symposium, Founders’ Week, many alumni events, Academic Honors Day, and much, much more. I hope that the days ahead are filled with as much joy for you as they will be for me! Happy Spring Semester! Sharon Hirsh

Language and Culture: OPENING THE DOORS TO YOUR FUTURE

In December, the International Finance Class – led by Assistant Professor Christine Hagedorn – visited The Wall Street New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Bloomberg headquarters. The students explored the role of lighthouses in early international trade and finance through the National Historic Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island, saw real trades being executed on the NYSE, and learned about the history of the institution to the world of investing. The group then took the subway to the Bloomberg offices, toured the entire operation there, and enjoyed a wonderful lunch in their state-of-the-art facilities.

You are invited to an evening dedicated to the love of languages and cultural diversity.

by Marlo Allen ’20 On Tuesday, January 28th, Thorn Literary and Art Magazine hosted a Poetry Workshop and Open Mic Night on the small stage in the Lawrence Auditorium. Hosting the events were members Ashira Frager and Deaynna Koskulitz, both seniors. The event gave undergraduate students an opportunity to publicly talk, although in a secluded and private area, about the work they have written and to critique each other’s work.

For more information, contact Jess Burns Director of Leadership & Engagement jessica.burns@rosemont.edu

While I intended to cover the event as a reporter/intern for Rosemont’s College Relations office, I was unexpectedly drawn into the event. Here are my thoughts: “I even read my own poetry that night, which I wasn’t expecting. That is how comforting and approachable the circle was; the circle allowed anyone to read their work without judgment of style or topic. Recognizable faces from class were in attendance, which gave everyone a chance to understand their peers on a more intimate and deeper level. It was a safe space to share your own thoughts and stories, even if it had nothing to do with poetry. We learned about our interests in society, how we feel about our own personal experiences, and our favorite ways to write poetry. The event was also an opportunity to get to know other people and hear of their experiences at Rosemont College. We laughed, we listened, we thought, and we exposed our truths on the small stage in Lawrence Auditorium that left the night on a high note of promise and artist expression.”

Success Center

We have changed our name! We want to better reflect what we are. . . a place where all students can work toward academic success. Because words matter, we want the name of our Center to emphasize that we are a place where motivated students congregate to exchange ideas. We are, in fact, a vibrant spot on campus where students gather to read, study, and discuss class material and fine-tune their writing. The Rosemont College Counseling Center invited the Rosemont Community to the Winter 2020 Community Coalition on Alcohol Awareness and Current Drug Trends. Bridget Marley, a CTTS-M Prevention Specialist (Masters level Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist) lead a presentation hosted by Rosemont College’s Counseling Center on the topic surrounding Current Drug Trends, centering around current trends in prevention, education, and use of alcohol and other substances. Attendees were given information about drug trends and prevention as well as goodie bags filled with informative pamphlets.

We are Open Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Click Here to schedule an appointment with a tutor.

Men’s Lacrosse Team Paints Its Pride By Ricardo Vargas ’21 In January, members of the Rosemont College Men’s Lacrosse team repainted their team’s locker room for the opening of their lacrosse 2019-2020 season. The locker room has been the same since the start of the program in 2012, so Head Coach Ernie Shapiro thought it’d be a great idea for a team-bonding event to bring in the new freshmen to join the men’s team for a project with the current players. The team thought it’d be a great idea to renovate the entire locker room with the campus colors, marroon and grey. The Women’s Lacrosse team will use the facility as well as the Men’s Lacrosse team, as will both the Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams. According to a team member, the locker room has been a vital space for the teams to come together and prepare for games. As a major part of these teams’ successes, the goal was to make this place more comfortable. This is only a stepping-stone for success for the athletic teams here at Rosemont.

The 2020 season marks the first year that the CSAC will be sponsoring men’s volleyball as a conference sport. Click here to meet the new coach and to learn more

Butch Brown retires from Rosemont after

55 years!

When walking through Rosemont, you likely ran into Butch Brown during one of his many rounds across campus. For more than five decades, Butch has been a familiar presence in our community, overseeing many responsibilities to ensure campus operations are running safely and smoothly. Butch retired at the end of January after 55 years of service at Rosemont. On Thursday, January 30, members of the Rosemont community and Butch’s family gathered in Main Building to celebrate his many contributions to the College. In attendance were two former presidents, Dorothy Brown and Peg Healy, and dozens of faculty and staff members.
