We at RoCo had fun putting together this first issue of the 2019-2020 academic year for you. Its pages are filled with helpful information for the days ahead. The past few weeks of the semester have been filled for many firsts --- the first day of classes, the first time (for some) away from home, the first time with a new professor, and many more firsts unique to each of us. As far as we are concerned, these firsts are as exciting as New Year’s Day! It is a chance to begin again. It is the opportunity to wipe clean the slate of the past and start anew. It is the beginning of an exciting journey for the new students who enter Rosemont’s Undergraduate College as first year or transfer students, and those adult students who begin their studies in the Schools of Graduate and Professional Studies. They are all now members of this special place and community we know and love as RoCo. And, how about this fun fact -- those beginning the first of their four undergraduate years at Rosemont will graduate in 2023 – one year after our Centennial Year. They will help to usher in the next 100 years of Rosemont’s history! How exciting is that? We hope you enjoy this issue of RoCo! Remember, we love to hear from you. So, be in touch. #RoCo #RoCoDays #RoCoIsBack
Welcome to the 2019-2020 academic year! I feel as if I can’t say that enough this time of year. It is wonderful to see all of our returning students of the Undergraduate College and Schools of Graduate and Professional Studies, and to welcome all of our new students to Rosemont! This semester promises to be a great one. Much of what I am excited about is included in this issue of RoCo. • We will remember our roots and celebrate our present through our annual Heritage Week from October 7th through 12th. • We’ll see so many families and friends, and welcome the Class of 2014 back to campus for their 5th Reunion, at Oktoberfest on October 26th. • And, our new Community Center will officially open and be blessed and dedicated on Saturday, November 16th. Save the Date for our Open House from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m It promises to be a wonderful fall semester!

Business Networking Event Over the summer Rosemont students and faculty attended the Mary Kline Classic Sports & Business Symposium, a charity and sports networking event. Founder Alex Kline holds this event every year in honor of his mother who passed away from brain cancer. The organization invites some of the most successful people in the sports industry to talk about how they got there and what motivated them. This year’s symposium raised over $40,000 for cancer research, enough money to fund three different cancer research projects! This year theme was “Doubt Kills More Dreams Than Failure Ever Will.” The Event had four different panel discussions focusing on the theme: “The Business of Sports,” “Strategy of the Game,” “Evolving Sports Industry,” and “The Front Office and Beyond.” Speakers included Nick Capparelli, Bonnie Clark, Nick Gentile, Rod Strickland, Chrysa Chin, Jessica Holtz, Jason Belzer, John Allgood, Racheal Baker, Marc Eversley, Javon Phillips, and Keynote Speaker David Levy. Rosemont Students got a chance to speak with each speaker at the event. Some of them noted that it was a rewarding moment to be able to speak to industry leaders like Chrysa Chin, Nick Capparelli, or Marc Eversley. Alex Kline even mentioned a conversation he had with a Rosemont student during the symposium!

Reading the World: Ideas That Matter Every first-year student at Rosemont College takes a class called First-Year Connections Seminar. This year, the students are collectively reading Reading the World: Ideas Matter. With 80 readings by some of the world’s greatest thinkers― from Plato to Gandhi, Carl Jung to Edmund O. Wilson, Gloria Anzaldúa to Toni Morrison―Reading the World is the only great ideas reader to offer a global perspective. Selections strike a balance between western and nonwestern, classic and contemporary, longer and shorter, verbal and visual. Alumna Ellen G. Anderson ’92 has generously underwritten the costs of purchasing a copy of Reading the World: Ideas Matter for every first year student.
On Wednesday August 21, First-Year students with the help of their families, the RAs, and the RPLs, moved into their residence halls.
Meet the New Residence Assistants Resident Assistants (RAs) are student leaders who coordinate educational programs and fun activities in the residence halls. There is a Resident Assistant on duty every night to assist in monitoring the safety and security of the building.
Meet the New Raven Peer Leaders RPLs serve as resources for new students, who are making the transition from their previous environment to the diverse academic, intellectual, and social culture of Rosemont College. RPLs are the first impression of the campus community for new students, as well as a staple support system during their first year on campus.
On Friday August 23, First-Year students got to know each other by participating in Rosemont’s annual Playfair.

summer perfecting their skills as education majors. Both Frankie and Holly plan to be teachers and are working towards getting their certificates in Special Education. This past summer, both Rosemont students worked as camp counselors at Radnor Day Camp where they were one-on-one aids to special needs children. “It was an incredible experience to actually put into practice so many of the techniques I have been learning in my Special Education classes at Rosemont. I also really enjoyed making summer camp more enjoyable to a very special little boy!” – Frankie DiGironimo ’21

Friday, September 6, 2019 Friday, October 4, 2019 Friday, November 1, 2019 Deaynna Koskulitz ’20 recently worked a Summer 2019 internship as a Legal Administrative Assistant at Casa Cornelia Law Center, a public-interest law firm located in San Diego, CA. The firm provides pro bono services to victims of human and civil rights violations. During her stay, Deaynna met and spent time with Rosemont alumna Lauraine Esparza ’68. Lauraine was instrumental in not only helping Deaynna to become acclimated to the region, she also helped her to find lodging with friend Marjorie Wahlsten, who lives in close proximity to Casa Cornelia. Read Deaynna’s journal that she kept during her summer stay.

On Aug. 8, more than 20 Rosemont College alumni and staff braved Mother Nature’s elements for the annual Kickball Classic. A heavy rain rolled through an hour before the event’s kickoff, forcing players onto the upper turf field instead of the softball field, but it proved to be a blessing when rain came through again about 45 minutes into game time. But the turf held up and attendees were able to enjoy plenty of social time and dinner from the Nick’s Roast Beef Food Truck – a Philly-area staple. Thanks to alumnae Ashley Montecchio and Jen South for helping to organize, and to all of our alumni attendees! For a list of upcoming alumni events, click here

Scenes From The Cornelian Yearbook The T-Tones started originally as an octet that extended out from the College’s Glee Club. The group received its name after spending a large portion of time performing in the Tea House. Beginning in 1957, the T-Tones began playing at Glee Club Concerts as special guests. The group consisted of 15 students until they became completely independent of the Glee Club and admission was reduced to 11. The group was also noted for writing and recording an album of their own work in New York City in November, 1967.
1940 Women’s Basketball Team The Rosemont College women’s basketball team went 6-2 in 1940, including an intense, 25-23 win over rival Bryn Mawr. Local residents who were neighbors of the late Victoria Donohoe ’50, a well-known artist, art critic, and historian, visited the Rosemont College Archives in July to view the collection of Victoria’s personal and professional papers, articles, and photographs donated in October 2018. The neighbors from Narbrook Park returned to receive an update on the progress of the housing, arranging, and describing the records from members of the Archives staff. “In the City” is a visual exploration of the environs we inhabit. The East Coast is unique in its architecture, geography, and natural environment. This group exhibition brings together four artists whose individual works together show a multifaceted variety of cityscape with the east coast city as creative catalyst. From modern skyscrapers and iconic landmarks to graffiti-ed back alleys and vast freeway networks, to train bridges and gritty rail yards, all are subjects for these innovative artists.
