Rosemont College Online Magazine November 2018
It is the little things. It always is. It is finding out that your favorite ice cream is in Cardinal when you go to lunch. Or your friend texting at the moment you needed her to with exactly the words you needed to read. Or hearing the song on Spotify that goes right to your core. It is the stranger in the car next to you who lets you merge ahead of him when you are in a rush. Or the compliment you get from your professor after you put in extra hours to ace a project. Or just looking up at the sky from Connelly Green and watching the birds soar without seemingly a care in the world. It is the little things that we are grateful for. It always is. As we approach this Thanksgiving, we at RoCo invite you to remember and reflect on the things, both little and large, that make Rosemont College the special place that it is. This issue of RoCo highlights some of the many things at Rosemont for which we are grateful. We hope you enjoy learning about them, as much as we did! We would like to know the things you are thankful for this Thanksgiving season, so be in touch. We love to hear from you! Happy reading. #RoCoGivesThanks #RoCoLove #RoCo
The Fall semester is flying by! Thanksgiving is nearly upon us. (And so are exams and final papers, but we won’t dwell on that!) I am especially looking forward to the traditional activities of the end of the semester – the Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service on November 19th, the Penny Toss and Caroling Night on December 2nd, and, of course, Christmas Eve Mass in our beautiful Chapel. I look forward to seeing many of you at these events, and many others like the Jest & Gesture performance of Our Town on November 16th and the Holiday Extravaganza by Cornelia’s Choir on November 17th. And please know that this Thanksgiving when I am counting my blessings, I’ll be including you! I’m so grateful for my colleagues at the College, whether in the maintenance department or the business office or every other office in between, and their tireless work to enhance the lives of our students. I’m indebted to our gifted faculty, in both the Undergraduate College and the Schools of Graduate and Professional Studies, and their expertise in the classroom that truly brings out the best in each and every student. I’m thankful for the College’s loyal alumni and donors, and their generous support of Rosemont’s present and her future. And, last and most importantly, I am grateful for Rosemont’s students, and how they live the POWER of small in every aspect of their lives.

Sister Jeanne, our very own “Flying Nun” enjoyed the festivities at Oktoberfest.
Rosemont’s annual Oktoberfest welcomed more than 300 alumni, students, and their families to enjoy festive fall fun for guests of all ages. Families took time to pick and paint pumpkins, pausing for photo opportunities among the scarecrows and bales of hay in the patch. Other daring Ravens challenged one another to see who could take the longest ride on the mechanical bull, while some of the younger guests jumped their hearts out nearby in the bounce house. Let’s not forget that this is also the one time of year you can catch a glimpse of Rosemont’s own “Flying Nun.” In a blink of an eye, our beloved Sister Jeanne Hatch zoomed past cheering onlookers as she took her turn on the zip line. Whether it was time spent in the Alumni Beer Garden or diving into plates of kielbasa, the crowd’s laughter was always heard echoing louder than the music.

Rosemont PRIDE This fall, Rosemont College joined over 1,000 colleges and universities around the nation by implementing a test optional policy for incoming Undergraduate students. Titled ROCO Option, the new policy allows students who have a weighted high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher to apply to Rosemont without submitting their SAT or ACT scores. In place of the submission of their standardized test scores, an interview is required. To help get the word out about ROCO Option in the Delaware Valley, the College advertised by placing television commercials on Comcast cable channels and FOX-29, traffic sponsorships on KYW-3, PHL-17, and FOX-29, billboards on Routes 676, 76, and 95, as well as other highways and roadways. In addition, the College advertised inside and outside of the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Here is a snapshot of some of the advertising that has been in the Philadelphia area this fall. We hope seeing it brings out YOUR Rosemont Pride!

Rosemont College Announces New Online PK-12 English Language Learners Certification
Rosemont College is proud to announce a new PK-12 English Language Learners (ELL) Certification for educators. The new program – offered fully online – can be completed in as little as one year. Educators can add the certification to an existing Instructional I or Instructional II Certification by taking 16 additional credits, or six courses. The program prepares educators to teach non-native speakers of English to become proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English. “The new ELL Certification will allow educators to increase their marketability,” said Denise Falconi, EdD, Director of Teacher Education and Certification Officer at Rosemont College. “A certification in PK-12 ELL will enhance teachers’ ability to work successfully with English language learners in the classroom and enhance their career opportunities across public, private, and independent schools.” The new program is one of four Pennsylvania Department of Education certifications available on the graduate level at Rosemont College. Courses are offered in a traditional or accelerated format in late afternoon and in the evening to accommodate working professionals’ schedules. City of Philadelphia Chief Integrity Officer Speaks at Rosemont College Rosemont College welcomed Ellen Mattleman Kaplan, Chief Integrity Officer of the City of Philadelphia, on November 5 for a lecture in the Rotwitt Theater. Kaplan shared her views on ethics in government and spoke about her role in promoting the values of transparency, honesty, fairness, among others, in Philadelphia city government. “If people don’t trust you, they won’t trust the decisions you make,” she said. Kaplan provides guidance to the mayor’s office and city employees on accepting and declining gifts, city contracts, and procurement opportunities. During the Q&A, she encouraged students to get involved in local government and spoke about internship programs and entry level career opportunities. “You have to have a passion for the field to be in government service,” she said. Kaplan came to City Hall at the start of the Kenney administration in January 2016. Prior to her currentrole, she served as Vice Presidentand Policy Director for the Committee of Seventy, a nonprofit government watchdog and think tank organization.
Symposium 2019
Machines, Minds, and Morality: Ethics in a Changing Technological World
This year’s symposium on Friday, April 5th will be of interest to anyone who is affected by new technologies – that is, everyone! There is little doubt that advances in technology, particularly in machine learning and artificial intelligence, have improved our lives and helped increase efficiency in a variety of ways. But novel technologies inevitably raise important ethical questions, and in the case of these kinds of technologies, the stakes are quite high. It is crucial to have dialogue on issues such as Big Data and transparency (do you know how much Google knows about you?), algorithmic biases (do some hiring tests exclude persons from low-income neighborhoods?), self-driving cars (should a car be programmed to swerve and potentially kill a pedestrian if it can avoid killing five?), and many others, before these technologies become embedded in our daily lives. The keynote presentation will be delivered by David J. Farber, co-Director of the Cyber Civilization Research Center at Keio University (Tokyo). Dr. Farber, who will speak on “The Benefits, Dangers, and Dilemmas of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence,” was a pioneer researcher whose work on distributed computer systems contributed to the development of the Internet as we know it today. Dr. Farber’s talk will be followed by several breakout sessions and a culminating panel discussion.
