Rosemont College Online Magazine March 2018
Spring is in the air! It is so close, we can almost taste it. Before we know it, Rosemont’s campus will be awash in budding trees and blooming daffodils, our colorful Adirondack chairs will reappear, and our campus geese will be followed around by their goslings. And with the arrival of spring to campus comes the flurry of events and activities that make up the second semester – Founders’ Week, the Petaltones’ Annual Concert, Academic Honors Day, the Institute’s Symposium, the lacrosse and softball seasons, the Spring Formal, the Rose Mass and Luncheon for Alumni, and much more. The second semester will culminate in the College’s 95th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 12th. No other day on campus is quite like Commencement. It is a day in which the College celebrates the academic achievements of all of our graduates from the Undergraduate College and the Schools of Graduate and Professional Studies. It is a day when our smiles are a little broader, our hearts beat a little faster, and our tears come a little quicker. It is a day for family pictures. It is a day for prayers of relief and prayers of gratitude. It is a day for balloons, bouquets of flowers, and champagne. It is a day when we are sad because it is over, but joyful because it has just begun. It is a day when each graduate who processes across the stage to accept their diploma from President Hirsh is a living example of the POWER of small. It is a day when we collectively declare that our graduates are Rosemont Made and Rosemont Proud. This issue of RoCo highlights the many ways the members of the Rosemont College community are Rosemont Made and Rosemont Proud, not just at Commencement, but all year long!
#RosemontMade #RosemontProud #RoCo
I was so excited to learn that this issue of RoCo celebrates Rosemont’s pride. Over the past 12 years of my presidency, I have had the pleasure of meeting many remarkable Rosemont College alumni. The most common story of success that I hear, both from recent graduates to those who are returning to campus for their 50th Reunion, is one that makes me very proud. Alumni share that soon after beginning their first professional position or starting in graduate school, they have been asked “Where did you go to college?” with a certain tone of admiration by a non-Rosemont graduate after acing a presentation, landing a deal, or asking a question that made the room stand still. Time after time our alumni recount that it is with great pleasure that they proudly reply, “I went to Rosemont College.” Everyday our current students, alumni, faculty, and staff give me (and you!) so many reasons to be proud. Through their actions, positions, scholarship, accomplishments, professional achievements, volunteer roles, and personal lives, each embodies the College’s mission and the POWER of small. Just last month, the College learned that its very own Erin Entrada Kelly ’16 – an alumna of the MFA program and a current faculty member of the Master’s in Publishing program – was named the 2018 Newbery Medal Recipient for her third novel, Hello, Universe. This honor is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The College will be celebrating this monumental achievement with a book signing and celebration on Saturday, March 17th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in Main Building. All are welcome to attend! – President Hirsh
PS - Keep an eye out for the spring issue of Rosemont Magazine arriving in your mailboxes soon – it highlights graduates of the last five years who are most definitely Rosemont Made and Rosemont Proud.

Getting Down to Business!
The Business Networking Society (open to all majors) attended its first public event, hosted by the Vanguard Group, at Drexel University on February 27, 2018. “I could not have been more proud of our students on this – our first outing,” said Colonel Ringgold, Chair of the Rosemont Business Program. “Our Rosemont students demonstrated a maturity as young professionals in the business world. They stood out among their peers from the other colleges – and they were noticed!”

We at RoCo give a big shout out to the 2017-2018 Women’s and Men’s Basketball Teams!
Not only did the Men’s Team end their season with a 17-10 record and a third straight trip to the semifinals and the Women’s Team see its second best season in school history end with a 15-11 mark and a third playoff appearance in the past four years, both teams thrilled us with every move they made. They played with heart, and they made our hearts beat a little faster with every point they scored and every game they won. They are indeed Rosemont Made and Rosemont Proud. Thank you for an amazing season!

Duffy’s Cut Revisited Michelle Ortiz
In the summer of 1832, fifty seven Irish immigrant laborers died of violence and cholera while building mile 59 of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad near present-day Malvern, in what may be the worst mass murder in Pennsylvania history. For sixteen years, the Duffy’s Cut Project has sought to shed light on this 186-year-old tragedy.
