Rosemont College Online Magazine April 2019

Here we are again. Tomorrow is May 1st. How is it that another academic year is nearly over? These last few weeks of March and April have been host to some of the College’s most important and memorable events. Whether it was the fun of Founders’ Week, the excitement of Decision Day, the pride of Academic Honors Day, or the stress of final exams and Senior Comprehensive Exams and Capstone Projects --- all have kept us very busy, and have served as reminders that Rosemont College is a community. And, a close one, at that. If you can believe it, only 11 days remain until the College celebrates its 96th Commencement ceremony. And, don’t blink, because the festivities of Reunion will take place on June 1st and 2nd! Which brings us to this issue of RoCo. Not only is it full of the latest news of our Rosemont community, but it will briefly introduce you to some of our 2019 graduates. They have truly made the most of the POWER of small during their time at Rosemont, and they will continue to live it in their lives after Rosemont. We will be bursting with pride on May 11th as they each walk across the stage to accept their well-earned diplomas and join the alumni community. And, that is the best part. Our students’ journeys with Rosemont don’t end with Commencement. After all, the word Commencement literally means “a beginning or start.” So, as this 2018-2019 academic year comes to a close, let’s all remember that Commencement isn’t an ending. It is the beginning of a new chapter. We all always have a home at Rosemont. After all, another Rosemont Reunion is just around the corner.

#RoCo #RoCoClassOf2019 #RoCoHome PS – W e’ll be back on September 19 with the first issue of RoCo for the 2019-2020 academic year. Don’t forget to be in touch over the summer – we love to hear from you!

Wow. It has been a busy Spring at Rosemont! Not only was our calendar packed with all of the events that this time of year brings, but we’ve been watching the new Community Center come to life right in front of our eyes! Don’t miss the photos of the very memorable “Beam Signing” that took place during Founders’ Week in this issue of RoCo. The Community Center will enhance life on campus for all students, faculty, staff, and our neighbors. The new Center, which will be 73,000 square feet once completed, has had a few construction setbacks, mostly due to the historic levels of rain of the summer and fall of 2018. However, we are still very much on track to open the first floor of the Community Center in August of 2019, and host our Grand Opening Celebration on November 16th. Stay tuned for more specifics on that very special day for Rosemont! And, we have a Centennial to begin planning! The College will celebrate its 100th Anniversary in the 2021-2022 academic year. A Centennial Committee of faculty, staff, students, alumni, trustees, and friends of the College will begin its work this summer. More to come on that for sure! I do wish each and every one of you a wonderful summer. Don’t be a stranger… there’s still plenty of life on campus, especially this summer! Stop by and visit. – President Hirsh

The Business Networking Society and Rosegrow joined forces on March 18 for a movie night in Rotwitt Theater to bring together students who were interested in discussing the intersection of global climate change, environmental issues, and business. Led by Professors Hagedorn and Dumas and joined by President Hirsh, the coalition discussed how they can raise awareness about their behavior and impact on the environment and what types of changes they can make to better the environment here in our own community.

Founders’ Day 2019

Foundersʼ Day 2019 Founders’ Week was held April 7 through April 13 during a weeklong celebration honoring Founders old and new in the community. This year’s events featured a panel by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus on immigration at the California border, the Petaltones concert, the annual awards luncheon, campus carnival, softball game, and more. An exciting addition for this year was the opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to sign a beam that will be installed in the new Community Center building. The whole campus enjoyed celebrating what makes Rosemont College so special!

The Petaltones held their annual concert on Tuesday April 9th. The event marked their 15th anniversary of making music at Rosemont College. Mock Interviews with Alumni

Over 25 Rosemont College alumni helped to launch our first Mock Interview event this semester. More than 50 current students from all class years were involved in the event, which was held March 15 in the Kistler Memorial Library. During 45-minute scheduled interviews, alumni engaged students by asking them typical questions that are often posed by today’s employers and offered resume reviews, as well as general career-initiating strategies. Hosted by the department of Experiential Opportunities and Post Graduate Success and the Office of Alumni Relations, the event is expected to develop into an ongoing initiative to be held each semester.

Professional Tips for Summertime!

Business Department & Alumni Relations Launch Young Business Alumni Networking Reception In an ongoing effort to keep her current and former students well connected, Christine A. Hagedorn, DM, Assistant Professor and Discipline Coordinator for the Business Studies Department, has helped to initiate a unique opportunity that is expected to become a staple on the Rosemont College campus: the Young Business Alumni Networking Reception. Specifically geared toward alumni who have graduated within the last five years, this event invited business graduates to share their professional experiences with current students and faculty to educate soon-to-be graduates about what to expect in the “working world” and to reconnect with faculty and their classmates to strengthen their networking opportunities. To join this budding network, contact Professor Hagedorn at christine.hagedorn@rosemont.edu or Joe Darrah, Director of Alumni Relations, at joe.darrah@rosemont.edu.

I just spotted these mystery photos in the recent issue of RoCo and recognized the two in the upper left corner! On the left is Sue Wickersham Sproat ‘78 and the right is Margaret Whelan ‘78. They were roommates, and this picture was taken in Heffernan Hall senior year. I lived next door. They both loved Pepsi and this is a DIET Pepsi “tree” that represented their move away from sugar sodas and sweets. It was built against a wall in their room and they added to it daily. They are still close friends of mine and were bridesmaids in my wedding! Looking forward to more photos!
