April, May, and June. Say that phrase at Rosemont, and you’ll likely be met with the following response, “It is the busiest time of the year.” And there is truth to that! These three months manage to host some of the College’s most important and memorable events. Whether it is the fun of Founders’ Week in April, the pomp and circumstance of Commencement in May, the festivities of Reunion in June, or the many things in between --- Decision Day, Academic Honors Day, final exams, Senior formal, and playoffs --- all are events that celebrate that Rosemont College is a community. And, a close one, at that. At each and every one of these milestone events of April, May, and June, a camera would capture that sense of community through many smiles, much laughter, a lot of pride, some sighs of relief, and a few tears – both happy and sad. This issue of RoCo serves as that camera. We’ve compiled our favorite photos of these memorable events to share with you. We think you will agree that “a picture’s worth a thousand words.” We invite you to sit back, relax, and take a few moments to savor the memories that these crazy and hectic three months have created and how they have celebrated ‘community’ at Rosemont. We predict that you might just be convinced not to describe April, May, and June as the “busiest time of the year,” but as the “best time of the year.” We were. Enjoy!

The whirlwind of the spring semester is behind us, and the days of summer are upon us. This spring was certainly an exciting one – our campus was alive with activity, and I’m especially pleased that we were able to come together as a community in so many ways to celebrate the College. For me, a highlight of the spring was the ceremonial groundbreaking of our new Community Center. Held on May 1st as a part of our traditional Reading Day, this event marked a historic day in the life of our College as we celebrated the building that will enhance life on campus for all students, faculty, staff, and our neighbors. Some photos of this memorable day are featured in this issue of RoCo. The construction of the Community Center will be one of the key activities of the summer. Our new 73,000 square foot Community Center is due to open in August of 2019, and in order for that to happen, the construction will continue through the 2018-2019 academic year. Thankfully, the operations of our dining hall will not be impacted until the summer of 2019. Stay tuned for more specifics on that as construction progresses. This summer Rosemont will once again be home to several camps – The Handwork Studio, Camp Pegasus, Emagination, and Lavner Camps. We are proud to host them again this year, and look forward to sharing the summer with them and their young campers. In addition, the College will be hosting students from Ferris University in Japan, making updates to classrooms, replacing the roofs of Alumnae Hall and repairing the roofs of the Brown Science Building, and Lawrence Hall, replacing several slate walkways, and preparing for the fall semester. I wish each and every one of you a wonderful summer. Don’t be a stranger … there’s still plenty of life on campus, especially this summer! Stop by and visit. – President Hirsh

Academic Honors Day brings the Rosemont College community together to celebrate the wonderful work of students and faculty. It’s an opportunity to recognize all the people who help academic excellence thrive at Rosemont – including mentors, encouraging parents and family members, engaging faculty, and inspiring alumni. This year’s ceremony was held in the Rotwitt Theater of McShain Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 21. During the event, the College recognized students who have been named to the Kistler Honor Society, Delta

Epsilon Sigma, and Sigma Tau Delta. Julie Capece received the Outstanding Junior Award, while seniors Mary Manfredi and Lizzie Walton were awarded Presidential Medals—the highest honor bestowed upon a student. In addition, this year, Rosemont instituted two new awards to recognize the excellence of our Undergraduate faculty. Taking home the Distinguished Teaching Award for Full-Time Undergraduate Faculty was Katherine Baker, while Dr. Stephen Paul received the Award for Adjunct Undergraduate Faculty.

Founders’ Week celebrates both the historical and contemporary founders of Rosemont College. Every year, as part of our Founders’ Week celebrations, the College holds an Awards Luncheon, to celebrate the spirit, selfless service, dedication, and leadership of students, staff, and faculty. Among the awards given out were the Community Spirit Awards, Spotlight Awards, Class Leadership Awards, Love in Action Award, Outstanding Service Award, Ethel C. Levenson Award, Patti K. McClatchy Award, Dean

of Students Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, employees were honored for years of service and new members of the Student Government Association Executive Board were sworn in. To conclude Founder’s Week, the College held a picnic on May 3. At the event, students enjoyed barbeque and carnival games on Connelly Green before demolishing Rosemont faculty and staff in the annual softball game.

Mayor Jim Kenny presents Rosemont Professor with Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell Newbery Medalist and Rosemont Professor Erin Entrada Kelly ’00 was presented with Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell by Mayor Jim Kenney on May 11 at Philadelphia City Hall. The bell was given to Erin in honor of her novel, Hello, Universe, which took home the Newbery Medal for the outstanding children’s book of 2017. Children from the nonprofit literacy organization Mighty Writers were also in attendance. Eager to learn more about writing and Hello, Universe, the enthusiastic youngsters took part in a Q&A session with Erin following the presentation. A proud graduate of Rosemont’s MFA program, Erin currently teaches Contemporary Issues in Children’s Literature at the College. Erin’s fourth novel, YOU GO FIRST, was published on April 10, 2018 and is now on the New York Times Best Seller list. The story is set in the Philadelphia area, and like all Erin’s novels, features a diverse cast of memorable characters.

Rosemont Proud Saarah Hussain ‘14 graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine this past May and was honored to give the graduation speech. (In 2014, Saarah was the Undergraduate College student speaker for Rosemont’s Commencement Ceremony.) Saarah graduated from Drexel as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical academic honors society that elects only the top 1/6 of students from each medical school class based on excellence in academics, research, and community service. She also was elected to the Gold Humanism Honors Society, which recognizes graduating medical students who possess qualities of leadership, compassion, and empathy in all aspects of patient care. Saarah won The Lee Winston Silver Award for Excellence in Pediatrics & the Hahnemann Physicians Society Award for community service and academic excellence. Saarah will be starting her residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). We are #rosemontproud

May 12, 2018 marked Rosemont College’s

commencement ceremony. Rosemont College held its 95th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12 with hundreds of students gathering on Connelly Green to celebrate as President Hirsh conferred the degrees for the Undergraduate College and the Schools of Graduate and Professional Studies. Sylvia DiBona ’00, Chairman of the Board of Fred’s Footsteps, served as this year’s Commencement speaker and was granted an honorary doctoral degree by the College’s Board of Trustees. The College also granted honorary degrees to two other alumnae: Veronica M. Ahern, Esq., a 1968 graduate of the Undergraduate College; and Catherine Marengo Nakonetschny, a 1997 graduate of the Undergraduate College and 1999 graduate of the School of Graduate Studies.

Rosemont College was pleased to welcome back the classes of the 3s and 8s for Reunion Weekend June 1st to the 3rd. Returning graduates enjoyed a Campus Tour, the Rose Luncheon, an Alumnae Artists Exhibit Opening, Back to Class Lectures, Art Hour with President Hirsh, as well as a Reading and Cocktail Reception for Alumni of MFA, Publishing, and English Graduate programs. A record number of alumnae from the class of 1968 celebrating their 50th Reunion joined with graduates of 1963 and 1958 for an elegant Rose and Gray Dinner in Cardinal Hall. Because of inclement weather, Gala on the Green was moved from Connelly Green to Main Building. There, alumni enjoyed cocktails and a dinner buffet before taking to the dance floor. It was wonderful to see so many of our alumni reconnecting with one another, reminiscing, and having a great time. Rosemont wishes to thank all those who attended Reunion Weekend 2018. We are pleased so many could join us for this festive weekend!

Community Center Groundbreaking Ceremony

Former Rosemont Presidents Margaret Healy, PhD, Ann Durst, Esq., SHCJ, and Dorothy Brown, EdD attended the Groundbreaking to show their support.

On May 1, Rosemont College held a groundbreaking ceremony in front of Cardinal Hall, the very spot where the construction of a new stateof-the-art community center began last week. The Community Center, which will be over 73,000 square feet when completed, will be the hub of activity on campus, with informal gathering spaces as well as larger spaces for more structured events. In addition, it will house all of the offices for Student Life/Residence Life, the Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bookstore, expanded dining areas, four new smart classrooms, a conference room for group meetings, and a new fitness center. The College expects the Center to open in fall of 2019.

This year’s Academic Honors Day ceremony for the SGPS was held in the Rotwitt Theater of McShain Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 21. James Edward O’Donnell Literature Award, and Yalonda Rice took home the Lily Foundation MFA Award. Randall Brown, a professor in the MFA program, earned the 2018 award for Distinguished Teaching at the Graduate Level. The Rosemont College Presidential Medal for the School of Professional Studies was presented to Lee O’Brien. The Presidential Medal for the School of Graduate Studies was presented to Edward Abel, Jr.
