Welcome to the first edition of Cruise Passenger magazine’s Adventure Cruise Guide. he desire for adventure, discovery and exploration is a fundamental part of the human condition and adventure cruising strikes right at the heart of it. Anyone who has already been on one of these cruises will know how exhilarating they are. Whether it’s Australia’s remarkable Kimberley or superb Great Barrier Reef or the great Antarctic odyssey, adventure and expedition cruising is a travel niche all on its own. It’s true that many people attracted to the adventure ships would never consider cruising on any of the traditional big liners. They prefer the intimate, personal environment, the smaller numbers, the like-minded companions, the enrichment, wild destinations and experiences the big ships just don’t deliver. Because this rapidly growing travel sector is developing such a special following amongst committed adventurers, we’ve recognised it now deserves a dedicated supplement full of all the ships, exciting destinations and itineraries currently on offer. Please contact any of the listed operators in this magazine for more information or brochures on their fantastic journeys and you’ll see why so many people are drawn to this transformational travel experience.

POPULAR ADVENTURE CRUISING DESTINATIONS Many previously inaccessible locations in places as diverse as the Russian Far East, the Amazon, Alaska, New Zealand and The Kimberley have opened up with the growth of adventure cruising. With crafts ranging from icebreakers and clippers to luxury cruisers with Zodiacs to get closer to the action, you can take your cruise to a new level of adventure. 04 ADVENTURE CRUISE GUIDE 2008

Antarctica This iconic wilderness at the end of the Earth is the epitome of the adventure destination. Sailing ‘off the map’ to areas only discovered within the last 100 years, makes Antarctica the must-do itinerary for all serious expedition cruisers. Expeditions to Antarctica take several forms. The simplest are short itineraries of perhaps a week to 10 days to the Antarctic Peninsula from Ushuaia at the very bottom of South America. More ambitious journeys will be by icebreaker, way below the Antarctic Circle to places like McMurdo Sound and Commonwealth Bay. These voyages generally leave from either Tasmania or New Zealand but entail more time at sea in potentially rough conditions.
The Arctic A perfect complement to your southerly expedition, a trip to the Arctic can be as simple as a cruise to Iceland or Greenland, or as heroic as a nuclear icebreaker to the North Pole itself. The current alarm among environmentalists about retreating glaciers and thinning ice pack has created some urgency to visit this region as they attempt to see the great polar bear in its diminishing natural environment. Glaciers too are calving at unprecedented rates. Apart from the North Pole, the great historic North-West Passage across the top of Canada from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean is a true odyssey only a few will ever experience.
The Galapagos Islands Charles Darwin’s evolutionary playground is a great drawcard for those with a penchant for warmer climes. A short flight from Ecuador, most visitors will spend about a week cruising among the many islands in this unique archipelago. Following in the footsteps of the great David Attenborough, visitors will discover the crazy wildlife that makes this place so special. The sinister marine iguanas, the fierce land iguanas, the delightful giant tortoises and the many strange birds and plants make this place a naturalist’s wonder. Like so many delicate ecosystems, man’s influence is being felt here too. ADVENTURE CRUISE GUIDE 2008 05

ADVENTURE CRUISING: DESTINATIONS Zodiacs off the Kimberley coast

Fishing pursuits
Western Australia’s Kimberley The awe-inspiring, rugged and remote regions of the Kimberley are the perfect choice for expedition cruising in our region. Incredible rock formations, abundant birdlife, rich Aboriginal culture and weird natural phenomenon like the horizontal waterfalls attract thousands of visitors every year. Most cruise companies book out a year ahead, such is the popularity of this region. Recent oil and gas exploration in the region have tour and cruise operators very nervous and it is hoped their lobbying will prevent unmanaged development and limit impact of infrastructure.
Tasmania Consider the supremely relaxing Gordon River cruises that explore the incredible and remote UNESCO World Heritage areas of Western Tasmania. Currently no overnight products are available, yet day trips leave regularly from Strahan travelling through Macquarie Harbour, visiting intriguing Sarah Island and one of the last stands of Huon Pine. You might even see one of the incredibly rare yellow-bellied parrots.
Papua New Guinea Often the subject of adverse publicity, the sublime islands of the Bismarck and Solomon Seas exhibit none of the rough lawlessness found in some pockets on the mainland. Expedition cruise companies are falling over themselves to create itineraries in this region and the PNG Tourism authorities are extremely supportive of these initiatives. New Ireland, New Britain, the legendary Trobriands and the mighty Sepik River are the key destinations on most itineraries. The wild frontiers of PNG, so close by, perfectly fit the description of ‘transformational and experiential’ travel. Consider itineraries that cross into neighbouring Melanesia to extend and enhance your experience.
Canoeing on the Amazon
Melanesia Covering thousands of square kilometres, the many islands and nations of the South Pacific have attracted inquisitive cruisers for centuries. French, English and even Spanish pathfinders toured throughout Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Noumea and the Solomon Islands leaving a rich treasure trove of history and culture. More recent historical events have left war relics and wrecks throughout the north west of the region making it a mecca for scuba divers seeking sunken warships and aircraft. Small ship experiences in the region are some of the most enriching on the planet. Away from the tourist traps there are amazing natural and cultural experiences available, especially in emerging destinations in the eastern reaches of PNG, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Here villages have limited contact with westerners and volcanoes still spew smoke, ash and lava into the air.

An Inuit family, Alaska
Amazon This huge river can accommodate cruise ships many hundreds of miles upstream. See the disappearing Amazon Basin jungles, visit remote native tribes and mourn the vanishing landscapes. Over 1800 bird, 250 mammal and 1500 fish species make the vast 6.2-million-square-kilometre basin a biodiversity smorgasbord for naturalists and birdwatchers. A range of remote river lodges in Ecuador, Peru and Brazil are a perfect add-on to any cruising itinerary.
Alaska The relatively brief vacation window in Alaska brings cruisers by the thousands as the megaliners ply the fabled Inside Passage between Anchorage and Vancouver. But most of these visitors, awed by the scenery as it drifts past, will never experience the up-close beauty of an extended shore excursion or a small ship exploration. Kayaking, salmon fishing, bear and bird watching are just some of the must-do activities in the wilderness regions of Alaska and are specialist options offered to adventure cruisers. The Inside Passage is dotted with villages and towns like Petersburg, Ketchikan and Sitka, which offer a mind-boggling range of experiences. Like so many Arctic destinations, global warming is having an impact here and the mighty glaciers of Prince William Sound and elsewhere are receding fast, creating an unforgettable, if saddening, spectacle.
Great Barrier Reef Another threatened ecosystem, Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef has attracted millions of visitors over the years and continues to do so. Many operators offer introductory scuba dives and you’ll be quickly hooked on this sublime, mind-blowing activity. A vast range of vessels operate tours and itineraries ranging from a few hours to over a week. Extended journeys to the Cape York Peninsula perhaps best exemplify the true adventure possibilities as visits to remote islands are also possible. Be quick, the reef will never be as good as it is now.
Tahiti If Antarctica is the hard-edged, hero’s voyage then Tahiti is the soft, creamy-centred bon-bon of adventure cruising. Ever since the first reports
of a tropical wonderland with a mystical uninhibited lifestyle reached Europe, sailors were signing up for the voyage. No wonder Bligh’s crew mutinied. Finally persuaded to side with the French, Tahiti’s myth grew and continues today as a haven for relaxation, indulgence and hedonism. For some, this is adventure enough, with most satisfied to exert themselves with scuba-diving, hiking, kayaking and a remote, romantic Polynesian experience. Tahiti is actually the largest of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. Along with beautiful Bora Bora and Moorea, it soaks up the majority of the tourism trade. Look for itineraries to the Marquesas or Tuamotu Islands for a bit of unusual flair.
Russian Far East Several companies are experimenting with itineraries in the area immediately north of Japan through to the Bering Strait in Siberia. Characterised by isolated ecosystems and volcanic activity on the western perimeter of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, these voyages will always be exclusive. Characterised by bleak and featureless landscapes, these images can be deceptive. Rich marine biodiversity exists all along the coastline and up into the Arctic. A profusion of migratory birds brings birdwatchers from all over the world and sightings of whales (such as orcas and Arctic narwahls), walrus and the magnificent polar bear are features of this destination. Visits to any of the native villages will enthral travellers to the Chukchi province as you meet the hardy, resilient folk who still hunt and fish in the frigid waters.
New Zealand The brilliant scenery and harbours all around New Zealand are attracting adventure cruise companies with ambitious itineraries, including semi-circumnavigations, Milford and Doubtful Sound and Bay of Islands products. Big ships are travelling there in increasing numbers, revelling in the dramatic landscapes, but their rapid passages overlook the fascinating detail of the region that will only ever be revealed in an enriching shore excursion. Predictions are that this destination will continue to grow once the word is out. ADVENTURE CRUISE GUIDE 2008 07

ADVENTURE CRUISING: SHIPS A mighty icebreaker
hen making a decision about your adventure or expedition cruise, do you consider the vessel or the itinerary? Experienced expeditioners will tell you the destination is the primary attraction, but many repeat adventurers will often stay with a favourite vessel or operator, gradually ticking off their list of itineraries. But if you are making a decision about your first adventure or expedition cruise, it is important that you understand the different features and limitations of the various classes of vessels.
W
Their capability is limited because they cannot physically break thick ice, but they are still able to navigate a surprisingly dense pack. Their conventional hulls offer more ocean comfort and most have stabilisers. Helicopters are generally not carried on board.
Icebreaker The mighty icebreaker is, without doubt, the ultimate expedition vessel for the polar regions. Capable of smashing through thick sheets of pack ice, these vessels can travel to the most remote reaches of the planet, including the North Pole. Originally drawn from the Russian working fleet, these vessels have rudimentary facilities compared to the large liners, but their rough’n’ready character often enhances their appeal. Nevertheless, they are modern and sophisticated with state-of-art navigational aids. Cabins are straightforward and comfortable without being lavish and European chefs supply tasty, plentiful food. The downside of the icebreaker is the rounded hull, which makes rough open sea conditions pretty ‘exciting’. Northern itineraries are gentler, but be prepared if you are crossing the mighty Southern Ocean. Often equipped with helicopters for remote access, the icebreaker journey is the badge all true expeditioners aspire to.
Oceanographic vessel Similar to the icebreaker, the oceanographic vessel is another that typifies the spirit of adventure. Ranging from 1000 to about 6000 tonnes with passenger capacity of 50 to 80, these ice-strengthened, mainly Russian ships were purpose-built for the rigours of the Arctic and are sturdy and robust. Some even spent time as spy ships in the old USSR.

Luxury and adventure combine in expedition ships
Expedition ship Slightly softer in expedition capacity than the rugged Russian workhorses, the expedition yacht is akin to a pocket cruise liner with an ice-rating and creature comforts similar to those found on the bigger ships. It is ideal for those who are used to the big ship experience but looking for a more active, intimate alternative.
Expect to find more luxurious cabins and restaurant-style dining with cocktail bars, boutiques and shiny fittings. Some vessels will provide the full range of expedition experience, while others may be less capable. More passengers will limit some shore excursion possibilities. Lengthy and ambitious itineraries can be attempted as most vessels in this class are fully ocean ready, with stabilisers. Passenger capacity is typically over 100 and may range as high as 300 or more with vessels as large as 10,000 tonnes.
Coastal expedition yacht Common in our waters and ideal for regions such as the Kimberley, Great Barrier Reef and Papua New Guinea, these smaller, shallow-draft ships can navigate narrow waterways and rivers offering a slightly more adventurous experience. Still well-appointed with excellent cabin comfort and quality dining, these vessels are focused on the adventure experience with many features designed to deliver maximum enjoyment and comfort, such as easy-loading, walk-on tenders. Not ideally suited to open ocean cruising, they are usually limited to coastal, river and island itineraries with passenger capacity ranging from just 30 to about 100 and weighing in at less than 2000 tonnes.
Others The balance of expedition and adventure vessels falls into this mix of cute, motley craft with many converted private yachts, fishing boats and launches. These relatively tiny vessels may accommodate just a dozen or so passengers, yet can still offer unusually rich and rewarding experiences by virtue of their intimacy and almost negligible impact. You’ll find this kind of boat operating short itineraries in the New Zealand or Alaskan fiords or among the Arctic or tropical islands and rivers. Some will be exquisitely opulent and exclusive, while others are basic and rustic with a wide variety of adventure and leisure capability. Choose carefully to match your expectations. ADVENTURE CRUISING ACTIVITIES The outstanding advantage of small ship expedition cruising is the small numbers aboard. Consequently activities can be planned using very little or even no infrastructure at all. Visits to native villages or shore excursions on remote islands can be conducted with relative ease and manageable impact.

ADVENTURE CRUISING: ACTIVITIES
Here are just some of the exciting activities passengers can enjoy that would be difficult or even impossible to conduct with large ship numbers. Small groups of enthusiastic, like-minded travellers often find their own company as enriching as the excursions as they swap tales and experiences.
Wildlife Viewing
PICKS
It is common for adventure and expedition operators to employ nature and field guides to interpret the natural history of the visited regions. Birds, plants and animals are often a major attraction or even a primary drawcard for many itineraries. The magnificent polar bears of the Arctic and majestic emperor penguins of the south draw inquisitive travellers every year to some of the otherwise most inhospitable regions of the world. If you have a specific wildlife interest, such as birdwatching, you’ll find the adventure and expedition cruise market ideally suited to your passion.
Polar journeys such as Baffin Island in the Arctic or South Georgia in the sub-Antarctic abound with wildlife. Operators like Peregrine, Aurora and Adventure Associates excel in these trips. If you’re looking for a new challenge, consider the Galapagos Islands.
Marine iguanas on the Galapagos
Inuit totems like these can be found in Alaska and British Columbia
History and Culture
PICKS
Whether you are a dilettante or an academic, adventure cruise passengers often share a consuming interest in history and culture. Many itineraries are finely tuned to cater for these interests and include such topics as the war history of the Pacific islands, or enriching encounters with the inhabitants of remote islands of Melanesia. Many of the polar itineraries have expert lecturers on these topics and you’ll quickly find your knowledge of the most obscure and swashbuckling explorers and pioneers considerably enhanced. To set foot on some these impossible remote locations, such as Commonwealth Bay in the Antarctic, is a humbling, intoxicating experience.
Again the astounding Antarctic explorers win the history prize. If you can get to the Ross Sea or visit any of the historic huts then you’ve earned the badge. For culture, it’s hard to go past the colourful and exotic experiences of Papua new Guinea and Melanesia. See Orion Expedition Cruises, North Star or Coral Princess Cruises for PNG.

Australia’s Kimberley coast is gaining reknown for it’s awe inspiring landscape
There will be plenty of opportunities to disembark your ship for an invigorating hike, paddle or leisurely stroll amongst the beautiful scenery you’ve come to enjoy. Some cruise operators will carry kayaks or canoes and a serene paddle in the early hours on a mirror-still lake or river is a fantastic experience. Hiking can be as challenging as an icy crossing of South Georgia on foot or a stroll in the noisy jungle of the Amazon or New Guinea. These close encounters with nature with a dash of exercise are a perfect complement to your cruise experience.
If the blockbuster mountains and fjords of New Zealand impress you, then you must visit the Kimberley. The word is out and the world is on its way. See North Star Cruises, Orion Expedition Cruises and Pearl Sea Coastal Cruises.
PICKS
Hiking, Walking and Kayaking
To be immersed in overwhelmingly beautiful natural surroundings is something that has been described by writers and poets throughout the ages. Some find such exposure overpowering and even quasireligious. You’ll find plenty of glorious vistas on your adventure cruise, especially in regions like our own Kimberley or the wilds of Alaska. Even the desolate landscapes of Antarctica and Siberia have their own allure, leaving many forever transformed by the experience. It will make you even more determined to preserve these natural wonders and respect the beauty of our world.
PICKS
Dramatic Scenery
Serious contenders should consider the Shackleton Crossing of South Georgia while casual strollers can express themselves almost anywhere. Aurora Expeditions are renowned for going on foot.
Serious amateur and professional photographers are drawn to adventure cruising like the proverbial moths. The colourful natives, exotic locations, and wild scenery keep them occupied for hours. Polar journeys inevitably attract their fair share of snappers, but almost everybody has a go regardless of their equipment and expertise. Adventure cruising can be tough on equipment, so be prepared with waterproof bags and padding. Be sure to keep your gear away from salt water - it’s a killer, I know - so travel in zodiacs with your kit well wrapped. Although, a few drops of rainwater won’t hurt.
Even though some of the polar operators offer ice diving, it’s the Great Barrier Reef that’s the accessible underwater gem. Coral Princess Cruises do this superbly. For a change of scenery, experienced divers should consider North Star’s Rowley Shoals adventure.
PICKS
Photography
An easy and effortless activity on many tropical vessels, snorkelling is a great way to view the magnificent coral and fish inhabiting our precious reefs and waterways. Some operators will carry a divemaster able to introduce you to the exciting sport of SCUBA diving. Providing you meet minimum health requirements and do not suffer from things like epilepsy or diabetes, you need no experience to dive with a qualified professional. Even so, most colourful sealife is close to the surface and easily accessible to snorkellers of all ages and abilities. Some polar operators even offer ice diving for experienced divers.

ARANUI 3 Aranui 3 is a unique passenger/freighter that provides the only real lifeline between the Marquesas Archipelago and the outside world. Aranui 3, which was purpose built in 2002, is uniquely designed for its dual role as a freighter/ passenger ship. She carries 2000 tons of cargo and 200 passengers, some 1500 kms north east of Tahiti to some of the most remote and beautiful places in the world. As for the Marquesas Archipelago, it can only be described as a visual paradise of lush, jagged volcanic islands. The unspoiled landscape of the islands is simply breathtaking. Many only have small sparsely populated villages which time has seemingly passed by. Often you, the ship’s passengers, are their only visitors. Remember, this is not a cruise ship. Yet, you will be pleasantly surprised by the amenities onboard.
The accommodation comprises 86 fully airconditioned, serviced cabins; ranging from the top-of-the-range Suites with balconies, to Deluxe cabins and twin bedded Standard A cabins. There are two lounges, a bar, library, swimming pool, sundeck and an elegantly appointed dining room that holds 150 people. Dining is very casual and there is no allocated seating. Another unique aspect of a 13-night voyage on Aranui 3 is that all the land-based excursions are included in the price of the cabin, and free wine is served with both lunch and dinner whilst onboard. The land-based excursions, undertaken in 4WD vehicles, driven by locals, take place while the ship loads and unloads at each destination.

AURORA EXPEDITIONS The remote areas around Commonwealth Bay, across the wild Southern Ocean beneath Australia, are explored by just a tiny percentage of Antarctic travellers. from the Ross Ice Shelf in the east to beyond Commonwealth Bay in East Antarctica. Aurora Expeditions has more than 18 years’ experience cruising the environmentally sensitive Antarctic waters. Departing on December 12, 2008, Aurora’s ‘Icebergs and Emperors’ voyage pushes west to Mawson’s Hut and beyond, where the polar plateau sweeps down to the sea. Emperor penguins roam the ice floes and one of the world’s least-visited coastlines beckons. Beneath huge floating tongues of the Ninnis and Mertz Glaciers, krill breeding grounds attract a variety of whale species. Nearby, the French scientific station, Dumont d’Urville, is set among penguin-rich islands and sculpted icebergs.

Cruising with Aurora Expeditions means you can be one of the fewer than three per cent of people who cross the wild Southern Ocean beneath Australia to reach the most remote areas around Commonwealth Bay. Departing from Hobart, the ice-strengthened ship Marina Svetaeva will be the only helicopterequipped vessel departing from Australia in 2008. Passengers visit massive penguin colonies, the huts of Sir Douglas Mawson’s 1911 Australasian Antarctic Expedition and – using helicopters and inflatable Zodiacs – explore remote offshore islands, coastal ranges and the formidable ice cap that stretches down from the polar plateau. Deep Antarctica, the most historic and southerly region accessible by ship, stretches

BAREBOAT YACHTS & AIR TAHITI NUI Charter a ‘bareboat’ or take a skipper and wake up to something different every day – turquoise Tahiti is sailboat heaven! Tahiti and her islands are best known for their magical over-water bungalows, but why confine yourself to one view of paradise when you can wake up to something different every day? Balmy temperatures, gentle breezes, turquoise reefs rimming bluer-than-blue lagoons and dramatic volcanic islands with plunging ocean cliffs make Tahiti a sailing mecca. Island hop on the trade winds, explore hidden bays, dive on fluorescent reefs, catch the perfect surf break or simply enjoy the intoxicating scents and culture of the world’s most romantic islands. Tahiti offers more than 20 boat charter operations focused on the magical Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora in the Leeward Island Group or on
the romantic island of Tahiti and her stunning sister island Moorea in the Windwards. Charter a sleek Beneteau 50 or a spacious catamaran with or without a skipper, and set your sails for a holiday of a lifetime.
Air Tahiti TahitiNui Nui Air Air Tahiti Nui, the international airline of Tahiti and her sister islands, offers twice-weekly non-stop flights from Sydney to Papeete, with three-class Airbus A340-300 aircraft. BLUE LAGOON CRUISES A cruise to the far reaches of Fiji is also a journey to ancient times where villagers have preserved their culture and customs for hundreds of years. Fiji’s boutique-style Blue Lagoon Cruises has the perfect solution for travellers looking to broaden their horizons with a visit to somewhere uniquely different – the far-flung Yasawa Islands. Blue Lagoon Cruises has been plying the northern fringe of the Fijian archipelago – home to remote villages, deserted islands and an ancient culture dating back to when the first Melanesians set foot in the South Pacific in 500BC – for more than 58 years. Three of the cruise specialist’s fleet of four luxury vessels operate three-, four- and sevenday Club and Gold Club cruises that have equal
appeal to independent travellers, honeymooners or groups of friends and family. Passengers choose from three- and fourday informal Club cruises on board the elegant timber 49-metre MV Nanuya Princess or luxury four- and seven-day Gold Club itineraries on the 56-metre MV Mystique Princess or flagship, the 60-metre catamaran, MV Fiji Princess. Two special-interest programs also operate each year. A seven-day historical and cultural dateline tour visits Fiji’s remote north-eastern tip and a ‘Cruise in Luxury – Dive in Paradise’ scuba itinerary offers a rare chance to dive the Yasawa Islands’ world-class dive locations.

CORAL PRINCESS CRUISES With almost 25 years’ experience, Coral Princess Cruises proves that small ship cruising can deliver big itineraries and stylish travel. Having pioneered the concept of luxury small ship cruising on the Great Barrier Reef and along Western Australia’s spectacular Kimberley Coast, multi-award-winning Coral Princess Cruises continues to deliver innovative itineraries to adventurous passengers. Exotic South Pacific destinations include Papua New Guinea, Melanesia, Vanuatu and New Zealand. After commencing operations on the Great Barrier Reef with a converted Fairmile Class vessel in 1984, this Australian family-owned company has since forged a reputation as one of the world’s leading small ship cruise lines. Coral Princess Cruises operate a fleet of three state-of-the-art small ships, Coral Princess, Coral Princess II and the newly launched, 63-metre flagship, Oceanic Discoverer. Each is designed with all the comfort and facilities of larger cruise ships, yet they are small enough to enable access to reef and island sites out of the reach of larger vessels. Cruising with a purpose-built excursion vessel, a fleet of inflatable Zodiacs and a glass-bottomed
boat, guests can intimately explore the scenery. Expert guides interpret the natural, cultural and historical highlights of the region. In true expedition style, itineraries may vary to take maximum advantage of opportunities to visit local villages and attractions. Coral Princess Cruises sail to emerging destinations such as Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. They also offer a unique perspective on destinations such as Vanuatu and New Caledonia. New Zealand’s stunning northern coastline and Bay of Islands feature in a summer cruising schedule between December and March each year. Closer to home, the company’s popular Kimberley Coast itineraries introduce guests to the rugged scenery and ancient landscapes of Australia’s Top End. Back where it all began, year-round three, four and seven-night cruises introduce the very best of the Great Barrier Reef and tropical islands in total comfort and unmatched style.

HELEN WONG’S TOURS The vast Yangtze River offers the experience of a lifetime and one that Helen Wong’s Tours and Victoria Cruises is in the best position to provide. Construction of the massive Three Gorges Dam and the widening of the Yangtze through its rising water level has added another dimension to the Yangtze River cruise experience. It’s estimated that flooding will reach its maximum in 2009 with the resulting higher waters allowing vessels to reach previously inaccessible parts of the river system for exciting new sightseeing opportunities. Meanwhile, the sheer height of the mountain peaks and cliffs – from several hundred to 1000 metres – through the Three Gorges of Qutang, Wu and Xiling continues to provide travellers with an unforgettable cruise along one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. Helen Wong’s Tours have developed a number of exciting and varied itineraries based around this mighty river. All schedules include cruising aboard Victoria Cruises which offers multilingual Western cruise directors and trained local staff. Outside cabins have picture windows, lower berths and private bathrooms. Dining includes fine Chinese cuisine with Western selections. There are onboard lectures focusing on the local
history and culture, Tai Chi lessons, painting, calligraphy sessions and demonstrations and a full range of facilities including a business centre, bar, fitness centre and health clinic as well as live entertainment. Passengers can choose from a nine-day ‘Yangtze Downstream’ cruise that includes sightseeing excursions ashore, strolling the streets of quaint rural towns, browsing village shops, exploring ancient temples and experiencing up close the many points of cultural, historical and commercial interest unique to the Yangtze Regions. The ‘Shanghai to Shangri-la’ 22-day itinerary includes an extended cruise from Shanghai to Chongqing, with the opportunity to see some of China’s premier sites, cities and towering scenery in relaxing comfort. ‘Splendid Yangtze’ is a 25-day tour that starts with cosmopolitan flair. A kaleidoscope of beautiful gardens, waterways and scenic beauty follows as guests meet the minority nationalities of Yunnan and learn the historical significance of Xian and Beijing.

HERITAGE EXPEDITIONS After four years of careful planning, Heritage Expeditions ran its first and very successful series of Russian Far East cruises in 2007. A long association with the Russian Far East and chartering the Russian-registered vessel Prof Khromov (Spirit of Enderby) was integral to helping Heritage Expeditions obtain all the necessary permits to plan a unique series of cruises through the waters around the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka, the Koryiak and Chukhotka Regions. Despite the fact that this region dominates the North Pacific, very few people in a tourist capacity have had the opportunity to do more than visit its major cities. Because of the area’s strategic importance during the Cold War, it was declared a ‘closed area’ to Westerners for decades. Even today, some restrictions remain in place with special permits required for particular places. The expeditions offered by Heritage are only possible by ship. All of the itineraries combine a rich mixture of the abundant local culture. Superlatives such as ‘amazing’, ‘spectacular’
and ‘unique’ are woefully inadequate when describing the experiences that are enjoyed on these journeys. A maximum of 48 passengers and a choice of realistic itineraries ensure guests will spend quality time ashore in environments of the best available natural and cultural history. There are a number of destinations and departure dates to choose from. New Zealand or Russian-based staff can prepare all your travel arrangements including flights, accommodation and any pre- and post-tours. Invitation letters and expert advice on visas are also available. Heritage Expeditions is Australasia’s leading Expedition Travel organiser, with annual expeditions to the Subantarctic Islands of New Zealand and Macquarie Island, East Antarctica – including Mawson’s Hut – the Ross Sea and Western Pacific. PEREGRINE ADVENTURES Discover the amazing Galapagos Islands or journey to the ends of the Earth with the leaders in small group adventure travel. Peregrine Adventures invites travellers to embrace their spirit of adventure and head ‘off the beaten track’ on a Galapagos Islands expedition voyage. Here, you’ll discover one of the world’s best marine reserves in a small group and with an expert English-speaking naturalist. Guests of the Peregrine Endeavour spend as much time as possible on shore excursions, with impact on the environment minimised by the group size of no more than 16 like-minded travellers. You’ll see animal species in their natural habitats, including giant Galapagos tortoises, blue footed and masked boobies, land and marine iguanas, sea lions, whales and sea turtles. Because of their intimate knowledge of their homeland, the sights, culture and language, Peregrine’s Ecuadorian crew are also a highlight of this spectacular journey. You’ll learn so much more about your destination. Expedition voyages may also be combined with trips to mainland South America where the focus is on culture and history as well as trekking. Peregrine’s voyages to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, the Canadian
and Spitsbergen High Arctic are the ultimate in wilderness experiences. Antarctica is a magical world of giant icebergs, glimmering mountains and icy plains; and with expert guides, passengers discover wildlife populations in natural sanctuaries set amid magnificent scenery, while learning about the fascinating history of the region. Peregrine also journey to the Falklands, where black-browed albatross raise their chicks and to South Georgia where the king penguins and elephant seals line the shores. Among the High Arctic adventures, the Peregrine Mariner and Peregrine Voyager make their bid to traverse one of the world’s most elusive sea routes – the Northwest Passage – encountering polar bears along the way and, conditions permitting, hiking on the tundra to visit a remote community. Much of the time is spent off the ship exploring by Zodiac boats or through shore excursionsconditions permitting twice-daily. Sea kayaking, hiking and photography are other activities on these once-in-a-lifetime Polar voyages.

PONANT CRUISES Ponant Cruises is the premier French-flagged adventure cruise line. Marseilles-based La Compagnie des Iles du Ponant (Ponant Cruises) was founded in 1988 and is the premier French-flagged cruise line operating three vessels of remarkably different configuration. The flagship, Le Ponant, is an intimate and modern three-masted luxury sailing yacht. The sleek and futuristic Le Levant could be James Bond’s newest plaything, while the grande dame, Le Diamant, is a classic expedition vessel built for both comfort and the rigours of Arctic service.
At 8000 tonnes she carries 226 passengers to the far corners of the globe, including the Arctic, Antarctic, South America, British Isles and the Mediterranean. She will become one of the largest, most comfortable ships still able to conduct shore excursions in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters. Despite her French-flag status, she is well able to cater for English-speaking guests. Ponant currently has two new luxury expedition vessels under construction, due to enter service in 2010.

STAR FLYER Alluring Tahiti – nothing quite conjures up the spirit of romance like a cruise on the magnificent luxury sailing ship Star Flyer. The elegant clipper Star Flyer, with the ambience and facilities of a private yacht, is now based in Papeete year-round offering seven-, 10- and 11-night sailings to the most spectacular islands in French Polynesia, cruising through the Society Islands and the remote Tuamotus. Magical Moorea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa, Raiatea and Huahine – explorers Captain James Cook and Samuel Wallis – writers and artists Somerset Maugham, James Michener and Paul Gauguin – these are all part of the exotic, colour-saturated canvas of French Polynesia. The best way to see and experience it all is on a leisurely cruise on Star Flyer, a classically intimate ship of 115-metres long carrying a maximum of only 170 passengers and able to anchor in hidden
bays and coves inaccessible to larger traditional cruise ships. From the deck of the Star Flyer with a glass of champagne in hand as the giant sails unfold, the breathtaking colours of Tahiti’s lagoons, mist-shrouded mountains and pristine beaches offer an unique experience. Star Flyer is a true clipper ship with its theme of polished brass, teakwood and gleaming mahogany rails, combining the traditions and romance of the legendary era of sailing ships with the latest in high-tech navigation and passenger pampering. There’s a five-star dining room (smart casual dress and open seating), dishes created by a famous French chef, two swimming pools, a cocktail lounge, a library and tropical bar on deck.

STAR CLIPPERS Adventure cruising is in a class of its own aboard Star Clippers’ three luxury clipper ships. Year-round, the fleet’s 134-metre flagship Royal Clipper and 115-metre sister ships Star Flyer and Star Clipper carry adventure enthusiasts in style around the Caribbean, the French and Italian Rivieras, the Greek Isles, Croatian ports from Venice to Rome, and from Phuket to pristine islands in the Andaman Sea and Malaysian waters. The Star Flyer cruises the islands of French Polynesia. The replica clippers represent a dream come true for the owner, Swedish yachtsman Mikael Krafft, as they blend the romance and traditions of sailing with the luxury and space-age cruising technologies of a private yacht.
Passengers are pampered in an intimate, casual atmosphere with meals designed by a French Michelin chef. There is a cocktail lounge, tropical bar and a quiet retreat in the timber-lined library. Luxurious cabins feature marble-lined bathrooms, television, in-house video and directdial telephone. On deck, with a backdrop of billowing sails, there are two swimming pools and more space per passenger than on conventional super-liners. Passengers can haul ropes to set the sails and climb a mast to the crow’s nest to enjoy a bottle of champagne.

VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY From the Mediterranean to the ports of Africa, from Rio to Antarctica, Voyages of Discovery offer value-for-money soft adventure cruising. Cruise in classic comfort aboard Mv Discovery with around 660 fellow passengers and a team of highly acclaimed port lecturers and guest speakers who will add a rare insight into the places you visit. Built for global cruising, Discovery is large enough to sail the world’s great oceans, yet small enough to reach the places others leave aside. Behind her classic lines, the emphasis is on space, service and understated elegance with friendly, experienced British captains, European officers and an attentive Filipino crew. Discovery begins her European season in May, cruising to Norway, Iceland and the Faroes, and the Northern capitals where the Baltic cruises include at least two full days in St Petersburg. In September Discovery heads to the Mediterranean, to explore the Italian coast, Greece, the Black and Red Seas and some fascinating ports of North Africa including Alexandria, Valetta and Al Khums, Tripoli and Benghazi in Libya.
Discovery’s world season explores a wealth of diverse, faraway lands from Rio to one of the earth’s most unspoilt, yet fragile worlds – Antarctica. Guests make landings on the Antarctic Peninsula in the company of expert guides to learn about the whales and winged creatures that take shelter there. After exploring the Falkland Islands and the Chilean Fjords, Discovery continues to South Africa and the beautiful islands of the Indian Ocean including Mauritius, the Seychelles and the Maldives. From India it’s on to the Red Sea, where Discovery sails to the ports of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean before heading back to the UK. Passengers may extend their voyage by adding optional tours. Alternatively, Voyages of Discovery’s Grand Voyages allow passengers to link up consecutive itineraries, meaning the further you travel, the more you save.

Several types of massage therapy and other luxury treatments are offered, as well as a range of fitness and wellness programs available with the guidance of professional instructors. Kayaking and waterskiing from the ship’s sports platform satisfy
the more adventurous. Guests tour glamorous Riviera ports by day, while every night there’s a new menu to sample in the elegant restaurant or bistro, with plenty of entertainment and surprises to follow. Art and history lovers will appreciate the exotic blend of Moorish culture on the Rome-BarcelonaLisbon cruise during October when passengers will explore the sun-drenched Spanish islands of Minorca and Mallorca. Ibiza is serenely beautiful at this time of year, after the summer party crowds have left this cosmopolitan island. Take time in Barcelona to stroll along its elegant boulevards, enjoy the shopping or to marvel at the artworks of Picasso, Gaudí and Miró. At Malaga there are castles and forts to visit plus day trips to Granada or Cordoba. Exotic Tangier, once the haunt of writers and artists, is next. After a few leisurely days spent cruising the Algarve coast, you will arrive revitalised in Lisbon. The port of Amalfi in Italy
