2009 was clearly a tough year in travel - as evidenced by the annual report from industry lobby group The Tourism and Transport Forum. One of the line items in the TTF balance sheet shows “Wine on hand” valued at $18,509 as at 30 Jun last year. The figure for the previous corresponding year was $25,808, meaning that the TTF went through $7,299 worth of its wine stocks in 2008/09 - probably to ease the stress of the global financial crisis. A THREE year-old boy took an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Copenhagen Airport last weekend after hopping onto an unattended baggage belt while his mother checked in. Neither she nor airport staff noticed his departure, and the toddler travelled right through the automated system including a full X-ray, at which stage he was directed to an area for manual handling because he didn’t have a luggage tag. WHO said New York cab drivers aren’t helpful? A tourist from Italy is singing their praises after one of them returned more than US$21,000 she left in a purse in a Manhattan taxi on Christmas Eve. The cabbie drove about 80km to an address he found in the purse, and left a note with his phone number when he found nobody at home. He later returned with the money - and refused a reward.

The call comes after more than 1,000 cases of the illness were reported in the Limpopo province since the rainy season began. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES WITH

THE TRAVEL PROFESSIONALS

AFTA UPDATE the latest insights from AFTA’s Chief Executive, Jayson Westbury 2010 the year of the great return. They say, “We are back in business” and while it is only early days of this New Year, it would appear that the signs for growth and solid trading are being installed as we speak. 2010 will be a big year. I hope everyone enjoyed a break and some time with your family over Christmas. Welcome to 2010. We will have a federal election this year, maybe around August (my prediction), we will have a review into consumer protection in the travel industry, we will have the implementation of new industry laws which will have potentially profound impacts on the travel industry and we will have, we hope, a much better year than in 2009. Some would say that it would be near impossible to have a worse year, but stranger things have happened. For my money, we need to be positive about the year ahead. There are good strong signs for a return to more normal commercial conditions which will mean a return to corporate travel and pick up in leisure as the year unfolds. Already reports in have shown that the return of the earlybird late in 2009 had a positive impact on booking patterns and we hope that we can all build on this good start. Cruise is also reporting strong forward bookings so, as I said, the early signs for this year are much better than last. AFTA will also be having a very busy year in 2010. We will be working on the review into consumer protection and the submission for this process is well underway. AFTA has again retained KPMG to assist in the development of this document. We will also be launching a number of new initiatives for members and the broader industry and of course running the very successful National Travel Industry Awards (NTIA) in July of this year. Look out for all the details on this in Travel Daily, our official online daily news sponsor. There are also a number of other new things that will be released over the coming months including the new look and re-engineered AFTA webmail program which provides a valuable tool on new products to travel consultants. In all, 2010 is set to be bigger and much better than 2009 and I look forward to working with the industry on the road ahead.
