Community News Mixed use project planned for Thousand Oaks Blvd.

Oakmont Senior Living has received approval from the Moorpark City Council to build an assisted living center at 13960 Peach Hill Road. The building will be a two-story structure containing 70 single-bed units and 7 two-bed units and will feature amenities such as a library, a beauty salon, a movie theater, an outdoor pet park, a community garden, and a gym. This project represents the fourth attempt to develop the property, with past plans to build medical faciliites and a church on the land never coming to fruition. Oakmont currently operates 40 other facilities in the state of California and plans to expand to Oxnard, Camarillo, Agoura Hills, and Simi Valley in the coming months.

Developers have submitted plans to build an expansive residential and retail project on Thousand Oaks Blvd. The project calls for a low-rise development that includes 142 apartments and approximately 12,000 square feet of commercial space. Located at 299 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., the development will be situated just east of Moorpark Rd., on a 3.2 acre parcel currently occupied by a car dealer and an auto body shop. If approved, construction of the project would lead to the removal of 12 oak and 8 California black walnut trees, both of which are protected species. Accordingly, the developers would be required to replace the trees at a 3 to 1 ratio.

Westlake Village puma has died

Assisted living project approved in Moorpark

A local mountain lion named P-55 has died. The male puma, which was three years old, made waves in February when it invaded the backyard of a Westlake Village family and repeatedly charged at their glass backdoor. Among wildlife watchers, P-55 was also known for successfully crossing the 101 freeway at least twice. National Park Service officials indicate that P-55’s remains were too decomposed to determine a cause of death, but that rodenticide poisoning is a likely culprit. The NPS believes there are currently about 15 mountain lions living in the Santa Monica Mountains, including 4 kittens that were recently found in the Simi Hills.

Community News Local biotech startup sells drug portfolio

Ventura to open homeless shelter

Thousand Oaks-based startup AliveGen Inc. has sold their portfolio of drug candidates to the Massachusetts-based company Biogen in a deal that could be valued at $562 million. AliveGen will receive $27.5 million upfront with additional payouts following various development milestones. The portfolio includes two drugs that target myostatin, a naturally occurring protein that inhibits muscle growth. By restricting the myostatin pathway, the scientists hope to develop a treatment for people inflicted by muscular wasting diseases such as muscular dystrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The first AliveGen drug is currently in a Phase1a clinical trial, while the other drug is in a preclinical stage.

The Ventura City Council has approved plans to open a permanent homeless shelter at 2323 Knoll Drive. The shelter will be housed by an existing four-story building which is owned by the county and will be leased to the city. The shelter is expected to house 55 people on a regular basis, with room for additional people in the event of emergencies. The City of Ventura recently joined the county and the City of Oxnard in issuing a request for proposal for a third party operator to operate shelters in the two cities. Oxnard is expected to open a shelter that could house 100-150 people.
