Small lot homes planned for East Hollywood

Construction in the South Park area of downtown Los Angeles doesn’t appear to be letting up, with plans for a large hotel being announced recently. Located at 913 South Figueroa St., the project calls for a 73 story tower, holding 220 hotel rooms and 200 condos, as well as over 94,000 square feet of commercial space. The project will be built in the parking lot next door to the classic Hotel Figueroa, and if completed as planned, will be the 3rd tallest building in Los Angeles. Other hotel projects underway in the area include Hotel Indigo at Francisco and Eighth, and the Olympia complex located at Georgia and Olympic. Meanwhile, two 35-story apartment towers are being planned at 1200 S. Figueroa, adjacent to the Staples Center.

Plans have been filed with the City of Los Angeles to divide a plot of land near Barnsdall Park in order to build 21 small residences. The development would be located at 4773 Hollywood Blvd., where the Center for Inquiry is presently located. Few other details can be ascertained from the filed plans, aside from a request to build 36 foot structures, 6 feet higher than zoning currently allows. This project marks the second residential development planned for the area in recent months. A block west from the proposed subdivision is the Olive Hill project, which will feature 200 new apartments.

The building will feature both townhomes and apartments, with ammenties such as an outdoor pool and roof decks.

Bel Air mansion is most expensive residence for sale in U.S.

Eclipsing the previous record by $65 million, the most expensive residence ever listed in the United States is a 38,000 square foot mansion in Bel Air, currently available for $250 million. Built on a speculative basis by developer Bruce Makowsky, the megamansion includes 12 bedrooms, 21 bathrooms, 6 bars, and 3 kitchens. Perhaps resembling a museum more than a home, the property also includes 100 art installations and an “auto gallery with $30 million of rare cars. Makowsky previously made news by selling a spec mansion to Minecraft creater Markus Persson in 2014. According the The Hollywood Reporter, Makowsky believes that perhaps only 3,000 people in the world could afford to purchase the house.

Coachella pop-up Sumo Dog has brought its fancy hot dogs from Palm Springs to Koreatown, opening a small storefront. Hot dogs with Asian flavors is the main focus here. Their menu includes eight different hot dogs, which can be made with pork sausage, waygu beef or vegan. Their signature, the Sumo Dog, is topped with picked peppers, wasabi relish, spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, furikake, and seaweed. Their Bacon Bahn Mi comes wrapped in bacon, and then topped with shreds of daikon and carrot, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño, fish sauce, spicy mayo and lime. Sumo Dog also offers fries, tater tots, and tots made with sushi rice. For dessert, try their soy milk softserve, a creamy non-dairy treat. Sumo Dog is open until 10 p.m. Sunday – Wednesday, and until 2 a.m. Thursday – Saturday.

The Venue is a one-stop dining and singing spot with more than a dozen karaoke rooms. The dinner menu for the main dining room here includes items such as beets and goat cheese salad, yellowtail crudo, short ribs with horseradish cream, roasted chicken and steaks. For those heading straight to the private karaoke rooms, there’s a smaller bar food menu, which includes towering platters of chipotle maple chicken wings, beef sliders and fried mac and cheese. The drink menu here is fun and full of options, from fruity tikiinspired crushed ice-and-vodka drinks to spicy Serrano chili tequila concoctions and classic whiskey cocktails. The underground restaurant is open daily from 6 p.m. – 2 a.m.

If you’re looking for a new hidden bar/cocktail lounge, Birds & Bees is the place to be. The entrance to this 50s-themed bar is through a parking lot, along a fence, down a flight of stairs, and through an unmarked door. The 120-seat industrial-chic drinking hole is underground in Downtown LA. The drinks here are named after icons like Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day, bringing back the divas to life via the presumed style of cocktail they’d have drunk. You can also explore a realm of classics lost in time such as the Cloak & Dagger, which has aged rum, blackstrap rum, overproof rum, falernum, and lime. Birds & Bees is open Monday – Thursday from 5 p.m. – Midnight, Friday – Saturday from 5 p.m. – 2 a.m., and is closed on Sundays.
