Community News LGBT Center awarded grant for affordable housing The Los Angeles LGBT was recently awarded a $4.9 million grant from the City of Los Angeles to aid in the construction of their Anita May Rosenstein Campus in Hollywood. The funds are earmarked for affordable housing at the complex, including 100 units for seniors, 35 supportive housing units for younger people, and 100 beds for homeless young people. The campus will include administrative space as well as a commercial kitchen for providing meals for residents. Although the mission of the LGBT Center is to support the LGBT community of Los Angeles, the housing resources will be available to all Angelenos. The LGBT Center will be located at 1116 North McCadden Place, near Santa Monica Blvd. and Highland Ave. Construction is expected to be completed by early 2019.

Los Angeles Conservancy targets Television City Responding to reports that CBS has placed their Television City property on the market, the Los Angeles Conservancy recently submitted an application to have the studio lot designated as a historic cultural monument. Located at Fairfax Ave. and Beverly Blvd. in Hollywood, Television City originally opened in 1952 as has been the production home of iconic TV personalities like Ed Sullivan, Jack Benny, Carol Burnett, and Merv Griffin. Architecturally, the studio is an

example of the International Style and is considered a master work of midcentury modern architects Pereira and Luckman. Experts believe that the property could be sold for $500- 900 million. Conservancy advocates claim that any buyer would then want to expand the studio buildings by 200% to make the purchase a viable investment, therefore jeopardizing the historic value of the structures.

Michelin star pedigree coming to Beverly Center

Josh Skenes, the chef behind Saison, a three Michelin star restaurant in San Francisco, has announced plans to open a restaurant in the Beverly Center. Called Angler, the new venture will first open at a space in the Bay Area, before moving to L.A in the fall of 2018. As suggested by its name, Angler will focus on seafood, prepared in the same live fire style that Skenes used make Saison one of the world’s fifty best restaurants. Angler will feature live tanks of shellfish and fish and will have seats for 100 patrons, as well as fireplaces, a wine cellar, and a lounge with a full bar.

Community News Initiative would speed up Metro projects

companies to do a better job in reducing fire hazards near power lines. The new rules would require utilities to maintain clearances between power lines and vegetation in high-risk areas, which accounts for approximately 44% of California. The change in regulations follows allegations that the October fires in wine country, which killed 44 people, were caused by powerlines toppled by high winds. Over the years, several other fires have been attributed to the negligence of utility companies, leading to millions in civil fines and verdicts.

On the heels of Los Angeles being selected as the host for the 2028 Summer Olympics, the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority has announced a proposal to ramp up construction of several projects throughout the city. Dubbed “ Twenty- Eight by ’28,” the initiative would speed up the timelines for projects, such as expansion of Metro lines and redevelopment of the Washington/ Flower junction, to help prepare the city for hosting thousands of athletes and spectators from around the world.

Uber to bring flying taxis to Los Angeles

State passes new rules to prevent wildfires

With wildfires still raging in various parts of the state, California’s Public Utilities Commission recently adopted regulations requiring utility

Ride sharing pioneer Uber recently announced plans to bring a fly-ondemand rideshare service to the Los Angeles area by 2020. Named UberAir, the service would utilize electrical vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL’s) that would allow passengers to beat ground traffic by flying above it, travelling in four passenger vehicles that will take off and land at 20 rooftop bases around the city. With their proposed vehicles capable of flying 200 mph, the company estimates that a 1½ hour commute could be reduced to 30 minutes, for a cost similar to what would be charged by an UberX car for the same distance. Proponents of the project claim that short-distance aircraft will reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as offer customers a transportation option that will reduce time spent on the road.
