Community News New apartments proposed in Beverly Hills

In what would be the first large apartment building constructed in Beverly Hills in 30 years, developers are proposing to build a six story building at 9200 Wilshire Blvd., near Doheny Drive. If approved by city officials, the new structure would include 90 residential units of various sizes, with one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts. Plans call for an expansive building divided into two wings, with a striking glass exterior and a central courtyard. Approximately 5,700 square feet of ground floor retail space would be available, adding commercial space to an area that is primarily populated by single family residences and office buildings. The building would also include three levels of subterranean parking.

Coworking expanding in West Hollywood One of the hallmarks of the so-called “gig economy” has been the recent growth of coworking space.

Coworking startup WeWork has been a leader in the industry, with 212 locations operating in 52 cities, including 14 in the Los Angeles area. The most recent location will be at the Pacific Design Center at 8687 Melrose Ave., where they will occupy the entire 7th and 8th floors of the PDC’s RedBuilding, approximately 70,000 square feet of space. WeWork offers its members access to private and share offices and conference rooms, as well as communal work areas that feature high-speed internet service and unique networking opportunities.

Developments on Broadway include Michael Jordan store

The owners of the condo complex at 8500 Sunset Blvd. have modified their plans to comply with West Hollywood’s law prohibiting short-term residential leases. Korman Communities, which just recently acquired the upper floors of the building, had announced that they intended to offer extendedstay hotel units under their AKA banner. However, such an operation would be illegal under WeHo’s anti-Airbnb ordinance, which forbids residential stays of less than 31 days. Subsequently, Korman has indicated that instead they will split their operation into two models, offering both long-term apartment leases, and short-term hotel rentals over one month in duration.

Community News New apartments planned for Melrose

underway, as of July 2017. However, L.A.’s standing near the top of the leaderboard is a bit misleading, as Seattle is far-and-away the busiest city with 58 crane projects, and Toronto is tops on the continent with 81 projects. Other top U.S. cities include Denver (35 cranes), Chicago (34) and Portland, Oregon (32).

LA County to acquire combat helicopters to fight fires The border of Hollywood and Hancock Park will soon see a new development, if plans for the northeast corner of Highland and Melrose go through. Though few details have been made public, it is expected that the site, which until recently was home to a 76 gas station, will be built out to include a mixed-use building with a groundfloor restaurant and 19 upper-level apartments. The development is consistent with the zoning for the site, so no variance will be required.

LA second busiest city for commercial construction

If you thought there were an abundance of construction cranes on the horizon lately, you were right. A recent survey has concluded that Los Angeles has the second busiest city in the U.S. for commercial construction, with 36 projects

With Southern California in the midst of the summer wildfire season, officials are making longterm plans to shore up the county’s firefighting efforts. LA County’s Board of Supervisors recently approved an agreement to pay $29.4 million to lease two modified military helicopters for a ten year period. The Sikorsky S70i Black Hawk helicopters will have the capability to siphon up to 1,000 gallons of water and drop it on raging wildfires. LA County currently operates a fleet of eight multi-mission helicopters, but rampant wildfires in recent years caused the Supervisors to re-evaluate their program. Last year’s Sand Fire was particularly destructive, burning 41,000 acres and forcing 20,000 evacuations, during which the county’s two Super Scooper aircraft were unavailable.

Japanese Painting: A Walk in Nature May 13 - September 10, 2017

In honor of David Hockney’s 80th birthday, the Getty is exhibiting a two-part retrospective of his career, focusing on self-portrait paintings than span 65 years of his life, as well as photographs and Polaroid photocollages from the 1980’s.

In contrast with a western tradition that often depicts nature as a force to be feared or conquered, the pieces featured in this exhibit often depict the natural world as a place of tranquility. This exhibition includes 24 paintings created by Japanese artists of the 16th to 20th centuries, including work from the Maruyama, Rinpa, and Literati schools.
