Community News Cool pavement testing well in San Fernando Valley
Whole Foods 365 coming to North Hollywood
An experimental method for battling summer heat is already paying off for Valley residents. Residents in Canoga Park and Arleta report that a pilot program that covered their streets with new, reflective material is making sweltering summer heat much more bearable. CoolSeal is a gray colored coating that helps lower the temperature of street surfaces, therefore helping to lower the ambient temperature overall. Experts indicate that summer temperatures have risen an average of 10 degrees in the past century, largely due to the thousands of miles of asphalt that Angelenos now take for granted. Resurfacing streets with CoolSeal costs between $25,000 and $40,000 per mile and is expected to last five to seven years. City officials have documented significantly lower temperatures on cool pavement and residents are uniformly happy with the difference.
Following on the heels of an August store opening in Santa Monica, Whole Foods will be opening a location of their “365 franchise in North Hollywood in the near future. A lower cost offshoot of the popular organic grocery store, Whole Foods 365 is a relatively new concept having only opened its first location in Silverlake in May 2016. The 365 stores are typically smaller and aimed at Millennial shoppers, but still hold true to the Whole Foods ethic of providing natural, organic foods from local sources. The NoHo store will be located at the corner of Lankershim Boulevard and Otsego Street, and is expected to open in late 2017, or early 2018.
Community News Hotel planned for downtown Glendale
A new Spanish Colonial Revival style hotel is being planned for the Brand Blvd. area of Glendale. Tentatively named Hotel Louise, the project will be located at the corner of Wilson Ave. and Louise St., a space currently occupied by a parking lot. The hotel will be a six-story building comprised of 147 guest rooms, conference space, and a pool deck. The project will be built by R.D. Olson Development, the company responsible for several hotels throughout the Los Angeles area, including
an art deco tower on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood and an AC Marriott in the Miracle Mile.
LA County acquiring combat helicopters to fight fires
With Southern California in the midst of the summer wildfire season, officials are making longterm plans to shore up the county’s firefighting efforts. LA County’s Board of Supervisors recently approved an agreement to pay $29.4 million to lease two modified military helicopters for a ten year period. The Sikorsky S70i Black Hawk helicopters will have the capability to siphon up to 1,000 gallons of water and dropping it on wildfires that would otherwise be difficult to reach. LA County currently operates a fleet of eight multimission helicopters but rampant wildfires in recent years caused the Supervisors to reevaluate their program. Last year’s Sand Fire was particularly destructive, burning 41,000 acres and forcing 20,000 evacuations, when fire erupted in Santa Clarita’s Sand Canyon when the County’s two Super Scooper aircraft were unavailable.

The Butterfly Pavilion is a seasonal exhibit that showcases hundreds of butterflies and the natural environs where they thrive. Among the butterflies at the museum are subtropical species such as the malachite and the grey cracker, as well as native butterflies such as monarchs, mourning cloaks, and buckeyes. Timed tickets are required for admission to the Butterfly Pavilion, and are available for advance purchase on the NHM website.
Galka Scheyer was an influential art dealer of the first half of the 20th century, responsible for introducing many to the art of Lyonel Feininger, Alexei Jawlensky, Paul Klee and Vasily Kandinsky. This exhibit represents a selection of Scheyer’s personal collection that also includes pieces by László Moholy-Nagy, Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera.
In contrast with a western tradition that often depicts nature as a force to be feared or conquered, the pieces featured in this exhibit often depict the natural world as a place of tranquility. This exhibition includes 24 paintings created by Japanese artists of the 16th to 20th centuries, including work from the Maruyama, Rinpa, and Literati schools.
