Community News Construction underway at NoHo West complex

Aerojet moving 100 jobs to Chatsworth

Developers recently broke ground on the new retail and residential project NoHo West, which will be located at 6150 Laurel Canyon Blvd., adjacent to the 170 freeway. Announced in April 2015, the development will convert an existing Macy’s store into commercial office space and add over 190,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space situated around a newly constructed street through the property. The residential areas are expected to include 742 units in low-rise buildings and parking garages for 1,312 vehicles. The developers plan to utilize open, public spaces to a unique livework environment that will be an attractive retail destination for the community. Construction is expected to be completed by mid 2019.

As part of their ongoing efforts to streamline operations, Aerojet recently announced that they will be transferring 100 of the company’s jobs to their Chatsworth location. Aerojet indicates they will be moving their Sacramento-based defense support programs to a new facility in Huntsville, Alabama, with many of the other Sacramento programs and positions to move to their location on DeSoto Ave. The move is expected to be completed by 2021, and save the company $230 million annually. The Chatsworth

facility is responsible for producing rocket engines, missile systems, and satellite thrusters, and employs over 1,000 workers.

Netflix moving more production to the Valley

Netflix, the growing streaming entertainment giant, recently announced that they will be moving $6 billion of production to studios and locations in the Los Angeles area. Originally reported by TheWrap,

the move is a reflection of efforts by the state and local governments to lure back entertainment business with tax incentives and streamlined permits. Netflix officials indicate that the company prefers to keep production in Southern California in order to minimize stress on local talent that would otherwise be forced to live elsewhere for months on end. The current slate of Netflix productions includes episodic shows such as “Disjointed” staring Kathy Bates, and “The Ranch” staring Ashton Kutcher, that are already shot at the Warner Bros. studio in Burbank.

New mixed-use project planned for Northridge

The intersection of Nordhoff St. and Darby Ave. will soon be home to a new residential and commercial complex. The building will be five stories tall and feature 146 apartments of various sizes, as well as amenities such as a fitness center, an event room, and a courtyard. On the ground floor, 2,000 square feet of retail space will likely house a coffee shop or retail store that could cater to the staff and students of nearby Cal State Northridge. The project also includes plans for subterranean parking for 222 vehicles. An existing single family residence and small commercial building will be razed to make way for the new construction.

Maven of Modernism: Galka Scheyer in California April 7 - September 25, 2017

The Butterfly Pavilion is a seasonal exhibit that showcases hundreds of butterflies and the natural environs where they thrive. Among the butterflies at the museum are subtropical species such as the malachite and the grey cracker, as well as native butterflies such as monarchs, mourning cloaks, and buckeyes. Timed tickets are required for admission to the Butterfly Pavilion, and are available for advance purchase on the NHM website.

Mastry represents a retrospective of the 35 year career of noted figurative painter Kerry James Marshall. Marshall, who was born in Alabama and grew up in South Central LA, is one of the few African American painters to find mainstream success and this exhibition of 80 paintings demonstrates both the progression of his career and the history of the community that he depicts.
