Community News Westfield Topanga to Redevelop Former Sears Building as Entertainment District

discovered why the sun’s magnetic waves strengthen and grow as they emerge from its surface. It was discovered that the wave amplification process can be attributed to the formation of an acoustic resonator where changes in temperature between the surface of the sun and its outer corona create boundaries. These boundaries act to trap the waves allowing them to intensify and grow in strength.

Valley Clinics Participate in Providence Training Program Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield announced that it will transform a former Sears building into a new dining and entertainment district at its Westfield Topanga & The Village shopping center in Woodland Hills. The redevelopment, with an estimated cost of $250 million, will include a grand entryway, restaurants and food offerings, entertainment venues, retail boutiques and public spaces, according to the retail center developer. Westfield will begin work this month on the overhaul of a long-dormant 160,000-square-foot former Sears department store. Shops and restaurants are expected to remain open for business throughout the construction process.

Community News San Fernando Program Teaches Students the Art of Mariachi Sergio Alonzo is a Grammy Award-winning member of Mariachi Los Camperos and now teaches young students the art of Mairachi. He says initially, the mariachi master apprentice program was an experiment, a way to develop the talent that already existed in the community. After a while, the program started to evolve. Now there are three different groups; beginners, intermediate, and the advanced group. Along with being ambassadors to mariachi music, these students are also learning to skills to help them succeed in life, like building a strong work ethic and dedication.

Glendale Officials Take Steps to Foster Local Tech Economy Glendale officials are moving forward with plans to launch a local tech accelerator intended to help grow regional startups with a $1 million state grant by the end of the year. Currently, the city is seeking an operator to run the accelerator that would offer

mentoring, networking, marketing assistance, investment opportunities and other services to earlystage tech companies seeking to progress to the “next level,” according to Jennifer Hiramoto, Glendale’s deputy director of community development. Glendale might not be considered a tech hotbed on par with San Francisco’s Silicon Valley or Santa Monica’s Silicon Beach, but its tech and startup ecosystems have grown in the last four years, according to Cecila Estolano, chief executive of Estolano Advisors.

Co-organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art, Julie Mehretu is a mid-career survey that will unite nearly 40 works on paper with 35 paintings dating from 1996 to the present by Julie Mehretu (b. 1970, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). The first-ever comprehensive retrospective of Mehretu’s career, covers over two decades of her examination of history, colonialism, capitalism, geopolitics, war, diaspora, and displacement through the artistic strategies of abstraction, architecture, landscape, movement, and, most recently, figuration.

Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy explores cult classic films and stories that have envisioned fantastic futuristic worlds, technologies, characters and cars. Through props, design drawings and physical vehicle models, this exhibit brings pop culture’s visions of dystopian, utopian, and science fiction worlds to life.

Once a simple wooden box with a primitive lens and cap for controlling light, the camera has undergone enormous change since its invention in the early nineteenth century. This display explores the evolution of the camera through a selection of historic cameras and photographs.
