Community News Developers plan second development on Santa Monica Blvd.
LA-based firm CIM Group is planning a new mixeduse complex in West Los Angeles, adjacent to a similar project they began building last year. The new project, located on Santa Monica Blvd. between Stoner and Granville Avenues, will be a five-story structure containing 154 residential units, 6,000 square feet of restaurant space, 9,000 square feet of retail space, and two levels of underground parking. The earlier project, which broke ground in February 2016, occupies a 1.3 acre parcel next door and includes 147 residences, and 40,000 square feet of commercial space. The two lots were previously occupied by car dealerships owned by Buerge Motor Car Company, which closed in early 2014. Although no time frames have been announced for the dual projects, they are certain to change the character of the neighborhood once completed.
Commercial project under construction in Playa Vista
The demand for office space in the Silicon Beach area appears to be spurring the development of a new commercial project in Playa Vista, at the corner of Centinela and Mesmer. Dubbed Kor-Ten, the development will provide approximately 11,600 square feet of office space on a lot that has been vacant for decades. According to the developers, the project will utilize environmentally sustainable methods and cater to the creative office needs of the media and technology companies that have lately made their homes on the westside. The building will stand four stories tall and will include ground floor restaurant and parking space, as well as a terrace and patio offering 1500 square feet of outdoor space.
Community News New restaurant planned for Bistro space
The restauranteurs behind Capo, the modern Italian establishment on Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica, have announced plans to open a new restaurant at the site of the former Bistro of Santa Monica. Named Red Rooster, the eatery will follow in the footsteps of the business-facing bakery of the same name, but will serve customers in a more formal sitdown environment. The style of the restaurant is expected to utilize the open warehouse feel of the space and focus on shared plates and communal seating with a menu that emphasizes grilled meats and wine by the glass. The new Red Rooster will be located at 2301 Santa Monica Blvd. and is expected to open in the summer of 2017.
New apartment projects now underway in Marina del Rey
After 53 years of government-imposed travel restrictions, Angelenos can now book direct flights from LAX to Havana, Cuba. American travelers had been banned from travelling to Cuba since 1963, but following the thawing of relations between the U.S. and Cuba in 2014, restrictions have gradually been lessened. Federal officials began approving commercial airline service in July 2015, and now Alaska Airline is offering regular direct flights between Los Angeles and Havana. While Cuba has remained an attractive, but unattainable vacation destination since the Cuban Missile Crisis, the true demand for such flights remains to be seen; American Airlines, which was already flying to Havana from other cities, has already announced plans to scale back their flights. Travelers will be pleased, however, to learn that, as of this writing, fares are as low as $318, reflecting Cuba’s location just 90 miles from Key West.
