A LET TER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
We are delighted to share this Annual Report with you. On behalf of the school, I thank each individual who has donated their time, care, and financial support to make RSS a strong, vibrant community of learners. I was privileged to spend the 2016-17 school year listening, learning, and leading alongside Jerry Katz. Getting to know the many people who make this community so special allowed me to deepen my understanding of the incredible school I now have the opportunity to lead. So many have given so much to help RSS get to where we are today. Thanks to your help, our students can learn and grow in an outstanding educational environment built on a bedrock of Jewish values and traditions. I came here because I understood that Rodeph Sholom School was like no other independent school in the country. As the only Reform Jewish independent school in the region, and one of only 12 in all of North America, we graduate outstanding leaders ready to make a true impact in their communities. We begin this 2017-18 school year with forward momentum. We embark on a self-study for our New York State Association of Independent Schools decennial reaccreditation. This study will enable us to identify our greatest strengths and determine our strategic priorities for the next stage of institutional growth. We already know that this next phase will require additional resources. Through both annual and capital giving, we will ask all generations of our community to help us attain the heights that we are so well positioned to reach. Current and future generations of students deserve this investment. Thank you again for your support! Sincerely,
Danny Karpf P’23, ’26 Head of School 3

It is my privilege to be concluding my first year as Chair of the Board of Directors of Rodeph Sholom School. My family has been a part of RSS for nearly 20 years, starting in 1998 when my son was two years old. I am now at the halfway point of my fourth child’s journey through the school. Looking through my very long lens, I see that we are both an institution of constants and an institution in the midst of change and transformation.
A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Our connection with Congregation Rodeph Sholom and our ability to combine Jewish life and learning with academic excellence are constants. RSS academics are both serious and mindful of the Reform Judaism which stands at our core. Taken together, these strengths allow us to produce students poised to face the challenges of our world. Community and relationships are also constants of RSS life. At nursery school orientation, parents are instructed to “Look to your left. Look to your right. You are looking at people who will be your friends for the rest of your life. Look to the front of the room. There you see the faculty and administrators committed to creating an experience your child will carry through the rest of their lives.” For my family, and for so many families, this building of community is a joyous constant of RSS. Yet, we also find ourselves in a moment of change. In June, Jerry Katz concluded his outstanding four years as Head of School, leaving us with a more professional, solid base on which to build. His legacy of faculty development, division consolidation and growth in our development efforts will remain with RSS for years. He was also instrumental in working with the Board of Directors to recruit and mentor Danny Karpf, our new Head of School. As Danny has noted, this unique past year has prepared him to take the helm with enormous confidence and knowledge. The Board of Directors, and everyone who comes into contact with Danny, is excited to see how far his energy, wisdom, warmth, intelligence and humor will take us. Both the constants and the changes would be impossible without the generosity of our parents and wider community. Your support of the Annual Fund, year after year, provides critical means for our school to continue doing what it does best and to change and adapt for the future. I wish to thank each and every person listed in this Annual Report, both for your gifts to the school and for entrusting us with your children. Sincerely,
Suzanne Waltman P’10, ’12, ’13, ’22 Chair of the Board of Directors

EACH UNDER THEIR OWN ROOF It was a busy summer of construction, relocation and renovation at the Rodeph Sholom School buildings. For the first time in RSS history, the 2017-18 school year opened with children in each division learning, growing and playing together under one roof. All Early Childhood students now occupy classrooms in the 84th Street building while 1st through 8th Grades fill the 79th and 78th Street campus. Bringing together students within each division provides opportunities for increased leadership and mentoring, full-time support from division heads and expanded learning resources for everyone.
10
The excitement surrounding this initiative was palpable as early as Spring 2017 when 4th Graders gave tours of the 79th Street building to rising 1st Graders. As the senior members of the Elementary Division, the 4th Grade leaders proudly escorted the wide-eyed, five-and six-year-olds through the building they would soon call their own. 1st Graders now enjoy PE classes in a larger gym, access to a science lab, an expanded collection of library books, and an enhanced music room, as well as increased opportunities to learn from older students. It is this chance for student collaboration across the grades that most excites Elementary Division Head Colleen Dundon: “Students will have new opportunities to support and mentor younger students—in much the same way you learn in a large family.”
SECTION NAME
Elementary Division students were not the only children excited to start the school year learning alongside their peers in a new building. Our youngest students, Twos and Threes, started the school year in the same building alongside Pre-K and Kindergarten students at our 84th Street campus. All Early Childhood students will enjoy a recently renovated library, a double-height indoor gymnasium, and a beautiful new art studio. While students are happy with their new classrooms, they are even more excited about the construction that was completed outdoors. One of the school’s most highly anticipated construction projects was revealed to very enthusiastic students in September: renovated outdoor play spaces for all Elementary and
Middle School students. As part of the division unification initiative, students in each division now enjoy designated outdoor play spaces designed specifically for age-appropriate growth and development. The renovated Elementary Play Deck and the brand new Middle School Sky Deck feature equipment built to enhance gross motor development and foster cooperative play. Learning through play has always been an important component of the curriculum, and these additional spaces have made it even more fun and stimulating. Division unification and fabulous new outdoor spaces are just some of the many reasons why the 2017-18 school year is a time of continued growth, new opportunities, and exciting changes at Rodeph Sholom School.

ALUMNI BASH
On June 12, alumni, parents of alumni and former faculty returned to campus for the first ever Alumni Bash. The event was a wonderful way for alumni families to reunite and welcome our new Head of School, Danny Karpf. As the first Head to have children enrolled at RSS, Mr. Karpf is uniquely invested in the future of our school, a point he discussed during the evening: “The world we are all living in today, more than ever, calls forth our mission to develop young people who see it as an imperative to make a difference, to be agents of change toward greater equality and justice in the world, to have Tikkun Olam at the center of their values. As the only Reform Jewish independent school in the region, and one of only 12 in all of North America, we have a unique opportunity to graduate outstanding leaders ready to make a true impact in their communities. With 47 years of graduates, our alumni body is robust. As the program grows, we look forward to continuing the development of programs and events, such as the Alumni Bash, and to welcome former families back home. As Mr. Karpf begins his tenure, he is eager to get to know RSS families past and present, and to connect with them in the months and years ahead.

The Alumni Bash was such a special experience. I’m lucky enough to see my classmates regularly so the true excitement of the event was getting to see my teachers. These people were so important in my childhood, it was amazing to see them all these years later! I really look forward to future reunions.

With 38 years of collective parenting among the four Annual Fund Co-Chairs, we know firsthand that Rodeph Sholom School students are exceptionally well prepared for their futures. Seminal RSS experiences such as the STEM Expo, Arts Festival, B’nai Mitzvah Philanthropy Project, D’var Torah presentations, Midrash Hour, Middle School Musical, and Israel trip, among many others, are formative for our children as well as our families. Being a part of this community allows us to live our Jewish values, every day. These experiences are made possible thanks to your support of the Annual Fund; a demonstration of our collective dedication to the mission of Rodeph Sholom School and the measureable impact of a Reform Jewish education. We support RSS because we believe in the importance of teaching our children Tikkun Olam, and because we are very proud of who our children have become.
A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
This year, thanks to the work of Annual Fund Co-Chairs Karen Benett, Justin Koplin, Sherri Lender and many Annual Fund volunteers, we achieved a remarkable 100% participation for the 8th Grade Class Gift and 92% parent participation overall. This Report of Gifts is a reflection of the tremendous strength of our community, and we thank you. We hope you will join us in the important work of supporting RSS again this academic year on behalf of our children. Thank you again for your support. Gratefully,
Natalie Silverstein P’15, ’17, ’22 Member, Board of Directors, Chair of the Development Committee and Annual Fund Co-Chair

“As proud grandparents of three children attending RSS, and a fourth getting ready to begin, we happily contribute to the RSS Annual Fund. The quality education they are receiving, in a beautiful facility, with a very talented and dedicated staff, is apparent in the way we see each grandchild develop, learn and thrive. RSS instills a love of Judaism and incorporates the teaching of Jewish values within the curriculum which makes this a unique school. We are proud to do our part by contributing to the annual fund each year.” SANDY AND KEN GREENBAUM GP’22, ’25, ’27

“I am a supporter of Rodeph Sholom School for many reasons. As a professor at the University of Chicago, I know firsthand that no private institution can make ends meet on tuition alone. To provide extra-curricular programming, differentiation, and scholarships, it is necessary to have income from other sources, primarily from donations and endowments. If the alumni, parents, and grandparents don’t donate then who will? I am thrilled that my granddaughters are enrolled at RSS and I have seen the joy they have for learning; their excitement to go to school each day; and the wonderful friends they have made. That is not only a reflection of the quality of the people who teach and work at RSS, but of the leadership and caring community that are part of RSS. It is my belief that there is no better investment than in our grandchildren’s education.” ELLEN RUDNICK GP’25, ’28
