A LET TER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
We are delighted to share this Annual Report with you. On behalf of the school, I would like to thank each individual who contributed their time, care, and financial support in 2017-18 to make Rodeph Sholom School as strong as it can possibly be. We accomplished so much together last year, and we have begun the 2018-19 school year with momentum and excitement. Following a year of institutional reflection, we are committed to a collective growth mindset, simultaneously making each day great for our students while building for the future. From enhancing the distinctive Jewish life and learning present in our school to transitioning to an exciting new elementary math resource this year, our program only continues to strengthen. We can provide the best for our students thanks to the generous support so many have provided. Every gift matters and shows the care you feel for the school. Beyond the essential culture of participation, the lead investments recognized in this report will have impact decades into the future. By supporting RSS, you are helping us send self-confident and socially responsible leaders out into the world to pursue peace and make the world a better place. We see this when our students raise their collective voices in response to issues in the news, when they support organizations through the Philanthropic Initiative in 7th Grade, and in how they treat one another on a daily basis. Rodeph Sholom School is unique, providing challenging academics while integrating powerful Jewish traditions and values in a supportive Nursery through 8th Grade setting. As a current RSS parent and as an educator, I am grateful for everyone who built RSS to be the place it is today—and for all of you who bring your heart and mind into our world each day. Whether you are part of our daily work together or you support RSS from a distance as alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, or friends, you help create this special, caring community. Thank you again for your support! Sincerely,
Danny Karpf Head of School

ANNUAL FUND
The 2017-18 school year provided frequent reminders of why I value a Jewish education for my children. RSS often feels like a sanctuary to me, a place of kindness and sanity where we are working to produce citizens who can improve the complicated world they are being handed. We are not only teaching our children about Judaism, we are teaching them how to act and engage in the world as Jews. Doing so as a community is far more impactful and energizing then trying to do the same work on our own.
A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Providing a Jewish education is playing the long game. Many of you know that I have three college-aged children as well as a 5th grader. When I see how my older kids, and their RSS friends, incorporate the value of tikkun olam into their lives and professional ambitions, I feel optimistic and recommitted to the work we are doing at RSS. Whether studying environmental issues, pursuing careers in education, or thoughtfully grappling with issues in the Middle East, I regularly see our graduates put the education they received at RSS to good and consistent use. They not only feel an ethical responsibility to address the issues they see in the world, but equally important, they feel prepared to take action. We are extraordinarily lucky to have Danny Karpf as our Head of School. Danny has a unique ability to connect with children, faculty, and parents. He forms meaningful relationships, which in turn encourages members of the community to reach out and do the same. It is these relationships that make our community thrive. We celebrated many tangible accomplishments last year, such as the hiring of a new Head of Middle School, the opening of the 79th Street Skydeck, and the reunification of the Elementary and Early Childhood Divisions. I believe that the strength of Danny’s leadership will come from the community he is building as much as the concrete accomplishments he is achieving. I thank each of you for making Rodeph Sholom School a priority. Everyone who has given to the Annual Fund has also contributed to the strength of our community and the important work we are doing. In looking forward to the 2018-19 academic year, I hope you will join me and continue to support RSS as it educates our future Jewish leaders. Sincerely,
Suzanne Waltman P’10, ’12, ’13, ’22 Chair of the Board of Directors

THE
YEAR
SEPTEMBER
On the first day of school, elementary students could be heard cheering, seen catching balls, and chatting about the newly opened play deck. The space features basketball hoops, climbing equipment, a chalkboard, open space to foster cooperative play, and Imagination Playground blocks.
To kick off another great school year, over 400 current parents gathered to Celebrate RSS! Joined by faculty and staff, parents mingled and caught up after many summer months apart. Parents heard from Head of School Danny Karpf about all the wonderful plans for the year ahead and enjoyed a short film featuring RSS students.

OCTOBER
In response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria, the RSS community collected food, toiletries, cleaning products, diapers, first aid kits, and more. In just four days the Parents Association, faculty, and staff had gathered, packed, and shipped 48 boxes of supplies for the relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
The Class of 2018 led an all-school Kabbalat Shabbat with N-8 students and families. The energy in the room was palpable when the 8th Grade students led the entire school in “Bim Bom” as everybody, even our new Twos students, was familiar with the catchy tune. NOVEMBER
Students and teachers in 2nd Grade welcomed grandparents and special friends to RSS. Excited visitors were led on classroom tours by students, were interviewed about their own 2nd Grade experience, played math games, and wrote Shabbat cards to U.S. Jewish soldiers. The morning concluded with a brunch for all and a performance by the 2nd Grade students.
On November 7, beloved children’s author and storyteller Joseph Bruchac visited RSS. Mr. Bruchac captivated elementary students with his music and stories, which focus on Native American and Anglo-American lives and folklore.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) visited the Middle School Thanksgiving Assembly. Leading up to the visit, each grade worked on separate projects regarding the global refugee crisis. At the assembly, students shared their project findings and heard from a member of the IRC team about the refugee crisis.
Chess at RSS continues its tradition of hosting intramural chess tournaments during the school year to introduce RSS players to the rigors and excitement of competitive chess. In December a group of RSS students traveled to Orlando to compete in the National Scholastic K-12 Grade Championships. JANUARY
The Class of 2017 reunited at Serafina. Nearly every member of the graduating class attended the event, where they reminisced and checked in with each other about how their freshman year in high school had begun. DECEMBER
8th graders visited Public School 67 in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, working alongside the Partnership With Children, which provides traumainformed counseling, schoolwide services, and family and community outreach in New York City public schools. Our students read, played sports and educational games, and did crafts with K-5 students. While connecting with these children, 8th graders had an opportunity to examine education and opportunity gaps that are prevalent in New York City’s public schools.
RSS parents and students attended a menorah lighting service at the New Jewish Home. The joyful sound of Chanukah songs and blessings could be heard throughout the building. Residents were thrilled to hear their favorite tunes and enjoyed visiting with RSS families.
Before the first snowfall, middle school students celebrated the opening of the new Skydeck, which is housed on the 79th Street side of the school. 5th to 8th graders are loving their new outdoor space, while playing basketball, soccer, and chatting with their friends in the “hideout.”
Mischa Rothko ’10 spoke to a 6th Grade science class about different fields of engineering. Mischa studied mechanical engineering and worked at the naval research lab on nuclear submarines in Washington, D.C., last summer. He shared stories with the students and had them participate in problem-solving activities.
FEBRUARY
Organized by the Parents Association, the 14th Annual Ice Skating Party was the most well-attended to date. Parents, students, and faculty skated their way around the Chelsea Piers Sky Rink and had fun high-fiving our school mascot.
New York Times best-selling author and clinical psychologist Dr. Wendy Mogel gave a dynamic and timely lecture on parenting to 150 RSS community members. Parents in the audience nodded and laughed throughout the evening as Dr. Mogel touched on critical and familiar topics such as active listening, the influence of technology, and letting kids be kids!
The RSS 5th Grade girls’ basketball team had a thrilling victory against The School at Columbia University in their first season as middle school students. Each team sank impossible shots as the clock ticked down to the final seconds. RSS put up their final shot at the sound of the buzzer, and cheers erupted on the court and in the stands as the ball swooshed through the net.

While studying the art of Jackson Pollock, Pre-K students discovered they could create paintings bigger than themselves without even touching a paintbrush to paper. Students used items such as soap bottles, brushes, and popsicle sticks to create splashes, dots, and moving lines in a large Pollockinspired painting. MARCH
RSS families spent a Sunday afternoon at the Food Bank for New York City, unpacking and sorting pallets of food for delivery to distribution centers. Volunteers packed enough food for 4,123 meals.
Over 100 Parents of Alumni from multiple decades reunited with each other and RSS faculty at the Parents of Alumni Cocktail Party. Parents reminisced and reflected on their children’s formative years and subsequent journeys. Many specifically attributed their children’s successes, strong Jewish identities, and social conscience to their time spent at RSS. 6
RSS was proud to have joined schools across the country to honor the victims of the Parkland tragedy on National Walkout Day. Middle school students walked in silence from the 79th Street campus to Congregation Rodeph Sholom, where they heard from their student representatives. Amanda Bosses ’16 is an accomplished diver who spoke about the “Geometry of Diving” to an RSS 4th Grade Learning Center math class. She emphasized angles and the calculations that go into making a perfect dive. APRIL APRIL
RSS Family Service Day had a phenomenal turnout for Earth Day! Students, parents, and faculty packed over 400 school backpacks for Good+ Foundation, 320 bags of soccer gear for the Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation, made an Earth Day-themed art mural for the New Jewish Home, and baked cookies for CRS’s Homeless Shelter.
On Yom HaShoah, 7th and 8th graders had the privilege of hearing Hannah Deutch speak about her experiences during the Holocaust. The students were captivated and emotional hearing about her journey on one of the last trains through Kindertransport, and understood that firsthand accounts like these are becoming increasingly rare. Cheryl Fricchone, RSS Math Specialist, and Valerie Klein, Assistant Clinical Professor and Program Director in Mathematics Learning at Drexel University, led an RSS Spring Math Night for parents. Dr. Klein discussed current research about best math practices that support student learning, and Coach Cheryl demonstrated Bridges in Mathematics, RSS’s new K-4 math program.

MAY
To show their gratitude during Teacher Appreciation Week, students and parents wrote heartfelt notes to every RSS faculty and staff member. The Parents Association delivered the notes and also provided teachers with a coffee bar, chair massages, and a breakfast buffet! Grandparents joined Kindergarten students and parents on a field trip to the North Woods in Central Park. While walking by the pond and along the Loch and Ravine, they saw many beautiful waterfalls, blooming flowers, and wildlife. Everyone was thrilled to visit and learn about this hidden gem in Central Park.
The RSS Arts Festival celebrated 10 years! The evening was a chance for students to showcase their creativity and varied accomplishments in the arts. Visual and digital arts were displayed throughout the 79th Street campus, while live musical, drama, and dance performances entertained RSS families.
JUNE
Threes students enjoyed learning about the life cycle of butterflies as they watched the process of metamorphosis occur right before their eyes! After the caterpillars formed their chrysalises and became butterflies, the students let them spread their wings and fly to their new home, Central Park.
On a trip to Washington, D.C., 6th Grade students worked with the Youth Service Opportunities Project to help the homeless. Students picked and cleaned vegetables, sorted linens and books, and made beds and served meals to the homeless in our nation’s capital.
4th graders presented their original poetry to family and friends. The poetry was creative, thoughtful, and uniquely their own. This tradition is the culmination of the 4th graders’ experiences in the Elementary Division.
On day three of their trip to Israel, the Class of 2018 spent an evening camping out at the base of Masada and then took a morning hike up to the ancient fortress. Students were able to appreciate the beauty of sunrise over the Dead Sea and Jordanian mountains and then retraced the footsteps of the last holdouts against the Roman army, amid the ruins of Masada.
7th graders explored Tennessee and spent time talking to a former KKK member who has become an advocate for anti-racism. Students learned what his life was like and how he broke free of his former ideologies. Our students took advantage of this rare opportunity to have a candid dialogue with someone whose past differs dramatically from their own.

PURPOSE-DRIVEN
LIVES
THE RSS COMMUNITY MAKING A DIFFERENCE
At Rodeph Sholom School, we take pride in our unique curriculum that not only prepares students to succeed academically, but also builds character and inspires them to pursue meaning in their lives. “An RSS education is not just about what you have learned, but about who you want to be,” says Head of School Danny Karpf. “Our hope is that our students will choose to pursue lives that are guided by their values, that are driven by their passions, and that are infused with an overall feeling of fulfillment.” Through our comprehensive service learning program and our focus on core Reform Jewish values, students learn how to live socially responsible lives. “It’s not enough to just feel purpose within yourself, because then it becomes something that’s only about you,” adds Rabbi Benjamin Spratt, Associate Rabbi of Congregation Rodeph Sholom. “A purpose-driven life becomes meaningful when it knits you together with others and lifts the world up around you.”
8
MORAL FOUNDATIONS
From the earliest ages, RSS students discuss the importance of looking outside themselves and standing up for their beliefs. Our early childhood students learn that the word tzedakah—often loosely translated as “charity”— comes from the Hebrew word tzedek, which means "justice"; we help others in order to make the world a fairer place. “In Kindergarten, we devote a lot of time to talking about community, and what it means to be a member of a community” says Naomi Saposh, a Kindergarten teacher who has taught at RSS for 10 years. “Our students have weekly jobs to do in the classroom, but we always reinforce the idea that if there’s a piece of paper on the floor, you pick it up, even if it’s not ’your job,’” she says. In this way, the classroom is a microcosm to the world at large—where there is work to be done, we don’t wait for others to do it. In the Early Childhood Division, RSS students visit the CRS Homeless Shelter to gain a deeper understanding of the people in their own neighborhood who might need support. Rabbi Spratt explains, “We’ve had kindergarteners
talk to their parents and propel their families to volunteer in the shelter. For someone so young to have the capacity to think about an experience beyond themselves is a moving reminder of what grows out of that. If that’s what they are thinking when they are 5 years old, then how will that look when they are 15 or 30?” “With each successive grade, the circle of awareness expands wider and wider, bringing in greater and greater complexity,” says Rabbi Spratt. “Students begin by relating primarily to their own classmates, but eventually come to consider the experiences and struggles of fellow New Yorkers as well as people around the world.” Through a multitude of hands-on service learning opportunities, Elementary and Middle school students are introduced to real issues that affect others: they visit early childhood classrooms in Harlem and on the Lower East Side, participate in book clubs with senior citizens through Dorot, and spend a day at the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, helping to revitalize both the canal and the neighborhood. On the 6th Grade class trip to Washington, D.C., students spend time with people who are homeless, meet
with various social service agencies, and help clean up public parks. Then in 7th Grade, on their trip to the South, students learn about the region’s role in civil rights history, volunteer at a food bank, and learn about the ongoing issues associated with gentrification in Memphis. EFFECTING CHANGE
Each student’s RSS experience culminates in a trip to Israel. “While in Israel we often have moments that intersect with the classroom curriculum as well as the values that students learn about and exhibit in their day-to-day lives,” says Ira Glasser, Chair of the History Department and Israel Trip Coordinator. At the Bible Lands Museum, students facilitate games and activities for Israeli and Palestinian children from West and East Jerusalem. By engaging in work that promotes compassion between different groups of people, our students come to understand the value of coexistence, not just in Israel but throughout the world.
9
“We try to reinforce the importance of simultaneously looking inward and looking outward,” says Mr. Glasser. “We encourage students to look inward and ask themselves, ‘Who am I and what is my place in this world?’ and then look outward and consider, ‘What are my interests and where can I make a significant impact?’” When students realize that their social activism can be driven by their own personal passions, they feel even more inspired to be part of important changes in their communities and the world. ALUMNI IN ACTION
Rachel Landis ’15 and Alexander Pearlman ’97 have each found places to make their voices heard. Upon graduating from college, Alex accepted a job with Teach for America in an underserved public school in New Orleans. As a high school math teacher, Alex not only improved his students’ state exam scores, but consulted with the principal on the school’s ability to accommodate students with special needs. He then became involved in founding a new network of charter schools in the area.
10
“During my time in New Orleans, I saw how I could keep growing the impact of my work—that I could have influence first over a classroom, then over a few classrooms, then schoolwide, and finally network-wide over a number of schools,” he says. “My experience at Rodeph Sholom School was absolutely the foundation on which everything else was built.” Rachel, currently a senior at The Bronx High School of Science, says that activism and social justice have been her passions for as long as she can remember. For Rachel, this means regularly attending protests, holding the position of Social Action Vice President for the New York Area Region of the North American Federation of Temple Youth, and an internship on Capitol Hill. Last spring, Rachel helped organize the NYC Says Enough rally in Washington Square Park, as part of a nationwide school walkout protesting gun violence. “A lot of my understanding of the change-making process, whether it's related to legislation, awareness, or fundraising was taught to me during my time at RSS, both through classes and through community service programs,” she says.
PURPOSE DRIVEN LIVES
PAYING IT FORWARD
The idea of making a real impact on the lives of others resonated with Emi Silverstein ’15. Emi says that her mother instilled this sense of moral obligation in her from a young age. “One of the reasons my mom loves RSS so much is that it wasn’t just at home that I was getting a social actionthemed education, but I was getting it at school too,” she says. Now a senior at The Spence School, Emi says that she regularly uses many of the tools that she acquired from service learning at RSS. “While researching nonprofits in 7th Grade, I learned to analyze data in order to better understand the background of an organization,” she says. For years, Emi has been involved with the Good+ Foundation, which aims to break the cycle of family poverty. In the spring, she interned at Project Rousseau, an organization that empowers youth in at-risk communities to reach their full potential and pursue higher education. “One of the best parts of that experience was building connections with kids who are Muslim,” she says. “It was the first time that many of them had heard about a Jewish upbringing like mine, because I come from an interfaith family and went to a Jewish school.”
“At RSS, one of our main goals is to imbue in our students a sense of enduring hope - a belief that the world can and must get better and that it’s our responsibility to be part of that,” explains Rabbi Spratt. Ben Silverman ‘82 takes this responsibility seriously. With a thriving career as a television show creator and producer, Ben and his wife, Jennifer Cuoco, also find time to help others. Ben is involved with Seeds of Peace, a group helping to foster understanding among young people from adversarial cultures, and also serves on the board of directors of Best Buddies, an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. More than 30 years after graduating from RSS, he not only embodies the values that we promote, but believes in making the school a philanthropic priority. Ben recognized all first-time alumni gifts to the 2017-18 Annual Fund with a $54 match, and hopes that other alumni will follow his lead. “Ben Silverman’s generosity is meaningful in so many ways,” says Mr. Karpf. “Alumni are key members of our community, and the fact that he continues to cherish this bond after so many years speaks to the strength of these ties.” “Our goal is to encourage students to live a life driven by purpose, but even more importantly, to help each young person define what that means to them,” says Mr. Karpf. “How do they want to apply these lessons about ethics, morality, and service? We want each child to be able to look in the mirror, feel proud of the person they are, and know that this world needs them.”
At RSS, being mindful of your blessings and helping others go hand in hand. When Maya Eskenazi ’16 considered the blessings in her life, she reflected on one that was seemingly simple but easily overlooked: basketball. “I’ve played basketball for more than 12 years and it has really helped shape who I am,” she says. Maya and her brother, Benjamin ’20, started their own nonprofit organization, Wish Together, Swish Together to repair basketball courts at public schools and low-income housing units in Manhattan. The first court they repaired was right in the neighborhood, on 90th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. “I walked past there every day, and the court was really run-down, with a cracked floor, no net, and a broken backboard,” says Maya. “Wanting to help these kids have the same kinds of experiences that I’ve had made this work personal.”
11
VOLUNTEERS Throughout the year, our tireless volunteers can be found at Shabbat Tables on Fridays, helping out in the library, and organizing events like Staff Appreciation Week and the Caregiver Breakfast. It is because of our volunteers, who generously devote their time and energy to RSS, that these projects— and so many more—are possible. Their dedication benefits our entire school and demonstrates the importance that we, as a community, place on enhancing our children’s educational experience.

Being involved with the RSS Parents Association for the past six years has helped me grow as a parent and give back to my kids in ways I didn’t know were possible. Thanks to the work of hundreds of parent volunteers, and the history of strong parent participation, there are PA opportunities and programs for everyone. Thank you for the incredible commitment of the Executive Board members, present and past, for laying the foundation, putting in the hours, and evolving with our school and world to bring the best possible events to RSS. While I will miss leading this team, I know my family and I will continue to benefit long after our time at RSS.

A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
It is an honor to serve the RSS community as Chair of the Development Committee and member of the Board of Directors. This year’s accomplishments, however, are actually a product of the past efforts of our dedicated volunteers, especially my predecessor Natalie Silverstein, who set us on a course for many years of growth ahead. Thank you for sharing your vision and energy as well as continuing your hard work on our behalf. 2018 was a productive year at Rodeph Sholom. We upgraded our facilities, aligning our divisions with our real estate, and invested in our curriculum, creating new positions and welcoming new faculty. In particular, Julie Sogg Seymour, our new Director of Development, hit the ground running, working tirelessly to build on our momentum. As we look forward, it’s important to remember all that the Annual Fund enables. Philanthropy is our risk capital, allowing us to focus on the long term, investing for the future and growing the pie for all: additional tuition assistance so our community can welcome all families, expanded programming so we can nurture our students’ diverse interests, and better technology, equipment, and supplies to support our amazing faculty. The Friends of Rodeph Sholom contributed over $1,600,000 to our school this past year. These funds will be used to underwrite a percentage of our total expenditures to help us balance the budget. But it’s not just about balancing a budget. The support of Friends allows us to stay on our front foot as we strive to be ever better. We contribute to the Annual Fund not to say thank you for what’s been done, but to ensure we can do even more in the future, asking our leaders to imagine what’s possible and invest wisely. We thank you, our supporters, for your confidence and faith and hope you will continue to help us build a stronger school and community together.
Our fundraising efforts would not be possible without our dedicated team of parents, friends, and family members who volunteer their time and energy to the RSS Annual Fund. ANNUAL FUND CO-CHAIRS

GIFTS TO THE ANNUAL FUND ALUMNI Through high school and beyond, RSS alumni remain valued members of our community. This year, Ben Silverman ’82 raised the bar for alumni giving by donating an additional $54 for each alumni gift from a first-time donor. Support from alumni is a demonstration of the lasting impact of an RSS education.
“ I give because RSS helped shape me into who I am today. In Mr. Gruber’s 3rd Grade class I learned how to use Photoshop for the first time, a skill that is important in my work today. Creativity is important, and RSS recognizes that.” EITAN DARWISH ’13 1979

“ I choose to give annually to RSS chiefly out of a deep sense of gratitude to the stellar foundation it gave me for my academic career. It instilled in me a work ethic that laid the groundwork for all of my future endeavors (successful and not), provided me with some amazing teacher-mentors, and a pool of peers that was genuinely good and kind.
