RECIPE FOR SUCCESS: PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS Collateral Pieces for Corporate Wellness by Alicia Rodriguez Dates: 01/16/2012 - 02/17/2012 Description: As part of the dietetic internship community nutrition rotation, I developed four collateral pieces on savvy eating and shopping, meal planning, and nutrition labels for the corporate wellness program hosted by Recipe for Success. Importance: Nutrition education as part of worksite wellness targets a population with high prevalence and incidence of diet-related chronic diseases, such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes, to name a few. These collateral pieces provide tips on how to make smart food choices in an achievable manner. Challenges: I was not able to visit the facilities in which Recipe for Success was going to host the wellness program. Therefore, it was difficult to gain a better understanding of the priority population's needs and wants. To overcome this challenge, I interviewed the director of operations at the organization and leader of this project, Molly Kaminsky. Proficiency Areas and Skills Developed: Written communication, creativity, and problem solving Spanish Translation of Monthly Newsletters by Alicia Rodriguez Dates: 01/16/2012 - 02/17/2012 Description: As part of the dietetic internship community nutrition rotation, I translated six monthly fliers to Spanish. These fliers are for the family members of students attending the elementary schools where Recipe for Success teaches cooking and gardening classes. The fliers have tips for healthy eating and quick and easy recipes for parents to prepare at home. Importance: Houston has a large Hispanic and Latino population and many times the children speak some English, but their parents do not. Therefore, it is important that all the educational materials are translated to Spanish to make nutrition education more effective and allow parents to be involved in their children's school education. Challenges: There are numerous Spanish-speaking countries and they all have different ways to say certain words, especially food items. I researched online and among Spanish-speaking friends to find the most common words used for certain food items. Sometimes I also provided the two words for the food item or word of choice. Proficiency Areas and Skills Developed: Written communication, creativity, and Spanish translation.
