“Welcome To South Florida” In this issue, we are showcasing three exceptional shows expanding over 100 miles and in three counties that form our Tri-county area. While going through the many pictures that were taken at each event, it came to mind how fortunate we are, those of us who live in South Florida. In every show, we were in company of so many visitors from out of town, visitors from places as far as China, Russia and Argentina, literally from all corners of the world. Not to mention all the out of state license plates, that once a year make a temporary home until one day they decide to stay. Truly we have been influenced by the whole world, and it is harder to find a 2nd generation South Floridian than a new Florida resident. At the same time, it is so easy to pick out South Florida from any picture when you see it. The palm trees, the architecture, the beautiful people with their distinctive style. We are fortunate to live in a place where so many people come to vacation, and so many more dream they can come. There is no question South Florida is Sui Generis; of its own kind.

South Beach, Fla.

Car Show Report

Art Deco Classic Car Fest

The South Florida Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America out did themselves once again. I do not think you can get a better setting for a car show than South Beach Deco District. Cars as old as from the early 1900’s lined Ocean Drive in a beautiful medley of color and style. It was like traveling back in time while promenading through a parade of cars parked right in front of the many hotel and restaurants that form this distinct architectural treasure. This event is part of the 37th Annual Art Deco Weekend with estimated crowds of 300,000 visitors. Arts and Crafts, Jazz Music, and the interactive games DocoPoly and Catch Me If You Can, engaged the crowds in fun activities.

Hollywood Dream Car Classic Show Dennis Gage, the host of cable TV’s “My Classic Car”, made a special appearance at the Hollywood Dream Car Classic Show at Young Circle. Dennis mingled with the crowd, took photos, and signed autographs. Thanks to Joe Bevelacqua from Cobra Joe Productions, Rods &Classics USA had the opportunity to chat with Dennis. During our time we were talking, we noticed how personable Dennis is. We asked him of his beginnings and you can say that things just happened for him. He pioneered television with his type of show. His love of cars trumped his PhD in chemistry and now he is an icon in the car show world. He kids around claiming he is the most over educated TV personality. Dennis is not only a fan of cars, but also motorcycles, of which he has done a few tours with his son throughout the States. It is in his plans to do another travelling tour to Nova Scotia. Motorcycling is probably the best way to enjoy our country’s beauty. Another one of his passions is mountain climbing. It is all about the view. Finally, we could not end our conversation with Dennis before asking him where he got his curly handle bar mustache. He candidly replied, “Simple, I was born with it”. We encourage everyone to watch Dennis Gage on “My Classic Car”, and as Dennis says at the end of the program, “Honor the timeless classics”. Hollywood Dream Car Classic Show has been wonderful this year. Every first Sunday of the month, Joe Bevelacqua and the city of Hollywood have brought special guests to share time and memories with the local community. For that, we thank you.

The Rooster The Rooster Car Hooper Hey!! It’s the guy with the red montecarlo from the picnic.. My name is alex from the Majestic car club.. The name of the car is red rooster.. The car wa s originally built by bow tie Miami by mike and Freddy.. The car been featured in music videos.. But it didn’t hop like it was suppose to be.. I bought it late 2012 and change the whole set up.. Put in a high hitters set up with 11 dekas and push the pivot point back..Chicho and Pancho from the club pain ted and body worked it in pompano fl.. Chicho also put 4 tweeters 6 6/9 2 8s and 2 12 pioneers with 4 nanos for the amps.. It took us about a year to do the make over.. Red rooster 87 montecarlo 4.3 stock 14inch wire wheels 42 inch sunroof Hopping cars as u kno come from the lowrider culture.. To begin with a hopper is to start 1st with the frame.. U must reinforce the frame so it can with stand the weight on the hop.. Then reinforce everything on the car like undercarriage like a arms and the rear end.. Also the quarter panels.. Then you get a hydraulic set up.. I have a high hitters single pump set up.. Then u set up the pistons in place put some batteries batteries in the car.. Then u have a hopper. But now in days it’s all about being the highest and the cleanest rides.. So I went all out with the paint music interior and the hydros.. Got the car painted by Chicho and Pancho in pompano.. Sounds by Chicho and Geo.. Hydraulic set up by hoppers hydraulics in Hialeah.. And still working on the car...

Nostalgia The Bricklin SV-1 No Sleep ‘Til Bricklin? Imagine a snapshot in time when cars were plastic, had suede seats and were only available in colors that you would find in Christmas lights. Sounds like paradise? Of course it doesn’t. But it does makes for an interesting story...the story of the car called the Bricklin SV-1. The SV-1 (short for Safety Vehicle-1) was the brainchild of Malcolm Bricklin, a self-made US-born entrepreneur who had worked his way up from the building supply business into the automobile industry, and was best known for founding Subaru of America in 1968. In the early 1970’s, Bricklin had a dream to create a car that was far ahead of its time in regards to safety standards, yet was affordable and easy to maintain. He took his dream to Canada, and was able to convince the government of New Brunswick to provide him with a manufacturing plant in the province and loan money to get his business rolling. Determined to get production up and running, Bricklin persevered through cost overruns, labor difficulties and material supply issues, with the first SV-1 rolling off the assembly line in the summer of 1974. There were a number of interesting features in the car. The body was comprised of acrylic bonded to fiberglass, similar to the body of the Chevrolet Corvette, of which the SV-1 was theoretically a competitor. Automatic gull-wing doors, activated by the push of a button on the center console or the car’s exterior, were standard equipment and the SV-1 remains the only car to date to provide these in every vehicle. Based on Bricklin’s belief that smoking while driving was too distracting, the car contained no cigarette lighter or ashtray, even as optional equipment. True to its name, the Safety Vehicle came in a choice of five “Safety” colors: White, Red, Orange, Suntan and Green, guaranteeing that the car would be spotted by other motorists and, presumably, law enforcement personnel (for better or for worse). In another nod to safety, the frame of the car contained a steel roll cage and side rails to isolate drivers from impacts.

Novelty can be a selling point, but quirkiness can go both ways, and the oddities surrounding the Bricklin eventually spelled doom for this one-of-a-kind vehicle. The car was prone to overheating due to extremely small radiator openings feeding air to a large V-8 engine. The automatic gull-wing doors – a selling point – malfunctioned and were extremely expensive for the company to fix. Bricklin, for all his financial success, was not knowledgeable in the nuts and bolts of running an automobile company. For reasons we may never know, he surrounded himself with family members as officers of the Bricklin car company and sold cars at a price that was estimated to be less than half of what it cost to build them. Needless to say, by the end of 1976 the assembly line had shutdown, the Bricklin SV-1 ended its short run through the market and the car began its trip towards legend status. Bricklin’s creation did not fade away completely, as it was featured in a TIME magazine series in 2007…unfortunately, on their list of the worst 50 cars of all time. That seems a bit harsh for this obscure bit of automotive oddness that pushed the boundaries of the era and was founded on a dream of protecting the passengers while providing an enjoyable driving experience. While it did not achieve its goals, the SV-1 is a beacon of entrepreneurial sprit and maintains a loyal fan base despite (or because of) its history.

What was the first car show you attended? My first car show was in 2005 at Cauley Square. I took my 1972 Javelin. That’s when I started getting more interested in the classic car hobby. Later I became a member of the AACA. My interest and knowledge of old classic cars began to grow. It was very exciting.

Up-close & Personal OSCAR CASTRO Meet Oscar Castro. Despite some physical impediments, he finds a way to give back to the community and serve his fellow man. Oscar is the founder of Benefitcarshows.com. An organization that helps raise funds for charities and needy groups. Last year he was able to help raise thirty-five thousand dollars and help Toys for Tots surpass 1500 toys, in our view, a total success. He is also the President of the Antique Automobile Club of America South Florida Region (AACA) and AMC car enthusiast. Rods & Classics USA had a recent interview with Oscar and this is what he had to say: Oscar, tell us a little bit about yourself: I grew up in Miami. I attended Miami Springs Senior High School and graduated in 1972. Back then, Miami Springs was the only high school to have a computer programing class. I really enjoyed it. I decided that computers were going to be my career. What did you do after you graduated from high school? After high school, I went to work for the Federal Reserve. It was a very demanding job. I was always on call. I was given one of the original cell phones. The darn thing was in a brief case. Later, I went to work for myself. After twenty-two years of being selfemployed I went to work for American Bankers. I retired in 2008. Is there a car that you always wanted? In 1973, I remember going to buy a car with my wife Marcia. We had just gotten married and we went to an AMC dealer. There I saw this beautiful 1972 Javelin. I fell in love with it. I wanted that car! I was like a kid in a toyshop. Then, I heard my wife say, “that doesn’t look like a family car,” She brought me back down to Earth. We ended up getting an AMC Hornet Station Wagon. Did you ever find a Javelin? Thirty years later, I said to myself, I need to find that Javelin that I had to pass up. After three years of searching, I found a Pierre Cardin Javelin. I found it in Texas. Just like the Javelin I passed up. I bought it and shipped it to my front door. It has been my pride and joy!

How did Benefitcarshows.com start? I got the idea when my son David was put in-charge of the Navy Ball at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Key West. He needed to raise about $8000 dollars for the event. David called me asking for some ideas and help. I said, why don’t we have a car show. So, we had a four day car show in the Navy Base. It was a great success! From then on, I began helping other organizations with fundraisers. I created Benefit Car Show right after that. What have been some of the organizations that you have helped trough Benefitcarshows.com? We have helped the Army of Hope Church, Wings Over Miami, Village of Palmetto Bay, U.S. Marines Toys for Tots, and several others, but let me tell you that it would have been impossible to do so without the help of others such as Bullseye Powder Coating. When did you become President of the AACA South Florida Region? In December 2013, I became President of the South Florida Region. We have a great group of classic car enthusiast in the AACA. What have you accomplished as the AACA South Florida Region President? So far my accomplishment has been to implement a Youth Program, ages 12 to 25 can now join the South Florida Region as long as they are in school. The cost is $12 dollars a year. One last question, You are an AMC guy, how did you end up with that 1973 Mustang Convertible? That’s a funny story. My son in law was looking to buy a 1973 Mustang. I was helping him look for one and found this one. I had taken my five year old granddaughter with me to see the car. She climbed in the front seat and looked so cute inside. Before you know it, I bought the car.
