NOVEMBERING AROUND Greetings fellow enthusiasts. If you are wondering about the title, I will explain. November is one of my favorite times of the year. The temperatures begin to get cooler, the afternoons are breezy, engines run better and cruising around in a convertible or in your favorite ride is priceless. November is a month of gatherings and a prelude to the festive season up ahead. Visiting family and friends is a great reason to drive your car around town or take a road trip. Also, it is the month for Turkey Run: The largest car show in the U.S.A. The Turkey Run is held at the famous Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fl. It lasts four consecutive days. I can say that it is almost impossible to see it all. There are over 6,000 classic cars for show and for sale, swap meets, hand crafted toys, food and entertainment, and a great family environment. This is definitively an event to experience. To all our readers, it gives me great pleasure to wish you and your family a memorable Thanksgiving.

Car Shows Report

Key Largo, Fla.

The Cars and Friends Cruise-In is held the first Saturday of the month at D’Hookers Sports Bar and Grill on mile marker 102.3 in Key Largo. This car show is one of the best in the Florida Keys. You can meet new friends, have some car talk, and enjoy the best beer and tastiest sea food in the Keys. The show was first organized by a group of friends that saw the need to have a place to gather with other car enthusiasts. There were plenty of classic cars in the Keys, but nowhere to meet. After getting the go ahead from the owners of D’Hookers Sports Bar and Grill, the footwork began and so far it has been running strong for two and a half years. The Car Show runs from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. For more information contact: Pete Meyers at (305)451-4105 www.d-hooker.net

NCRS

Hampton, Va.

National Convention **By Ed Nieves Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the National Corvette Restorer Society National Convention. Before I get into that issue, I just want to take this opportunity and give a little background on who and what the NCRS is. The National Corvette Restorer Society is an organization dedicated to the restoration, preservation, history, and enjoyment of Corvettes from 1953 to 1996. The organization was formed in 1974 and it currently has more than 15,000 members’ nation wide. Their meets consists of chapter and regional events held throughout the U.S. The NCRS has a comprehensive, but friendly, judging process that judges every aspect of your car. The judging is not based on how “shinny” your car is, but the appearance of the factory correctness. The primary award that most seek is the NCRS Top Flight Award, and others continue up the award ladder to seek a Performance Verification Award, commonly known as PV. I first took interest in the NCRS approximately four years ago when I purchased my 1995 convertible Corvette. After participating in local “shinny” shows, I wanted to participate in a larger scale event, so I was told about the NCRS by Jack Exter, a fellow Miami Corvette owner and NCRS member. To be completely honest, at the onset the entire process sounded very intimidating, but after educating myself, I was excited about taking on the challenge. After joining the National NCRS and the Florida Chapter, I entered the Florida Chapter Regional Meet and took my car to Kissimmee, Fl. where I obtained a Top Flight Award. Recently in July, I was fortunate enough to attend their National Convention that was held in Hampton, Virginia. My intent was to observe what took place and participate as an observer judge. Since I plan to enter my car in the next Nation Convention, I figured I would scout out the process before I take the dive. Additionally, as the editor of the Florida Chapter newsletter, I took that opportunity to take pictures for our newsletter (The Fuel Line). All-in-all, I was very impressed with how organized the event was. Hundreds of Corvettes were meticulously parked inside the convention hall as the owners prepared for the judging process seeking their special awards. Florida members did very well. The following were award winners: Robert Lopez a Duntov Award for his 1967, George Coniglio a Duntov Award for his 1954, Kingston Bowen a Duntov Award for his 1966, Richard Small a Duntov Award for his 1967, Jack Exter a McLellan Mark of Excellence Award for his 1990 ZR1, Joe Zsido a McLellan Award for his 1991, and Gary Spears a Hill Award for his 1995 ZR1. These are very prestigious awards, so if you know these individuals, congratulate them when you run into them. In closing, I hope this information has triggered Corvette South Florida owners to take an interest in the NCRS and get involved. Dream Cars Weekend

Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

By Tara Bush How Dream Cars Weekend Came to Be It started with Disney taking notice of the car community with the huge interest from the Mustangs and their national event. Thru a friends’ recommendation, I was encouraged to organize an open car show in contractual partnership with the Mustangs. I accepted the challenge and signed my life away in October 2012. I did not choose the date nor location, I followed the Mustang’s lead. I did everything myself from learning web design to passing out flyers, including financing it up front. Disney comes at a cost, room bookings along with a minimum food and beverage sales. Hence, the necessity for nightly parties. As time went along, the car community assisted by passing the word around and giving me encouragement. I would like to thank everyone who attended as a car participant, a spectator, and an exhibitor in the first ever Dream Cars Weekend. After 10 long and tireless months of promoting, advertising, and organizing, it was a huge success overall. We encountered some bumps and bruises along the way, but pulled together and had a great time. The final count was 360 registered show cars, 525 rooms booked, Friday night party sold out at 300 people, Saturday night party sold out at 500 people, and 28000 square feet of exhibition hall filled with vendors. Headers Upclose & Personal Large, one of the most creative car builders in our community, gave Rods & Classics USA magazine a recent interview. This is what he had to say. How did you get started with Bowtie Connection? Well, a friend of mine is good friends with John Kennedy, the original California Bowtie. When I was building “Certified Gangster”, I did not want any pictures out until I completed the car. Behind my back, my buddy took some photos of my build and sent them to John. As a result, I caught John Kennedy’s attention and he requested a meeting. At the time, I had no idea how he knew about me. Long story short, my friend confessed what he did and a couple of months later I had a meeting with John. I was offered to carry his name in Florida. He was convinced that my talents would be up to par with Bowtie Connections.

And by the way, how did you get your unusual name? I got the nickname in middle school. Funny story, but not so funny when it happened. In my first day of middle school, we were asked to describe ourselves using a word that starts with our last name initial. When it was my turn, someone in the classroom yelled “Large”. What happened next was a suspension for punching the kid that called me the name. When I came back to school, everyone was calling me Large. I decided to turn a negative into a positive, and now I only respond to the name Large.

When did all this happen? This was in 2002. That is when I became a business. Before that it was all under the hobbyist umbrella. What would you say is your expertise? Well, I do everything, mechanical work, fabrication, customizing, but I would say that I am an expert in design. Is there something special that defines a Bowtie Connection car? The one thing that is common to all our designs is that they are all different. What is the most difficult type of car to build? I think it is the low-riders. They compete in points, and there is so many body modifications, tricks, themes, etc. It is very intricate work. What is your most memorable build? A 1965 Lincoln Continental, it was the first time we had a job with a deadline. We spent days in the shop without stopping, but we made it. It was a challenge. We showed up at the show like zombies. It validated us as full professionals. You mentioned point scale judging, do you compete? I don’t, I stopped because the low-riders are not what they use to be. Politics also started to kick in the competitions, and being from the east coast, it makes you an underdog. What is the highest award you have won? The Mothers Shine Award at SEMA. It is an award to the car that stands out the most in the show. I also won the Low-Rider Excellence Award which, in the low-rider field, is the car that is best built in all aspects. Have you created your masterpiece yet? No, not yet. What advise would you give to someone that wants to build or restore a car? Take it in steps. People jump around a lot and that results in never finishing the car. So if you start lets say on the frame, stick to it until its done.

By George Fernandez The Ford Crown Victoria This edition dream car is the 1949 through 1956 Ford Custom/Victoria/Crown Victoria/Fairlane (same model with different trims). In 1949, Ford came out with its new model line in over a decade. The name “Victoria” was first used in 1951. The car was designed by car stylist Gordon M. Buehrig, who was formerly with Studebaker. (Notice the bullet nose resemblance.) It came as a two door no-pillar hard top with Ford’s durable flat head V8 with 100 horse power as the only engine offered. The car also featured front independent suspension. The 1951 Victoria proved to be very popular at the time, out selling the Chevy Bel Air by 7000 units. People liked the clean lines, posh interior, and good performance. The 1949 to 1951 are considered the best looking Fords for that era. Over the years these cars became a favorite with hot rodders and customizers. Ford had a model change for 1952. In this year, the car had a full curved windshield. For 1954, Ford came out with the “Bubbletops”. The bubble top was a transparent plexiglass forward roof section. This was the idea of designer L. David Ash. A sunshade was offered to keep the interior cool during those hot sunny days. The car was also offered with Ford’s new 239 C.I. OHV V8 engine which replaced the old flat head V8. The new engine gave better performance offering 130 horse power. In 1955 and 1956, the Fairlane Crown Victoria was the top of the line model. This year’s model offered the “Fairlane Stripe” side trim and some cosmetic changes were added. Two tone paint and the plexiglass top was offered again. The cars were solidly built and had good performance. Ford’s new Y-block V8s were offered, including the new 312 C.I. V8 with 225 horse power. These cars came in many forms, from convertibles, sedans, and wagons. The low production of the 1955-56 Crown Victoria plastic tops make them the most desirable by collectors. These cars have clean and colorful styling, good performance, and solid construction quality.

the proud owner of one of these beauties. He was gracious to share with Rods & Classics USA magazine the story of his 1956 Ford Victoria. As the story goes, in 1981 Santiago and his wife were in Ocala, Florida on vacation. Santiago spotted the car in a classic car dealer lot. He new there was something special about that car. It brought back memories of his youth living in Cuba. He remembered admiring a similar Ford driving in his old neighborhood. The ten year old youth knew that one day he would own one just like it. The young Santiago loved the chrome and beautiful styling of the car. The passion for the Ford Victoria had been ignited. He and his wife purchased the car for $3500 and brought it back to Miami. After owning it for a few years, he decided it was time to restore it. A ground up restoration was started. After some set backs, two and half years later the car was brought back to better than original condition. Santiago added power front disc brakes and an aftermarket air conditioner for added safety and comfort. The original power windows and power seats were restored to perfection. The motor and transmission were rebuilt to like new condition. All the chrome and stainless steel were beautiful once again. And the car was brought back to its original factory two tone colors, Fiesta Red and Colonial White. Here are the Ford production numbers for the Victoria models: 1949 Custom Club Coupe 2 dr. 150,254 1950 Custom Crestliner 2 dr. 17,601 1951 Custom Crestliner 2 dr 8703 1951 Custom Victoria 2 dr. 110,286 1952 Victoria Unknown 1953 Victoria 128,300 1954 Crestline Skyliner (Bubble Top) 13,344 1955 Victoria 2 dr. 113,372 1955 Crown Victoria 2 dr. 33,165 1955 Crown Victoria (Bubble Top) 1999 1956 Victoria 2 dr. 177,735 1956 Crown Victoria 2 dr. 9209 1956 Crown Victoria (Bubble Top) 603 We would like to thank Santiago Valladeres for allowing Rods and Classics Magazine the use of his 1956 Ford Victoria in the writing of this article, and Santiago’s good friend, Jason Delgado, for his great pictures.¶

Nostalgia

The Volkswagen Beetle

**By: George Fernandez

Catch the Bug Those cute bugs! If you were around in the 1960s, they seemed to multiply by the hundreds. You could not drive through a parking lot or neighborhood without seeing at least two or three. Everyone loved their unusual shape. No, we are not talking about a pest. We are talking about the Volkswagen Beetle! How did it all begin?

The Beetle platform was very versatile. VW produced several different models using the Type I platform, including the famous Volkswagen Bus and several other variations. During World War II, the platform was also used on some military vehicles. From the 1960s ‘til the present, the VW platform has been used for dune buggies and kit cars.

In 1933, Adolf Hitler met with Ferdinand Porsche for the development of a “Peoples Car” or Volks Wagen. Hitler wanted Porsche to come up with a car that was affordable to the German family. The car had to fit two adults and three children. It also had to achieve a speed of 62 MPH.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Beetle had a cult following. The car was loved by the hippies and advertisers. In the Disney movie “Herbie the Love Bug”, the star was a VW Beetle. Pest Exterminator Truly Nolan was known for their yellow Beetles with mouse ears, nose and tails. The hippies painted flower power and peace signs on their Beetles. If you were around in that era, you remember packing in as many people as possible into a Beetle. Just about everybody remembers owning or riding one of these cars at some point in their life. These were incredible and reliable little cars.

With the financial backing by the Third Reich, Ferdinand Porsche set out on his car design. By 1938, the little compact was in production. It was simple in design. It had a rear mounted, four cylinder air cooled engine. It also had a new innovative torsion independent suspension. The car was known as the Type I. Production of the Volkswagen Type I continued from 1938 to 2003. The design stayed basically the same for all these years. Only minor changes and improvements were made. Volkswagen began using the “Beetle” name for the Type I in 1967. Facing stiff competition from Japanese cars, production officially halted in 1978. However, the car continued to be produced in small numbers in Mexico and Brazil until 2003.

Today, there are many VW Beetle clubs and organizations. Beetle enthusiasm has not stopped. They are a great car for the beginner car enthusiast. Beetles are simple to maintain and repair. Parts are inexpensive and plentiful from several aftermarket dealers. Millions and millions of these cars were produced throughout the years. So they are not going away any time soon! Just go to a car show and see for yourself. ¶
