ANNOUNCEMENTS Coffee and donuts will be available near the entrance to the Exhibit Hall, Building L, on the northeast side of the high school campus and the cafeteria located in Building A. A first aid center will be located in Building H, Room 126. The Jefferson County Health Dept. will have flu shots available on both days at an additional cost. This year, the flu shots have the H1N1 in the flu shot. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please see the registration table in the lobby of H building.

Organizations will set up stands for food and drink for participants between Building A and F from 10 a.m. to 2:00 both days. The cafeteria in Building A will be available for seating.

Enclosed see maps for available parking lots; the closer parking lots will fill early. Parking space on campus is limited. Shuttle service is available from the Park Plaza (located on S. 10th St. behind IGA) to the high school campus on Thursday, Oct. 28 & Friday, Oct. 29. Shuttle pick up from the conference will be in front of Building H; please look for signs. CPDU labels will be provided at the conclusion of the session. A frequent lecturer and presenter, Olson has also been a visiting assistant professor at Wheaton College in Norton, MA, and is the author of Schools as Colonizers (2008), a book that reconsiders the educational ideas of the radical school critics of the 1960s. She is also the author of The Wounded Student. She received her doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2005 and was an English major at Vassar College. Olson’s work as an educational consultant focuses on instructional improvement and leadership development to better support all learners. She has been a consultant to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to the Kennedy School at Harvard University, and to many large public school systems and charter schools. She also writes for Education Week, Educational Leadership and Teacher Magazine. Prior to 1995, Bob served in several different positions in education. He was a janitor, principal, and superintendent of schools. He also played a few years of professional baseball. In his presentations, Bob strives to provide people with practical, solid information; challenge them to look at their own behaviors to see if any need adjusting; and provide a learning experience that is enjoyable to attend.

“Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life” Friday, Administrator’s Academy #674 “The Six Secrets of Change” Larry began his career in education as an instrumental music teacher after receiving his BM from SIU-C. After developing an award-winning band, he moved into education administration. Larry served as a high school principal for 14 years, claiming that this was his favorite role in education. He received his MS in Education Administration from EIU. He received his Specialist in Education Administration from SIU-E and he became an assistant superintendent. He ended his 34 year public education career, retiring in 2005 as an 11-year superintendent. Since retiring, he has been speaking and doing workshops in public and private schools. He is still serving as an adjunct instructor for Rockford College. She taught in elementary, junior and senior high schools and at the university level and has been chair of the education department and supervised student teachers. Nancy has been consultant for school districts, organizing workshops for small and large groups. Her speaking engagements have taken her from New York City—west. Nancy is an author of many books ranging from social studies books such as Abe Lincoln in New Salem and Presidents, All I Want to Know About Presidents to children’s reading books such as The Frog Who Wanted to Sing. Gary is a retired administrator and teacher. He received a bachelor’s degree in history, master’s in guidance and his specialist in administration from Eastern Illinois University. He began his career in southern Illinois at Lawrenceville and St. Joseph-Ogden. Gary served as asst. principal at the high school and later as principal of the junior high where he led the district’s adoption of the middle school concept. After retirement, he became an adjunct instructor for a field-based master program and is busy giving workshops in the area. Gary has been a workshop director for the Illinois Association of Student Councils and Co-Director of the National Leadership Training Center. Session: 5 “JUVENILE COURT—Procedures, New Directions and Hot Topics” Judge Frankland was born and raised in Edwards County. He graduated from SIU-C with a BA in government and minor in history. He attained his law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Missouri in 1973.He practiced law until 1998 when he was elected Edwards County Resident Circuit Judge. He currently serves as the Judge for the Second Judicial Circuit. Judge Frankland has been an attorney for a school board, city attorney, and director for 22 years at the Citizens National Bank in Albion, Illinois. He has served as president for the local Chamber, Rotary, and Albion Development Inc. He resides in Albion with his wife, Gloria. Session: 5 “JUVENILE COURT—Procedures, New Directions and Hot Topics” Judge Gamber graduated from Mt. Vernon Twp. High School, Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He received his B.A. from Northwester University majoring in history, going on to DePaul University Law school and receiving his J.D. In 1975, Judge Gamber engaged in private practice in Mt. Vernon until 1992. He was elected as Circuit Judge of Jefferson County until 1998 and he went on to be Chief Judge of Second Judicial Circuit. Judge Gamber is the presiding Judge in Criminal Felony Court and Juvenile Court in Jefferson County. He resides in Mt. Vernon with wife, Joy. He has two sons: Scott (married to Jessica Scott Gamber) and Brian. Scott is a teacher and head basketball coach at the Mt. Vernon Twp. High School. Jessica is a teacher at Waltonville High School. Brian is a student at SIU-C pursuing a career in teaching and coaching. Brian is currently the sophomore basketball coach at Mt. Vernon Twp. High School. Category: Juvenile Court/At Risk

Sessions: 3, 7 “Librarians’ Round Table” Sessions: 4, 8 “Everybody Writes!” Ann Garrett has presented at the Mt. Vernon Conference for several years. Born in southern Illinois, she has taught in the public school system for forty years as a special education teacher, gifted teacher, elementary teacher, middle school language arts teacher, public and high school librarian, high school and community college English teacher, high school department chair, and, currently, a language arts methods teacher at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale and part-time librarian at Mt. Vernon Township High School. Garrett is a National Board Certified Teacher in English/language arts. Besides her elementary, secondary, special education, library, and administrative endorsements, Garrett is also a certified school counselor and has English language learner post bacc certificate. In 2009 she became a fellow in the National Writing Project at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. Double Session: 1-2 “The 4th “R” Responsibility” Double Session: 5-6 “Connecting with Students Through Classroom Climate” Don Garrett graduated from Murray University in 1969 with a B.S. in chemistry and in 1971 with an M.A. in teaching science. He also acquired over 60 hours in PLS classes, counseling, administration, and teacher education courses. In the past 20 years, Don has trained over 4,000 teachers in PLS master’s level courses. The majority of those courses were/are held in Illinois and Indiana, but are also taught in Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. He retired from Carmi White County High School in May of 2005. While at the high school teaching chemistry, he worked with another teacher to co-develop and instruct a community-oriented, technology based, live event high school class. Don was recognized as a Master Teacher in 1984 by the Governor of Illinois. Lillian Polus Gerstner is the daughter of Holocaust survivors. From 1991 through 2008, she oversaw operations and programming for the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois in its Main Street facility in Skokie. With the opening of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in April 2009, she had undertaken a new role as Director of Special Projects, which embraces carrying out a wide spectrum of educational, remembrance and public programs. Ms. Gerstner received her undergraduate degree in theatre and speech education from Northwestern University. She has more than 25 years of teaching experience and has been acknowledged in such international publications as Holocaust and Genocide Studies for her grade appropriate bibliography and videography of Holocaust materials for students. In addition, Ms. Gerstner has served as advisor and director of Holocaust Expression Theatre, an activity of the Great Midwest Region B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, through which she has helped high school students develop and perform dramatic Holocaust related material. Recent participation in international programs conducted by the March of the Living and Action Reconciliation/Service for Peace included traveling to Poland, Israel and Germany. These journeys have contributed to Ms. Gerstner’s work on a biography of her mother’s wartime experiences in Berlin, and have added greater depth to the knowledge she shares with students of all ages. Sessions: 2, 3, 6, 7 “Understanding Transition Services Under IDEA: Do What?” C.W. is the Director of the Tri-County Special Education Joint Agreement based out of Murphysboro, Illinois. He has over 33 years of practical, hands-on experience working in poverty programs, vocational education, and special education. Dr. Hamilton has taught at the high school, community college, and university level. He worked as an Asst. Director for Transition Services as Wabash and Ohio Valley Special Education for over 17 years. During that time , Dr. Hamilton worked as a pre-vocational coordinator, vocational evaluator, teacher, and supervised a residential facility designed to address vocational and independent living skills of special education students within a nine county area. He also supervised the pre-vocational coordinator staff that developed transition plans for nearly 900 students annually. Internationally renowned horseman and best selling author Chris Irwin has gained invaluable insights into learning how to learn in his work with therapeutic and personal coaching. He continues to consult with universities on equine assisted learning programs curricula. In his live horse demonstrations, Chris will explain how horse sense and behavior relate directly to student behaviour. Honest, positive relationships between horse handlers and horses result in positive learning. The opposite is also true. During this double sessions, Chris will work with horses to coach audience volunteers on how horses read and react to human behaviour and body language. Those interactions will be translated into classroom behaviour between teachers and students. Learn how to build authentic, educational relationships with all of your students, including not only the successful but also the wounded, at-risk, disengaged, rebellious, defiant, even gifted and talented to facilitate your teaching and to maximize their learning. Students need you, their teachers, to be your best selves-every day, every period. In many cases, you are their only hope. Students attend to your body language, attitude, and word choice. Learn how to avoid building helpless, destructive, joyless, negative relationships and how to create therapeutic, educational, positive ones in this impressive and memorable session. She has published over 70 articles and book chapters in the area of derived stimulus relations and verbal behavior, and is particularly interested in the application of the derived stimulus relations research program to special populations. She is the editor of a book with Yvonne Barnes-Holmes entitled Derived Stimulus Relations Applications for Learners with Autism and Other Developmental Disorders: A Progressive Guide for Change. Dr. Rehfeldt is the editor and business manager for Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, The Behavior Analyst, The Analysis of Verbal Behavior, and Education and Treatment of Children. Dr. Rehfeldt and her students have delivered approximately 100 conference presentations over the years. She was the co-founder, program chair and past President of the Mid -American Association for Behavior Analysis. Ruth has been awarded the Rehabilitation Institute Teacher of the Year Award several times in recent years, and was the Teacher of the Year for the College of Education and Human Services during 2006. She is currently the project director on a nearly half-million dollar grant form the U.S. Department of Education which provides training for undergraduate Rehabilitation Services students. Also assisting in the presentations are the following: Kirsten Schaper, M.A., M.S., CC-SLP is a Speech/Language Pathologist and the Clinic Coordinator at the CASD. She holds a Masters of Arts in Linguistics and a Master of Science in Communication Disorders and Sciences, both from SIU-C. Her duties at the CASD include conducting evaluation, supervising graduate students in the CDS and BAT graduate programs, consulting on ongoing research, and conducting trainings for area service providers and SIU students. She collaborates extensively with the CASD Behavior Analysts. Leigh Grannan, Board Certified Analyst, earned a M.S. in Behavior Analysis and Therapy from SIU-C. Leigh has worked at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (CASD) as a Clinical Instructor for several years. Upon retirement, Ms. Roane established her own business, Educational Treasures, which provides professional development in a variety of areas. Each training includes time for teachers to create their own materials so she can assist them in the process. She has conducted workshops and training across Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee. She has also trained business office workers in the Chicago area for the last 5 years. In addition to the Mt. Dr. Jim Rosborg currently serves as Director of Graduate Education at McKendree University and instructor of graduate classes in curriculum and school law. Since his arrival at McKendree, Rosborg has been part of a team that has increased graduate enrollment to over 1,000 students. In June of 2005, Rosborg retired after eleven years as superintendent of the 3,750 Belleville Public School Dist. #118, Belleville, Illinois. He has consistently focused his energy on building a climate of collaboration to benefit all students. Under Rosborg’s leadership, Belleville #118 has some of the highest district scores in the State of Illinois. In addition, those schools received Golden Spike Awards, and the Northern Illinois University’s Spotlight Awards for their academic achievement. Rosborg himself is a past recipient of the Illinois Master Teacher Award, “Those Who Excel” Award, and “Break the Mold” Award from ISBE, and the 2004 Illinois Superintendent of the Year Award. He also collaborated in writing a textbook with Dr. Max McGee and Mr. Jim Burgett entitled What Every Superintendent and Principal Needs to Know. In addition, Rosborg has published articles on dealing with children with AIDS in the classroom and the need to adjust the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act for successful implementation. “One on One with Nick Hill” If you are a follower of the top ten plays of the day on ESPN, then you may have seen this year’s speaker this past spring. DuQuoin native Nick Hill was highlight number seven when he scored the winning touch down for the Orland Predators of the Arena Football League. How did this all-state basketball player become one of the top quarterbacks in the top Arena Football League in the country? Attending Western Kentucky on a basketball scholarship, Nick returned to SIU and was persuaded to not only play basketball but to also give football a try. The rest is history and the left handed throwing quarterback and tight handed shooting basketball guard was one of the last players cut by the Chicago Bears! The session will not leave any question uncovered, from why he gave up basketball, to what does the future hold. This should be an exciting session, not just for football minds, but for all southern Illinois sports fans!

Today’s coaches all took different paths to get where they are today. This should be an enlightened session for all fans. Is being a head coach in the future for this panel or are they satisfied where they are at? Those invited for this session include: Carterville’s Kevin Helfrich, Duquoin’s Keith Ellis, Herrin’s Dwayne Summers and Eldorado’s veteran football coach Vern Pollack.

“Basketball Coaches’ Panel” This may be one of the most entertaining sessions in the history of the Mt. Vernon Conference. Deon Thomas will stay and team up with invited Illinois teammates TJ Wheeler and Tommy Michael. How did a player from Chicago Simeon end up as best friends with southern Illinois products from Buckner and Hoffman? These three will reminisce back into their days at Illinois playing for coach Lou Henson, Jimmy Collins, Dick Nagy and Mark Coomes. No teammate of theirs will be forgotten but some will be singled out more than others. If you’re an Illini fan, or just a basketball fan, you won’t want to miss listening to these three guys.

“One on One with Deon Thomas” Deon Thomas is the leading scorer at the University of Illinois (2129 points) and is currently Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois. How did Mr. Basketball in Illinois (1989) and the 28th pick of Dallas end up coaching? Maybe his years overseas playing professional basketball in Spain, Israel, and throughout Europe had something to do with it. In Deon’s first year coaching the Trailblazers, his team finished fourth in the nation, losing both games in the final four in double overtime. Deon was named “coach of the year” in his conference, region and was also named top coach in his division in the state. This session will be one where you will need your clip board; it will be an X and O session where moderator, Tom Wheeler, will pick the mind of this very talented player and rising young basketball coach. Special emphasis will be placed on post play as this was Deon’s specialty. Coach Lou Henson has always said, “Deon is the best post player I ever coached!”
