Wild Fridays at Roedean The space to discover passions and fresh perspectives

The Year 7 ‘Wild Fridays’ programme is an exciting new initiative for the students to thrive at School, appreciating the nature which surrounds them on all sides, and developing new skills and knowledge which they will take forward into their new lives beyond Roedean. Every half term, 24 different Wild Fridays activities are offered, including Bushcraft, Meteorology, Farming, Horticulture, Land-yachting, Mountain Biking and Build Your Own Go-Kart.

Think beyond the ordinary ...with our Head, Heart, Hand Programme, offering 21st century skills for our Key Stage 3 girls The Head, Heart, Hand Programme is a weekly schedule, offering practical, positive and challenging activities for our Key Stage 3 students, designed to challenge the girls to think beyond what they might ordinarily do.

As an academic school, we seek to inspire curiosity and a love of learning in all our girls. The strength of teaching at Roedean is that discussion and debate sit at the heart of learning. The subjects offered in Key Stage 3 range from Modern Languages to Geography, from Classical Civilisation to Sciences, and from DT to Dance. This broad academic grounding, where passions are ignited and skills and confidence are acquired, provides the perfect foundation from which to move up to Key Stage 4, where our girls achieve a 90% pass rate of Grades 9-7.

Widening horizons, in wide open spaces The co-curricular programme offers a range of opportunities to explore interests and develop talents From the School’s foundation in 1885, a wide-ranging educational experience has always been central to life at Roedean. Our genuinely holistic ethos means that the School values highly the many elements of school life which take place beyond the classroom. There are clubs, societies, and activities for every taste: whether it’s exerting yourself (Squads / Fencing / Dance Fitness) expressing yourself (Life Drawing / Technical Theatre / Junior Drama) enjoying the great outdoors (Farm Club / Sea-Swimming) performing (Orchestra / Choir / Junior Dance), serving others (St Mark’s Sports Leaders), taking up a new skill (Sewing / Karate), or exploring your academic interests in greater depth (Junior STEM / Debating / Philosophy). These are just a few examples, and we hope that you can identify who you want to be in School, and feel prepared for life after Roedean. 9

A new journey begins... Claudia tells us what it’s like to start in Year 7 at Roedean

You joined Roedean as a Day girl in Year 7 from Windlesham School in September 2021. How did you find your first day? I knew some girls already from a local drama school that I attended before I came to Roedean, so I spotted some friendly faces from the minute I got here - plus everyone is really friendly anyway, so it was just good fun!

Do you have any advice for girls starting at Roedean? Don’t be scared about your first day! The teachers and the other girls are all really nice. I was really worried I wouldn’t remember all the different codes to get into all the buildings and that I would get lost, but it felt like I settled in really quickly.

What has been your favourite aspect of Roedean so far? My favourite thing about Roedean is probably the lunches! They’re amazing! The arancini is my favourite, and I love the jelly. 10

Alya explains what she loves about Weekly Boarding at Roedean You joined Roedean from Eaton Square Prep in September 2019...what have been your highlights since you have been at Roedean? The opportunities I get in Sport at Roedean are much better here than when I was in London. Since being at Roedean I have taken part in the SISNA Netball tournament and a number of Sussex and national cup matches in netball and hockey. I love that there’s a wide variety of sports available here that I just wouldn’t have had the chance to do if I were still in London. I also love the culture here. There’s such a wide diversity of nationalities and religions; I have friends from all over the world - Nigeria, Switzerland, Poland, Hong Kong, Soudi Arabia, and England!

What are your favourite aspects of being a Weekly Boarder? Weekly Boarding is such a good option for me. I feel so much more relaxed, but I’m also much better at organising myself. However, if I do forget anything, I can just pop back to my House - I couldn’t do that in London! Getting across London was tricky for me before, as it wasn’t safe to do it on my own and my dad was often busy at the times I needed to get somewhere. Now, I can do as many activities as I want during the week and there’s tons to choose from. The teacher support here is fantastic. It’s also great during Prep, because there’s a teacher there to help. Whenever I was doing prep at home my dad wasn’t much help! In the evenings, the Housemistress and boarding staff are always there with support and advice, and just as a friendly face.

Do you remember what made you want to become a Roedean Girl? Roedean cares! The Admissions team made me love this school so much. I remember when we first came to visit, when we left, my dad said “That’s the school for us.” WHAT THE PARENTS SAY...

‘Weekly Boarding gets Alya out of the pollution of London [and allows her] the chance to have everything she needs in one place... I love the idea that she is in the company of other girls of different ages and backgrounds. I am watching my daughter become a rounded, strong woman, and all the time I know I’m just one hour away.’ Parent 11
