Get to know Roedean Events Programme 2022–2023


Introduction From STEM to Visual & Performing Arts and Netball to Literature, at Roedean this year we are hosting a variety of exciting experience days and workshops to challenge and inspire aspirational girls wishing to apply to Roedean for 11+ (Year 7) entry in 2023. We welcome both individual bookings and groups from schools. By attending these days and working with some of our girls, we hope that those taking part might see a snapshot of their future self, as well as developing talents and being inspired to try something new. Rockpools Day Your journey to becoming a Roedean girl starts with a fishing net on the beach below school!

Who should come? All girls wishing to apply to Roedean for 11+ 2023 entry

What will you do? Disappear down Roedean’s secret tunnel to the sea, catch creatures in your nets as you explore the rockpools, take part in teambuilding activities and learn the intricacies and physics behind paper-aeroplane folding – will yours go the distance?

What will you get from the day? Rockpools Day is an exciting team-building day, giving you a chance to get to know the school, as well as some of the teachers and students. You’ll love it!

Wild Friday Experience Day A brand new Experience Day showcasing Roedean’s popular initiative for Key Stage 3, Wild Fridays, which aims to get children connected with nature and learning new skills outdoors.

‘The day we did land-yachting was so much fun… even though there was hardly any wind – and there’s always wind at Roedean!’ Year 7 pupil

Who should come? Girls in Year 5 who are keen to spend the day on the cliffs getting some fresh air and learning new skills whilst exploring Roedean’s 120 acres and stunning views.

What will you do? The day will include a carousel of outdoor pursuits in the following 5 strands: Bushcraft, Ecology, Farming, Horticulture and Outdoor Adventure, designed to give a taste of what you can expect from Friday afternoons at Roedean!

What will you get from the day?’ This is an opportunity to try some outdoor pursuits that many won’t have tried before, as well as learn some new outdoor skills that can be recreated at home with the whole family.

STEM Experience Day Are you a budding scientist, keen to do experiments in a proper lab, or do you enjoy problem-solving? If any of the above sounds familiar, or if STEM is an area that you are keen to develop in, be sure to book your place on our STEM day.

Who should come? Girls with a sense of curiosity for the world around them and who are keen to make an early start on developing skills in an increasingly important subject. We welcome both invidivual bookings and school cohorts.

What will you do? Involving both Science and Maths workshops, girls will work with highly qualified, enthusiastic and passionate members of Roedean’s Science and Maths departments to get a real flavour of the buzz surrounding these subjects at Roedean.

‘My daughter said it was ‘absolutely incredible – beyond words!’ and she just talked non-stop for hours about it. She loved so many things about it – including the ‘fantastic experiments,’ a brilliant talk in the newly refurbished theatre, visiting the goats at the Farm, and ‘the most exquisite mashed potato ever!’ Parent

England Hockey Experience Day This is a unique opportunity to attend a professional hockey masterclass led by an England Hockey player, training and playing on Roedean’s all-weather hockey pitch. Our last Hockey Experience saw us welcome to Roedean Kate Richardson-Walsh who was captain of the women’s England Hockey Squad for 13 years, captaining them to their first Olympic Gold Medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Who should come? Schools should send full hockey squads of girls or individual applicants with a passion for hockey.

What will you do? You will train on our fantastic all-weather hockey pitch and will establish and refine new skills in the morning. There will also be an opportunity to hear the player speak about her career to date, which will equally enthuse and inspire. In the afternoon, you will participate in a fun tournament.

What will you get from the day? A fantastic day, delivered by a professional, international player, you will learn new skills and hone your existing ones. This will be of particular interest to aspirational hockey players, and especially if you are considering a hockey scholarship at Roedean in the future.

‘My daughter had a wonderful time, and really enjoyed learning new skills from none other than Kate Richardson-Walsh - it was a real treat. She has come away more confident and with some new friends, and hasn’t stopped smiling.’ Parent

Discovery Day Discovery Day is one of the highlights of the year and is focused around themed academic activities.

Who should come? This day is open to registered girls for 11+ 2023 entry and 13+ 2023 entry and is the first formal admissions event. Girls following the early-entrance programme and who have already accepted their place are also encouraged to attend.

What will you do? You will take part in a day of exciting themed lesson-experiences. The girls take a Non-Verbal Reasoning test on this day, and also have a short group discussion.

Visual and Performing Arts Day BE BRAVE, BE BOLD... and you may discover hidden talents!

Who should come? This exciting day will be suitable both for the experienced performer/artist and the novice. The project will allow for all levels of experience and ability.

What will you do? You will participate in a carousel of creative workshops, culminating in a themed performance in our professional Roedean Theatre; last years’ theme was Matilda. The day will include Art, Dance, Drama and Music, and during the performance you will use the props you have created yourselves from the Art workshop. The day will include a technical and dress rehearsal, and your parents will be invited to watch the final 15-minute performance, where you will be able to showcase your efforts.

What will you get from the day? This day will be great fun and it will also allow you the opportunity to try something new, to learn new skills, and maybe to discover new interests and talents. Each of you will take part in the final performance which will be staged in our professionally-equipped theatre, with full lighting and sound designs to support your performance at the end of the day.

Literary Festival Experience Day Calling all book lovers! This event promises a day of inspirational literary activities hosted at Roedean – a magical setting that has inspired more than one story!

Who should come? Girls who love stories will enjoy bringing books to life during this jam-packed day. We would also welcome bookings from schools sending a cohort of girls.

What will you do? An exciting programme for this event includes author signings and Q&A sessions in Roedean’s impressive theatre, workshops, and activities across the School to get creative ideas flowing!

What will you get from the day? A unique opportunity to hear from published children’s and young adult’s authors, as well as take part in activities designed to spark creative ideas.

‘My daughter came home absolutely buzzing from the Literary Festival. She was particularly in awe of the speaker who advises Peter James from a Police perspective – fascinating!’ Parent

England Netball Experience Day A fantastic and exciting opportunity for you to attend a professional masterclass with an England superleague netballer. Last year, we were lucky enough to welcome ex-England Netball Captain, Pamela Cookey, to Roedean.

Who should come? Schools should send full netball squads of girls or individual applicants with a passion for netball.

What will you do? In the morning, teams will practise drills and skills, focusing on attack and defence. In the afternoon, there will be a fun tournament where teams will be able to put their coaching into practice. There will be an opportunity to ask questions, followed by a presentation of medals and a ball for the Player of the Tournament - parents are welcome to watch the tournament and attend the presentation on the courts.

What will you get from the day? You will hear about cutting edge tactics, delivered by a professional international player. This valuable experience will further develop your netball skills, especially if you are considering a netball scholarship at Roedean in the future.
