HEAD’S REVIEW
Head’s Introduction
We have come to the end of another amazing term – the entire Roedean community deserves to be congratulated on achieving so much! This term, two Netball teams have won the Sussex Cup, we have seen wonderful performances of Legally Blonde, together we have raised even more money for our school charities, students have been on tour to Iceland and Paris, we welcomed 22 inspiring speakers for International Women’s Day, our Year 13s have been awarded fantastic offers at a wide range of universities, and we marvelled at the stunning work of our Year 12 artists at their exhibition last week! And there has been so much more –congratulations to you all!
Our musicians have had a very successful few weeks – the fantastic ‘Waltzing Through Time’ Gala was not that long ago, but since then we have enjoyed a challenging yet inspiring Chamber Music Day and concert, and many of our musicians have performed with great success at the Springboard Competition and Hastings Festival. Particular congratulations go to Galina and Ella, who both won a number of cups and impressive accolades.
I hope that those on the Berlin Trip and those skiing in Austria have a brilliant time, and that Revision Week for the Year 11s and 13s is productive next week. It has been an amazing term, and I wish you all a lovely and restful holiday!

Academic Lectures –Spring Term
'During Academic Lectures this term, we have covered a range of topics from ‘Women in Art’ to ‘Language Code Breaking’, as well as ‘Expanding Moral Frameworks’. Many of these interesting lectures have been presented by students across all year groups. On International Women's Day, Academic Lectures featured a number of amazing student-led presentations about inspirational women. As an Academic Scholar, attending these lectures has helped broaden my interests in a range of different topics. My favourite lecture this term was about the Assassination of JFK (John F Kennedy) by Mrs Newman – it was fascinating to learn about the various conspiracy theories behind this huge political event.'

Hastings Festival and Springboard
Hot on the heels of Roedean students' successes last week in the first weekend of the Springboard Competition, Galina (Yr12) has had huge success in the Hastings Musical Festival, and others have won prizes in the second Springboard weekend.
Galina was awarded the Hastings festival’s highest accolade – the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Cup for outstanding achievement in the festival, and the Silver Jubilee Cup for the highest solo mark, which includes instrumental, singing, and dance.
Galina was also awarded cups for first place for Chopin over 16 in the piano section, early 20th Century Musical Theatre Singing (aged 13-18), and also 1st places for instrumental concerto (with a cash award) and 1st place in the Year 12 Show Song class.
Galina also performed the 1st movement of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Brighton and East Sussex Youth Orchestra at Eastbourne Town Hall, and she will be away with the National Youth Concert Band over Easter!
Brain Day
A Level Biology and Psychology students had the opportunity to welcome Doctor Guy Sutton to Roedean – he is one of the UK's leading neuroscientists and a much sought-after speaker.
Amongst other topics, our students listened to lectures on brain computer interfaces and mind reading, mental illness and crime, the neuroscience of climate change, end of life consciousness, and the effects of social media use on brain development.
Just before lunch, Dr Sutton dissected a sheep's brain and gave the students some 'hands on' experience of the process.
The day proved to be an enormous success and an invaluable aid to Year 13 students in particular, as they prepare for their final examinations.
Mr Harrison
In last weekend's Springboard Competition, Roedean students also enjoyed great successes:
■ Bernice (Yr11) won 1st place in the Sonata class (15-16 years)
■ Candis (Yr11) won 1st place in the Romantic class (15-16 years)
■ Hettie (Yr11) won 3rd place in 20th/21st Century (15-19 years)
■ Bernice and Candis (Yr11) won 1st place in the Duets on one piano class for students at Grade 7 and above
■ Hettie won the Doris Waymark 2 Cup, for the person showing best musical potential across all the senior piano classes
■ Bernice and Candis won the Lisa Childs Memorial Cup, awarded to the highest mark in piano duet classes
■ Zyta won second place in the Springboard Senior Championship Final
Well done!

Olivia Fussell Gives a Sustainability Talk
We were delighted on Monday to welcome OR Olivia Fussell (No. 2, 1969-71) back to Roedean for her first visit since she left!
Olivia now works in the field of sustainability, running a company that sells carbon credits and works on carbon offsetting projects in Africa and Scotland. During her visit, Olivia held an informal talk with a group of students about her career journey (from Architecture at London University, to a Masters at Harvard, before side-stepping into sustainability, and setting up her own company), and about the possibilities of working within the carbon credit market.
It was a really insightful conversation, with some excellent questions from the students.

Neurodiversity Week at Roedean
On Monday, students joined the Learning Support department to celebrate Neurodiversity week. Celebrations included a wishing tree where students wrote down what they wished or hoped to accomplish on a tag, and then hung them from the branches of our tree. We all enjoyed cakes and music. Everyone was also able to add to their badge collection with a special neurodiversity badge. It was lovely to see those from all year-groups together, interacting and sharing their wishes and ideas for the future.

Yr 12 History trip to Buckingham Palace
Last weekend, Year 12 Historians went up to London: 'We had a great time learning all about the Tudors at the 'Holbein at the Tudor Court' exhibition at Buckingham Palace on Sunday. It was particularly impactful to see the recently restored painting, Field of the Cloth of Gold, as it is such an important event from Henry VIII’s reign, and the detail was incredible. Afterwards, we went to Chinatown for some lunch and a spot of shopping – it was a brilliant day all round!'

Chamber Music Day and Concert
It was or great priviledge to welcome the Odysseus Trio to Roedean this week, to work with our chamber musicians and share their expertise. During the day, they spent time with nine different chamber ensembles, encouraging them to listen to and communicate with each other – this skill is perhaps even more important in a small ensemble than in a large orchestra. They were very impressed with the improvement our performers made, even in just 45 minutes.
At the end of the day, three of our ensembles had the opportunity to showcase their improved playing in front of an audience, and they performed brilliantly. The three ensembles were the following:
■ Theme from Jurassic Park – John Williams (arranged by Joe Lenihan)
Chloe, Claire, Meghan, Lilia, and Bernice (Flutes) – Years 10-11
■ Un poco largamente from Piano Quintet –Robert Schumann
Rachel and Anna (Violin), Candis (Viola), Sarah (Cello), and Zyta (Piano) – Years 10-11
■ Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp – Claude Debussy
Bernice (Flute), Candis (Viola), and Vanessa (Harp) – Year 11
After this, the Odysseus Trio performed Dvorak. Their playing was incredibly powerful, and the Roedean musicians were lucky to be so very close to the trio, seeing the power and expression of their playing – they were really impressed.
'The masterclass with the Odysseus Trio was incredibly insightful and uplifting. Their advice on musicianship came from genuine passion for music, inspiring us to become better musicians ourselves. Their performance at the evening with Dvorak's 'Dumky' Trio really showcased
A Performance 5 Years in the Waiting!
On Wednesday afternoon, Galina and Fleur in Year 12 led a whole school assembly at St Mark's Primary School. Leading the Year 5 Choir, they treated the whole school, including family and friends, to five songs from the musical 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'.
Galina first went to St Mark's as a Year 7, where she supported their music coordinator, Molly Livingston, teaching the students new music. Since then, both Galina and Fleur have maintained a lovely relationship with Molly and the school, but it wasn't until this year, as part of the their Year 12 CAP placement, that they were able to attend regularly and have her very own choir!
The assembly was the finale to their CAP placement. Since October Galina and Fleur have been attending every Wednesday, teaching the students how to sing as a choir. They have built wonderful rapport with the students and everyone involved has loved the singing lessons. The final performance was outstanding, with the audience clapping and dancing along. Well done to Galina and Fleur for truly inspiring the students at St Mark's and being model representatives for Roedean in our local community.

their togetherness and how they phrase each note as if they're telling a story in their colourful interpretation. Mentorship from professional musicians was a real gift and I am extremely thankful that I got to take part.' – Zyta (Yr10)
'I found the masterclass really helpful. I have rarely been instructed as a solo singer in a chamber group, so this masterclass was a great opportunity for me to learn more about playing communicatively and in sync. I also received some beneficial advice on the application of vibrato. This detailing is something I had paid little mind to until it was raised in the session. The class turned out to assist me further in my vocal training than I expected, since none of the professionals performed with voice, and I am so glad I decided to attend this workshop. It was truly inspiring.' – Niamh (Yr13)
It was a wonderful day of music-making, and our students will have benefited hugely from working so closely with professional musicians.

Spring Term Weekend Activities
This term has seen some exciting and 'out of this world' experiences for our boarders. There has been something for everyone, with annual trips such as Go Karting and Skiing, and the newly introduced VROOM, which saw students compete in a virtual race against each other in a professional motion simulator – it was very popular.
Somehow, the students also found time to volunteer at the Brighton Half Marathon one chilly morning – our intrepid helpers left School at 06:30 to support the iconic race!
Thank you to all the staff who have helped to support the trips this term. Look out for next term's more 'summer friendly' activities, including Zip wiring, Powerboating on the English Channel, and a trip to London's Chintown and the Eye!

Final BIP Art Trip of the Term
Over this term, Year 11s have been attending after-school and weekend art workshops at BIP Printmakers Studio in Kemptown.
As the term comes to an end, so do our printmaking sessions. Our students have been preparing etching plates and linos inspired by their chosen themes and artists. These are then transformed into prints at the studio using a range of inks and techniques.
A huge thank you goes to the BIP team for helping our artists to produce some outstanding quality prints – etchings, linoprints and monoprints.
Well done!

Year 7 Silent Disco
As an end of term treat, the Year 7s enjoyed a 'silent disco', which it was far from! With the singing bellowing all the way down the school corridor, it's safe to say they had a good time. The girls have worked incredibly hard this year, with many already saying they don't want Year 7 to end! Well done for another great term Year 7.

First Sea Lanes Session for our keen Channel Sea Swimmers!
On Thursday, 11 of our keen sea swimmers took part in a before-school swimming session at Sea Lanes Brighton, in their 50m outdoor pool. It is a good in-between step for them, at a balmy 19 degrees Celsius. But this is much colder than the 29 degrees they are used to in the Roedean pool, but not as chilly as the sea, which is currently around 9 degrees.
Despite the colder water, the girls worked extremely hard and completed an endurancebased swimming set, to help prepare them for getting into the sea next term. It was a beautiful, fresh morning, with a stunning sunrise, so it felt like a real pleasure to be there. Well done to all those who braved the cold and got stuck in – Ms Marek and I are already looking forward to next week's session!

Netball Review
This netball term, it has been amazing to see so many of you out there regularly competing and seeing how much progress you have made in such a short space of time. With 210 fixtures played, there is so much to celebrate, from the fact we scored 3430 goals as a school or that 320 of you represented Roedean out on the courts. The list of highlights could go on, but I have put a short list below:
■ our U16A came 4th in the South of England
■ the U12A got into the final 8 teams in the National Plate competition
■ the U12D were undefeated all season
■ U15A & U12A were Sussex Cup champions
A huge thank you goes to all of you who have contributed to netball term, both players and parents. We already can't wait to see all you can achieve in Netball term 2025!

Maddie Flying into the Nationals Finals
Last weekend, Maddie (Yr7) played county hockey for Sussex, and she has done brilliantly –here are her reflections:
'On Sunday 17 March, I played in the regional Surrey County hockey for the under 12A team at my hockey club. We went into the tournament knowing that we would have to play our best hockey if we wanted to win. In the first match, we had a good start scoring a goal in the first 4 minutes of the game. This came in handy, as the result in the end was 1-0 to us. We proceeded to keep up that momentum, winning the next match against Woking HC 2-0. We won the next one 3-1, and the next 2-1. We were now through to the finals! We were originally meant to play our U12B team, but the rules said otherwise. So, we played Woking HC once again – we scored the first goal quickly, but then Woking began to gain possession. But that didn't stop us. In the last minute, one of my teammates put the ball on a foot in the D, creating a short corner. I was at the top of the D receiving the ball, and, when I did, I scored a goal! And that is how my team made it through to nationals!'
Congratulations, Maddie!
Mr Perry
U18 Sussex Tennis for Mia
Last week, Mia in Year 11 travelled on a 350mile road trip to Sunderland in the North East to represent the U18 Sussex Tennis team. Incredibly, she qualified for the team two years early, usually playing in her own U16 age group county team.
Mia qualified early due to the fact she ranks in the top 6 players in the U18 age group, and is top 2 within her age-group. The competition was the National Cup Division 3, where the Sussex team was playing against Northumberland, Staffordshire, and Cambridgeshire. The competition was an important one, as the results had the potential to see the team either promoted or relegated.
Mia played three matches in the singles competition, winning one and losing two. Overall, Sussex placed third in the table, but, more importantly, retained Division 3 status for next year. Mia has the U16 county cup competition coming up in Surbiton later in the year, and she is working on getting into National tournament events, which are for the best junior players in the UK. We look forward to hearing how she gets on in the summer.

This Week in Boarding...
House 1 got ready for Easter by decorating chocolate Easter eggs with an array of edible wafer flowers and colourful sprinkles. An Easter egg hunt was truly the highlight of the week, with a house-wide search for little colourful eggs hidden all around, and a special Golden Egg for whoever found the most!
House 2 enjoyed a competitive game of Bingo this week, and lots of Easter treats have been consumed – this included a Biscoff cheescake, and one of Mrs Burns' classic bakes, with a special Springthemed twist!
House 3 have had a jam-packed week, with birthdays to celebrate, fine dining experiences, and homemade smoothie bowls! Easter was not forgotten though, with chocolate bunny bark and even the addition of a small tree to make the place look ready for Spring! Year 7 boarders also got their hands on some sparkly gems and took to making eveything in their sight shine – including the fruit!
House 4 celebrated National Barbie Day with a viewing of the movie that took the world by storm last year, accompanied by some yummy, and, of course pink, sweeties! The girls also celebrated National Panda Day by watching Kung Fu Panda, and creating some friendly panda marshmallows with edible cake pens. They were in the mood for Spring, baking a delicious chocolate cake, topped with mini eggs in a lovely flower! On International Evening, one of House 4's boarders held a mini masterclass in the art of making German pretzels. To acknowledge National Happiness Day, all the boarders were treated to a little happy biscuit!
We hope the activities that our boarders have undertaken to mark Easter might inspire you to try your own, whether it is baking an Easter-themed cake, or hosting an Easter egg hunt. We wish you all a lovely Easter holiday, and we look forward to more fun activites in the Summer Term!

Netball vs Sevenoaks
U14E
The U14E team faced Sevenoaks in this week's netball block. The quarter didn’t kick off strongly. as we were down a player and had to borrow from the opposition.
At quarter time, the score was 1-3 to Sevenoaks. The team was working hard to move the ball down the court, but we struggled just before the D, and then lost out on the opportunity of shooting.
By half-time, we made a few changes to mix up the dynamic and see if that would help us to get some points. Sevenoaks had some very strong players, including their GD who turned over ball at least 80% of the time she was on the court.
All the Roedean players worked hard until the whistle blew for full time, ending with a 5-17 goal loss.
Miss Walsh
U14D
In a thrilling match, the U14D team played their final fixture of the term versus a very strong Sevenoaks side. With a full strength team, the squad was very excited for the last game of the term, after back-to-back matches versus Mayfield and Lancing respectively.
In the first quarter, the team started slowly, with too many mistakes, and we missed placed passes, resulting in a losing scoreline at the first quarter break. The remaining three quarters were the best netball of the term, with great netball being displayed in defence and attack. The final quarter highlighted this incredible level of play, which we won 11-2.
U15E Victorious
The U15Es put out a brilliant performance for their final fixture versus Sevenoaks.
It started off very close, with the first quarter finishing 1-1. After the first quarter, we found our rhythm as a team – there were some new combinations in the team, with Eva from Year 8 stepping in to cover illness. We then stormed the second quarter, leading 8-1 at half-time. The whole squad worked together effectively to apply pressure to the opposition, which allowed us to make multiple turnovers and then, with some excellent pace and communication, we drove the ball through court well.
The final score was 15-6 to Roedean. It was a brilliant game of netball from all – well done. Special mention goes to Chloe and Sophie, who were named Opposition's Players, and Victoria, for being Coach’s Player. Thank you for all your hard work this season.
Miss Hammond
U15B
In their last game of the season, the girls were raring to face Sevenoaks, after seeing a narrow loss last season. With a strong team of 8 versatile players, the squad stepped up to the challenge. The final whistle went with a 30-15 win on the boards, keeping our competitors down to only half our score. Well done for a great season!
Miss Bamford
The final score was 27-19. A great term of netball was rounded off in this game.
Stats for the term: 4 games, 3 wins, 1 loss, and a goal difference of +58 – well done!

Netball vs Sevenoaks
U15D
On Saturday, the U15D team played Sevenoaks in their final game of the season. Due to player illness, the team was down to just 7 players and, with a very tall opposition, were in for a tough game.
The team started well, looking much more controlled with the ball in hand, but the opposition was able to capitalise on more of their shooting opportunities and we were 0-5 down at half-time. With a few changes of position and some talk about controlling the play, the team came out firing. We still struggled to get the ball past their very tall circle defenders, but managed far more turnovers in defence, thanks to Athena, Rosa, and Charlotte.
With the score 3-12 after three quarters, the girls talked about tactics and how they could be more positive in getting the ball into the shooters. Poppy and Nathalia worked hard in driving the ball down the court, and Audrey and Sonia managed to link play brilliantly to put 4 more goals past the opposition, leaving the final score at 7-14. The player of the match was Poppy, for her excellent efforts in the centre court.
Miss Kirby-Jones
U18B's Last Netball Match of the Season!
On Saturday, the U18B team had their last match of the season away against Sevenoaks. It was a beautiful day, and the team came onto court pumped and raring to go.
The game itself was a tough one, with Sevenoaks proving a speedy and agile team. The Roedean squad worked hard to get interceptions, and Holly and Onose did well to hold Sevenoaks out of the D as much as possible, but unfortunately the game ended in defeat.
Despite the loss, the team really came together and kept up the energy the whole way through. Mbali (Yr12), who played brilliantly in the first two quarters and unfortunately came off injured shortly into the third quarter, kept morale high with her encouragement from the sidelines. She and Ellie (Yr12) were selected as Attacking and Defending Players of the Match, both of which were very well deserved. Zara made some great interceptions, and Mila and Tallulah made some amazing shots, despite strong pressure from the opposition. Liv and Gabi also put in a great stint in centre court, working hard at their Stage 1 and 2 defence.
Overall, it has been an absolute pleasure taking the U18Bs for Netball this term. They have worked extremely hard in training, and come to every game with brilliant energy and enthusiasm, with a strong team chant to match. Well done all, you have been amazing!

U18A vs Sevenoaks 1sts
This was always going to be an emotional match, as it was the last match for the Year 13 players in the team – Amelia, Lila, Erin, and Maria. They went out fighting as always, and it was a great last match. Sevenoaks was a formidable team, and they were very skilful and had a different style to our recent few matches. They loved to do a big ball all the way through the court, and were particularly good at doing a big pass into the GS under the post. This meant we needed to try and keep up with them down the court, which was not an easy feat. Our first quarter was one that we were happy to forget, as they went up 15-5, so we knew we needed to change a few things to catch back up.
However, the changes we made did make a difference, and we started to slow them down and make it harder in the second quarter. Lila at GD was doing her usual brilliant flying interceptions in the goal third. Solari at GK was marking tightly to her GS and springing up just at the right moment to tip the ball out. Maria at WD was driving through the gaps and in front of their player, to offer a mid-court option and always providing a back-up pass. Amelia (C) and Elodie (WA) were working as a unit in the goal third, passing the ball around until they saw a chance to pass into our shooters.
Their defence were very tight, so our shooters, Erin and Alice, had to work the ball in and out to get a chance. Their shooting accuracy was amazing, and they missed hardly any. The score at the end of the second quarter was 24-10. We carried on through the 3rd quarter with the aim of trying to keep within half of their score, and it was a really positive quarter – we were delaying the ball into the shooters and really slowing their game down. We almost stayed within half of their score, but we got a bit scatty at the end of the quarter, and the score to them was 33-14.
We didn’t care that we were behind – we were still aiming for that half score in the last quarter and we kept it close. This was actually our best scoring quarter, but they had really got into their groove and were shooting machines, and they won 46-21. We felt positive though, and we had fun – that was the aim of this game. What a dream team they have been this season!
■ Player of the Match – Amelia
■ Coach’s Player – Alice
■ Highlight of the Match – Lila’s flying interceptions!

U15 Netball Sussex Cup Winners U16s Are Runners-Up in the Sussex Cup
At the end of a busy Wednesday, the U15s took to the court to play Brighton College in the Sussex Cup final. We dominated the game against their B team, which was an excellent way to end the season.
With 9 players, we were able to mix the positions around and allow everyone a fair amount of
court time. The final score was an incredible 67-3 win for Roedean. Well played everyone, and a big thank you goes to the parents who come to watch and support each week.

Staff-Student Netball
(staff won again… both matches…)
Last Wednesday, our U16s competed in the Sussex Cup Finals. It was a very tightly contested game and could have gone either way. Both teams brought intensity, physicality, and dynamic speed, so it was a fantastic game of netball to watch.
Hurst managed to creep ahead by a couple of goals early, but we kept them close. With 5 minutes to go, we got the turnover needed to bring the score line closer, but, unfortunately, errors snuck in and they managed to get a turnover themselves and then get on a roll until the final whistle. The final score was 26-30 to Hurst.
The squad should be very proud of the performances they put out, not just last Wednesday but all season. They have been a joy to coach and the progress made has been immense. Thank you for all your hard work, and best of luck with your exams!
