Head’s Introduction At the start of the new academic year, it has been wonderful to welcome the students to Roedean over the last couple of days – there is certainly an air of excitement and anticipation for what the new school year will bring. Many students are returning after the summer, but a good number are also joining the School this year, and I am sure that they will quickly become part of our community. While the students have been away, I am very grateful to the many members of support staff who have worked throughout the summer to get the School ready for the start of term – thank you!  After two very disrupted years as a result of Covid, it is heartening to be able to report that the Year 13 and 11 girls from last year both achieved the School’s highest ever results in examined A Levels and GCSEs – 71% A*-A at A Level, alongside 85.3% at 9-7 at GCSE. As well as congratulating the students, I would like to thank my colleagues along with their parents and guardians, who have supported them throughout this rocky journey. Our thanks extend to everyone the students meet on a daily basis, such as their House staff, the minibus drivers, our domestic and catering teams, the School Office staff, their tutors, those running co-curricular activities and events, and many more besides. There is no doubt that the strength of our community provided great support when needed. While the numbers and percentages are impressive and the girls have enjoyed well-deserved recognition of their outstanding achievements in the national and local press, it is the individual stories which remind us what the girls have been through and how well they have done.  In so many ways, it is clear that Roedean is going from strength to strength, and the entire School community deserves to be very proud, especially as there are now over 710 students in the School. In other news, we have been shortlisted in four categories for national school awards (Independent Girls' School of the Year, Independent School of the Year for Sporting Achievement, Indepedendent School of the Year for Performing Arts, and Independent School of the Year for Community Outreach), and the students continue to achieve highly across a range of activities. And all of this as we go into the year when Roedean celebrates 125 years on the current site – I am looking forward to an exciting year ahead, and I wish you all the best of luck!

Congratulations – what a brilliant achievement! Miss Kirby-Jones British Showjumping Championship Success!

Congratulations to Jasmine (Yr9), who has been very busy over the summer break with her horse shows, working hard and running up and down the country to compete in major shows! All of this has been worthwhile, and Jasmine placed 4th individually in her first British Showjumping National Championship! This achievment is all the more impressive, because, even though she is just 13, she is mainly competing against adults in this category!

Summer Cricketing Success

Roedean could not be prouder of Jasmine, and these photos show her lap of honour, after being presented with her well-deserved rosette!  She also qualified for “Children On Horses Grand Prix” in an upcoming September show, and we all wish her the best of luck!  Mrs Shrubsole

It has been a successful summer of cricket for some of the Roedean girls who play at Brighton and Hove Cricket Club. The U13, U15, and U17 teams at the club all won their leagues, and the U13s and U15s won the Sussex League Finals, to put them through the regional finals at Wimbledon. A special mention must go to Grace (Yr10) who took 7 wickets to take the team to victory in their Sussex final. These teams included the following Roedean players: Harriet, Gabby, Tessa, and Izzy for the U13s, and Grace, Mia, Maya, Lydia, and Tilly for U15.

Roedean is celebrating national recognition in the prestigious Independent Schools of the Year awards for 2022, which acknowledge excellence across twenty-two different categories – competition for these awards is always fierce, so we are delighted that the School is on the shortlist for four: Independent School of the Year for Performing Arts (Music and Drama) Independent School of the Year for Sporting Achievement Independent School of the Year for Community Outreach Independent Girls’ School of the Year Given the challenging context in education at the current time, as we negotiate our way back to normality after Covid, it is wonderful to be on these shortlists, for awards which celebrate remarkable breadth of opportunity and holistic approach in independent schools. We are hugely proud of the entire school community, and look forward to the list of finalists being announced on 7 September.
