Chinese New Year at Roedean
Head’s Introduction
It has been wonderful this week to share events and activities with those in our community celebrating Chinese New Year – the Year of the Tiger! The School has been adorned with papercuts, red lanterns, and images of tigers, and it was lovely to see our students from China and Hong Kong sharing aspects of their culture. I am pleased that many girls and staff tried their hand at some traditional crafts in the Library on Tuesday. The fantastic fireworks at the end of the day were enjoyed by many from the front of School, and there was even a projected dragon rushing across Roedean’s iconic facade. Thank you to everyone who was involved in making the this week so special. This week, Roedean hosted fifty prospective students at our Visual and Performing Arts Day. The girls had a great day, with workshops in Art, Dance, Drama, and Music, and the final piece they produced, combining all the different elements, was excellent. We have received wonderful feedback from those taking part, so congratulations to the Admissions Department for a very successful event and to our staff in the Arts departments who have been so engaged and creative in developing the activities. Well done to our GCSE Drama students who performed their monologues and duologues in the Theatre yesterday – the recording is sent to the examiners so the pressure was on, but our actors all did brilliantly, performing their pieces with assured confidence and great emotion. Well done! In the Music Department, last Friday saw Samba workshops for all of a Year 7, along with the Year 5s from St Mark’s. They all had a brilliant time, and picked up the syncopated rhythms quickly. On Tuesday, a number of our musicians performed in the Teatime Recital, along with Ellie and Eileen, who played traditional Chinese instruments. It was a varied and enjoyable concert, with a supportive and appreciative audience. Well done to everyone involved. Well done to Mollie in Year 10, who has been named Junior Captain of the Mid Sussex Marlins, one of the top swimming clubs in the area; this is a great achievement, so congratulations. There have also been lots of fixtures this week, and I am pleased to see that our teams are making good progress as we move through the Netball season. Particular congratulations go to the U13As, who are through to the quarter finals of the National Finals, and to the U15As, who have progressed to the third round of the Sussex Cup. I wish you all a great weekend, and good luck for next week!

Art Trip to the Pier As part of their A Level Art, Photography, and Textiles courses, Year 12 artists took some time off site on Tuesday afternoon to be inspired by the different aspects of the pier and surrounding coast. They took lots of photographs, made some sketches in situ, and they will be using this material to develop work for their 'Light
and Space' project over the coming weeks. It was bitterly cold, but bright and sunny, and we enjoyed warming up with hot chocolate and biscuits on our return to the Art Studio. Mrs Alexander Page 2

First World War Living History Talk On Monday, we were lucky to have an expert come to talk to the Year 10 GCSE historians, about the Western Front and the approaches made towards the prevention and treatments of illnesses throughout the First World War. 'Dickie' provided us with lots of detailed contextual knowledge for the topic of Medicine on the Western Front, as well as including a life-like demonstration of the role of stretcher bearers, and how the newly invented 'Thomas Splints' were put on. We were also shown, as part of a demonstration with student participation, the different types of gas masks used throughout the war Overall, along with the opportunity to ask plenty of questions, we learnt lots about the changes in medicine during World War One, giving us a greater understanding of its role in the war. Flora (Yr10)
Samba Day for Year 7! Last Friday, all the Year 7s and a group from St Mark's took part in a fantastic Samba drumming workshop. Each group learnt how to play Samba rhythms on the Surdo, Tamborim, Agogo, and Repique. They also learnt body percussion and gave a wonderful performance at the end of the day to some of the Year 8s. Thank you to all those who helped out and supported, and thank you to Ollie and the team at The Beat Goes On. Ms Bartlette

Chinese New Year at Roedean 新年快乐! It was wonderful to be able to celebrate Chinese New Year at Roedean on Tuesday. On the evening before, the girls in Keswick enjoyed some Chinese take-away in Keswick Hall, while watching the Spring Festival Gala from Beijing on the big screen. Not only has it been Chinese New Year, but 4 February, today, marks the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, making it the only city which has held both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Tuesday saw girls and staff wearing something red, as it is the most auspicious colour in Chinese culture, people greeting each other in the corridors in Mandarin and Cantonese, and some fantastic activities in the Library at lunchtime – Eileen, Rita, and Juliet helped with traditional paper-cutting, alongside Mrs Wu, our Chinese teacher. And Betty wowwed everyone with her stunning calligraphy with brush and ink – she has been learning how to write in this way for nine years, and it was stunning to watch her produce such beautiful messages.
And then there were the fireworks, and the facade of the School lit up and featuring a moving dragon! Well done to Mr Wailes, Mr Carpenter, and all of the Theatre and IT teams – what a great show!
Also, before and after the Teatime Recital, Ellie and Eileen (Yr10) performed beautifully on the erhu and guzheng, given the audience a wonderful insight into these lovely traditional Chinese instruments.
Thank you to everyone, but especially Rita and Eileen (Yr13), who was involved in making Chinese New Year at Roedean a special day! Dr Barrand

Teatime Recital Tuesday’s teatime recital was another spectacular event, with a wonderful selection of performers, some of whom were performing in public for the first time. The repertoire ranged from Rutter and Brahms to Kelly Clarkson and Einaudi. The performers introduced their pieces with confidence, played musically, and accepted the generous applause graciously. Well done to you all. To celebrate Chinese New Year, it was wonderful that, before and after the recital, we were treated to some beautiful Chinese music played on the Guzheng and Erhu by Eileen and Ellie (Yr10). Thank you.
The support from fellow students at these events is really phenomenal, and I would like to thank every student and teacher who offers their support, especially Mr Halsey, who is now officially a Music Department groupie. Thank you to the catering team for the most amazing musical brownies, to the Theatre and IT teams and the Housemen, for helping to set the scene, and to Mr Wilson for his musical accompanying. Thank you also to all those who provided a wonderful fireworks display afterwards. The next Teatime Recital will be on 22 February. Ms Bartlette
GCSE Drama Performances On Thursday afternoon, the Year 11 Drama GCSE students performed monologues and duologues to their Year 10 Drama counterparts for their final practical assessment. The students portrayed a range of characters, including the confident female pilot Renne, from The Astronauts Chair, who in the 1940s trained with NASA, to the caring and generous character of Miss Johnstone from Blood Brothers, who tries to refuse Mrs Lyons’ attempts to bribe her but fails to keep her baby. There were a range of emotions conveyed, as the topics of the pieces ranged from loss, ambition, and identity. It was a great opportunity for the Year 11 students to use the newly refurbished Theatre and to explore contemporary playwrights, while for the Year 10s it was an introduction to the material that they may wish to explore when they take their assessment next year. Well done to the Year 11s for their hard work, determination, and focus! Mrs Woodbridge

Visual and Performing Arts Day This week, we welcomed 50 pupils to our Admissions event focusing on the Visual and Performing Arts. Our visitors had a wonderful time, working on Art, Dance, Drama, and Music, and their final performance was the best we have seen for years! Here is some of the wonderful feedback we have received: Thank you so much to everyone who was involved in today, staff and students alike. Livvy had the best day; she was so animated and energised on the way home and kept saying that she just wished she could do it again. I was so impressed by the calibre of the performance achieved with just a few hours of rehearsal, true testament to how amazing each of the teachers are. The sense of ensemble amongst the girls was also so lovely to see and their energy was infectious. I don't think that I've stopped smiling this evening and Livvy keeps singing. What a wonderful experience that was for all the children involved in today's Performing Arts enrichment day! Jemima says that she really enjoyed every second of it and loves that the teachers and some of the pupils who gave up their time for the girls. She already can't wait for her next day at Roedean! It's lovely seeing new friendships start to blossom as she comes across girls she has met at previous events she's attended throughout the year. There is a certain magic that occurs at Roedean, between the girls, the staff, and the location. Faith is currently driving home with her Daddy in the car, and, considering she has been up since 5am, they are both full of delight and energy from this amazing performance day. I can't wait to hear more from them when they get home. Can I just say, a huge, huge thank you to you and the staff at Roedean for being so welcoming and encouraging of Faith, today and at every step of this process. You are certainly giving her the platform to create a vision of how she can be a girl at Roedean and how she will fit into such a wonderful environment to learn and grow in. As parents we feel extremely and completely grateful for every aspect of experience we've had with Roedean School; online meetings, meeting Mr Blond, experience days, scholarship processes, etc, Open Days. It has been quite a journey. Roedean have set the bar at a completely different level; inspiring vision, enthusiasm and confidence in our daughter along with a friendly smile and welcoming feel from every single person she has connected with. Black History Month – USA February is Black History Month in America, so we thought that this would be a good opportunity to reflect on what Black History has meant to us and our community. During October, a group of pupils were inspired by the events, activities, and talks on the UK Black History Month theme 'Proud To Be', and have produced this powerful and thought provoking poem, exploring their experiences and thoughts: Say my name. Refusing to say it at all, because it's 'hard’, isn't good enough. Our names are not just tags of random letters jumbled together, Rather, they tell stories about the magnificence of Africa’s values and traditions.

U13As in the Quarter Finals of the National Plate The U13As travelled up to Wallington High School to play the third round of the National Plate competition. Roedean started extremely strong, finishing 11-0 after the first quarter. With some phenomenal defending from Ruby, Gabi D, and Elsa, Roedean continued to build on this score line in the second quarter. They settled into the game, and we were able to try out some new combinations, which the girls transitioned into seamlessly. The final score was 38-12 to Roedean. Congratulations to the whole squad for securing a spot in the quarter finals, joining our U15s. Well done to Minnie for being awarded Oppositions' Player, with excellent versatility shown. We're all looking forward to the next round! Miss Hammond
Please do not touch my hair. My boho box braids, HD lace, stitch cornrows, or waves. I can't guarantee that my slick back bun will be bone straight, or that my edges will always be laid, but I try my best every day to make sure that my hair is tidy enough so as to avoid complaints.
We black girls are not all the same, though we all aspire to bring forth some kind of change. Whether that be medical, social, technological or cultural. Some of us want to travel the world, work in real estate, be an engineer, have our work published, or perform on the stage. Either way, we want to become the woman of our dreams, so that worldwide others can say 'I want to be just like her someday!' Hence why I am proud to be, a young black woman finding my feet. Because I have the chance to choose, how the future will be for other young girls that look just like me. So don't be surprised if I fight for every opportunity to refocus, on our retelling of black history.
Netball vs Hurst U12E
The U12E team had a good first game of the season against Hurst. They stormed ahead in the first quarter 7-1 up, with some impressive shooting from Polly and Molly. We then rotated through the different positions, attempting to get some experience in gameplay. All three quarters to follow were a little tighter, but the girls never looked to lose the control of the game. The girls defended really through Lily and Millie, and were also extremely good at turning over the ball in the defensive third. It was a thoroughly enjoyable match that ended 14-3 to Roedean. Mr Campleman
U13D
U13A
The U13D team won an end-toend game 10-9 against Hurst. The match was nip and tuck throughout: the first quarter ended 2-2, then Roedean took the second quarter 3-0 to lead 5-2 at half time. The end of the third quarter was 8-4 to Roedean, but Hurst then staged a terrific comeback; they looked like they may snatch a draw or even win, but Roedean held on to win 10-9. Lexi scored regularly throughout the game, Rhea was excellent in defence, and Bea moved the ball well down the court. Mr Smethurst

U15A into Round 3 of the Sussex Cup! The U15A Netball team travelled to Burgess Hill Girls in round 2 of the Sussex Cup on Tuesday. This was their first battle against BHG since 2020. The girls struggled in the first quarter, only taking the lead 8-5. They switched on the gas for the second quarter, scoring 12-4, putting the team in a much more comfortable position. The final whistle went, with 38-23 on the boards, and the team confidently secured their spot in round 3. Coaches' Player of the Match went to Ruby for her defensive pressure through court, and her determination to support the team in their victory. Into round 3 for the talented U15As but, first, can they retain their SISNA gold medals from 2020? Miss Bamford U15A

U16B vs Ardingly U18B
The U14As took on Ardingly in a nail-biting match at the weekend. The girls got off to a flying start, holding the lead all the way through the game. It went down to the final quarter, where the game was end-to-end and goal-for-goal. The final whistle went and, with a slight goal dispute, the game ended 19-19. The girls played a physical and competitive game, defending excellently through the court. Hopefully the U14s can hold off Ardingly at SISNA on Tuesday! Miss Bamford
The U14Bs took on Ardingly on a particularly windy Saturday. It was a fiercely competitive game, in which Ardingly started strongly. The girls were able to identify what they needed to work on after the first quarter and continued to go from strength to strength during the match. The team maintained high intensity and competitiveness throughout the fixture, and the quarter ended 12-9. The defence excelled during the 2nd and 3rd quarters, managing to deny many of Ardingly's opportunities. The attacking unit managed to score 6 goals during the 3rd quarter, meaning that the final quarter was all to play for. Unfortunately for the girls, Ardingly were able to maintain the lead, resulting in the final score being 16-12. Special mention goes to Evie, Tilly, Fen, Mia, and Lydia, for their continual high effort throughout the match, and maintaining good composure against a strong Ardingly side. Mr Alexander-Buckley It was a super competitive match last weekend against Ardingly. Roedean started slowly and, although they fought back after the first five minutes, we came off at quarter time down by 4. The girls' performance only went up from here and, despite being nervous about it being slightly slippery, they showed grit and determination for the next 3 quarters. There was amazing strength in defence from Izzy, and patient play from Tia saw Roedean go into the last quarter down by just 1. With it all to play for in the final 12 minutes, the girls pushed on. Roedean made the crucial turnover early in the quarter, meaning they were level. The game went right down to the final whistle and the final score was 28-28. Well done to all the players for an excellent game of Netball. Miss Hammond
The U15s played against Ardingly on Saturday for the first time since 2020. The squad was carrying some illness and some of the B team players were pulled up to play. The score after the first quarter was 14-3, allowing the team to settle into the game and try different combinations. The final whistle went with a 35-19 score line, with Roedean taking the win in each quarter. Each player who took to the court made a great impact and should be proud of another great performance on the netball courts. Miss Bamford
The U15B hosted Ardingly on Saturday. This was a very competitive fixture, with both teams flying around the court. Liv and Alya rotated in every quarter in centre court, due to their work rate during the game. Lucy and Alice held their nerve in the shooting circle against a physical goalkeeper and goal defense, who were piling on the pressure. With Ardingly’s speed and agility, it took some great composure and team work from Solari and Maddie to hold strong in defense, getting a number of turn overs. In the latter parts of the game with pressure and fatigue starting to show, the Soars twin came into their own, motivating the team and showing a huge amount of grit. The final score was 19-9 to Roedean, with Girl of the Game going to Maddie. Mr Borsoi
The U16B team had a very tough fixture against Ardingly's 2nd team. The game was fast-paced at the start, and it took a while before we could get up to speed. We needed to keep possession and disrupt theirs. After the first quarter, we were 10-1 down and we seemed to end the quarter better. The second quarter didn't go our way – we struggled to follow our markers and were rushed in possession, meaning we gave a lot of possession away. We clawed it back in the third quarter, and, with a determined final quarter, we managed to score 6 points with some respectable attacking play and long-range shooting by Dawn. The game ended 42-7, but the girls focused on the things they could improve against very good opposition. Nia was thoroughly deservng Player of the Match, and she stepped into the centre position mid-game and threw herself around the court admirably. Mr Campleman

Netball vs Seaford U13B
The U13B team had another good game this week against Seaford. This week, saw us try some new rotations and saw the girls play in some different positions. We started strongly, with a 12-4 first half. Isobel and Isabelle continued their great shooting streaks, Lola was a good addition in the shooting circle, as both an attacker and a defender. The mid court continued to work hard and had some great passages of play. Special mention should go to Lalya and Aimee (coaches MVP) whose work in defence made scoring very difficult for the opposition. Alicia was awarded Players' MVP for her hard work in the centre court. The final score was a 20-11 win. Miss Kirby-Jones
U13C
The U13Cs hosted Seaford College in their firth fixture of the year. Roedean started slowly. with the girls struggling to get the ball down the court. Despite this, they worked hard and, with some great shooting from Megs, managed to stay in the game. Throughout the game, the normal formidable defence of Alice, Jasmine, Poppy, and Isabella held strong with some very impressive marking. From this solid defensive foundation, Roedean players started to clear the space, which allowed Issy, Romey, and Asmitha to drive forward. The final score was 19-6, and Girl of the Game went to Megs. Mr Borsoi
U13B
U13F vs Seaford U13D
The girls took on Seaford U13D, and this game was very close throughout. It started with Roedean scoring an early goal, and our defence was able to stop Seaford scoring any goals in the entire 1st quarter. However, during the 2nd quarter, Seaford was able to overcome the defence and score. But the Roedean attack was able to replicate their success in 2nd quarter, maintaining their lead. During the 3rd quarter, Seaford changed their formation, which enabled them to take the lead and end the quarter 4-2 up. The girls met at the end of the 3rd quarter and quickly identified how they could take back the lead from Seaford, identifying that communication and closer marking would keep the pressure on the Seaford defence. This led the girls to a dominating 4th quarter display, and Roedean took the lead and won the game. This final quarter was a huge testament to the girls' desire and commitment to overcome the pressure that Seaford had put on them during the 3rd quarter. Well done to all the girls who played.
