HEAD’S

WEEKLY REVIEW

Storm Eleanor causing waves as high as the cliffs

Head’s Introduction Happy New Year, and welcome back to Roedean in 2018! We will be celebrating a number of centenaries and key anniversaries this year, but, given the School’s history and founders, the centenary of women first having the right to vote in 1918 and the start of female suffrage in the UK is very important. I can hardly imagine how proud our founding Lawrence sisters would have felt at the country achieving that milestone. We will celebrate this centenary when we mark International Women’s Day later this term in March. Welcome to the six students who joined Roedean this term – I know that everyone will make Jenny, Shirley, Ashley, and Gabriella in Year 9, and Charlotte and Genevieve in Year 10 very welcome and that they will quickly feel part of the Roedean community. Welcome also to two new members of staff – Miss Sparkes joins the PE department and Mrs Hammond will be part of the EAL department. Although there has been snow in many parts of the country over the holidays, and this term at Roedean has started with cold and windy weather, I am sure that seeing snow in New York must have been a wonderful experience for the party of twenty who were there at the end of last term. I am pleased to hear that the cultural tour was a great success and that the students and staff had a wonderful time. Work has continued over the Christmas holidays on the all-weather pitch, and I am sure that many of you are as excited as I am to see that the floodlights have appeared at the top of the posts – it won’t be too long before we have our astro! I wish you all the very best for a wonderful Easter term, but good luck in particular to Year 13 who have their trial exams next week.

Roedean Festival Celebrating Women on International Women’s Day Roedean will be hosting a festival on 8 March 2018 to mark International Women’s Day. We are keen to have a balance of speakers on a variety of topics – if you have any suggestions of personal contacts who might be interested in contributing to this day, please contact Dr Barrand on rb@roedean.co.uk

Netball U12 Netball vs Brighton College

In true Roedean style, the strong windy weather stayed around for the opening of the Netball term and our opening fixtures against Brighton College. The conditions really were extraordinary, with the shooters having to battle the cross winds as they attempted to shoot – sometimes the ball acted like a boomerang in the wind! But despite all this, the girls battled hard and enjoyed a very close game with Brighton College. We lost 4 – 6, but the score really could have gone either way. Amelia, Ava, and Amy

linked some beautiful play in attack, ensuring they made short sharp passes as instructed and there was some beautiful defensive play from Isabella. The Player of the Match was Ava L. Congratulations to the U12Bs, who won a close game 3 – 2. The team played a fun match, working hard to move the ball down the court, despite the crazy weather conditions, and they were very encouraging of each other. There is lots of potential for such a young team!

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

Unsung heroes in the spotlight Each week, many wonderful things happen at Roedean, about which many in the school are perhaps unaware; this section of the weekly review is dedicated to ‘unsung heroes’, in order to draw our attention to these people and remind us that our community is special. Dr Del Campo to be published! Congratulations to Dr Del Campo, who has won the 2017 Peter Lang Young Scholars’ Competition in Irish Studies. The announcement was made on 14 December 2017, after she signed a book contract with them to publish her doctoral thesis, entitled ‘Alternative Ulsters: Troubles Short Fiction by Women Writers, 1968-1998’. Peter Lang is one of the most prestigious publishing houses for academic books at an international level, particularly in her field, so this is a huge achievement!

New York At the end of last term, seventeen students from Years 11 to 13 and three members of staff spent five days in New York. The cultural tour was a wonderful experience, made even better when the snow arrived – can there be anything more amazing than New York in the snow? When the group went to Central Park, it had already snowed, and seeing the beautiful sunshine on the snow made it the most idyllic experience. The excursions included visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, a walking tour of Page 2

Wall Street, lots of shopping on 5th Avenue, ice-skating, going up the Empire State Building at night to look down on Manhattan, and a very moving visit to the 9/11 Memorial. Another highlight was seeing Chicago on Broadway, as well as enjoying the fantastic collection at MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art, and seeing the amazing Hockneys in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Miss Rose, Mr Fieldsend, and I all felt that the students were impeccably behaved and excellent ambassadors for Roedean. SEL

U13 Netball vs Brighton College

Hannah came 4th at Hickstead

Wednesday marked the beginning of the netball season and even though the weather was not in our favour, the U13A girls showed an excellent attitude and real determination to improve. The girls performed well in defence and were able to intercept the ball on a number of occasions, however, they were unable to convert this at the other end of the court. They improved throughout the game and as a result, reduced the number of opportunities for Brighton to score, but we unfortunately lost heavily. Overall, it was a good performance which highlights good potential. Congratulations to Sylva C and Ella KM.

At the end of last term, Hannah M (Yr11) competed at the horse-jumping trials at Hickstead – congratulations to her, as she came joint 4th. She is also hoping to compete next weekend at Pyecombe in the 80cm category – good luck, Hannah!

The U13B squad played excellently on a cold and extremely windy day. Well done to everyone, especially Marianna L, who was voted as Player of the Match by Brighton College. It was a brilliant 8 – 1 win to start the season.

Name the Roedean Bear! Following on from the Christmas Fair, we are holding a competition to name the Roedean Bear. Poor Roedean Bear has gone far too long without a name, so, for 50p, we are asking you to suggest a name for him. Please come down to the admissions office, before the end of January, with your suggestion(s). We will then ask Mr Blond and Miss Keller to choose their favourite from the suggestions – whichever name is chosen will become his official name and the winner will receive their own giant version of Roedean Bear. All of the money collected will go to the Lumos charity.

Winter Photo Competition – The City Are you a budding photographer? The termly Roedean photo competition theme for the Christmas holiday was ‘The City’. The entries for the summer holiday competition were excellent and are now up along main corridor. The deadline for your submissions for this round is Friday 19 January. Please email them to Miss Boles on jbo@roedean.co.uk – the best entries will be displayed for all to see along the Main Corridor.

We welcome contributions from all parts of the Roedean community. If you have something you would like featured in the Headmaster’s Weekly Review, please email: marketing@roedean.co.uk Page 4
