HEAD’S

WEEKLY REVIEW

Head’s Introduction As well as all the girls making a great start to the new academic year, I am very pleased that two new joiners who only arrived on Tuesday are also settling in well. These two new goats are enjoying their enclosure on the Farm, and, just like the new girls, they are growing in confidence and exploring a little more of their surroundings every day. I spoke in Chapel on the first day of term last Friday about making connections with others, and I have enjoyed seeing the girls and staff getting to know each other this week. Year 12 and others had great fun last Saturday doing It’s a Knock-Out teambuilding activities on the fields, and new members of staff have also been introducing themselves to the student body in Assemblies this week. Good luck to those in Years 7, 8, and 10 who go away on their residential trip next week, and to Year 9 who are away from School the following week. All of these activities help to build connections between people, allowing a strong sense of community to build quickly. There is most definitely a wonderfully positive feel around the School, and a quiet confidence, and I am very proud to see it. 155 girls in Years 7 and 8 were out on the Astro on Wednesday this week. That in itself is a fantastic illustration of why it was so important for Roedean to build an all-weather pitch on site. We will have our first fixtures of the year tomorrow, and I wish all the girls and the PE Department well. Today at lunchtime, the girls have been signing up for the activities they will engage in outside their academic programmes at the Co-Curricular Fair. We all know that Roedean is about so much more than what the girls learn in their lessons, and it is wonderful to see the diverse range of activities on offer - I am sure that the girls will throw themselves into them and have a great time doing so. Yesterday, Miss Keller represented the School at the OR Lunch at the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London. There were about 50 ORs attending, and, as well as catching up with old friends, they really enjoyed hearing about how successful their alma mater is in so many different ways today. Some of these ORs will also be coming to Roedean for our annual Founders’ Day service and the Pitch Opening with the Mayor of Brighton and Hove on 28 September. I would like to congratulate you all on a great start to the academic year, and I wish you all well for the coming week.

Goats arrive at Roedean As well as welcoming many new girls this term, Roedean has also welcomed two new members to the School Farm. The two Anglo-Nubian cross goats were born in March and came from a farm in Essex – their prospects were not great there, and we are confident that they will be far happier on our farm at Roedean. They are still a little shy as they settle in, but please come up the farm and meet them. The two nannies are yet to be named, but we are looking forward to the prospect of them being joined by some friends in the near future – when the 5 goats are on site, we’ll have a competition to name them all! Unsung heroes in the spotlight

£653.76 for Pitch Perfect

Each week, many wonderful things happen at Roedean, about which many in the school are perhaps unaware; this section of the weekly review is dedicated to ‘unsung heroes’, in order to draw our attention to these people and remind us that our community is special.

As part of the Pitch Perfect Appeal last year, the Alumnae and Development Team asked each form group to support the appeal by raising money in their form groups. We were thrilled so many forms took part, and extremely impressed with the creativity, and variety of fundraising initiatives. A total of £653 was raised, and we would like to thank everyone who took part. Special congratulations go to Year 7, who were the top performing year group, and 7P as the top performing form – they raised an impressive £171.63, with 8S coming in 2nd with £96.30. GLC

They will be running sessions in which you can get involved in developing and testing the product they have designed. HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

It’s a Knock-Out for the Sixth Form The first weekend of term, the Year 12s, joined by some Year 13s and some of the younger boarders, spent a brilliant few hours larking about, while developing team-working skills and getting to know each other. They worked in teams, on a variety of challenges: balancing glasses of water on their heads in an obstacle course relay, chucking wet sponges to each other while standing on buckets, and passing a ball along the line without using their hands. But the best, and most entertaining challenge, was when one team member had to put on a huge suit, and then get across a series of moving sheets – it was really funny watching them try to stay on their feet, before eventually wobbling over… and then trying to get up again! The weather was lovely and it was summery down on the fields, and everyone had a great time working together and getting to know each other – it was a really lovely day! GH
