HEAD’S

WEEKLY REVIEW

'Clubercise' for the boarding pupils' socia

l event

Head’s Introduction It has been wonderful to see so many of the girls enjoying Roedean’s sports pitches and grounds in the sunshine this week. Amongst all of the weekly activities taking place, I am pleased that lots of girls have had the opportunity to represent the School at events and in the large number of sports fixtures this week, and also that even more girls are choosing to brave the chilly waters of the sea early in the morning at our sea-swimming club. Now that term is fully underway, our work with our partner schools has begun again this week. I attended a meeting at St Mark’s Primary, in which we discussed the impressive range of activities bringing St Mark’s pupils and ours together, and more importantly the potentially life-changing impact this partnership is having on both. I am very grateful to all the girls involved with St

Mark’s, and also to Mr Wilson and Mrs Pittingale for their hard work in setting up and maintaining these activities. We have also enjoyed working in partnership with Deepdene Prep School in Hove and are facilitating meetings between the staff at Deepdene and St Mark’s to share good practice. Yesterday, we held a very successful event in London for the Heads of Prep Schools. A number of students and members of staff attended the event to represent the School, and I was incredibly proud to hear them sharing their thoughts and experiences so eloquently. The students’ passion for learning and their commitment to make the most of every opportunity on offer really shone through, but it was also their self-confidence, generosity of spirit and optimism that our guests commented on. It was wonderful that three of our

Ambassadors were also present: Helen RichardsonWalsh, one of our Sports Ambassadors, has already been coaching at Roedean this term and is also coming to lead workshops on mental resilience on Monday; Dr Suzie Imber will be at Roedean for our STEM festival in early October; and Anabela Chan OR, our Creative Arts Ambassador, will be coming to Roedean next term. All three are wonderful rolemodels for the School in different fields, and they all spoke about how excited they are to share their experiences and expertise with the students. Good luck to the GCSE Geographers who have a residential fieldwork trip this weekend, and I wish you all a wonderful weekend, and a great week to come.

Book Binding Workshop On Tuesday, book binder and conservator, Holly Smith, visited the Art Department for the first KS3 scholars masterclass of the year and the girls had the opportunity to learn the skills and techniques to make their own hand-made sketch book which they will use throughout the year for their Art scholarship work.

Year 11 Business trip to Drusilla’s On Tuesday, Year 11 Business students went on a trip to Drusilla's Zoo. The trip included an educational presentation on Drusilla’s as a business and marketing concern (with specific links to the AQA specification). Drusilla’s is a thriving independent business and a fantastic example of how a small business can grow through successful marketing with a strong focus on the customer experience. The students had some free time to explore the zoo and complete a ‘Marketing Fact Finding’ task. Finally the students and staff got to join in on a ‘meet and greet’ with a few of the smaller animals. Fun was had by all and we got to understand the zoo from a business point of view. We can draw on these examples back in the classroom.

News of Friends Well done to Amber Anning OR, who has won a full scholarship to study at university in America. She achieved excellent results at A Level, and this is all the more impressive, given that she had to balance her studies with intensive training. In July, she represented Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in Boras, Sweden, where she achieved a silver medal in the 400m, in a time of 52.18s, which is the fastest time run by a British U20 woman since 1982, and she then anchored the 4x400m relay team to victory. She is aiming for an Olympic spot next year – what an outstanding achievement that would be!

House 1 Macmillan Preparation House 1 are busy preparing for their annual forthcoming Macmillan Coffee Morning, and this weekend we made bags of sweets to sell. Please do put the date in your diary: Friday 27th September, from 10:30 to 11:30am – all are welcome to House 1 ODR. Any donations of cakes and sweets would be gratefully received. JWL

Sea Swimming is back up and running 18 girls from Yr7 to Yr13 had a bracing swim in the sea on Wednesday, and they even saw the sun rising above Roedean from the sea. On Sunday, the lead group covered 2.5km, swimming for nearly an hour. This means that 35 girls have swum in the sea so far this term!

Mollie’s first swimming gala of the season Mollie T (Yr8) attended the Ken Deeley Open Sprint meet, which was held in Brighton on Saturday 14 September. House Badminton On Monday and Tuesday this week, the houses took to the badminton courts to find out who would be queen of the court! The Junior competition was on Monday and saw some fabulous badminton doubles matches. Tuesday saw the seniors play their turn to win the points, in addition to the enthusiastic staff teams. The atmosphere was lovely and the cheers were so loud Mr Borsoi could hear them from the Astro! Well done to all involved and a huge well done to the overall winners… Houses 1 and 2, who share the Badminton title!

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

Netball U15A vs Tormead

The U15As got off to a great start, dominating play in most of the first quarter and preventing Tormead scoring. However, Tormead soon fought back, and they pulled away in the third quarter. The final score was 41 - 23 to Tormead, meaning that unfortunately we will not progress to the next round. The players of the match were Isla and Liv, who scored some great goals.

U13A vs Brighton Girls

The U13As had their first SNS National Cup match v Brighton Girls. This was a very strong start to their season, with great performances by all. The girls started off particularly strong, gaining a good lead. A well-deserved opposition’s player was Grace J for her amazing interceptions. Jamie received players’ player, which was also well-deserved, she put into practice exactly what we had been focusing on in training, sharp drives for the ball. Well done girls – it was a great game. U12C

Hockey 2nd XI vs Seaford

The 2nd XI played their first match of the season against Seaford College on Saturday. Although the girls got off to a slow start in the first half, they were a completely different team in the second. With increased confidence on the ball, and some excellent defensive tackles from Tatum and Scarlett, the team fought off several attacks from a strong Seaford attacking side. Player of the match was Matilda W (Yr10) in goal, who made several excellent saves. The final score was 5 - 0 to Seaford.

U15B vs Seaford

The U15Bs played some lovely Hockey in their first match of the season. There were fantastic performances by all, in particular girls who had never played before! The whole team played with confidence and moved the ball well. Gladys and Olive cleared the ball strongly out of defence, and we saw some phenomenal saves by Nicole in goal! It was a very good start to the season – well done girls!

U13B vs Windlesham House

The U13Bs enjoyed their first game of the Hockey season away at Windlesham House. It was a very competitive fixture, with some good hockey on show from both sides. We finished at half time 1-0 down, but the girls went back on with determination and Grace scored a fantastic goal to level them up! The opposition’s players were Lilah for her strong defense and Grace for her attacking skills. The girls chose Olivia as their players' player, which was well deserved after her strong clearances out of defence to prevent

U12B vs Windlesham House

In their first Hockey match this year, the U12Bs showed great potential for the season ahead. Within the first two minutes of the game, Roedean narrowly missed a shot on goal, and it wasn't long before Orla managed to score a great goal past two opposition players and the goalie! Constance showed some great defending on the right, and Alya was named as player of the match for her attacking play. The final score was 2-1 to Windlesham House, but the girls played some great Hockey and learnt lots!

U12C vs Windlesham House

The U12C team had their first match of the season against Windlesham House. This was a great game as all the girls were excited to play and put their recently learnt skills into practice. Roedean started well, with some strong passes, and they added pressure to the opposition. In addition, our defence made strong tackles which was brilliant to see. Both Roedean and Windlesham were fighting for the ball throughout. Roedean attacked well, with Fen driving forward well and this resulted in the first goal. In the second half, Roedean continued to add pressure and Dot made some fantastic clearances, resulting in a strong pass to Ellen, which led to the second goal. Roedean girls showed brilliant determination throughout, and they should be proud of their first match and a great result! A huge well done to all!
