HEAD’S

WEEKLY REVIEW

House 4 Activities

Head’s Introduction

It has been an exciting and busy week at Roedean, and we have enjoyed wonderful weather as the backdrop to lots of sport, as well as visits for practical scholarship assessments from prospective Year 7s.

Crochet for Duke of Edinburgh

I am delighted to hear how successful our sports teams have been so far this term. It is wonderful to be able to put out A-E teams in different year-groups, and there is even an U14F team, giving so many girls the opportunity to represent Roedean. The Sports Department is delighted with the success in a range of sports, and you can see examples of this in this Review. There will be a display in the Fireplace next week of the medals and cups which have been won already this term – well done to everyone who has been involved. I would like to congratulate everyone in Years 11, 12, and 13, who have been sitting assessments in Centenary Hall this week. I have been impressed by how positively and maturely the girls have approached the experience – well done! I am also grateful to Miss Howe and the team of invigilators, who have managed lots of different examinations and arrangements so smoothly, to ensure the best experience possible for the girls. Looking ahead, it is exciting that we will be welcoming Sarah Willingham, formerly from Dragon’s Den, to Roedean next week. She will be doing a Q&A session after judging the different products from the Enterprise Day. All of Year 9 and Business students will be attending this in the Theatre at 4:00pm, but I am sure that it will be an opportunity not to miss. In the coming weeks, we are also looking forward to a Samba workshop and a Teatime Recital, as well as celebrating Chinese New Year with a firework display on 1 February. I wish you all well for the weekend and next week.

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

Sarah Willingham – former Dragon comes to Roedean On Monday 24 January, all Year 9 will be taking part in the Melting Pot Enterprise Challenge, testing their skills as entrepreneurs. The Chocolate Challenge – everyone loves chocolate, but can they create the next best thing. The Year 9s will come up with their own chocolate product that could be sold around the world. This hands-on, engaging day will take them through the steps required to create a saleable product, including market research, the creation of their chocolate design, along with packaging, finances, and finally pitching the idea to the judges. This year, Sarah Willingham, a former dragon from BBC's Dragon's Den, will be one of the judges – she has managed many restaurant chains, such as Pizza Express, Planet Hollywood, and Bombay Bicycle Club, so she will be the perfect judge for a food challenge! At the end of the day at 4:00pm, Sarah will be doing a Q&A session in the Theatre – she said you can ask her anything, so get your questions ready! – all of Year 9 and Business students will be present, but any other students are also welcome! Mr Low

New Books in the Library – Philosophy and Religion They: what Muslims and non-Muslims get wrong about each other – by Safraz Manzoor

The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion – by Jonathan Haidt

Manzoor weaves together history, memoir, and reportage, to explore divisions between British Muslim and non-Muslim populations, as well as sharing deeply inspiring stories of tolerance and unity from around the country that give hope for a better future.

Jonathan Haidt reveals that we often find it hard to get along, because our minds are hardwired to be moralistic, judgemental, and self-righteous. He explores how morality evolved to enable us to form communities, and how moral values are not just about justice and equality

Mini Philosophy; A Small Book of Big Ideas – by Johnny Thompson Why do people enjoy watching scary movies? Should we bet on the existence of God? Why is pleasure better than pain? And when is a duck not a duck? Mini Philosophy is a fascinating journey into what some of the greatest minds of the last 2500 years have to say about the big questions in life, and why they are relevant to us today.

The Philosopher Queens: The Lives and Legacies of Philosophy’s Unsung Women – by Rebecca Buxton & Lisa Whiting This collection brings to centre stage twenty prominent women, whose ideas have had a profound – but for the most part uncredited – impact on the world.

How the World Thinks: a Global History of Philosophy – by Julian Baggini

The Women are up to something: How Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley and Iris Murdoch revolutionized Ethics – by Benjamin JB Lipscomb This is the story of four remarkable women who shaped the intellectual history of the 20th century: Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and Iris Murdoch. Together they revolutionized the field of moral philosophy.

Women of Ideas: Interviews from Philosophy Bites – by Suki Finn

Julian Baggini sets out to expand our horizons in How the World Thinks, exploring the philosophies of Japan, India, China, and the Muslim world, as well as the lesser-known oral traditions of Africa and Australia's first peoples.

After: a Doctor Explores what Near-Death Experiences Reveal about Life and Beyond – by Dr. Bruce Greyson In After, Greyson shares the scientific revelations of four decades of research into the dying process. He has become increasingly convinced that dying is less an ending than a transition, the threshold between one form of consciousness and another.

Thirty leading women philosophers draw on and advance the rich heritage of the philosophical tradition to explore topics of pressing interest for today. Page 3

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

House 4 Activities It has been a busy start to the Spring term 2 for House 4; many girls have enjoyed various activities, such as nacho night, movies, baking cupcakes and cookies, pancakes, shopping trips, toasties, arts and crafts, book club, board

games, and much more! A highlight was making good luck cards and cookies for our Year 11 girls, and then delivering the surprise treats to wish them all the best for their GCSE assessments this week! Mrs Wilson

Netball vs Ardingly U12A Win

The U12As had a tough match this week, facing Ardingly's U13Bs. Our Captain, Amelie, was injured in the first quarter, so it was down to 7 players for the squad. The girls were down at half time and heading into quarter 3. But the girls stepped up the pressure and brought the game back in the final quarter. Bella, Lula, and Natahlia turned the ball over at the back, preventing the tall GS from getting the ball. Amber controlled the middle well, with Liv, Sophie, and Izzy looking to get the ball into the D safely. The girls snuck the win in right towards the end of the last quarter. Izzy was awarded Girl of the Game, winning the ball back in attack and shooting well. It was Bella who earned Coaches' Player of the Game for her constant turnovers in defence. This was another fantastic outcome for this promising and talented U12A team. Miss Bamford

U13B Win

It was another strong performance for the U13B team this week against Ardingly's 3rd VII. The girls made an impressive start, winning the first quarter 7-1. They worked hard on their focus point of putting pressure on the ball as it travelled down the court, allowing Layla and Aimee to make numerous intercepts in defence. Again, Isobel and Isabelle's shooting percentages were high, with Isabelle getting opposition's MVP. Coaches' MVP went to Bella, who yet again controlled the play in the centre court. Mention must go to Polly, Alicia, and Tiah who listened carefully to coaching points and were fabulous in the final quarter, allowing us to score 11 goals. The final score was 29-6 to Roedean. Miss Kirby-Jones

U12B

The U12B Netball Team played against Ardingly in rather chilly conditions. While the sun set beautifully on Wednesday afternoon, the girls shone brightly. Bella played brilliantly across the court and particularly in the goal circle, shooting many goals. Yan Yan proved to be reliable and versatile, with impressive skills in all areas of the court; while Athena worked hard and played a fantastic game. Overall, it was an outstanding effort from every girl which resulted in a winning score of 16-5 – well done! Mrs Wilson

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

U15A Netball 44-18 Victory vs Steyning Grammar This was another great result for our brilliantly successful U15A team, who took on Steyning Grammar in the Sussex Cup, Round 1. There were some injuries within the squad, but this was no challenge for the talented Year 10 team. The game was a great opportunity to work on different combinations and play some different positions on the court. It was Lizzie who took away Girl of the Game, and Lilah who earned Coaches' Player of the match. Ruby, Elsie, and Jamie all tied for defensive Player of the Match, making 5 clean intereceptions each throughout the game. The final score ended 44-18 and the girls will progress into Round 2 versus Burgess Hill in early February. Well done to the girls for a great few days of netball. Miss Bamford

U15A

U15 Lady Taverners Cricket Tournament Roedean took two teams to the U15 national indoor cricket tournament at Bede’s, and the event ended in a thrilling finish. Going into the final round of fixtures, Roedean A needed to beat Bede’s to qualify, but they also needed the B team to beat Mayfield. The As won their match, and went to support the Bs, whose result rested on the final 3 balls. The Bs unfortunately fell agonisingly short in their run chase, but they had shown an outstanding fight to take the game that far. Well done to all the girls involved, particularly as 12 of the 16 players were from Year 9, so were playing girls a year older. Mr Smethurst

U14 and U15

U14 and U15 Badminton Victory vs Brighton Girls Our mixed U15 and U14 Badminton team played a friendly on Thursday night against Brighton Girls, and there was some brilliant skill on show. We played 5 rounds, with two courts playing standard singles and doubles and two courts playing timed games. The combination of Athena, Mancy, Alice, and Ellie played some strong opposition and were given a good challenge in their games, winning 7 out of their 10 games. In the timed games, the team of Mairi, Kisu, Hannah, Henrietta, and Martha played on rotation. With a range of experience within both teams, the girls supported each other really well and won half of the matches they played. This meant that overall Roedean took the fixture win – congratulations! Miss Kirby-Jones

New Roedean Swimming Records for Sisters Congratulations to sisters, Mollie (Yr10) and Alice (Yr8), who have broken Roedean swimming records this academic year. Mollie broke the Open 100-metre Individual Medley Record, swimming a time of 1 minute 11.25 seconds, and Alice broke the Junior 100-metre Individual Medley Record, with a time of 1 minute 16.99 seconds. These records are all the more impressive, since they are the first to be set since 2016. Well done! Mr Alexander-Buckley

Sporting Successes So Far This Term Congratulations to everyone who has been involved in matches so far this term – you can see from this list that it has been a brilliant start to the Spring Term for Sport! Miss Wakeling ■

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

Sussex Schools' Cross Country Championship On Tuesday, Roedean fielded two teams in the Sussex Schools' Cross Country Championships. Elsa, Bella, Ruby, and Aimee made up the U15 team competing against over 200 other girls. Izzy, Katie, and Eloise completed as the U17 team, again facing girls two years above them in age. All 7 girls worked extremely hard on a tough, muddy course, and all finished in competitive positions amongst a field of high calibre athletes. Well done! Miss Kirby-Jones

1st VII Netball vs Hurst

U12 Netball Backdrop!

The 1st VII played an extremely competitive game against Hurst on Wednesday. We were a little slow off the mark, as this was just the second match of the season, and we went down 9-14 in the first half. However, the girls regrouped and played a brilliant second half. Poppy and Olivia worked incredibly hard in defence and made countless turnovers, and, along with some strong shooting from Sophia and Rula, we were able to push the score to 1818 in third quarter. Unfortunately, a few missed shots meant that Hurst edged ahead in the final quarter to win 26-23. Overall, it was a very strong performance. Miss Kirby-Jones
