HEAD’S

WEEKLY REVIEW

A Water Fight – Great idea! Super soakers had been ordered, balloons were filled, buckets were overflowing, and bottles primed... On Tuesday evening, House 3 and House 4 came together for an epic summer water fight! The girls grabbed every available container in their Houses to take part in the newest addition to Roedean’s inter-house competitions. This ‘battle royale’ took place out on the fields and proved to be the perfect end to Roedean’s hottest day of the year. It was impossible to tell who won, but it is something that is sure to be a regular fixture in our summer calendar!

Head’s Introduction Roedean Day tomorrow will be a wonderful day of celebration. I am looking forward to congratulating so many girls on their prizes and awards, to welcoming back over 80 ORs and their guests, to seeing fantastic exhibitions of artwork and displays of scholarship, and to enjoying the buzz of competition at Sports Day. It will be a great day, and good luck to everyone involved. This week, we welcomed a hundred girls who are considering coming to Roedean in 2018 to our annual Rockpools event. This year was bigger and better than ever, and teams of girls in brightly-coloured T-shirts had a brilliant time doing a variety of activities, but most simply loved searching for creatures in the rockpools

down on the beach. It reminded me how lucky we are to be in this wonderful location. I am very grateful to all my colleagues who spent the day leading these teams, and, of course, to the Admissions Department for running the event. We also had 15 visitors from the Watts Gallery this week, who were finding out about Roedean’s connections with this famous artist, and Mrs Stanway and Mrs Sullivan gave them a wonderful tour. Well done to Martha, Emily, and Liv, who were each presented with Gold Awards for charitable work in the Metropole by the Rotary Club of Brighton this week, and to all those who went on Duke of Edinburgh expeditions last weekend. Many of those girls who have undertaken

Academic Mentoring Projects this term had the opportunity to present them this week; not only were the projects both varied and interesting, but I was absolutely delighted to see the obvious passion for learning and the desire to know more - well done to all involved, and to Miss Kazem for bringing the event together. The finals of Roedean Musician of the Year were outstanding on Monday; the girls’ talents are so impressive, as is their confidence when performing. Congratulations to Alma, Maggie, Amelie, and Juliette for winning their classes. I look forward to welcoming many of you to Roedean Day tomorrow, and also to Race for Life on Tuesday, which kicks off our final week of exciting activities for Festival Week. Good luck to you all for the last week of term.

Unsung heroes in the spotlight Each week, many wonderful things happen at Roedean, about which many in the school are perhaps unaware; this section of the weekly review is dedicated to ‘unsung heroes’, in order to draw our attention to these people and remind us that our community is special.

The Artemisian

This week sees the publication of the first edition of the Artemisian, Roedean’s new student magazine, spear-headed by Nahida U and Ellie G (Yr12), featuring articles from girls in a variety of year-groups. It follows in the footsteps of The Boudicca Bulletin, which faded into obscurity two years ago, and, judging by the quality of the articles, it will be a great success. Congratulations to Nahida and Ellie, and thank you to Ms Boobis, Mrs Ellis and Miss Boles for their Politics er learn invaluable support! Do we ev mistakes? m our fro

DofE expeditions! Last weekend, 36 students set off for their final Bronze DofE expedition. It was a great way to round off all the hard work we have put into our DofE this year, and, besides the long distance walking and the scorching temperatures, I can say on behalf of everyone that it was a very enjoyable weekend. Particular highlights were playing ‘rounders-cricket’ in our camp and building a huge fire to prove to the boys’ school that our fire-building skills were just as good, if not better, than theirs. Of course, we succeeded! Many thanks to Outspark staff, Jake, Martin, and Shane, plus Mr Silvey, Miss

3 Gold Rotary Awards for Roedeanians! Congratulations to Emily T, Martha N (Yr12), and Liv H (Yr9) who were presented with Gold Awards by the Rotary Club of Brighton, for their fantastic contributions to charitable causes. Emily and Martha ran the Brighton Half earlier in the year to raise money for the Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, and Liv went to Madagascar last year and is going to Nepal this year on charitable missions. Emily said, ‘The evening was a great experience. Not only was it an honour to receive the Gold Rotary award from the Lord Lieutenant, but we also got to hear about all the inspiring charity work other young people have been doing in Brighton and Hove.’ Martha and Emily gave a short speech about their experiences, which may well have inspired others to do some charity work themselves. Well done to all three! RB Page 2

Hawks, Dr Blood, and Miss Roberts for taking us on the trip. Overall, it was a fantastic weekend and many of us are looking forward to getting stuck in with our Silver DofE next year.

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

23rd June 2017 - Issue 8

Rockpools It was a scorcher – covered in sun-cream and drinking lots of water, 92 girls who are hoping to join Roedean in 2018 had a brilliant day with our staff and Year 9 guides. They went to the beach through our tunnel to see what they could find in the rockpools, they built rockets and hot air balloons, and competed in colourcoded teams in the team-building games. The azure blue team was the winner of the best (and most brutal) chant: ‘We’re team 2, we wear blue, we’re going to win because we’re better than you!’ By the time their parents came to collect them and have afternoon tea, the girls were tired but even more excited about Roedean than they were before. Congratulations to the whole Admissions’ Team, who have organised three highly successful events in three weeks – there really is no better way to find out about Roedean than to come and see the school in the flesh, so to speak, and the girls all loved it!

Chinese Essay Writing winners Two Roedean girls have won awards in the 12th UK National Chinese Essay Writing Competition in the Native Chinese category. Cathy Z (Yr10) won the 1st Prize and Jingxuan W (Yr11) won the 3rd Prize. Their writings have also been nominated for the World Chinese Youth Writing Competition. Congratulations to them both!

Roedean Musician of the Year The Roedean Musician of the Year is a new competition for this year, and we were delighted that over 40 girls took part in the first rounds of the competition. On June 19, the finalists performed to our visiting adjudicator Sarah Field, a professional saxophonist and trumpeter, with a friendly audience of other competitors, parents, friends, and staff. Well done to all the girls who took part – every one performed very well in the final of the competition and they deserve to be very proud of themselves. Our younger girls in Year 8 who were competing in the top two classes also deserve particular praise – very well done. The following are the winners and runners-up in each category: Grades 2 & 3 Runner Up Winner

Cricket Fantastic win for U12C vs Cumnor The U12C Cricket team put on a remarkable performance against Cumnor House. The game started positively with Roedean winning the toss and electing to field first. Roedean’s bowling was very strong, with a wicket taken in the 3rd over. Cumnor continued to bat very consistently, however some impressive and extremely accurate throwing took a further 4 wickets, 3 of them in one over from direct-hit run outs. This left Cumnor with a total of 46 runs. Roedean began batting strongly, with the first pair scoring 22 runs. This got Roedean off to a great start and allowed the batters to relax and really think about where they were hitting the ball. Numerous boundaries resulted in a well-deserved and inspiring win of 96 runs.

Ruby and Amber A have both been selected to represent Roedean as part of the Sussex Schools’ team at the English Schools’ Championships in Birmingham on the 7th-8th July. Amber will be defending her 300m title, that is unless she is selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games team!) and she will be aiming for three English Schools’ titles in a row. However, this is the first time Ruby has been eligible to compete, and, as the leading U15 runner in Sussex over both 100 and 200m, she has performed incredibly well this season to achieve selection over 100m. We wish them both the best of luck!

Track and Field

Excellent game for U12B

Our junior athletes travelled to The Julie Rose Stadium in Kent last Thursday to compete at the Regional A Final of the Track and Field Cup. This was a fantastic achievement for our 12 athletes, and Roedean was up against schools from London, Kent, Sussex, and Surrey. The girls competed in the field in the morning, and we had good performances from Tatum W in the Javelin, Sophia C in the Long Jump, Ruby A in the Discus, and Serena C in the High Jump, scoring over 18 points each. The afternoon started well on the track, and Tatum came a respectable 4th in the 1500m on a very hot day, scoring 24 points. Ada O came 2nd in the 100m and Ruby A won her 200m race, the distance at which she has been selected to compete at The English Schools’ in the summer. Serena again achieved 18 points in the 800m race, and the relay team ended the day with a fantastic win, gaining 15 points, which made up for their DQ in the earlier round. Overall, it was a fantastic achievement for the girls and amazing to be competing at such a great venue. Well done to the Yr7s, who gained vital experience for next year’s competition and the Yr8s who now who will be competing in the intermediate competition next year. This rounded off a great season for the athletes, and Miss Andrew is very proud of you all. 100m

Discus Javelin

On the hottest and longest day, the U12B cricket team played an adapted pairs cricket match against Cumnor House. Roedean lost the toss and went into bat. Olivia B and Bo Ana M made a great start, scoring 18 runs in the first two overs. This really helped the rest of the team to bat with no pressure, allowing them to play aggressively, which resulted in the girls scoring 54 runs in 8 overs. Cumnor House went into bat scoring very well, and were ahead of the run rate in the first two overs. However, with some good bowling in the middle of the innings by Sydney O and Darcey M, Cumnor House was restricted to 40 runs, with 15 runs required to win in two overs. In the last over, Cumnor House scored the winning runs with two balls to spare. It was an excellent game, with both teams batting very well. ACA
