ROEDEAN’S FESTIVAL CELEBRATING INSPIRING WOMEN
Iceland Trip
Skiing Trip
Welcome back after the half-term holidays – I hope that you all enjoyed the break and had an opportunity to recharge your batteries and have a well-deserved rest. They say a change is as good as a rest, and some girls and staff set off on exciting trips to Iceland, skiing in America, and watching Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon. I am very grateful to my colleagues for giving up part of their holiday to provide these opportunities for the girls, and it seems that everyone had a wonderful time. This half-term is both short and busy, and this week and next are both excellent examples of this. We have been very fortunate to have the writer Juno Dawson in School this week, the Year 7 and 8 Boarding Social was a great success and lots of fun, the Geography Department held the first of a series of Skype interview-lectures, and there have been lots of sporting fixtures, including two brilliant swimming galas which Roedean won. I am also very proud to hear of a number of individual successes in a variety of sports, including Pole Vault, Cross Country, Hockey, and Speed Skating, Galina winning a place in a national youth orchestra, and outstanding successes in the Biology Olympiad - congratulations to you all! Next week, Roedean will be marking International Women’s Day on Thursday, with an array of impressive role-models speaking on a range of topics – this will be a wonderful opportunity to hear from successful women who will, no doubt, inspire the girls. We will also be celebrating World Book Day, and Open Day will be on Saturday. I would like to thank everyone for all their contributions and hard work to make these events a great success. Good luck to everyone who is involved in this evening’s ‘Name That Tune’ concert, and enjoy the leap day, February 29, tomorrow – it only comes around once every four years!

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW
Unsung heroes in the spotlight Each week, many wonderful things happen at Roedean, about which many in the school are perhaps unaware; this section of the weekly review is dedicated to ‘unsung heroes’, in order to draw our attention to these people and remind us that our community is special.
Jemima, Bo Ana, Sylva, and Sophie (Yr10) for so openly and reflectively sharing their learning from last year’s Humanities Diploma with the current Year 9 students who are about to embark on their own Diploma [JS]
Lara, Elsie, Ellen, and Rosie (Yr13) for sharing their experiences of Sixth Form life and the support they received when applying to university with the Year 11s [JSH]
Victoria (Yr12) for devoting a lot of her time after school this week providing science support to girls in the lower years [PHA]
Stratford Trip Over half term, I was lucky enough to go on the Stratford-upon-Avon trip with the Drama department for a weekend of entertainment, enrichment and fun!
Unsung heroes in the spotlight Each week, a member of staff who has gone above and beyond the call of duty can be nominated by their colleagues or the girls. Mrs Strachan for going above and beyond the call of duty, being generous with her time, being welcoming and hugely hospitable with prospective touring families [DBA]
Ms Andrew for continued support across multiple departments in the school [PHA]
It was wonderful to see Shakespeare’s birthplace and learn about the man himself. What an idyllic, beautiful place to grow up! The place seems to still hold the same character as it had back in the 1500s when he was born. We were thrilled to be able to visit the Holy Trinity Church, which was where he was baptised and buried. The first night we watched his King John, which was intense and fascinating, with a modern, comedic twist. We also did a workshop at the Royal Shakespeare Company, which was an interactive rehearsal, giving us lots of artistic licence to play with.
On our second night, once again we were back at the theatre, this time for the stage adaptation of David Walliams’ novel, The Boy in the Dress. This was a brilliant show, with the young actors particularly impressing us with their amazing acting, singing and dancing skills. The music was written by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, and every song was so catchy. It was an extremely entertaining show. It was certainly a weekend packed with fun and plenty of laughs, as well as entertainment and learning. Thank you to Mrs Woodbridge and Miss Stephens for taking us on the most amazing trip – I, for one, can’t wait for the next one!

Iceland Trip During half term, I went on the trip to Iceland, which was absolutely amazing. We saw some astounding sights, from waterfalls to glaciers and even amazing sunrises. With 34 girls on the trip, our tour guide, Katie, managed to engross us in every remarkable sight we went to. On the day we arrived, we visited the amazing Blue Lagoon – the water was a mystical turquoise colour, with steam gushing across the surface. A red flag warning due to the challenging weather that we were faced with meant that we were upgraded to a glamorous hotel in Reykjavík. We visited the Reykjavik Concert Hall, which was spectacular, and when the light shone through the hexagonal windows there were a variety of colours from yellow to purple symbolising the Northern Lights. After being swept off our feet by the forceful winds that exceeded 70mph and the commotion of the loss of India’s hat, we just about all made it onto the coach ready to visit the Lava Centre in Hvolsvöllur, which lies on a plain in front row of four large active volcanoes and a group of volcanic islands. We learnt more about the eruption under a glacier, volcanic belts, and even more about earthquakes. The highlight of this trip was getting to experiencing what it would be like when an earthquake occurred, giving us a deeper understanding of the shaking of the ground and earth-shattering noise of an earthquake. To our horror, the next morning we had to take advantage of the good weather and wake up at 6:30! We visited Skógafoss Waterfall, which took all our breath away. This colossal waterfall, standing at a massive 60 metres tall, is one of Iceland’s biggest and most beautiful waterfalls. We also visited the Secret Lagoon, which was definately one of my highlights of the entire trip! The boiling temperature of the lagoon exceeded 38-40 degrees Celsius, compared to the sub-zero temperatures of the air outside, so we were very tempted to stay in the lagoon forever! It was a great opportunity to relax and hang out with friends. After another amazing day, that evening we enjoyed some free time where we made some very entertaining Tik Toks with the teachers! The next morning, it was another early wake up to the angelic voice of Mrs Sharp singing ‘Sucker’ by the Jonas Brothers! We went to the most incredible waterfall called Gullfoss Waterfall, which was a two-tiered waterfall with a total cumulative height of 32 meters. It is one of the largest volume falls in Europe, with the area around the waterfall being about 200 meters above sea level. Afterwards we visited a ‘Geysir’ – it was brilliant to watch it explode into mid-air. We learnt that every time a geyser erupts (this particular geyser erupted every 12-15 minutes), it’s heavy in minerals (silica and sulphur) and each time adds a layer of silica. To end our adventure, we went to Thingvellir National Park to see the amazing views it had to offer. After a wonderful trip, we thanked Katie for her fun and educational tour of Iceland and set off for the airport. I had the most incredible adventure to Iceland, and would like to thank Miss Smith on behalf of all the students and members of staff for organising such a successful trip – I am already thoroughly looking forward for my next trip to Iceland!

Skiing in Vermont 47 girls from Years 8 to 13 went to Killington, Vermont, over half-term. The slopes were amazing, and the chair-lifts were empty. We had a great instructor, and he said that Roedean’s group was the best British advanced group he had ever had. Lara (Yr8) was in the top group, despite her age, and the instructor felt that she had the best technique in the group. The girls and staff also had a brilliant time going down the slopes in a tube!
Trip to see Les Misérables On Tuesday, we took a group of 22 girls rom Years 9-12 to see the brand new West End production of the longest running musical ever, Les Misérables. The show was absolutely amazing and the girls all thoroughly enjoyed it. We were so incredibly impressed with the way in which the girls represented Roedean, both on the coach and at the theatre, and it was such a pleasure to spend the evening with them, enjoying this fantastic piece of theatre. Amelia (Yr9) said ‘Thank you so much for an unforgettable trip. I had such an incredible time and Les Mis is definitely the best musical ever!’
The group also had the chance to spend a day in Boston, walking the Freedom Trail, which is a tour which highlights the rich history of the city. The girls were great ambassadors for Roedean, and they had a wonderful time!

‘Queen of Teen’ Introduces A Few of Her Subjects! Roedean has an established friendship with ‘Queen of Teen’, Juno Dawson. As a local writer, who has been prolific in writing teen fiction – even setting Say Her Name in a fictionalised Roedean – we have seen her as a regular fixture at the SSBA Awards and library signings. However, this week’s visit was a little different: Dawson visited as part of LGBT+ History Month and was generous enough to share her vulnerabilities and insights around mental health issues in young people, particularly in the LGBTU community. Her reflections were both useful, and delivered with her trademark tonguein-cheek asides (no mean feat when discussing such a sensitive topic). She reminded the 140-strong audience that sometimes you can be having a bad fortnight, but you can always look for how each day is an improvement on yesterday, or what it would take to make just a marginal improvement. Later, Dawson spoke to Year 9 as they prepare to begin their non-fiction unit in English lessons. She is also a much awarded non-fiction writer and was
Galina’s in the NSSO Congratulations to Galina (Yr8), who has been accepted into the National Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, and this is a place right through until she finishes the Sixth Form! She also won the Junior Concerto competition at the Hastings Music Festival, with the first movement of Weber's first Clarinet Concerto, and she also placed 3rd with her performance of the third movement of Shostakovich’s second Piano Concerto. She's also been selected as one of two young musicians to perform in the Hastings Piano Festival, working with Oscar-winning composer, Rachel Portman OBE – this performance takes place on Friday 6th March. Well done!
able to share some top tips about her processes with the pupils, including cultivating their own unique voice and structuring factual information so that it tells a story. She shared a preview of her upcoming book What’s The T?, a follow up to This Book Is Gay that focuses on giving information and guidance on gender identity. Finally, she conducted a ‘meet the author’ session in the Library after school, where fans were able to speak to her one-to-one and have their favourite fiction and non-fiction books signed as a memento of the visit. Thank you to Juno Dawson and her team, as well as to Mrs Bailey for helping to run the event. HBO
Year 7 and 8 Boarders’ Social – Super Supper! The studios looked amazing 'dressed for an occasion' with lights, sound, and beautifully set tables. 44 boarders were joined by Miss Le Bihan, Mrs Waller, Mrs Haining, Mrs Wilson, Miss Best, and Mr Chamberlain, and we all shared an evening together talking, eating, and piecing together the answers to 4 tailor-made quizzes. This was an evening we will remember, being together as house and year communities, with a chance to enjoy a delicious main meal and desert. The 'music of the night' added a new dimension of entertainment, sharing a significant number of intricate dance moves, which Miss Le Bihan mastered in no time! Thank you to the boarders in Year 7 and 8 for being supportive of the evening and it was lovely to enjoy conversations beyond the school day. JC
CAP Gold Award for Roedean Well done to the entire domestic team, who have been awarded the Gold award, for the third year running. The inspector came to Roedean in early November and he was incredibly thorough, and, armed with swabs and torches, he spent a full day in School, checking the boarding houses, the classrooms, and communal areas. This wonderful award is a testament to the consistently hard work of the domestic team – congratulations!

Geography Global Connect Skype Lecture Series Monday saw the Geography Department’s launch of the Global Connect Skype Lecture Series. Year 11 and 12 Geographers met at lunch to Skype Northern Nigeria to talk with Joanna Francis who works for DFID. Joanna is a Livelihoods Adviser in the Economic Development Team working predominantly in the agricultural sector to transform rural economies. After completing her Human Geography degree, Joanna then did an MSc in Environmental Change and International Development, before working for DFID. She spoke about her experiences and her pathway through Geography to DFID, and how Geography provides the breadth and depth required for her wide-ranging role. Joanna also spoke about the importance of the first 1000 days of a child’s life, and how effective use of aid can help to give children a good start in life. Liv (Yr12) summed up the event in her thanks: ‘It was really helpful to hear more about the international development aspect of Geography, as it is something I hope to pursue at university. Your personal experiences on rural poverty definitely gave all of us a new perspective on the differing rates of rural and urban change in other places. To hear real-life examples really brings geographical theory to life. Thank you for providing a unique, personal insight into the topic as well as answering our questions.’
Year 9 Humanities Diploma This week saw the launch of the Year 9 Humanities Diploma, an independent research project that Year 9 students will complete over the course of this half term. The aims are to celebrate progress and attainment in Humanities in Key Stage 3, and to give students the opportunity to extend themselves well beyond the curriculum through the creation of a research essay on the theme of conflict. In assembly this week, four Year 10 students shared their experiences from last year. Jemima, Sophie, Sylva, and Bo Ana all reflected eloquently on their research, and the insights and understandings they gained from the process. We look forward to seeing what this year’s cohort produce! JS
We hope that this is the first of many Skype lectures, enabling us to talk with interesting people doing interesting things in distant places. JS
February 29th Thank you to Ellen and Nadiyah (Yr13) who explained some of the science behind why we have leap years in Chapel, and to Amelie (Yr11), who is a ‘leapling’ – this really is a rarity, with the odds being 1486 to 1, that is 0.068%, so there are only 5 million people born on February 29th in the world! Amelie said, ‘So I was born on the 29th February, which means that I only have an actual birthday every four years. But I normally have a party on 28th February, and stretch the celebrations out to make up for there not being the 29th three years out of four. In a leap year, when there is the 29th, I definitely have a bigger celebration and do something really exciting on my actual birthday, like going to EuroDisney. Do I wish I had a ‘normal’ birthday like everybody else? – no, I don’t think so, because it is special to be born on the leap day, and when everyone else is 100, I’ll only be 25!’ It was very kind of Orla to bake a cake for Sarah

Year 7 & 8 Schools Cross Country The Year 7&8s had their final cross country race of the season. It was a sunny day, but, due to rain the night before, it was wet and muddy on the course. Our Year 7 Girls set off first with a 2.5km course. All the girls were nervous at the start, but once the start gun went off, Roedean demonstrated some fantastic stamina and endurance throughout. Final placings were: Eloise – 75th, Izzy – 99th, Joanna – 130th, Lydia – 139th, and Rida – 182nd. Next up was the Year 8 race, which was a total distance of 3km. The initial pace set was quick, so the girls set off strong and tried to maintain this throughout. Final placings were: Katie – 49th, Tayla – 69th, and Holly – 93rd. A huge well done to everyone that ran and to Lydia for preserving and showing great resilience throughout. A fantastic end to the season!
Junior and Inter Cross Country Our Junior Girls had a brilliant performance in the Sussex Schools’ Cross Country event held at Waterhall. The girls had to run 3k in total, and there were hilly elements on the course. Roedean demonstrated some great resilience throughout and persevered well, and there were some tremendous sprint finishes! Well done to Amelia – 26th, Nia – 52nd, Rose – 60th, Isabella – 66th, and Holly – 133rd.
37th, and Serena – 61st. Well done too to Gracie who was ready to go for her Senior race, until it was cancelled due to bad weather conditions.
Our Inter Girls had a great race too. They had to run a total of 3.5k, in tough windy conditions. The girls set off at a fast pace at the start and maintained this throughout. The hills were tough and slippery, so this made it tricky at the latter stages of the race. Well done in particular to Sophie who came 6th, and she qualified for the Inter Counties, which is a fantastic achievement. The other runners were Sophia – 34th, Luella – Page 8
Constance in County Champion Constance has been crowned overall Sussex County Champion for her age for the second year running. She now has 12 qualifying times for the South East regional championships after Easter. She has recently swum times that put her in the top 10 on the English rankings for 800m freestyle (long course) and 1500m freestyle (long and short course). She is now looking forward to competing at the Level 1 International meet at the Olympic pool in Stratford in 3 weeks. We wish her luck!

Netball vs Burgess Hill Girls
U13D
The girls played exceptionally well to win against Burgess Hill in Wednesday’s match, considering they all played in positions they don’t normally play. Their communication on court was excellent, and all the players worked hard, driving towards the ball. Well done to Alex, who was nominated as player of the match.
1st Team
The 1st team had an excellent and enjoyable fixture vs Burgess Hill as their season is coming to a close. The girls played some fantastic netball, working the ball down the court with composure and confidence. The defensive unit played some outstanding netball once again, as Ella and Demi battled against the strong shooter. The girl of the game goes to Liv whose shooting in the circle and support out on the centre pass was excellent.
U12B
The U12B team had a fantastic match – the first quarter was neck and neck, and both teams demonstrated some strong attacking play throughout. Lydia made some brilliant interceptions throughout the game. Overall, the U12B team improved in each quarter, which is fantastic. The result was Roedean 7 – Burgess Hill 4. A huge well done to all that played and a special mention to Dot, who was named Player of the Match! U13B
U13B
1st Team
The U13s were once again on great form and continued their successful season with another win against Burgess Hill. The match itself was a low scoring, but end-to-end game, which saw an early lead from Roedean in the first quarter. The defensive players from both teams were excellent throughout, which contributed to the low score – Lilah, Olivia, and Tabitha made some excellent interceptions. Well done to Lizzie, Olivia, and Tabitha, who won best defence, best attack, and Players’ Player.
U13A
U12B
The U13As played extremely well against a strong Burgess Hill side. We had some outstanding performance across the board, adapting to new combinations. The girls worked hard and reacted to counter-attacks really quickly. Congratulations to the following: PP went to Elsie for her fantastic movement and shooting; OP went to Grace for her great defensive play and support in attack; CP went to Ella for excellent defensive pressure and movement round the player. Well done all!
U12C
The U12C team were excited for their game against Burgess Hill. With a good training session behind them, they were looking forward to putting into practice what they had learnt. Burgess Hill had some really accurate shooters and we made too many mistakes in the first quarter which gave them a comfortable lead which we struggled to overcome for the rest of the game. However, our third quarter was fantastic and the girls really demonstrated the skills they have developed over the season. Player of the Match went to Kisu, who was a fantastic team player throughout the game and was really strong in her defence down the court, as well as her attacking play. Well done everyone!
U13C
U13C
U13A
The U13Cs ventured to Burgess Hill Girls in another attempt to secure a win and they did not disappoint. The girls demonstrated skill, determination, and teamwork throughout the whole game, with excellent shooting from Maddie, Fleur, and Ella, scoring a total of 22 goals to Burgess Hill’s 9. The defence dominated the defensive end, with some excellent interceptions and tips from Holly, Alba, and Alice. It was another great win from this strong U13C side – congratulations to Maddie for being named Girl of the Game. Page 9
Amalie is Sussex Pole Vault Champion! At the beginning of half-term week, Amalie (Yr9) took part in the Pole Vault competition at the Sussex Indoor Championships. She won Gold in the U15 girls’ category, which is an impressive achievement, given that she only started the sport last spring.

Alex Skating for Team GB – a new British Record Well done to Alex (Yr8), who competed for Team GB last weekend at the 30th Youth Country Match in Seinajöki, Finland. She skated up a category (Junior C, U16) as she had the qualifying time, but the competition was clearly much harder for her. Competing against skaters from Finland, Sweden, and Norway, Alex placed 4th (500m), 5th (500m), 6th (1000m), and 8th (1500m) in her four races. This resulted in an overall placing of 5th out of 14. In the 1500m, Alex gained a new PB of 2.40:40, an improvement of almost 4 seconds on her previous time, and this time is also a new U14 British record. Alex was also awarded a prize by the organising committee for earning the most competitive points of the all the ladies competing for the British team. This was the first time that Alex had competed on a natural outdoor 400m longtrack rink, which made for an interesting competition for her. On day 1, she skated in freezing rain and wind, but
Four-Way Swimming Gala Congratulations to our swimmers – we had an outstanding victory in Monday’s swimming gala at Roedean. Four schools took part, but Roedean won over 75% of the races. It was a great team effort, with swimmers stepping in to fill places due to illness. They also enjoyed very good support from all, particularly India and Jemima. These are the results: ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■
1st: Roedean – 68 points 2nd: Burgess Hill – 55 points 3rd: Mayfield – 39 points 4th: Bede’s – 13 points
she did so with a smile on her face! Day 2 was a much more pleasant day for her, albeit with below freezing temperatures, as there with clear blue skies and warm sun shining through. Alex will be competing again this weekend for Team GB at the Viking Race (European Youth Championships) in Heerenveen, Netherlands, the largest Youth longtrack speed skating competition in the world. She finished 7th out of 24 competitors at last year’s championship (in the U13 category), so she is looking to hopefully improve on this placement this year (in the U14 category). Competing against Europe’s best longtrack speed skaters will be an exciting two day championship competition for Alex – she said, ‘I really enjoyed competing at the 30th Youth Country Match, and getting so close to my 500m personal best time on such hard ice. It has given me confidence that I can get a new PB at the Viking Race this coming weekend in Heerenveen. I was thrilled to get a new 1500m PB, something that I was not expecting to get at all this weekend.’
Roedean take the win at Brighton College’s inaugural swimming gala Last night, the U13A&B team and U15A&B team competed in Brighton College’s opening swimming gala in their new pool. The U13s won the gala with the U15s coming a close second. The U13 and U15 points were added up and Roedean were the crowned overall winners of the gala. A huge well done to all the girls involved as the event was a combined A&B team effort with a squad of 17 girls swimming. A particular well done to Izzy who stepped up to compete in a race that wasn’t her favourite. The girls supported each other continuously throughout the event and India should be commended was the support she gave the team. The girls have two more galas this term and we wish them the very best of luck in these events.
We welcome contributions from all parts of the Roedean community. If you have something you would like featured in the Headmaster’s Weekly Review, please email: marketing@roedean.co.uk
Sussex Rugby for Lara Well done to Lara (Yr11), who has again been selected to represent Sussex at rugby. This will be the third year in a row that Lara has been a member of the county squad, and this year sees her in the U18 squad, and, at 15 years old, she is one of the youngest players.
