Admissions Overview At Roedean, we aim to make the admissions process as smooth and informative as possible. We understand that choosing the right senior school for your daughter is a big decision, and we will help in any way we can. Our Registrars, Ms Joanna Clarke and Mrs Alexa Barlow, are supported by Mrs Hayley Chinnery and Miss Jessica Boles, and they will be your main points of contact throughout the admissions process. The team will be happy to discuss any questions you may have along the way.

You are, of course, most welcome to visit the School; this is the best way to find out what makes a Roedean education so unique. You can find out more about our three Open Days each year and about taster days on the relevant page on our website. Year 7, Year 9, and Sixth Form are the main entry points, but a good number of girls join the school in Year 8 and Year 10 each year; the admissions process is the same as for Years 7 and 9. We look forward to welcoming you to the school in the near future.

For further information, please contact Ms Joanna Clarke, Registrar, on jco@roedean.co.uk or +44(0)1273 667658 3

Standard Entry Process (Years 7 & 9)

Our standard entry process is a series of activitybased days, beginning in the Summer, just over a year prior to entry.

Stage 1: Enquiry If you would like a copy of the prospectus after viewing the website, please fill out our enquiry form or contact the admissions team – we also welcome any other questions you may have.

Stage 2: Visiting the School Visiting the school and meeting the girls is the best way to find out what makes Roedean special. You can either come to an Open Day or have an individual visit – for both, you will be taken on a tour of the school and boarding houses with a student of approximately the same age as your daughter, you may meet the Headmaster, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions of the Registrar. An individual visit during term-time will allow you to experience the school in full swing with students and staff going about their daily life. Visitors often comment on the dynamic, positive, energetic and happy atmosphere of the school, as well as the open and relaxed manner of the girls. To book a visit, please fill out our enquiry form. 4

Stage 3: Rockpools Day Rockpools Day is the first main admissions event, normally held in the June just over a year prior to entry. At Rockpools, the girls disappear down Roedean’s secret tunnel to the sea, explore the rockpools, and take part in team-building activities! It is an informal, hotly-anticipated and hugelyenjoyable day when the girls begin to build friendships with each other and their relationship with the school.

Stage 4: Registering your daughter We would be delighted to discuss your daughter’s registration and talk you through the process. We encourage you to register as soon as possible. Once she is registered, we will keep you updated with any information regarding her entry exams, as well as future events at Roedean which may be of interest. The registration deadline is in the October prior to entry. If you would like to apply for a Scholarship, details and an application form can be found on our website.

UK ADMISSIONS

Stage 5: Taster Days The best possible way for your daughter to understand how the school works is to have a taster day, which allows her to experience what life could be like at the school from the inside. It can be a huge benefit for prospective students to have the chance to meet some of their potential future classmates and get to know the staff and facilities, whether you are considering day or boarding.

Stage 6: Assessment Entrance testing in English, Maths and Non-Verbal

Reasoning, and a short interview, takes place in the January of the year of entry (and those girls who did not attend Discovery Day also take the Non-Verbal Reasoning test and have an interview).

For Year 7 entry, the content of both papers is in line with the National Curriculum expectations in Years 5 & 6. The papers will, however, be challenging, as they are designed to highlight the abilities of the most able pupils. It is likely that successful candidates will be studying at the upper level of Key Stage 2. For Year 9 entry, the content of the papers is in line with usual expectations of a Year 8 pupil, but elements of the papers will also stretch the most able and give them the opportunity to demonstrate their full ability. We try to make the experience as positive as an exam day can be.

Stage 7: Offers Offers are made at the beginning of February, with the acceptance deadline being early March. In order to secure the place, you will need to return the completed acceptance form, along with the full deposit.

For further information regarding Years 7 & 9 admissions, please contact Ms Joanna Clarke, Registrar, on jco@roedean.co.uk or +44(0)1273 667658 5

Early Entrance Programme (Years 7 & 9)

This process is ideal for pupils for whom Roedean is their first choice. All registered pupils interested in a Year 7 (11+) place and a Year 9 (13+) place will be invited to take part in the Early Entrance Programme – we are offering early testing in addition to our standard entry process. The Early Entrance Programme is designed to fast-track certainty of a place whilst still enabling prospective pupils to take part in our programme of inspiring and challenging activity days. In the Spring of Year 5 (11+ entry) or the Spring of Year 6 (13+ entry), early entry places can be awarded following successful performances in our entrance papers, an interview with the Headmaster, and upon receipt of a supportive reference from the applicants’ current schools. Pupils will also be able to access the Scholarship assessment process in the January preceding September entry.

Stage 1: Experience Days At Roedean, we aim to make the admissions process as enjoyable as possible. Our enduringly popular schedule of activity days and admissions events successfully ensure that all girls feel at ease within the School by the time they enroll and gives 6

each girl an opportunity to shine within her field. Experience days start in the January of Year 5 for both Year 7 and Year 9 early entrance applicants.

Stage 2: Registration The deadline for registration for early entrance testing is the March of Year 5 for Year 7 entry and the November of Year 6 for Year 9 entry. We would be delighted to discuss your daughter’s registration and talk you through the process. Once she is registered, we will keep you updated with any information regarding her entry exams, as well as future events at Roedean which may be of interest.

Stage 2: Assessment Entrance testing in English, Maths and Non-Verbal

Reasoning takes place in the March of Year 5 for Year 7 entry and the March of Year 6 for Year 9 entry. For Year 7 entry, the content of both papers is in line with the National Curriculum expectations in Years 4 & 5. The papers will, however, be challenging, as they are designed to highlight the abilities of the most able pupils.

UK ADMISSIONS For Year 9 entry, the content of the papers is in line with usual expectations of a Year 5-6 pupil, but elements of the papers will also stretch the most able and give them the opportunity to demonstrate their full ability.

Stage 3: Offers Offers are made following the testing day, with the acceptance deadline being in April. In order to secure the place, you will need to return the completed acceptance form, along with the full deposit. For Year 7 entry, the deposit will remain fully refundable until the March preceeding the September of entry. For Year 9, the deposit remains refundable until 20 months prior to entry, namely the January of the year prior to the year of entry.

Stage 4: Taster Day Pupils will be invited to Roedean for a Taster Day in the March of Year 6 for Year 7 entry and the March of Year 7 for Year 9 entry. The day will allow pupils to enjoy some ‘taster lessons’ and other group activities covering a wide range of co-curricular interests. Both year groups will also have the opportunity to take part in Rockpools Day in Year 5 and Discovery Day in Year 6 (please see standard entry process) and participation in these days is encouraged.

Sixth Form Admissions Each year, students join the Roedean Sixth Form from a variety of backgrounds, from schools in the local area to those further afield in the UK, along with international students from over thirty countries around the world. Here is the most common path to Sixth Form entry:

Stage 1: Enquiry If you would like a copy of the prospectus after viewing the website, please fill out our enquiry form or contact the admissions team – we also welcome any other questions you may have.

Stage 2: Visiting the School Visiting the school and meeting the girls is the best way to find out what makes Roedean special. You can either come to an Open Day or have an individual visit – for both, you will be taken on a tour of the school and boarding houses with a student of approximately the same age as your daughter, you will meet the Headmaster, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions of the Director of Admissions. An individual visit during term-time will allow you to experience the school in full swing with students and staff going about their daily life. Visitors often comment on the dynamic, positive, 8

energetic and happy atmosphere of the school, as well as the open and relaxed manner of the girls.

Stage 3: Sixth Form Information Event The Sixth Form offer at Roedean is described in more detail, showing the breadth and huge advantages of our provision for Sixth Form students. Representatives from each department are available to explain what is involved in the study of each of the twentytwo subjects on offer at A Level; this is particularly relevant if your daughter is hoping to pursue subjects which she has not studied previously. Advice is also available during the evening about subject combinations at A Level, especially for those with career aspirations which might have specific subject requirements.

Stage 4: Registering your daughter We would be delighted to discuss your daughter’s registration and talk you through the process. We encourage you to register as soon as possible. Once she is registered, we will keep you updated with any information regarding her entry exams, as well as future events at Roedean which may be of interest, such as the Sixth Form Information Event outlined below. The registration deadline is in the

UK ADMISSIONS October prior to entry. If you would like to apply for a Scholarship, the details and an application form can be found on the website.

Stage 5: Assessment Entry into the Sixth Form is assessed in midNovember by means of Maths and English papers (both one hour long), a Non-Verbal Reasoning paper, and an academic interview. Scholarship Applicants also sit a General Paper. At a later point, after the place has been accepted, students will choose three subjects they would like to study at A Level and sit a 30-minute paper in each of these. This will help place students on the best A Level Programme of Study for them, and will help us to assess whether any academic provision or preparation will be required ahead of the September start.

Stage 6: Offers We are very aware that you will be keen to find out if your daughter has been successful, so offers of places are made to successful candidates at the beginning of December; there is an acceptance deadline of one week. In order to secure the place, you will need to return the completed acceptance form, along with the full deposit. The places offered are dependent on your daughter achieving seven 6-9 grades at GCSE which is the entry standard for Roedean Sixth Form, together with the required grades for her chosen A Level subjects, as published in the Sixth Form Curriculum Booklet.

Fees and Charges Registration Fee £150 is payable with the application, and is non-refundable.

Deposit For UK-based students, a deposit (Acceptance Deposit) of half a term’s fee is paid to accept the offer at Roedean. Unless stated otherwise, all deposits are refunded without interest after the pupil has left the School and after all fees and ‘extras’ have been settled. If the pupil does not take up the accepted place, the deposit is non-refundable.

Fees for 2021-2022 These are the termly fees for the academic year 2021-2022. At Year 7 in particular, we believe that this exciting fee structure allows access to the school to a wider range of students than has previously been the case.

FEES AND CHARGES

Charges for Extra Subjects and Activities Full details of subjects/activities offered are available on the Fees page of our website. Written permission of the parent or guardian is required before a pupil can be accepted for tuition in an extra subject/ activity. Since payment has to be made to the teachers concerned, subjects or activities may only be terminated at the end of the term, for which half of one term’s notice in writing is required. If a subject or activity is discontinued during a term, the whole of that term’s charge will be payable. Where pupils require private academic coaching, a separate written contract between the parents and the School will be completed.
