The Quarterly Review of Roedean Brighton and Roedean South Africa

Head’s Introduction A brief visit to Brighton by Roedean South Africa in April 2018 has sparked a wonderful new relationship. On opposite sides of the world, our two schools were founded by sisters, but have not had enough direct contact in recent decades. However, the girls who came from Johannesburg to Brighton as part of a literary tour of England made a strong impression on their counterparts here and captured the imagination of our girls. Perhaps it was their enthusiasm and openness, perhaps their intelligence and curiosity, or perhaps it was their brilliant performance in Chapel of Mahlo A Bona Ke Metso [https:// vimeo.com/265409842]. Whatever the reason, girls from both schools felt a very immediate connection and recognised their joint heritage. It was obvious from that point on that the girls at both schools were keen to forge a strong relationship. When 16 Roedean girls, 3 members of staff and I visited Roedean South Africa in November, we were welcomed with open arms. The incredible similarities between our schools were immediately obvious - wonderful locations and grounds, a strong and enduring connection with the schools’ founding values, a commitment too empowering young women to be future leaders, a warm and nurturing environment, and fantastic girls with great spirit and a drive to make a difference.

Roedean’s visit to South Africa

I am delighted that our two schools are already working together on joint projects, such as this review. Many are now communicating with each other, and students in their final year are considering spending a Gap Year at their sister school. Our visit to Roedean South Africa in November really was an incredible experience, and I hope that it was just the start of a stronger relationship. I look forward to seeing what amazing things we can achieve together. Oliver Blond Executive Head, Roedean

Dawn visits 10 Downing Street for CNY Dawn T (Yr8) and Mrs Wu were honoured to visit 10 Downing Street and the Prime Minister on Thursday 31st January. They were attending a Community Day to Mark Chinese New Year, and Dawn was one of 53 children from around the country. Dawn was selected after winning a number of Chinese cultural competitions and having had a story published in the Chinese press last year. Theresa May met the children and made traditional paper-cuts with them. The photos are of Dawn and Mrs Wu outside 10 Downing Street and of a paper-cut signed by the PM. We look forward to seeing some of the official photos. Well done to Dawn and Mrs Wu for being chosen for this visit!

World Read Aloud Day The Junior School celebrated World Read Aloud Day by sharing their favourite stories with each other.

Good Luck! We wish our Hockey Coach, Ms Lisa Deetlefs all the best for the trials at the National Women’s Hockey Camp. If Lisa is selected, she will be in the SA Hockey team that will play in the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in June this year.

Street Dance sisters to represent England at the World Dance Championships! Roedean is incredibly proud of the recent dance achievements of India and Amelie H in Year 7 and 10 – both competed at the Essex Street Dance Championships on 27 January, and India won two Top 5 trophies in Under 14 Advanced Solos and Duos. These results are just the latest in a long line of successes for her, including in the Quads and Team events in the South Coast Championships. India’s older sister, Amelie, won the Sussex Under 16 Advanced Solo category, an outstanding achievement, and she has also had great results recently, particularly in the Under 18 Advanced Duo category, with her partner Edith, who is in the year above at Brighton and Hove High School. Amelie and India’s successes in the most recent championships mean that they have both qualified to represent England this summer in the World Dance Championships, which are being held at the UK’s home of dance, Blackpool. Fantastic as this is in itself, India’s achievement is all the more impressive because she is only 11 years old, and therefore has another 18 months in the under 14 category! India said, ‘I am so proud to have made it to the Worlds. It will be the most amazing experience to compete with the best in the world!’ Amelie has now qualified in three categories: Under 16 Advanced Solo, Under 18 Advanced Duo, and Under 18 Advanced Team. We cannot wait to hear how the World Championships go, and what an achievement for these sisters to represent their country!

Book Review ‘Am I Normal Yet’ – Holly Bourne. ‘Am I Normal Yet’ is the first book of ‘The Spinster Club’ trilogy by Holly Bourne, and it follows Evie’s recovery journey from severe OCD. She was used to a life of medication and therapy, but as her dosage goes down all of that is left behind, and now she has a fresh start at college. Here, no one knows of her illness, and

Evie intends to keep it that way. All she wants is to feel normal; to meet new friends, like Lottie and Amber, and maybe even get herself a normal boyfriend too. But is that too much to ask? Could all this secrecy end in disaster, and the thing that Evie dreads most, relapse? I urge all teenagers, and many adults alike, to read this powerful novel. It informs readers on very relevant, yet stigmatised themes, such as mental health and feminism, with much-needed depth and understanding. It particularly focuses on the trivialisation of mental illness, an everyday issue that many people may do without realising, with offhand comments that are all too familiar. The narrative of this novel is natural and authentic, and with plenty of humour, so whilst its message is hard-hitting, it is also a very enjoyable read. If you are fans of Sara Barnard or Juno Dawson, or are looking for a book with an uplifting message, or a strong female lead, then I strongly suggest this. Jane S (Yr10)

Alex’s Speed Skating – 17th in the world and representing GB Alex S (Yr7) had a busy weekend which involved an intensive four hour training session with her Dutch Long Track coach in The Hague in January, followed by competing in Short Track at the Nottingham Open. At the competition in Nottingham, Alex improved on her Short Track 500m previous personal best time by almost 1 sec (56.699sec), and, in so doing, she has now formally qualified for the ISU Star Class series next year. Alex is only the third female Under 17 speed skater in the country to have qualified for this elite programme with competitors from 14 countries across Western Europe (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland). This means that she is one of only 42 Junior D (U13) girls from across Europe who have qualified for the Star Class programme. She has improved her global ranking for the 333m and is currently ranked 17th in the world. Alex has also been selected by UK Longtrack to represent Great Britain at two major European championships this year. The first of these championships being the ISU Country Match competition in Hamar, Norway on the 23rd & 24th February. Alex will be competing in a higher category than her current one (U15) as she has the qualifying time to be able to do so. She will be representing Great Britain at the Viking Race (the European Youth Championships) in Heerenveen, Netherlands on March 1st & 2nd. At the end of March, Alex has qualified for, and will be competing in, two British National Championship competitions, namely the British Short Track Championships and the British Long Track Championships. We all wish Alex well, and cannot wait to hear how she performs!

In January, two new members of staff in important positions joined Roedean Brighton – Miss Wakeling, as Director of Sport, and Mrs Woodbridge, as Director of Drama. We interviewed them to find out a little more about them:

How are you finding Roedean so far?

How are you finding Roedean so far?

Being part of a school where the girls are happy, inspirational and hard-working and where the Physical Education department puts pupils learning at the centre of every decision they make, makes working at Roedean an absolute joy. I love it already.

Absolutely wonderful. I really enjoy teaching the girls, I love working in the theatre with all my colleagues. Everyone has been really helpful and greeted me with a smile on their face. I feel really welcomed.

Why did you want to teach at Roedean?

Why did you want to teach at Roedean?

Being a successful middle leader in today’s changing world of Physical Education is something that has always excited me. I wanted to work in a school that shares my belief of creating, fostering and enhancing the love of a variety of physical activities for all girls so that they want to go on to pursue a life time of physical activity and even encourage others to do so.

I have directed a couple of productions at Roedean for the Shakespeare Schools Festival seven years ago. I really enjoyed working with the stage management team, it was so professional and reflected well on the rest of the school. It was very well organised, and the evening turned out to be a great success. I thought that this seems to be very vibrant place for theatre and I really wanted to share my professional drama knowledge with pupils in this environment.

What is your background?

What is your background?

When I was at school, I got involved in every activity going, I loved playing, competing and eventually excelling in several different sports. For me being physically active was a lot of fun. I want you girls to enjoy your physical journey as much as I enjoyed and still enjoy mine. I played in the 1st and mixed lacrosse team at University, have a passion for sailing, have completed two marathons and am currently training for a ½ Ironman. However, my biggest achievement is getting others involved along the way. Three of my friends dipped in and out of my training for the Edinburgh Marathon and this year they are going to be running the Brighton Marathon alongside me.

I was an actress for many years, but I was an educational practitioner at the Globe theatre. I met lots of different pupils and I worked in TIE (Theatre in Education) during my early career. I visited about 100 schools in 1 year including schools in Brooklyn, New York and I really liked the environment. Eventually, I got a bit fed up of only seeing one class for an hour and a half and never meeting them again and I thought it would be great to develop pupils from year 7 right through to year 13. I then decided to retrain and do a PGCE and begin teaching. I did find it a bit difficult to begin with, I called the staff room the green room, and I had to get up quite a lot earlier than I usually would for Theatre. I managed to adapt, and I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching since.

Who is your sporting inspiration? There are so many inspirational, pioneering women who have created unprecedented goals, to name but a few is a difficult task. Lily Par however has got to be one of my all-time favourites. She set up a women’s football team during WW1 when playing women’s football wasn’t the done thing. Despite the FA doing everything they could to shut women’s football down she continued to play with her factory team scoring more than 1000 goals during her 31 years playing.

Is Roedean all you hoped it would be? All I had hoped, and more.

What are your hopes and dreams for Roedean in the future? I want Roedean to be alive, I want to be able to hear and feel the buzz of activity in every direction, on every pitch, Astroturf or court. I want to stand by the swimming pool and look out and see girls of all abilities and ages playing a range of different sports, having fun and developing their physical literacy. Interviewed by Maria V and Amelia K Page 4

Who is your acting inspiration? When I was growing up there was an incredible Oscar Winning actress called Glenda Jackson. I was really inspired by her. One day when I was working in Bedford Square in London, I bumped into her on my lunch break! Back then she was a Labour MP and I was speechless.

Is Roedean all you hoped it would be? Absolutely, and much more.

What are your hopes and dreams for Roedean in the future? I am really excited about future productions and there are lots of plays and musicals to look forward to. I will be to inviting theatre companies in to do workshops with different years. I’m also planning to have professional actors speak about plays that they have performed in that we are studying. I am looking forward to directing productions so that students can enjoy the experience. Interviewed by Maria V

OR Corner ‘Mr England fired gas canisters at us in a chemistry lesson!’ This week, I got the chance to talk to Dr Libby Thomas (Hamilton, No. 2, 1988-95) who is an old Head Girl from Roedean Brighton and has gone into the world of medicine as an A&E doctor. She gave us a great insight into her journey through Roedean and what it taught her. Her Roedean journey began in House 2 where she told us about the incredible house mistress she had, Ms Scott. Here she learnt lessons of leadership and built strong relationships with girls and she became head girl in year 12. At this time, everyone in Roedean was a full boarder and their main sport was lacrosse. Girls would also have to go to chapel Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday! Libby told us that Roedean taught her much: from lessons as small as having to clean your teeth twice a day, to understanding all of the different cultures and backgrounds of the girls which gave her the knowledge to help navigate to the diversity of life beyond school. She mentioned that full boarding gave her insight into various different nationalities and allowed her to relate to her colleagues from around the world. She has memories of trying to learn Nigerian dance in one of the house 2 dorms with her friends. She also revealed that Roedean taught her much about self confidence and public speaking. Very similar to now, she said that there were always opportunities to speak in chapels and assemblies and you could never have got away without stepping up to the stage at least once in your time at Roedean. Another lesson she learnt was the importance of the community both in and out of school or work she said that had many trips out to the near community to hand out food and help as much as they could. Being head girl, she learnt many skills of leadership whilst working as part of the school. This role gave her many opportunities like having tea with the headmistress and keeping the links that Roedean used to have with the navy, she got Anastasia T for being selected as a member of the South African U17 Water Polo team at the European Union National Junior Women’s Water Polo Tournament in Brno, Czech Republic, in 2017, where the team won gold, and in August 2018 for being selected as a member of the South African U18 Water Polo team at the Junior Women World Championship in Beograd, Serbia. Page 7

the chance to spend a week on a navy boat with the other four heads of houses travelling from Gibraltar to Portsmouth. From the links with the navy she made many amazing memories and learnt many valuable lessons in the importance of helping others. Although the lessons we learn through school are incredibly important in propelling us into life beyond, the memories we make with our friends both in lessons and out can be equally as valuable. Dr Libby Thomas has memories of being lined up and the back of one of the chemistry labs with the rest of the class and Mr England (who at this time was the women’s cricket selector for England) fired gas canisters at them to practice catching! One of the most eventful days for Libby was probably the Upper Sixth end of year prank. Their aim was not to be too destructive whilst still leaving behind a mark of their year in the minds of the students and teachers. The began by sneaking out of Lawrence house at around 6:00 in the morning and setting up speakers over the quad. By 6:30 they had set off the fire alarm and the sleepy faces of students and teachers were trudging out getting in their lines to be registered. At this point, all of year 13 had hidden behind the slope that leads to the carpark and the speakers were blasting out ‘Wake up it’s a beautiful morning’. The girls then came up singing and dancing; it certainly would have been a morning to remember for the rest of the school. As an A&E doctor Libby Thomas has thoroughly enjoyed the world of medicine and said it allows you to find the art in science. At school her favourite subjects were always Maths, Science and Sport and she went on to take Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths A level. She said that one of the main things she enjoys and loves about medicine is having the ability to be there when people are in need and being able to help or comfort them in any way possible. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to talk to Dr Libby Thomas (Hamilton, No. 2, 1988-95) and we are very thankful that she shared all of her experiences with us.

Farm Update Roedean is delighted to announce the safe arrival of two lambs on the Farm. Baby J (now a mother and no longer a ‘Baby’) gave birth two one black and one white lamb on Friday 15 March. All are well, and we wait with baited breath for the other pregnant ewes to give birth!

ONE ROEDEAN

Roedean South Africa celebrates its 116th birthday! On Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd March 2019 Roedean School (SA) celebrated its 116th birthday. Friday kicked start with the entire school (all 817 pupils plus staff) attending a joint assembly in Founders Hall. The Junior and Senior Choir sang beautifully and we were all afforded the opportunity of a trip down memory lane with Mrs Val Thomas (nee Lister) and Mrs Jane Hulley (nee Roberts), old Roedean girls, who, this year, are celebrating their 60 year reunion. Assembly was followed by a breakfast picnic in the school grounds and the enthusiastic singing of the school songs. Mrs Rogers and the youngest pupil at Roedean School, Stella Eagar aged 5, cut the birthday to loud applause. We were then delighted to watch an incredible Diving display and the very anticipated Inter House Swimming Gala – with the winners (of both Spirit and Participation) being Bears House!! This truly was a very happy, fun celebration and an excellent representation of the Roedean Spirit. Saturday started with the Old Girls challenging the current girls in Squash – the matches were highly competitive, resulting in the Old Girls as deserving winners of the Tugwell/Louis Squash Trophy. A beautiful Chapel service, filled with inspiration and thanks giving followed and then the opportunity to mingle and reconnect with Old Roedeanians – spanning from 4 Years On to 71 Years On. A formal lunch, incorporating thanks giving, school songs and toasts in abundance followed. With over 200 Old Girls attending, it really did illustrate not only the happy times spent whilst at pupil at Roedean, but also the lifelong relationship and impact that Roedean School SA has on all its pupils – past and present.

New Executive Head for Roedean South Africa Congratulations to Mrs Fiona Rogers on her formal appointment as the Executive Head of Roedean South Africa, which took effect on 1 March 2019. Fiona has been at the School since 2005, and has been Deputy Principal: Director of Curriculum since 2008. She is also a wellrespected figure within the broader education community. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Botany, and a Master’s Degree in Ecology. Fiona has been instrumental in driving the academic success of Roedean South Africa, while always ensuring that every girl is supported so that she can realise her full potential. She is passionate about curriculum innovation, and examples of her interventions and projects are the Cognitive Education Programme, IT Integration, and, most recently, the Intern Programme for Teachers of Mathematics and Science (in partnership with CIDA Trust), implemented in 2018. We all congratulate Fiona Rogers on her appointment. We welcome contributions from all parts of the Roedean community.
