Music

Music The Music department at Roedean proudly presents a rich and entertaining programme of diverse events and performances, involving pupils throughout the school and we extend a warm invitation for you to join us. Highlights this year include the Around the World in 80 Minutes Gala Concert (music inspired through references to different countries, cities and travel)) in November and a Name That TUNE Spectacular Gala concert in February (all styles of music linked by different names), involving all our major performance groups. This year’s concert themes and some of the repertoire have been chosen by a team of music scholars and musicians. The programme of master classes and workshops led by renowned international professional musicians, feature again this year as do the popular teatime recitals. Some of the recitals will showcase student performances resulting from the master classes and workshops, whilst others will be informal concerts for any of our musicians to take part in. We shall also be working alongside the Drama department again this year to produce the hit music theatre show, Hairspray, in the Spring term. Our annual Brighton Festival Fringe concert in May features our extended community choir in the major choral work Carmina Burana and Roedean soloists in concerto performances with the school orchestra, giving our talented musicians the opportunity of a grand scale solo performance in one of the largest fringe festivals in the country. Teatime recitals will be open to all the immediate Roedean community and families. All other events are open to guests as well as the Roedean community and we warmly invite you to join us for this year’s concert performances. Veronica Fewkes Director of Music

Year 8 Gamelan Workshop & Teatime Recital John Pawson from the Royal College of Music returns to Roedean to lead all Year 8 students in an exotic day of Indonesian Gamelan performance workshops. A gamelan is a set of instruments consisting mainly of gongs, metallophones and drums. The word ‘gamelan’ means ‘to hammer’. Gamelan music is found mainly in Bali and Java. It has political and religious roots and plays an important part in sustaining traditional life. It can be heard at celebrations and theatre performances. It is used to accompany shadow puppet plays, poetry and drama. It is not normally written down but passed on through oral tradition - players learn by mastering techniques and memorising the music. It is played together as a group and emphasises community over individual values. The day will conclude with a Teatime Recital, to which our Year 8 parents/ guardians are warmly invited.
