Ournewstudentshavenowsettledinwell,andintheloweryears areenjoyingtheirWildFridaysand‘Head,HeartandHands’ lessons,whichallseethemgetoutoftheclassroom,whilstour Year12studentsarenowfullyimmersedintheirCommunity ActionProjects.YoucanreadmoreabouttheHHHandCAP programmesintheSchoolHighlights.Thesearesuchvital elementsinensuringthatourstudentsthrivebothinsideand outsidetheclassroom,andthattheyhaveanethosfirmlybased onhelpingothersintheircommunity.
IthasalsobeenwonderfultowelcomeourUkrainianstudents, andsoIwanttotakethisopportunitytoextendmygratitudeto everyonewhohassupportedtheUkrainianBursaryappeal.As youwillreadonPage7,theresponsehasbeenincredible,andit issowonderfultohearfromDarynaabouthowmuchherplace hereatRoedeanmeanstoher.

AllofourYear12studentstakepartinaCommunityActionProject (CAP).Theaim,istoincreasetheirengagementinthelocal community,andtohelpthestudentsmakeapositivechangeinthe world.Theyhaveachoicebetween14variedprojects,andsocould findthemselves:
WorkingasaclassroomassistantatDownsViewSpecialSchool;Taking partinoneofthreeprojectsatStMark’sPrimary–thisyear,thishas includedhelpingthemdeveloptheirgardens,repurposinganexisting buildingintoaminilibraryforReception,ordevelopingand implementingtheirownprojectidea;Spendingtimewiththeresidents attheBlindVeterans,planningandfacilitatingmeaningfulactivities; Ortheymaychoosetosupportstudentswithmoreseverespecial needsattheChaileyHeritageFoundation.
Ortheycouldremainonsiteandjoin:CommunityMusic–organising performancesinlocalnursinghomes,andraisingmoneyforNewNote Orchestra;CommunityTextiles,learningaboutclothingsustainability, andmakingquiltsfortheelderly;orCommunityCooking,learning cookingskills,andmakingfoodforlocalgroups.
ThenewestadditiontotheprogrammeistheJuniorRoedean Academy,whichsees90studentsaweekfromlocalprimaryschools visitingRoedeanforarangeofenrichmentactivitiesledbytheYear12 students.

Weweredelightedearlierthistermwhen RoedeanfeaturedinanarticleinCountryLife Magazine.Thearticlelookedathowschoolswith coastalsettingshaveanaturaladvantagein termsofoutdoorlife,character-building,health andhappiness.Withoursettingbythesea,and recentChannelswim,Roedeanwastheheadline schoolfeaturedinthearticle.
SeniorMathsChallenge
Welldonetothe107studentswhotookpartin thisyear’sSeniorMathematicalChallenge.36 wereawardedBronze,22Silverand13Gold. ParticularcongratulationsgotoEuran(Yr12)who scored102andGulang(Yr13),whoscored100. ThethresholdforGoldis76ormore,sothey performedbrilliantlyandhavequalifiedforthe BritishMathsOlympiad!
CongratulationsaswelltoKira,whofoundout recentlythatsheplaced4thintheGerman MathsOlympiad,shewasalsothetopgirlinthe competition!
Head,HeartandHand
OurEnrichmentprogrammeforYears7,8and9hasbeeninfullswing thisterm,withover15differentactivitysessionsacrossthethreeyear groups.The‘Head,HeartandHand’(HHH)philosophyhasbeenfirmly embeddedintotheKeyStage3Curriculumbecauseweknowhow importantitistoprovidestudentswitharoundededucation.Overthe year,thestudentswillbeabletocompletecoursessuchastextiles, cookeryandfirstaid,aswellasexplorephilosophicalideas,develop confidencewithpublicspeaking,andacquireskillsinoutdooreducation.
ContinuityandChangeintheArt Department
AsthethemeofourOctoberOpenDaythisyearwas ‘ContinuityandChange’theArtDepartmentre-enactedone ofourfabulousarchivephotographs.Oneofourlifemodels dressedupinanauticalthemedoutfitfromthecostume cupboardandrecreatedaposesimilartoasailorduringa Roedeanartclassin1907.

HouseCompetitions
OurnewandenhancedprogrammeofHouseCompetitionshasbeen infullswingthisterm.FollowingonfromafewyearswhereCovid madeinter-housecompetitionsdifficult,thegirlshavereallythrown themselvesbackintothemnowthattheyhavebeenre-launched.
Thefirsttwocompetitionswere‘HouseShoutand‘HouseTrashion’.For theShout,theHouseseachcreatedandperformedaHouseChant(you canwatchavideoofithere).Forthe‘Trashion’,theHousescreatedthree outfitseachoutofHousecolourbinbags,whichwerethenmodelled brilliantlybyYear7sfromeachHouse.
ThiswasswiftlyfollowedbyaSpellingBee,withJunior,InterandSeniors competitions,andaCrossCountryrace–whichsawtheallimportant HousePointsawardedforthefastest10runnersaswellasforeveryrunner fromeachHousewhocompletedthecourse.
Thelatestcompetition,isonethathasbeenahighlightoftheInter-House competitionsformanyyears–andoneI’msuremanyORswillremember takingpartin–HouseDance.Thisyear,thethemewassomeonewho inspiredthem,whichledtoincrediblyvariedchoicessuchasBobFosse, GretaThunbergandOneDirection.
Ofcourse,ORswillbedesperatetoknowhowyourHouseisdoinginthe competitions,andtheresultssofarare:
RemembranceDay
TomarkRemembranceDay,weheldabeautifulChapel service,whichincludedMaryHenderson,thePresidentofthe ORA,andtheyoungestgirlintheSchool,layingwreathsto rememberthosewhohavebeenlostinconflict.Following this,students,staffandtheORAPresidentandVicePresident,gatheredintheFrontQuadtomarkthetwominutesilence.EllenplayedtheLastPostandRouse beautifully,despitetheRoedeanwinddesperatelytryingto blowhermusicaway.
ThepoppiesinthisphotographweremadebyourYear10 Designstudents,thepoppiesareinlaidwiththepoem‘If’by RudyardKipling.
AutumnGalaConcert
Friday18thNovembersawthemostwonderfulgalaconcert intheSchool’sChapel,featuringawholehostofmusical itemswithafocusonnature.
Eightdifferentensembles,includingover160musicians, performedabrilliantrepertoire,whichrangedfrom MendelssohntoMarvinGayeandfromEricCoatestoVan Morrison.FifteenpianistsperformedintheCarnivalofthe Animals,thefamousSwanandtheElephantwere characterisedbeautifullybytwosoloists,andfourstudents alsojumpedatthechallengeoftakingupthebatonto conductindividualmovements.
TheChapelwasbathedincolouredlight,whichrelatedto thepiecesbeingperformed,creatingasensoryexperience fortheaudienceof350concert-goers.

Thiswasheldasahybridmeeting(inpersonandviazoom) attheCaledonianClubinLondonSW1.Wearedelightedto welcomeDiWu(No.1,2003-05)totheORACommittee.In addition,98leaversfrom2022wereelectedtojointheORA togetherwith6formerstaff.Welcomeall!
EricaFaircloth,ORATreasurer,presentedtheAccountsfor theORA.EmmaSmellie,TrusteeoftheORScholarshipFund (aregisteredcharity)wasdelightedtoreportthatthereare nowfourgirlsinthesixthformwhoareinreceiptofawards fromtheORScholarshipFund.JaneAldred,Membership Secretaryeloquentlydescribedthevariedarticlesinthe 2021issueoftheOldRoedeanians’Magazineand welcomedanycontributionsforthenextissuewhichwillbe publishedinearly2023.ReportswerereceivedfromAmelia Balthazor,NoëlleChase,CarolineBowenandMary HendersonaboutORSport-nowencompassingNetball, Golf,Tennis,HockeyandSailing.Theyweredelightedto reporttheinvolvementofmanyoftheyoungerORsinthese activities.
VicePresidentNoëlleChaseupdatedthe meetingontheORAHeritageProjects.The Appealhadbeenlaunchedatthebeginning ofSeptember.Shewasdelightedtoreport thatsufficientdonationshadalreadybeen receivedtostartworkontheconservationof theSylviaLawrenceFriezeinNo.3,andthat wewerewellonthewaytoraisingthefunds fortheAstrolabe–needingonlyafurther £4,400toreachthatproject’sfundraising target.TheprocessforobtainingListed BuildingConsentfortheAstrolabeis underway.
Inthe18monthsuptothelaunchoftheAppealtheORA hadfundedtheupfrontcostofobtainingconditionreports andestimatesfromwallpainting,paperandtextile conservators,stonemasons,fountainexpertsandceramics conservatorstothetuneof£6,945.This,togetherwiththe costofobtaininglistedbuildingconsent,formstheORA’s donationtotheAppeal.
OliverBlondlateraddressedthemeetinggivingareporton thesummer’sexcellentexamresults,thewideandvaried activitiesattheschool–academic,sports,theartsandcocurricular.Healsolookedbackathistenurewhichhasseen ustop700pupils,havinggrownfromthemid300sin2013, whereovertimethefocusontheexperienceand opportunitiesattheschool,wordofmouthandthequality ofthestaffhasservedtocreateavirtuouscircleasthe schoolgrowsinpopularityandmoreandmoregirls(and theirparents)wanttocometotheRoedean.
Afterthemeeting,thosewhoattendedthemeetingin personwereabletoretiretotheLibraryattheCaledonian ClubforDrinksandCanapés.

ItwaswonderfulinSeptembertobringbacktheORLondonLunch,aftera threeyearbreakduetoCovid.On29thSeptember,justover40ORs, formerstaffmembers,TrusteesandcurrentstaffgatheredattheBluebird inChelseaforlunch.Beforelunchwasservedtherewastimetomingle andchatwitheachotheroverawelcomedrink,beforebeingseatedfor thepre-lunchspeeches.
GinnyStephen(deTrense,No.3,1954-60),Vice-Presidentofthe Corporationspokefirst,andgavethankstoMrBlond,asthiswillbehislast LondonLunchasHeadmaster.MrBlondthenspokehimself,withashort updateontheSchool,withDrHobbs(DeputyHead:Academic)talking brieflyabouttheChannelSwimteam,anendeavourwhichheinstigated atRoedean.MrBlondthenfocussedhistalkonespionageandORs, consideringthefictionalandnon-fictionalORsinvolvedintheintelligence services.Thetalkwasinspiredbysomestudentswhohadaskedtheir teacherifanystaffmembersatRoedeanhaveworkedasspies.The examplesMrBlondfoundtoincludeinhisspeechsuggestedverymuch thatitisfarmorelikelythatthestudentsthemselveshaveorwillbecome spies!

Thenextprojectthatwewouldliketoprogressisthe Sylvia LawrencefriezeinNo.1 “Morning” isabeautifulpink, goldandgreyportrayalofahostoftrumpetplayingangels welcominginthesunrise,portrayedwithstreaksofgold acrossamorningskyandpinktingestothecheeksofthe angels.Itispaintedonpaperattachedtotextilewhichisin turngluedtotheplasterwall.Thepaperisnowveryfragile, withsplitting,crackingandlossestothepaint.Thelime plasterbehindthefriezeiscrumblingandpastrepairswith heavyadhesivehavepulledtheplasteroffthewall.
ListedBuildingConsentisneededfor thisprojectastheconservation/ restorationworkusingpaperand wallpaintingconservatorsmustbe doneoffsite.TheTargetforthis projectis £8,200.
Wewouldalsoliketoprogressthe conservationoftheensigns. £15,000 willenableustoconserve oneofthe BattleofJutland ensigns andwillalsogoalongway towardstheconservationofthe HMSVernonensign flownonDDayattheschool.
Whileresearchingtheensignswehavebeendelightedto findanotherBattleofJutlandensignnowdisplayedinthe wardroomatHMSCollingwood.Therewerefourensigns flownontheshipduringthebattle.Thereisalsoaroyal connection,PrinceAlbert,latertobeGeorgeVIwasa midshipmanonHMSCollingwoodattheBattleofJutland andhewasalsoaboardtheshipwhenthegirlsfrom RoedeanvisitedtheFleetin1914,mentioningthevisitinhis diarieswhicharestoredintheRoyalArchivesatWindsor Castle.MoreaboutthisinafutureHeritageProjectsupdate!

UniversityInterviewPractice:Thisisparticularly importantforgirlsapplyingtoOxbridge,orfordegreessuch asMedicine,astheinterviewprocessforthesecanbevery intense!Everyyearweorganisepracticeinterviewsforthe girlswithmembersofourcommunity.
CareersTalks:DuringtheSpringTermweholdaseriesof Careers’Talks(theSixthFormPathwaysLectures)forour Year12and13students.Theaimoftheseistointroduce themtocareerstheymaynothaveconsideredbefore,and todeveloptheirunderstandingofdifferentroles,andthe differentpathsintothem.
CareersFair:OurannualCareersFairisanopportunityfor studentstomeetwithcontributorsfromawidevarietyof differentcareersandsectors,andisopentotheyounger girlsaswell.Nextyearwewillbereturningtoanin-person fairon14thMarch,andsowearelookingforcontributors whocancometotheSchoolinthelateafternoontosupport thisevent.
