What's On: Roedean Theatre

What’s On | 2021-22

WELCOME TO THE NEW ROEDEAN THEATRE At Roedean, we are delighted to be returning to a full programme of events and performances, including the wonderful global collaborative project, All Together Now, and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. After such a long period of uncertainty for the Performing Arts and theatres, it is exciting to hold live shows, performances, and events again, and to see our young performers inhabiting the Theatre once more. We have returned to a newly refurbished venue, with an increased capacity of over 350 individual seats, dramatically improved acoustics, and enhanced technical capabilities. The striking red of the seating and stage curtain lend the Theatre impressive grandeur, not unlike that you would find in a professional performance space. Not only is the Theatre at the heart of school life, it also plays an important role for the wider community, and we are very proud to have such an impressive venue at Roedean. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

THE ROEDEAN BOX OFFICE

The new Roedean Theatre is fantastic. It has been refurbished wonderfully, and the improvement is outstanding. The original venue opened in 1994, and was well-loved, but in desperate need of modernisation; it is now an excellent space which will be used by the entire school community and beyond. I cannot wait to enjoy a wide range of performances and events there – thank you to everyone who contributed to the hugely successful transformation! Oliver Blond Headmaster

AVENUE Q A ‘THEATRE BY DESIGN’ PRODUCTION

Theatre by Design, in collaboration with Apollo Theatre Arts & Roedean Theatre, are proud to present Avenue Q. Winner of the Tony Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book, the hilarious Avenue Q tells the timeless story of a recent college graduate trying to find his way in the world. Set in New York City, we are introduced to fresh-faced Princeton as he struggles to find his purpose: meeting friends, finding love, losing love, and finding it again, along the way. Inspired by the beloved children’s show Sesame Street, Avenue Q creates a puppet-filled world that is a little more reflective of the difficult, R-rated realities that we face when we learn that real life isn’t as simple as we dreamed it might be – but perhaps, suggests Avenue Q, life is all the more colorful and worthwhile for it. This production of Avenue Q has been developed to showcase the exciting local talent right on the south coast of England and is surely something not to be missed. Please be advised that despite featuring puppets this show includes adult themes & offensive languages. WEDS & FRI 7:30PM THURS & SAT 5PM & 8PM TICKETS FROM £15 FRIENDS OF RT 20%off

MATILDA A ROEDEAN PRODUCTION

Matilda The Musical, inspired by the bestselling children’s book by Roald Dahl, has won over 99 international awards and is one of the longest running musicals in the West End. Roedean is proud to present the junior version in its first year of release. Matilda is very academic, but her parents see this as an inconvenience, as her mum cares far more for the bingo she attends every day, and her dad illegally sells cars that are not fit for the road. When her parents finally send her to school Matilda discovers that she has new powers to combat the evil Ms Trunchbull and to assist the frightened Miss Honey. The book by Denis Kelly and the original songs by Tim Minchin such as When I grow Up and Revolting Children can now be put into context, and you can experience how the extraordinary Matilda strives for a better life and succeeds, when she is able to pursue her love for learning. The cast will mainly consist of students from the lower school, while the orchestra will involve all years.

RENT A ‘THEATRE BY DESIGN’ PRODUCTION

Theatre by Design in collaboration with Apollo Theatre Arts & Roedean Theatre are proud to present the production of Rent. Based on Puccini’s beloved opera La Bohème, Rent follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, struggles to find his place in the world; his roommate Roger, an HIV-positive musician, wonders how he will leave his mark before he dies. Mimi and Angel look for true love as they face the harsh reality of life as HIV-positive young people, while the businesslike Joanne seeks fidelity from her wild-child performance artist girlfriend Maureen. The group’s dreams, losses, and love stories weave through the musical’s narration to paint a stunningly raw and emotional portrait of the gritty bohemian world of New York City in the late 1980s, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. This production of Rent has been developed to showcase the exciting new talent entering the performing arts industry and is surely something not to be missed.
