Ukrainian Bursary Appeal 1
Introduction Roedean has long provided a home and an education for those in need. From our very earliest days, we have provided bursaries and scholarships to those for whom a Roedean education would otherwise be out of reach, or who find themselves in times of hardship. We are still in contact with Old Roedeanians who came to us as Jewish refugees in World War II, who have told us how transformational the opportunity to attend Roedean was. Often this support has been provided due to the generosity of our community, whether through the Old Roedeanians’ Scholarship Fund, or through donations to the School’s Bursary Fund. It is always heart-warming to see future generations of Roedeanians being supported by past and current Roedeanians. As a community, we are deeply moved by the impact of the war in Ukraine, and the difficult circumstances many Ukrainians now find themselves in, being forced to leave behind their homes, their family and friends, and their communities. It is important to us to do everything we can to provide support to them. This has become even more apparent now we have begun to meet with some of the families who have reached the UK. Some families arrive in the UK with very few belongings, having had to leave so much behind, often including their father and brothers. We have already received several applications from students who will be coming to the UK, or who are already here, under the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Our hope is that together with you, our Roedean family, we can provide 110% Bursaries to these students. Thank you in advance for showing how warm, welcoming and supportive Roedeanians are to those in need of our help.

The Aim We have already been contacted by several ORs and Parents who are interested in finding out how they can help support Ukrainian students. We have therefore set up a bursary fund to support these students.

Our target for this appeal is just £50,000, this would provide support for two years to one student.
Day bus travel to and from School Full School uniform and Sports Kit Extra-curricular activities Excursions and Trips Language support
Providing this extra level of support will mean that the girls will be able to take full advantage of their time at Roedean, and all of the opportunities available to them here both inside and outside the classroom.
Our aim is, through funding from the School and your support, to be able to offer up to ten students 110% Day Girl Bursary places, meaning that the funding will not only cover their school fees, but also:

Item Sponsorship
We know that pressures on living costs are high at the moment, but we also recognise that the Roedean family is a very generous one, with community at its heart, and so we know that many of you will want to support this appeal and these students.
Full year or term sponsorship ranges from £8,300 to £25,000. Sponsorship at this level would also mean that you become a member of our 1885 Major Donor Society.
In addition to covering school fees, we are also aiming to provide support for a range of additional items. These start at as little as £10 a month over a year, and are shown in the table
All gifts, whether large or small, will help us reach our target, and to help we have broken down what your donation will mean for the recipient.

Thank you Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to welcoming the students to Roedean in September, and we are incredibly grateful for your support to help us do so. We are very pleased that six of the students will also be joining us this month to begin settling in to Roedean. If your generosity is such that we raise more than the target, then we will be able to use these funds to ensure that even more girls, either from Ukraine or from elsewhere, are able to join Roedean through our Bursary Fund. 5

When Ukraine was invaded I, along with the whole student body, felt shock, horror and disbelief- but most of all, we felt so helpless as we watched the atrocities unfold. And now, as Head Girl, I know I speak for the all the students when I say that we are so happy at the prospect of welcoming Ukrainian pupils to Roedean in September. We hope that with time in our nurturing community, they will eventually find some peace and joy returning to their lives, after such traumatic experiences in their childhood years. Jemima Head Girl
