Introduction Hello and welcome to Go Green Week 2010! This plans to be an action packed, fun filled week looking at some of many aspects of ‘Going Green’. We’ve got film screenings, talks, demonstrations, stalls, bike rides, bike fixing, Co-op re-launch and much, much more. So check out the exciting line up and do come along, learn something new, and have a good time!

Monday 22nd March Meat-free Monday All day, campus wide According to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization, livestock production generates nearly a fifth of the world’s greenhouse gases — more than transportation. ‘A kilogram of beef is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution than driving for 3 hours while leaving all the lights on back home.’ Cutting down you meat and dairy consumption is one of the most effective carbon-saving actions an individual can take. Meat Free Monday is a campus wide publicity campaign to highlight the environmental impacts of meat, and encourage people to cut their carbon ‘foodprint’ and keep this Monday Meat-Free!

CAN Film Festival No entry fee, all you have to do is bring your cans as admission and collect money for charity Don’t Be CRUDE 12.00-14.00pm, Southlands Chapel Come join us for the showing of film CRUDE - a documentary raising awareness about the Chevron-made oil disaster in Ecuador, and learn about the reality of our oil! The event is also hoping to raise money to help fund getting the directly impacted community members to Chevron’s annual shareholder meeting in May. Bring a fairtrade cake to sell to raise money, or donate either on the day or directly to Amazon Watch.


AGE OF STUPID 18.00 – 19.30, Duchesne 004. Followed by optional workshop and discussion Getting together to watch this much acclaimed movie, followed by a workshop and discussion. The Age of Stupid is a 2008 film by Director Franny Armstrong (McLibel, Drowned Out). Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated future world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance? The production was notable for its innovative way crowd-funding financing model, as well as the Indie Screenings distribution system which allows anyone anywhere to screen the film. The film was released in 2009 and became one of the most talked-about films of the year. It also spawned the hugely-successful 10:10 campaign. Donations towards the license fee to screen this film would be greatly appreciated!

TUESDAY 23RD MARCH P&P take over the lawns/Southlands Bar Come join us on the lawns over the afternoon for some P&P style fun, food and flag making.Followed by a night of folk and alternative music down at Southlands Bar!


WEDNESDAY 24TH March Fair Green Fayre 11.00 – 17.00 Duchesne foyer, Belfry Bar and Monti Diner Series of information stalls about local and global environmental and ethical issues. Stands include: Love food hate waste:giving tips and freebies to help reduce your food waste Wandsworth Cycling campaign. Putney cycles: come and sign up for your free bike for critical mass People and Planet: an alternative information stand R U outdoors: including an allotment tour at 14.30 Human rights society, Fair trade, Nutrition society, Vegan society and Animal rights stands Information stall about recycling and University based green initiatives New internationalist with a 3 month free promotion on their magazine on global justice Canvas Volunteer stall Battersea and Wandsworth TUC Come and find out about the red/green alliance campaign being built on the Roehampton estate, where residents are being turned down for double glazing and spending loads on heating. The Roehampton Food Co-op is being re-launched. A brilliant opportunity to buy ethically sourced food cheaply on-campus! Come down and check out how it works, what’s for sale and suggest things you would like to see! The co-op cook-book competition launch – enter your recipe of co-op based ingredients, with the top 5 recipes getting an organic vegetable box, and 25 Love Food Hate Waste cookbooks up for grabs


Fair Clothes Fair 11.00 – 15.00 Belfry bar Come to the Belfry Bar to check out our range of ethical fashion. Alongside the fair-trade clothing will be a selection of local charity shops touting their wares. So come and fix yourself up for the Rubik’s cube bop and help us support Cancer research, Mind, The Octavia foundation, and ethical second hand shopping!

Love Food Hate Waste Cooking Demo 12.30 – 13.30 Monti Diner A chef from the Love Food Hate Waste campaign will be coming in to demonstrate waste-reducing cooking techniques, focusing particularly on dealing with sell by dates, substituting meat, and using co-op bought products. Lots of tasters available!

Talking Allowed 13.00 – 14.00 Duchesne 001 Question time style panel discussion and debate with 4 special guests, discussing various environmental issues voted for by you!

Environmental Philosophy talk 16.00 – 17.00 Duchesne 101 What is a Rhizome? Deleuze & Guattari, environmentalism and anti-capitalist globalization. This third session in our environmental philosophy series turns to the thought of French Marxists Deleuze and Guattari, and focuses upon their influence on the politics and methods of the anti-capitalist globalization movement as well as an environmental philosophy based upon heterogeneity rather than holism.


THURSDAY 25TH March Bike fix workshop 11.00 – 13.00, outside the Belfry Bar Bring your bike along to get your tyres pumped and biking niggles ironed before the big ride!

Critical Mass style bike ride 13.00 – 14.00, Starting and finishing outside the RSU. We’ll be doing a gentle group bike-ride around the campuses. There will be music and flags, so come on down and celebrate all things bike! Bring your bike in! Friday 26th March Environmental Auditor Training for Green Impact 9.00am – 12.30pm, Venue TBC Refreshments provided As part of the Green Impact scheme running in staff departments, environmental auditors are needed to survey the department and see how well they have done. We are looking for students (and staff) to train as auditors!
