8 WALKING WITH

DINOSAURS Dorset is home to the Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site. It’s blessed with an abundance of unique geology, breathtaking coastal paths and even a ghost village that time forgot. WORDS

STEVE O’ROURKE

C

ast your mind adrift and ponder on the natural wonders of the world; visions of sweeping Grand Canyon vistas or the ultraviolet subterranean splendour of the Great Barrier Reef may bubble quickly to the surface. But a modest 95-mile stretch of East Devon and Dorset coastline sits amongst the better-known names as the proud recipient of England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the same way that the Reef and Canyon teach us about our environment, so too does the Jurassic Coast. It offers a richly detailed geological walk through time, covering the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, spanning 185 million years and punctuated with significant fossil sites, that provide a glimpse into the history of life itself.  ROHAN.CO.UK | 5

The most rewarding way to explore this beautiful stretch of coastline is by putting your best foot forward. Hippocrates prescribed walking as “man’s best medicine,” and as the founding father of Western remedies, the acclaimed Greek physician and philosopher was certainly on the right path. Walking is one of life’s most simple pleasures, yet to so many it is relegated to a mere perfunctory process, bereft of pleasure and engagement. There’s something in the gentle rhythmic motion of putting one foot in front of the other that forges a natural bond with our surroundings – connecting us with the earth we are walking upon. To walk the Jurassic Coast is to take a stroll down Nature’s very own memory lane, where meandering coastal paths offer unique geology, an abundance of natural wildlife habitats and a scenic diversity in a class of its own. The eastern tip of the Jurassic journey begins with Old Harry Rocks at Handfast Point on the Isle of Purbeck. These striking chalk stacks date back 20,000 years and are a beautiful example of natural erosion. The chalk of Old Harry Rocks was once part of a long stretch between Purbeck and the Isle of Wight, but remained as a headland after large parts of this seam were eroded away.

6 | WELCOME TO THE COAST

‘To walk the Jurassic Coast is to take a stroll down Nature’s very own memory lane, where meandering coastal paths offer unique geology.’ Legend has it that the rocks were named after infamous Poole pirate Harry Paye, who is said to have buried much of his ill-gotten gains in the surrounding areas. As you walk around the open grassland, keep an eye out for seasonal wildflowers – and if you’re particularly lucky, a rare glimpse of the bottlenose dolphins that can sometimes be seen playing around Old Harry. In contrast to the epic coastal views that Old Harry serves up with aplomb, a trip to Tyneham village is like walking straight into a picture-perfect recreation of wartime village life. Except this isn’t a recreation – Tyneham is a ‘ghost’ village that was commandeered by the Ministry of Defence in December 1943 for military training, and has been deserted ever since. The church and school provide excellent exhibitions, and the village itself makes for a great

Lulworth Cove Lulworth Cove sits near the village of West Lulworth, on the Jurassic Coast – the World Heritage Site in Dorset.

8 | WELCOME TO THE COAST

‘The landscape along this stretch of Southern England is certainly rugged, but there’s a fragility to this coastline that requires vigilance and protection.’ ‘living museum’ that is testament to a time long since passed. It’s worth noting that this stretch of coast and the village itself lie within the Lulworth Army test range and are not open to the public all year-round. To check opening times please refer to www.dorsetforyou.com A mile-long track from Tyneham brings us to the edge of Worbarrow Bay and the start of the next coastal path that leads to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, the most famous names in the impressive Jurassic Coast lineup. The Cove is a picturesque horseshoe bay and one of the finest examples in the world. The unique shape is thanks to its narrow entrance, causing wave diffraction that has gradually eroded the coastline by the waves entering in an arced shape. Across the brow of the hill lies Durdle Door, a majestic limestone arch embedded deep into the Jurassic Coast. The formation has been likened to a sea serpent bending for a sip of water, and makes for a spectacular backdrop to a picnic on the gently sloping shingle beach. While in the Lulworth area, it’s well worth investigating the Fossil Forest where remains of tree stumps, dating back 135 million years, litter the landscape with their unusual ring-shaped rock formations. The trees became fossilised when they were gradually buried and coated in sediment, making for a unique addition to the Jurassic Coast. ROHAN.CO.UK | 9

FIND YOUR OWN PIECE OF HISTORY Stuart Godman is the Jurassic Coast’s very own Fossil Warden. He patrols the coastline, advising people on the best places to fossil hunt.

Fossil collecting do’s and don’ts 1. Do not climb on or dig in the cliffs. 2. Always check the tide times and go fossil hunting on a falling tide. 3. Look for fossils on the beach among the sand and shingle.
This is the best place to find them. 4. Avoid sitting directly under the cliffs. 5. Listen as well as look for movement in the cliffs.
 6. Avoid mudflows on the beaches, as you can get stuck very easily. 7. If you are using a hammer, make sure you are wearing eye protection. 8. Only use a hammer on the light grey pebbles. Leave the flint well alone. 9. Always ask the Fossil Warden or staff at the Heritage Centre for identification if you are not sure about what you
have found. 10. Do not throw pebbles and large rocks about the beach in an attempt to break them. You might hit someone!

10 | WELCOME TO THE COAST

Steps to the past (Above.) Stairs lead the way down to Man of War Bay next to Durdle Door.

Fossil fans also flock further west to Charmouth. This quiet seaside hamlet is widely regarded as the best place to go fossil hunting, thanks largely to rougher winter tides that uncover many Jurassic gems. There’s also a Heritage Centre where guided walks and fossil identification take place. The landscape along this stretch of Southern England is certainly rugged, but there’s a fragility to the coastline that requires vigilance and protection. Natural erosion, coupled with increased tourism and incidents of unscrupulous fossil collecting – that has even included the use of power tools, have taken their toll over the years. Alexandra O’Dwyer, a Trustee of the Jurassic Coast Trust, is tasked with ensuring the continued conservation of the World Heritage Site. “The Jurassic Coast deserves to be treasured; its extraordinary scientific

According to Alexandra, “The Trustees believe that unlocking the passion and interest of all the people who use and care about our World Heritage Site is the very best way of ensuring it is well looked after and safeguarded for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations.” “Our amazing rocks, landforms and fossils, which are as globally important as the Taj Mahal or Mount Everest, inspire people in many ways and have given mankind so much over thousands of years, so to look after them and learn from them seems the very least we can do!” For further information visit jurassiccoast.org ROHAN.CO.UK | 11

If you want to stay warm wear a fleece full of holes. The more air a fabric can trap, the more efficiently it insulates. Rohan’s Microgrid and Microrib fleece fabrics work harder than normal fleece, trapping more air and preventing the loss of your body’s warmth. A less dense fabric also means better packability, more efficient wicking, a faster drying time and excellent breathability. It’s superb as a classic mid-layer for British hillwalking or for sundown warmth in warmer climates. And its lack of bulk means that you can layer it up on the coldest days. The Microgrid and Microrib are consistently our best-selling fleeces in one form or another and we know customers often have four or five of them. Perhaps subtly improving the cut and offering some great new colours could be reason to buy just one more.

EVERYWEAR We have never fully understood why gear that works better than ordinary clothing needs to look overtly technical. The real benefits come when it doesn’t look too technical. Understated classic styling is the trick. This is what makes Rohan clothing so versatile, allowing you to fit in on the hills, in town or even at work.

And don’t let the simple everyday style trick you into thinking that Rohan clothing isn’t hard working. Everything we make is protective, fast drying, lightweight, packable and easycare. And because it is so versatile, it means that you can take less stuff and get more done. We like to call it Everywear.

Roamers. Roamers are probably the most comfortable walking trousers you will ever wear. And our customers seem to agree – year after year, they are our best-selling women’s trousers. They are soft, lightweight, wind resistant, highly breathable and stretch in every way that you do. Not all worker bees wear suits and not everyone likes to spend their evenings preparing for the 9 to 5. Roamers are not only a flattering fit with classic understated styling, they are also much harder working than most work trousers. They resist stains, need less washing, dry in a flash and require little or no ironing.

THE WORLD’S BEST MULTI-FUNCTION TROUSERS

When Bags were invented nearly forty years ago, they were revolutionary. An immediate hit, they went on to consistently outsell every other design of trousers we could make. We’ve now sold well over one million pairs and many people still call them their ‘Rohans’. If we changed them there might just be another revolution.

A WHISPER IS LOUDER THAN A SHOUT. Sooner or later people are convinced by Rohan’s understated looks, technical benefits and longevity. And because Rohan deliberately avoid over-promising and ostentatious branding, this is often a gradual process. The interesting thing is that the quiet revolution just keeps gathering pace. Classic looking clothes with hidden performance are getting more popular than ever.

The Headland Vest is the ultimate in versatility, and if you haven’t been converted to a fleece vest yet for hillwalking, you need to give it a try. You’re known as a marathon walker. What does that mean? When I’m on a walk I aim to travel more than a marathon-distance of 26.2 miles each day, but unlike marathon runners I also have a rucksack on my back. When did you first get the walking bug? I was a six-year old school boy and the whole class went on a day trip to Rivelin Valley. The fresh air and freedom made a very deep impression. What is it about walking that most appeals? Being able to see everything at its own pace. Even if you cycle, you’re not making the same connection with your surroundings because you’re going too fast.

BEST FOOT FORWARD John Merrill has walked in excess of 200,000 miles – more than ten times around the world, wearing out 118 pairs of boots, 38 rucksacks and more than 1,000 pairs of socks in a career that’s lasted more than 40 years. As he approaches his 71st birthday he shows no signs of slowing down. Steve O’Rourke tries to keep pace with the UK’s leading marathon walker. PHOTOGRAPHY D JAMES MARTIN 30 | WELCOME TO THE COAST

Most memorable walk? My coast-to-coast trip across the US, from Cape Henry in Virginia, to New Brighton State Beach, south of San Francisco. The diversity of the terrain was incredible. I went up over the Appalachian Mountains then down into the Deep South where there wasn’t a day under 90-degrees. I walked rim to rim of the Grand Canyon then through Death Valley, across the High Sierras and through Yosemite. It took 178 days, averaging 28.4 miles per day. How do you finance these adventures? I’m completely self-sponsored,

was meant to do and walking has certainly brought me closer to spirituality. Always walk with an open mind, expect nothing and miracles will appear.

based on the revenue generated from books and lectures. I’ve self-published 412 guide books, selling over four million copies. What was your most difficult walk? My 3,000-mile walk across Europe that included the Swiss Alps. I was slowing down a bit due to the altitude, but it’s supposed to take 56 days to cross The Pyrenees and I did it in 26. You’re known as a fast walker, how do you do it? I just keep a steady pace of approximately three miles per hour, but I keep it up all day. Do you have any unusual walking practices? I don’t drink or carry water during the walk. I don’t recommend it, but it’s the way I’ve always been. I find it no hardship to go without water for 12 hours. What’s been your longest walk? The British Isles was 7,000 miles including all estuaries. Have you sustained many injuries while walking? I snapped a metatarsal in my right foot two days before an expedition to the Himalayas. It was a six-week Everest trek and I returned to the UK for four days afterwards, prior to a US walk, and had it checked out – and it had healed naturally! I then flew down to the Mexican border and walked to Canada.

Is there any special item that you wouldn’t leave for a walk without? My camera is essential.

‘I’d tell keen walkers to start on shorter walks. But it’s the mental side as well. It takes a long time to shake off the shackles of modern life and return to nature.’ What advice would you give to keen walkers? Start on shorter walks. The coastal path around the Isle of Wight only takes a few days. But it’s the mental side as well. It takes a long time to shake off the shackles of modern life and return to nature. In the US I’ve been walking up to 14 days without seeing another person. Do you find walking a spiritual pursuit? Very much so. Walking has shaped my faith and allowed me the time to reflect. Four years ago I was ordained as an interfaith minister. I believe that this was what I

Where do you recommend in the UK for walking? I’ve walked the Cleveland Way 14 times, there’s a beautiful contrast between the moorland and the coast. I also love the stretch of the Jurassic Coast between Swanage and Lulworth Cove. Where is there left to walk? It’s never ending! I’m walking from Florence to Rome in August. I’ve got a 2,000mile walk in Australia and a 2,100–mile walk in New Zealand. I’ve discovered an 88 Buddhist temple walk in Japan and there’s a similar trail in Thailand. As you’ve gotten older, have you had to make any compromises with your walking? No, not at the moment. I’m 70 now so I do try and make my rucksack as light as possible, but most overnight stops are still camping. Do you ever get lost? Not really. If I stray off the route a bell in my head tells me that I’m not on the right track. I’ve never had a satnav, just a little compass that I rarely use. ROHAN.CO.UK | 31

as long as there have been taxes, there have been people trying to dodge them. Yet early in the 18th century, with foreign wars draining the treasury, the British government decided upon a policy that would steep the nation in such criminality that it would take well over a century to purge. The policy: high taxes on exotic imports; the result: a field day for smugglers. From 1700 to around 1830, Britain’s beaches were positively crawling with gangs landing fancy goods in the dead of night – and revenue men trying to catch them. Just about the entire south and east coasts were put to use, but Dorset, with its hidden coves and desolate beaches from Lyme Regis to Bournemouth, was a hot spot. All sorts came ashore: silk, tea, brandy, tobacco, even

playing cards. To give an idea of scale, it was reported that around 120,000 gallons of brandy a year came ashore through Bournemouth and Purbeck – only two sites out of dozens. Convoys of loaded wagons would trundle inland and disappear into the New Forest or the wilds of Cranborne Chase to disgorge goods bound for Bristol, London, even as far north as the Midlands. This line of work took courage, brawn, charisma and quick thinking, a combination that winnowed out most but turned those who possessed the right stuff into wealthy men. The most famous was ‘gentle’ (because he never killed anyone) Isaac Gulliver, who was too slippery to be caught. On one occasion the customs men called to his house to haul him to jail, but wily Gulliver chalked his face ROHAN.CO.UK | 39

Tobacco was pulled into strands and twisted like cord, then coiled and stored with the ship’s ropes There’s more than a touch of slapstick to the running battles between officials and smugglers. There are stories of church roofs collapsing during the service under the weight of brandy stashed upstairs, and masked smugglers gleefully mooning thwarted excise men as their boat outstripped the revenue’s. Late one night, dragoons went to arrest the landlord of the Ship Inn at Wool – a nasty piece of work who ran a violent gang. An officer tapped on the barred door and when the landlord bellowed ‘Who’s there?’ the officer replied in a squeaky voice, ‘It’s only me, Mr Lucas, Mrs Smith’s little girl. I want a little drop of brandy for Mother, for she is bad in her bowels.’ Lucas opened the door and was swiftly arrested – though history relates that the jury, afraid of reprisals, found him not guilty. For all the comedy pratfalls of smugglers and revenue, the story of the dodgy landlord hints at the violence that was endemic in

that world. The penalty for smuggling was hanging or transporting; suspected informers were horribly beaten; people drowned when landings went wrong; customs men shot smugglers and smugglers ran down customs boats. Matters got badly out of hand when two officers were thrown to their death off a cliff near Weymouth. The widespread lawlessness was only brought under control after the Napoleonic Wars when the treasury, alarmed by the return of thousands of demobbed soldiers, recruited them to the coast patrols. This undoubtedly put a serious dent in the business but largescale smuggling was really only finished in 1830 – and it went with a whimper not a bang. It was swept away not by force of arms but by tax reform: a change in policy that simply vaporised the customer base almost overnight. The glamorous folk heroes were done for; it was the money-men who won in the end. ROHAN.CO.UK | 41

LOOKS LIKE A WOOLLEN JUMPER, WORKS LIKE A TECHNICAL FLEECE. Hiding technology in clothing is at the very heart of Rohan. That’s because the less overtly technical your clothing looks, the more versatile it becomes. If a mid-weight fleece can work as a warmth layer on the hills and still have everyday good looks, it becomes twice as useful; a hard working fleece is now also a great casual jumper. Science made soft and friendly.

Our Jeans Plus and Stria Top are also perfect examples of technology disguised as clothing. Essentials re-invented with clever Rohan thinking. Like everything at Rohan they are easycare, lightweight, highly packable and fast drying. These principles were originally applied to create great travel clothing – they also help to make everyday life more comfortable too.

Women’s Pathway Cardi Looks like knitwear, works like fleece.

Women’s Stria Top Long Sleeve Everyday good looks, mountain performance.

Women’s Jeans Plus (Straight Leg) The cooler, lighter alternative to regular cotton jeans.
