EDITORIAL

Gift Your Gear & Under One Sky. Coming together to support the homeless. Last month we introduced you to Under One Sky, a volunteer-led organisation that supports the homeless. We are working with Under One Sky to protect those living on the streets from the elements through the Gift Your Gear initiative, using the donated kit. Under One Sky was founded by Mikkel Juel Iversen in 2012. By winter 2019, he ran a collective of 600 volunteers and had ambitions to grow the organisation across Europe. Then the unthinkable happened, the pandemic hit, having a devastating effect on the homeless community. With no idea when the lifelines the homeless community had once relied upon would re-open, Mikkel turned his focus closer to home, going out every day to talk to the homeless. Although plans to expand had taken a back seat, Under One Sky more than doubled in size during the lockdowns, existing now as a group of over 1,400 volunteers with whom Rohan are incredibly proud to be working alongside. The key to the organisation is building meaningful relationships with those living on the streets, taking the time to speak to everyone they meet as they hand out supplies and create shopping lists of special requests. 4

As Mikkel explains, “giving people who have nothing something precious, something of quality, is such an easy way to make them feel dignified.”

The Perfect Storm. As a British outdoor Brand, we know British weather all too well and design our kit and clothing around its unpredictable nature. We ensure each piece is ready to tackle whatever the weather brings so that you can adventure on in comfort. As that’s typically wind & rain, a key feature of outdoor clothing is great waterproofing. Each of our waterproofs must meet our Barricade Standard, meaning they’ll stop a 20,000mm column of water entering whilst allowing 20,000g/m2/24hr of water vapour to leave. Our base 20,000mm rating is over ten times the British standard for waterproofing meaning you’ll stay dry all day. Three key areas determine the Barricade Standard; Membrane Water Resistance, Membrane Breathability and, lastly, Garment Construction. To achieve this standard, all our waterproofs use Hydrophilic Monolithic membranes, more commonly recognised as PU (polyurethane) membranes and are fully seam sealed. For further protection, our waterproofs are treated with a Durable Water Repellency finish, which forces water droplets to run off the outside of the fabric, helping to maintain its breathability in challenging conditions when you need it most – it’s ideal for those British downpours. We apply our class-leading Barricade Standard to four distinct construction methods to offer the perfect waterproof for every use and is defined in the guide below: 2-Layer Construction The 2-Layer construction by definition means that the waterproof fabric of the garment has two layers. With our 2-Layer construction method, the water-repellent outer fabric and the PU hydrophilic 8

membrane are bonded together. In addition, a loose lining protects the membrane from the inside. The material of loose lining depends on the type of garment and could range from a mesh to a fleece liner for your comfort when wearing the item. 2-Layer construction is particularly versatile and can be found throughout our range of waterproofs. 2.5-Layer Construction Our 2.5-Layer construction method has the water-repellent outer fabric and the PU hydrophilic membrane are bonded together and then protected by a print. This added .5 of a layer helps to keep you comfortable and the membrane protected. Jackets with 2.5-Layer construction are our lightest, fully waterproof garments and are the perfect choice for your pack or short walks where you need to stay dry. 3-Layer Construction Our 3-Layer construction method has the water-repellent outer fabric, the PU hydrophilic membrane and a protective liner bonded together to form a single element. As a result, these jackets are super-lightweight whilst maintaining great durability. They’re perfect for layering up, when you’re on the move, or when you’re carrying a pack. Drop Liner Construction The Drop Liner construction means that the garment has a non-waterproof outer fabric with a waterproof inner fabric that is stitched to the garment. Garments designed with our Drop Liner allow us to use a wider range of face fabrics so your waterproof walking trousers can look just like your regular ones and your waterproof jacket can protect you all day without looking like you’ve just stepped off the hill.

The Base Layer

The Mid-Layer

Our 5-Layer system works to wick sweat away from the body, trap dry body heat, and create a barrier against the harsh elements. When the temperature drops, start insulating your body with a mid-layer. This traps air and reduces heat loss, while continuing the process of wicking away moisture. Boost your body warmth considerably with an insulation layer that’s thermally efficient, trapping dry air and dramatically reducing heat loss. Using either synthetic wadding, like our Insuloft, or natural down, an insulation layer provides a surprising amount of warmth for its size. Super compressible, it won’t take up much room in your pack and fills you with the confidence to carry on in chillier temperatures.

Compare. Choose. Conquer. Ergonomics is the science of how the body moves. At Rohan, we work to achieve the best possible freedom of movement when wearing our garments through stretch fabrics. We weave stretch into the fabric construction, allowing for freedom of movement but creating comfort too. There are two different types of stretch that we incorporate into our garments Two-Way and Four-Way Stretch. Two-Way Stretch refers to stretch across either the width or the length of the fabric. It cannot be both. We determine the best approach on the direction of the stretch based on the intended usage for the garment. For example, if the fabric is used in an active trouser, we would apply stretch down the leg length. For example, this would allow for more freedom of movement when walking or climbing a stile. On the other hand, we may apply the stretch across the leg for our more casual trousers, providing comfort when seated or travelling. Four-Way Stretch is used primarily on styles intended for high activity. This is where the wearer will need the flexibility that allows them to move unhindered in several directions using vertical and horizontal stretch, e.g., scrambling over a rock. We select different materials for different areas of the body, producing a final garment that achieves all the freedom of movement required, which has added durability or functionality where needed.

EDITORIAL

Walking with the Exmoor Society. Discovering local treasure Hope Bourne. The Exmoor Society, established in 1958, is an independent charity that protects and promotes Exmoor for the benefit of all. The Society acts as a champion and watchdog for conservation and the enjoyment of natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage, values very much shared by Rohan.

The Exmoor Society shares with us one of their favourite artist and author, Hope Bourne, and how Exmoor inspired her works. Hope Bourne is remembered for two reasons, her creative talents as an author and artist and her tough, self-sufficient lifestyle. If you want to understand the true character of Exmoor, you need only pick up one of Hope’s books where you are treated to an authentic account of someone who lived very much in touch with the moor. Regarded as a critical Exmoor artist and author, the Exmoor Society dedicated a guided walk in her memory to allow people to learn more about her life. Our guide for the day is Lisa Eden, who provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of this extraordinary character. The walk begins in the centre of Withypool, next to the River Barle. Withypool was the closest village for Hope during most of her time living on Exmoor. Each day she would make the eight-mile round trip to meet locals

and fetch supplies. From the river, we follow a footpath which leads us up through the village onto some neighbouring farmland, where we can take in the beautiful views of Withypool and the nearby moorland of Withypool Hill. It is here where Lisa begins her introduction of Hope. Hope Bourne moved to Exmoor in the 1950s after her mother’s death, left with no money and no home. A fiercely independent and toughnatured woman, Hope began a self-sufficient lifestyle by living off the land and earning a small income through tending farm stock. In the 1970’s she moved to Fernyball, a small piece of land with an old caravan where she lived for 24 years with no electrics, no mains water, no sewage, and no telephone. Hope lived by a frugal budget of less than £1 per week to see her through the year, over and above what nature could provide. Alongside farm work, Hope taught herself to write and

paint and authored six books. She would walk 20 miles every day with her sketchpad capturing the landscape and the wildlife of Exmoor. As our walking party emerges from the farmland onto Kitridge Lane, it is easy to see how Hope found her inspiration. Leaving Kitridge Lane, we re-enter the village where Lisa points out buildings that Hope was particularly fond of, including Oliver’s Cottage and the village church. From the cottage, we follow a footpath that offers walkers the opportunity to circumnavigate Withypool Hill. The views from the pathway are spectacular and highlight the diversity of the beautiful Exmoor landscape. As we complete this final leg, attendees of the guided walk agree, they will be reacquainting themselves with the works of Hope Bourne. It’s here where you will encounter Exmoor in a way you never have before.

Harrow Carers. The Gift of the outdoors. At Rohan, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. So through our Gift Your Gear initiative, we collect donations generously donated by your customers of useable outdoor kit and distribute these to meaningful causes across the UK, like Harrow Carers. Colin Powell, Operations Director at Harrow Carers, wants to bring the “real happiness” he’s experienced in the outdoors to the unpaid carers he works alongside. Colin talked to me about the support Harrow Carers provides for unpaid carers and how donations from Rohan’s Gift Your Gear initiative will support his vision. Since 1997 Harrow Carers has worked to assist and alleviate the challenges young aged 5 yrs -17 yrs and unpaid adult carers face. Their work takes many forms, from employment support and mindfulness workshops to counselling run by certified members of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). Most recently, Harrow Carers have taken over the lease of a 3.5acre field, ready to host various outdoor activities that will encourage participants to take time outside for themselves. Colin hopes that the nearby area will give the carers the security to relax and enjoy themselves, safe in the knowledge that home isn’t far away. Harrow Carers tailor their activities to be what their carers need, like the girls-only camping weekend that Colin organised at the beginning of September, specially requested by a group of young carers. The group is provided a budget and the freedom to plan

their activities. Having had such a great time, they’ve already requested more outdoor adventures. One thing Colin wishes everyone knew about being an unpaid carer is the psychological difficulties they face. As the carers don’t earn a wage from the sometimes full-time care they provide and regularly put aside their own needs to prioritise the welfare of those they care for, the free well-being support offered by Harrow Carers is critical. Donations of useable outdoor kit from Rohan’s Gift Your Gear initiative ensures, just like the services run by Harrow Carers, the outdoors is accessible to as many unpaid carers as possible.
