hello to hygge Pronounced ‘hoo-gaa’, it’s the Danish concept of coming together and enjoying the good things in life. Here Norman Miller gives us his guide to exploring Denmark the soul warming way.
4 | finding warmth in winter
PLENTY OF COUNTRIES AND LANGUAGES HAVE A WORD FOR THE SENSE OF WELL-BEING that comes from warmth and shelter, good cheer and a sense of community shared among friends. The Germans call it Gemütlichkeit, the Italians say comodità, the Dutch enjoy gezelligheid, while the Brits have a go with the concept of
cosiness – though that derives not from English but Scots Gaelic còsagach. But it’s Denmark that has grabbed the spotlight by dubbing the idea of feeling snug, sheltered and communal as hygge. Danes, of course, may point out that their sense of well-being involves maturely paying high taxes for excellent
social services plus genuinely promoting equality. Shops and lifestyle gurus, meanwhile, prefer to cast hygge in terms of sprawling among friends in softly lit spaces (think candles and crackling fires), while enjoying good food and drink – with plenty of warm layers to hand for venturing out in the chilly winter air. But you can also treat body and soul to a hearty helping of hygge by simply heading to Denmark to explore a natural splendour that complements its cool city attractions. And three national parks provide hikers and wildlife fans with perfect destinations featuring well marked trails and excellent facilities – from expert local guides to plentiful bird hides. Thy National Park in north-west Jutland is Denmark’s oldest – a dramatic landscape shaped by the sea, mixing vast windswept dunes and sandy grassland. Thy is also one of several Danish birdwatching meccas, with species on view including golden plover and sandpiper – and if you come in early spring you may even see dancing cranes. There’s rich cultural and historical life too, contrasting northern Europe’s largest WW2 bunker network with little fishing villages like north Vorupør, where locals still drag their boats ashore after a day at sea. The town also boasts the North Sea Oceanarium, a fine showcase for the rich sea life of the North Sea. Klitmøller, meanwhile, is one of Europe’s best windsurfing spots.

‘Treat yourself to a hearty helping of hygge by heading to Denmark to explore a natural splendour that complements its cool city attractions.’
Park Life (from top) coastline near Agger, north Jutland, in Thy National Park; old fishing hut in Ringkøbing Fjord, Jutland, Denmark.
Mols Bjerge National Park in east Jutland, meanwhile, offers some of Denmark’s most rugged and varied terrains – high heathlands, forests and pastures, plus a shoreline dotted with deserted sandy beaches. The Stubbe and Lange lakes in the north of the park are famous for their otter populations, while the Kaløs marshes and forests provide further distinctive 6 | finding warmth in winter
ecosystems and wildlife. Mols Bjerge also offers historic riches – Bronze Age mounds, medieval towns, old manors and ruins such as the Middle Ages castle at Kalø.
BLOCK OUT THE SUN Denmark’s largest – and newest – national park is in southern Jutland. Now garlanded with UNESCO World Heritage Site status, the Wadden Sea National Park reaches along Denmark’s southwest coast down to the German border, and comprises the world’s largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats.
It’s another birdwatchers’ paradise. Situated on the main routes of many migratory birds, the wetlands are particularly dazzling in spring and autumn, when birdwatchers gather at places like Ringkøbing Fjord, Skjern Meadows, West Stadil Fjord, Nissum Fjord and Harboøre Tange. Spring and autumn are the time to see one of the world’s great avian wonders, when flocks of starlings up to half a million strong take to the skies at dusk to perform vast aerial dances – known as murmurations. Because they blot out swatches of the sky as the birds swoop and dart, they have been given the Danish name Sort Sol (Black Sun). The best times to see it are mid-March to mid-April, then mid-September to midOctober, particularly around the marshes near the ancient towns of Tønder and Ribe. Murmurations seem to play several roles. Firstly, they allow the birds to share warmth and exchange information on the best feeding spots they have found – a sort of avian hygge, in fact. Predators such as peregrine falcons, meanwhile, find it hard to target one bird amid a spellbinding swirl of thousands. And if a bold hunter does swoop into the flock, the starlings

bombard them with droppings and vomit.
LIVING HISTORY As a once much fought over borderland, south Jutland is also rich in history and unique culture, having changed hands several times between Denmark and Germany. Hiking and birdwatching can be complemented with a visit to famous Danish battlefields and Denmark’s most atmospheric towns. The most famous is Ribe – the country’s oldest town, a thriving trading spot back in the 8th century, 400 years
Southern Jutland (clockwise from top) half a million starlings take flight in what's known as the Black Sun over Tønder marsh in Wadden Sea National Park; one of Ribe's famous night watchmen; and the town's historic cathedral.
before Copenhagen was being thought about. As well as the superb Viking Museum and the town’s grand cathedral, Ribe is also home to some notable birdlife – most famously, the European white stork which has a penchant for building its giant nests on top of the local chimneys.
Ribe also offers the charming spectacle of Night Watchmen. Every evening from the start of May until mid-September, you can take a leisurely stroll alongside these timeless figures through the old town, enjoying old stories, verses and songs as the long Nordic daylight hours turn to twilight. In the old days, the Night Watchmen ensured the streets were safe and alerted good townsfolk that it might be time to think of bed. Today, it’s just a great way to set yourself up to go find a cosy place to practice some hygge.

WOMEN’S/WINTER WALKING
The extra length of the Hilltop Jacket means it covers your thighs and it has to be nearly torrential before it’s worth putting waterproof overtrousers on. It was designed for complete protection in the mountains but is also ideal as a hardworking city mac. Unlike so many macs, it has a proper hood and will really do the job in winter. The Icepack Jacket and Icepack Vest rely on our remarkable InsuloftTM wadding. It has a class leading warmth-to-weight ratio together with durability and great resilience to water. And if you haven’t discovered Dry Roamers yet, you should perhaps give them a try, they are a revelation. They look and feel like great-fitting active trousers and the hidden bonus is that they have a superlight BarricadeTM lining that keeps out the wind and rain without the rustle and rigmarole of waterproof overtrousers.

Perfect as a lightweight technical jumper for active pursuits and equally good as an extra warmth layer for colder or less active moments. The Microgrid has always been a favourite with our customers, as well as our designers and staff for work and play. The needle-out construction creates a beautifully soft waffle-like fabric and also delivers sound technical benefits. It increases the warmth and packability whilst reducing the weight and drying time.
And because it’s been such a success over so many years, we have had the chance to incrementally improve it year after year. What we have now is a great range of colours and a choice of designs, from the classic zip, to jackets and a gilet. This means whatever your personal preference there will be a Microgrid fleece that’s perfect for you. Light, packable, good looking, fast drying, soft and warm – we like to think of it as Rohan distilled into one clever understated top.

WOMEN’S/MICROGRIDS
If you want to stay warm, wear a fleece full of holes. The more air a fabric can trap, the more efficiently it insulates. Our Microgrid and Microrib fleece fabrics work harder than a normal fleece because they trap more air, preventing the loss of heat from your body. A less dense fabric also means better packability, better wicking, less weight
and faster drying. This fabric is the secret behind our best-selling fleeces. With a class-leading warmth-to-weight ratio, Microrib jackets and tops are the perfect pullover for active pursuits and equally good as mid-layer warmth for colder or less energetic moments. There’s also

Friend&foe When the Vikings invaded it must have seemed like the end of the Anglo-Saxon world, but together they made a new Britain, one that echoes to this day. WORDS BY VANESSA HARRISS
THE VIKINGS HAVE HAD A BAD PRESS. They swarmed in on longships, raped, pillaged, desecrated monasteries, then retreated (briefly) to count their loot. At least, that’s what the chroniclers say. However, Norse bloodlust wasn’t much worse than the natives’, and the ideas they brought are still with us. Lindisfarne, off Northumbria, was the first English territory
18 | finding warmth in winter
to be hit in 793 AD. Raids were sporadic, but in 865 AD they began in earnest. However, the Vikings (the word means pirate) met their match in Alfred the Great, who forced them back to an area that became known as the Danelaw. Throughout the north and east you can still see names like -thwaite (woodland clearing), -thorpe (outlying farmstead), -kirk (church), -ness (headland), -by (farm),
coined by the marauders as they turned back into farmers, settling into a landscape very like the one back home. Wetherby means sheep farm; Haverigg means ridge where oats are grown; Clitheroe is the hill of the song thrush; Skirbeck recalls its clear stream. Sometimes we even have the story behind the name: Tolpuddle in Dorset comes from ‘Tola’s farm on the River

Piddle’. Tola was the widow of Orc, who was given the property for serving Canute, one of the last Viking kings of England. We think of the Vikings as men, but women followed quickly. Plentiful finds of Scandinavian-style women’s brooches show that women flocked over, proud of their heritage yet keen to build a home, suggesting that fighting stopped quickly. The language gives more clues. Norse and Anglo-Saxon words have similar roots, but the modern meanings of certain words came from the Vikings, and they tell of peace. Freckle, happy, fellow, muck, scrape and skill reflect people getting on with life. Give, take and get, suggest trade; sister and husband sound like people building a stable family life. Contrast this with the aftermath of the Norman conquest 200 years later, when language was used as a weapon of war. French and Latin were for the top dogs; everyone else carried on speaking their Anglo-Norse patois. Still, the language of the peasants bubbled away, and when English reasserted itself, many Norse words were still in use. This is largely a fluke of geography. The border of the Danelaw stretched from London to Bedford then followed the old Roman road of Watling Street. It’s a huge chunk through which many pilgrims and traders would pass. It was in the middle of the country, which meant the language was intelligible to most people. Also, a lot of east Midlanders moved
to London – not a difficult journey – and they did well, influencing the language of authority. Scandinavian-style governance is still with us. The Norsemen devised the Althing, a national assembly peopled by freemen that could make laws and punish criminals. The Isle of Man’s parliament is still called the Tynwald, from the Viking word Thingvollr, which means ‘assembly fields’, where the Thing (council) would meet. The word ‘odd’ comes from Old Norse, too – it meant the third number, or casting vote. It’s not just our parliament; our Christmas rituals also carry a distinctly Nordic whiff. The tree that we decorate is a
Danish Invasion (clockwise from top) Lindisfarne, the first English territory to be hit by Vikings in 793; one of England’s last Viking kings, Canute; and a Viking brooch.
descendant of the Yggdrasil, the holy ash tree of Norse mythology. Our Christmas wreath comes from the same tradition, and we sing ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ in church, little realising its Norse echoes. In fact, those savage barbarians aren’t nearly as far away, nor as savage as we think. Our language, our celebrations, our system of authority are all shaped by those Scandinavian adventurers – and perhaps sometimes, secretly, we too long to set sail for the horizon.

MEN’S/WATERPROOF TROUSERS
Rethink waterproof trousers Waterproof trousers without the downsides
1.
Waterproof overtrousers are potentially the most annoying piece of outdoor gear in existence. First you spend ages wondering if it’s actually raining enough to justify putting them on. And by the time you’re sure, your walking trousers are already wet and you find yourself hip hopping around on the edge of a cold hillside trying to thread big muddy boots into trouser legs that are being whipped around your waist by high winds. We do offer classic Elite Overtrousers but the full-length zips make on-and-off manoeuvres relatively simple and they’re superlight and packable so you can keep them at the bottom of your bag. And there is now also a real alternative; winterproof trousers that are not only warmer than normal walking trousers, but also fully waterproof without any of the drawbacks of waterproof overtrousers.
Men’s Dry Requisite Trousers and Dry Pioneer Trousers are based on proven Rohan trousers, but are supercharged by a ultra-light waterproof lining that transforms them into something unique. They look and feel like great Rohan walking trousers yet have the added benefit of keeping your legs dry on even the wettest days. And when your legs are warm and dry there is no need to layer up as heavily on the top. That means dry, warm and comfortable without any palaver.

EFFORTLESS STYLE Rohan thinking in one jacket
Simple, practical and supremely comfortable, this softshell jacket occupies a niche all of its own – if you’re familiar with our Troggings trousers, this jacket will need no introduction. Breathable yet water repellent, warm yet light, our new Troggings Jacket (available for men and women) is a three-season outer garment which doubles up very nicely as an insulating layer under a winter waterproof.
Featuring zip pockets for security and made from fleece-backed thermal fabric, this jacket is perfect for walking, cycling, work and travel. Comfortable enough for a transatlantic flight and smart enough for a restaurant in the Big Apple, it bridges the gap between high performance and effortless style. The secret’s in the fabric, a technical fibre combined with elastane makes this jacket far more comfortable than it has a right to be. Be warned, this is seriously addictive apparel.

the lure of Liguria For those seeking adventure in sunnier climes this winter, try a group hike in Cinque Terre National Park – one of Italy’s most beautiful coastal routes. WORDS BY NORMAN MILLER
Credits: Left: Marco Saracco / Alamy Stock Photo
W
hile Italy doesn’t practice hygge quite like the trend-setting Danes, it certainly gets the idea. The Italian language even has its own words sparked by the creation of a warm and friendly atmosphere to enjoy good food, drink and a sense of companionship: comodità, tranquillità, cordialità, confortevolezza. Italy simply replaces Danish manifestations of hygge with its own. Think ocean sunsets rather than soft candlelight, freshly grilled fish rather than succulent roast pork, fine wine rather than fine beer, beautiful pastries rather than cinnamon buns. The love of great coffee is, however, shared by Italians and Danes alike. Group winter hiking in Liguria is a great way to experience hygge Italian-style. Here in Italy’s north-west the Alps plunge into the ocean along one of Europe’s most gorgeous coastlines, an Italian Riviera whose most beguiling section reaches east
from the vibrant ancient city port of Genoa to embrace the breathtaking Cinque Terre National Park. The area takes its name from a quintet of ravishing harbour villages – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – handily linked by frequent trains that speed along coast tracks by crashing waves. Quiet medieval hilltop villages perch higher up the slopes. And a skein of walking trails makes the Cinque Terre one of Europe’s most spectacular hiking spots. While there are routes that hug the coast, swooping in and out of forest-cloaked bays, most hikers head for higher trails accessed by steep paths or steps rising like stairways to heaven from amid multicoloured coastal houses to snake across lush hills dotted with olive groves and vineyards. The Cinque Terre trails offer myriad ambiences. Some days, I enjoy hours striding through hushed pine and

chestnut woodland, savouring the calming sense of secluded tranquillity. One of the best walks links the pleasant town of Santa Margherita Ligure and the rich folk hangout of Portofino, where I enjoy my packed lunch by a mountain stream that tumbles in a silver thread down steeply terraced slopes. On other trails, pulses 26 | finding warmth in winter
quicken at vistas as thrilling as anywhere in the world. Heading from Manarola up to the medieval hilltop church at Verlassa, the hypnotic iron song of its midday bells fades as I traverse a two-foot wide path cut into the hill, my breathless wonder caused as much by the 800-foot plunge on my left as the panoramic view along the Cinque Terre coast, its villages like gaudy liquorice allsorts jammed into coastal clefts far below. Another day, I climb from Riomaggiore to the hilltop monastery of the Madonna di Montenero, weaving through
olive groves and vineyards planted with Albarolo, Bosco and Vermentino grapes, culminating in a view from 1000 feet up as delicious as the local Cinque Terre wine they make. Winter hiking has a special magic here. Trails that can sometimes be frustratingly thronged the rest of the year – such as the rocky path between Monterosso and Vernazza – suddenly open up to let you and your walking companions stride out with a sense of real liberation, pausing to admire views rather than waiting patiently to squeeze through

‘Trails that can sometimes be frustratingly thronged the rest of the year suddenly open up to let you stride out with a sense of liberation.’ a pinch point. Crowds also melt from the cobbled lanes around the idyllic coastal harbours, while restaurants and bars become communal havens to ease away any hiking aches with friends over freshly caught fish or hill game – served, of course, with a side order of inimitable Italian confortevolezza. And the weather remains pretty cosy too, with winter temperatures only rarely dipping into single figures, plus an average of 2324 dry days a month. This stretch of Liguria’s coast also offers fantastic options for days when you need a break from hiking. I discovered off the beaten track Ligurian charmers like the coastal town of Camogli. I head first for the maritime museum tucked away down steps near the train station, where I find an Aladdin’s Cave showcasing 300 years of evocative Ligurian seafaring history. Wandering along an almost deserted seafront, I snap pastel hued tenements, a little castle on a promontory and the faded Lido, plus a boat-filled harbour reflecting a town where fishing trumps tourism. Our group bases itself at Levanto, just outside the Cinque Terre National Park.
This charming low-key seaside resort laced with boutique-lined old streets is a laidback place to relax after a day’s hiking. We took an early evening passeggiata along a promenade winding around a bay between a wide sandy surfer’s beach and ornate mansions, then enjoyed lipsmacking Ligurian cuisine and local wine in cosy restaurants. After one day’s gorgeous hiking through sun-dappled pine forest, we arrive tired but happy at Portovenere and give our tired legs a treat by hitching a ride on the late afternoon fast ferry service to Levanto.
Sheer sights (above) view of the coastline along Riomaggiore and the Cinque Terre National Park.
Speeding out past a castletopped headland, I sit astern and watch the Italian flag snapping in the breeze as we surge along a shoreline of pale cliffs and steep hills topped with lonely churches. We dart in at each Cinque Terre harbour, even more beautiful from the sea. Landing at Levanto, a low sun sets the coloured facades of the seafront villas glowing with a soft light the same colour as Danish candlelight – and just as lovely.

The science of simple
If a design detail isn’t improving a piece of clothing, it is making it worse. Take it off, pare it down and declutter.
Simple designs are more versatile because they aren’t locked into one type of place or activity; they fit in rather than stand out. So in a world where so many companies seem to be competing to cram more on, we constantly take away. We prefer to rely on proven

designs, excellent fit, clever fabric and considered details. Take the Stria Top, Amblers and Spark Vest – one very simple looking outfit that is equally at home exploring in Namibia in November as it is taking a spring city break in Prague or a round of golf on a mild autumnal evening. MEN’S/ANYWEAR
Anywear Rohan clothing is liberating. It is lighter, more breathable, highly packable, better looking and easier to care for. It will keep you comfortable and safe in the rain, wind, heat or snow. Breathable yet water repellent, warm yet light, our new Troggings Jacket (available for men and women) is a three-season outer garment that is perfect for walking, cycling, work and travel. The Atlas Jacket combines waterproof protection with understated style. It’s cut long enough to
give good protection in the wilds and will also keep your suit jacket dry on the daily commute. Performance without a fussy design. Offering a mix of comfort, protection and looks, the Fenland Shirt is easycare, quick drying and feels supremely comfortable from the moment you put it on. And at under £50 for
a Rohan shirt, we think it’s a bit of a snip. Fusions are technology disguised as a great pair of trousers. Don’t let the good looks fool you though. A tough, light polyamide means these are happy hiking in the High Atlas but won’t blow your chance of an upgrade on the flight to Marrakech.

The Atlas Jacket offers waterproof protection in a relaxed understated style. And it’s equally at home on the hill or in the city. 2-layer BarricadeTM fabric is 100% waterproof and phenomenally breathable – even in challenging, humid conditions. It’s a classically styled, versatile jacket that gives protection without any fuss. Our Worldview Shirt is a classic, everyday shirt – turbocharged with hidden performance benefits. It looks and feels like it’s made from the finest quality cotton. But it’s not. It’s made from a high-specification blend of sophisticated modern synthetics, making it much more durable. It’s also lighter, more crease resistant and quicker drying.
In addition it offers a very good level of protection from the harmful effects of UV radiation, and with our Dynamic Moisture ControlTM finish, much greater comfort in hot and humid conditions. Our clever Jeans have been updated with a new slim leg fit. The light weight, comfort and practicality you love now come with a contemporary look. They’re made from a blend of natural cotton and technical Coolmax.® They dry about 30% faster than ordinary denim. In practical terms, that means overnight. So you can travel with only one pair – quite an advantage. And Minimum Layer ConstructionTM reduces weight and bulk, maximising comfort and breathability.

WOMEN’S/WARM TRAVEL
How to stop the smallest things
ruining the grandest plans
Our Sanctuary Shirt is a fine example of how we exploit technology in our designs. Incorporating Insect Shield® within its fibres, the Sanctuary Shirt becomes a fabric barrier, helping to protect you against biting insects. Practical design details such as integral drying loops, three secure pockets and cuff retaining studs make
the Sanctuary Shirt essential for the serious traveller. Made from Insect Shield® treated stretch fabric, Trailblazers are wind resistant, quick drying and ultra-light. So, whether you’re out with the mad dogs and Englishmen in the heat or you’re on a windswept beach after sunset, it’s good to know that Trailblazers will give you
all the comfort you need. You can’t beat a cool convertible on a warm summer’s day. With two shakes of a colour-coded zip, our Trailblazers Convertible quickly convert into a neat pair of capris. Smart and versatile, these trousers have two standard pockets and three more with zips to keep your valuables safe.

Insect protection that you wear Insect Shield® technology converts clothing into convenient, comfortable and effective protection against biting insects. Each Insect Shield® garment is treated with permethrin – an invisible and odourless ingredient which helps to protect against insects that carry dangerous diseases including mosquitoes, ticks, ants, fleas, chiggers and midges.
The treatment is so tightly bonded to the fabric fibres that it’ll retain its effectiveness through the expected life of the product – well beyond the limits of most fabric finishes. It took humans millions of years to get to the top of the food chain, Insect Shield® will help you stay there.

MEN’S/WARM TRAVEL
REINVENTION A Rohan Speciality
Many of our most successful clothing ideas start the same way. Take a wardrobe essential like a polo or a long sleeved top and reinvent the way it’s made without affecting the style. So now you have a far more versatile item of clothing that is more comfortable, easier to care for, lighter, more packable and more protective. This may be a simple approach, but it’s also a really, really useful one.
The Homeland Trousers are a great example of this thinking. They combine an easy-to-wear style with excellent performance credentials. The Strata Polo is a classic Rohan piece. It takes a polo shirt and reinvents it using cuttingedge fabric technology, now a good looking polo is also a technical top. And the Gridlock Crew is also ‘smart’ in both senses of the word. Technology disguised as clothing.

WOMEN’S/WARM TRAVEL
How our stealth technology has improved the classic combination.
A T-shirt and jeans may be a winning ‘dresseddown’ combination but when it comes to technical performance they rarely measure up. If the look is right for you but you want more comfort in a wide range of weather, it might be time to upgrade to our clever versions of these classics.
These clothes may look casual, but they are softer, dry faster, need less washing and ironing, and pack away much smaller. And because they are carefully designed, they help to protect you and your important possessions from everything that adventurous world travel tends to throw at you.
