Alan Ward is a world-renowned International Mountain Leader and a highly experienced travel guide. Although now in semiretirement, Alan still travels extensively and offers worldwide safety and first aid training for mountain expeditions.

training for the local mountain guides. Covid-19 prevented further training until now when Helen Menhinick and I travelled there to deliver a UIAA Mountain Skills Course and two REC First Aid Courses as volunteers. Helen and I delivered this training through our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies which meant the local mountain guides received the training without cost to them. The guides have great local knowledge. This course provides them with theory and practical knowledge and the first aid skills to be excellent guides. This gives them confidence to deal with the unexpected situations that can arise in the mountains.

Alan is a long-time collaborator with Rohan, and we are always keen to hear about his latest adventures. Here is an account of his recent trip to the Kasbah du Toubkal in Morocco to deliver a UIAA Mountain Skills Course and two REC First Aid Courses with colleague and friend Helen Menhinick.

Mountain Training in Morocco –Alan’s Story

My relationship with the Kasbah du Toubkal goes back several years when I was there to lead groups up Mt Toubkal (4167m), North Africa’s highest mountain. In 2018, on a Toubkal ascent, our guide Mohamed asked if I could provide some internationally accredited

Having been an International Mountain Leader for many years, I’m now reaching the end of my career. It’s therefore very important to me that I give something back to the mountain training system, and the work that we do with the Moroccan Mountain Guides is particularly meaningful to Helen and me. The High Atlas Mountain Guides are all exceptionally skilled and experienced but most of them don’t have internationally accredited formal qualifications, so to be able to provide them with that training is a pleasure. Working with the local culture and sharing knowledge with these mountain guides has been a fantastic and humbling experience.

a business out of walking, but more specifically getting more women into walking. I enrolled on a Hills & Moorland Leadership course to get myself qualified, and haven’t looked back since! I’ve gone on to attain many more qualifications and around 2020, I started my business Bryn Walking For Women.

Tell us more about Bryn Walking For Women. I’ve been in male-dominated environments for most of my career, and the outdoor industry is no exception. I know I certainly felt a bit intimidated when I went to get my first outdoor qualification, but I persevered and ended up really enjoying it. Something I’ve found incredibly satisfying about Bryn Walking, is the community that has developed around it. Not only has it helped these women to build their confidence, but it has also allowed them to forge new friendships and feel comfortable expressing themselves in female lead environments, which is so important.

What is your favourite memory from your years of outdoor exploring?

Helen’s passion and love for the outdoors is infectious. We caught up with her recently to learn about her experiences and find out more about her business Bryn Walking For Women.

What sparked your love for the outdoors?

When I was around 9, my mother took my sister and me with her all-girls school class on a trip up Mt Snowdon. I had never done anything like that before and had none of the correct kit, but I had a brilliant time. That trip made quite a big impression on me.

What made you decide to pursue a career in outdoor leadership?

Most of my career was in Mechanical Engineering, but once my children had left school, I needed a change. I decided to make

I have so many, but one that stands out in particular is my Mountain Leader Assessment. It was during an incredibly hot summer, we were hiking and camping for three days in an area of Snowdonia called the Moelwyns. We were put through a four-hour night time navigation task, alongside dealing with the unbearable daytime heat and fighting sleep deprivation, and we’re being assessed the whole time! It was gruelling, challenging, and brilliant. I felt like I’d really earned that certificate by the end of it!
