Embrace or escape

The longest walk – the shortest day. Glittering snows or sucking swamps, and inaugurated before 1900, this classic winter walk embraces some of the finest moorland terrain in Britain.

WORDS AND PHOTO d JOHN BEATTY

Embrace or escape

Around the turn of the last century a hiking tradition was born. Northern workers embraced the rugged moors of the Peak District and escaped the ‘dark and satanic mills’ of Manchester by yomping between Marsden and Edale on one of the shortest days of the year. Sometimes through glittering snows, often through sucking swamps and nearly always finishing in the dark, this classic winter walk is still a popular challenge and embraces some of the finest moorland in Britain. The cold stone porticos of Manchester’s Victoria Station at 7am in early January are perhaps an unlikely place to begin an adventure. Public transport was not a choice for these stalwart hikers and the walk that roughly follows the notorious twentytwo miles at the southern end of the Pennine Way was punctuated by necessity – the first train to

Marsden and the last train back from Edale. Traversing three tracts of wild moors and joining together three great summits; Black Hill, Bleaklow and Kinder Scout, it is not miles that count here, it is the time you take, and the short length of daylight in winter months. Don’t be put off though, it’s within most folk to complete this walk in around eight hours in all but the worst conditions. These northern gritstone moors are a soggy sponge of ancient peat bogs encircled by gritstone escarpments and boulder strewn tors. In summer the peat supports a dense covering of bilberry, heather and moorland grasses, a place for the red grouse, curlew and golden plover. In winter the land is frozen in deep frost, and gales from the north carry snow on snow. This is the correct time for

the Marsden to Edale adventure. The summit of Black Hill is fearfully wild, but from here on an icy blue day you will spy your next target eight miles away – the huge whaleback of Bleaklow. Beyond lies the spectacular vista of Kinder Scout with its rocky ramparts. Darkness may be approaching as you scramble up Kinder’s Seal Edge but good navigation due south across a short neck of high moorland will soon see you dropping down into the welcoming lights of Edale with its hostelries and cafes to warm your wearied legs if there’s still time. The return by train to Manchester is a chance to contemplate the lives of those who made this trek so many years before. Interesting to think that despite the unimaginable changes of life in the city, the draw to feed our souls in wild places is still as powerful as ever.

How to

KEEP WARM ON THE COLDEST DAYS The stark beauty of a winter landscape on a cold, clear day is a great way to feel truly alive. To appreciate it just needs a little more planning than a summer stroll. Be properly prepared for the cold, and the magic of quiet hills await.

Tip one

Tip two

Tip three

Tip four

Layer up

Hats and gloves

Warm drinks

Friends

We probably already know all about the advantages of layering to keep warm on wild days. What is less obvious is keeping the largest muscles of the legs protected. Think of thighs as the radiators of the body, then build your system upwards.

Heat floods away from your extremities, so no matter how thermally efficient your clothes are, keeping your head and hands warmly wrapped is essential. See rohan.co.uk for a full range of accessories.

On the coldest days, nothing quite beats getting warm from the inside out. And during the coldest months not even the purest minds would rail against a tip of something in the flask that gives your tea or coffee an extra tickle.

Close friends on the mountains aren’t just for bodily warmth in survival situations. The coldest, bleakest landscapes are transformed by swapping smiles and sharing stories with the folk that matter most to you.

In Britain it rains on average one day in three. A simple statistic that leads to either stoic resolve to get out and enjoy the green and pleasant land that has been created by this climate or to hibernate and moan about the weather. As you probably already know, Rohan are firmly in the first camp.

Rohan means protection against the fiercest elements and comfort in the wildest places. Our clothing and gear works together as a system with one clear set of principles. Everything we make is lightweight, packable, versatile, easycare and protective. Individually each principle is worthy, combined they become world beating.

It’s raining...

let’s get out Barricade

TM

Just like the full-length jackets on the facing page, BarricadeTM fabric is a no compromise, no shortcut design. It’s our class-leading waterproof fabric that was developed over many years with a clear goal in mind; to create a shell fabric with as much emphasis on breathability as on waterproof performance.

8 | Rohan Magazine January 2016 Issue

Of course BarricadeTM is waterproof. In fact it exceeds the British standard by more than ten times. It’s really not that difficult keeping rain out. After all, a black bin bag will do it. The trick is achieving maximum breathability. This is where Rohan wins. And this will have the biggest effect on your comfort.

(VEST) If you want to stay warm, it’s best to wear a fleece full of holes. That’s because the more air a fabric traps, the more efficiently it insulates. Our microrib and microgrid fabrics work far harder than normal fleece because they trap more air, preventing the loss of your body’s precious warmth.

10 | Rohan Magazine January 2016 Issue

A less dense fabric also means better packability, more effective wicking and a quicker drying time. These understated fleeces work brilliantly in the winter as a mid-layer and equally well for sundown warmth on your travels. Little wonder then that these fleeces make our best seller list all year round.

All Rohan waterproofs rely on BarricadeTM to keep you dry and comfortable. It’s a technology we developed ourselves and focuses as much attention on breathability as it does on being waterproof. It’s easy enough to keep the rain out, but encouraging moisture to escape is far more difficult. This is where BarricadeTM excels and is the reason it will keep you more comfortable, for longer, than other far more expensive shell technologies.

ESCAPE CREATIVE ESCAPE THE COLD AND TRAVEL THOUGHT? MAYBE CONTENT FROM JOHN BEATTY OR SIMILAR? IMAGES/EDITORIAL NAMIBIA??

14 | Rohan Magazine January 2016 Issue

Embrace or escape

Stepping off the mapfollowing the zebra When the sun sinks beneath the old stand of baobab trees and the insect chorus fills the scented air, it’s time to enjoy the bright lights of Namibia and gaze up at the night sky ablaze with constellations. WORDS AND PHOTOS d JOHN BEATTY

The freedom of self-drive safari camping along the Namibia-Botswana border.

There is a migration across Britain every day. A quick shower, hurried breakfast and then jump in the car ready to fight your way to work. If this has been you for a while, it may be time to take a bolder step and dance to a different drum. Following the beat of zebra hooves along the border of Namibia and Botswana sets you amongst one of Africa’s greatest migrations. Each year during the early months, the rains come to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans that border Namibia and Botswana. This sets off a migration of tens of thousands of Burchell’s or plains zebras aiming to feed on the lush grasses on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. The only package you’ll need for this area is your kit bag. Travel independently, hire a vehicle and camp ad hoc. Namibia and Botswana are perfect for this. It is a chance to break routine, live simply and touch the earth. Even armed with guide books and maps it is quickly evident that you are at the boundary of ordinary travel. Maps may tell you where you are, but not what it is like – the temperature,

the aroma of the land and the indigenous people who you’ll meet. It’s the start of true adventure. At dusk, around the campfire, a cacophony of insect noise fills the early evening air. And as the earth turns, at dawn, this is replaced with birdsong; morning doves, bulbuls and weaver finches busy building nests in the surrounding acacias. There is something strange about this part of ancient Africa that touches you deeply and gives many people a sense that they belong here. Climbing down from the tent there is the overwhelming sense of animals on the move – magnificent zebras in their thousands galloping through the dust, thousands of hooves literally shaking the ground. We are allowed to catch-up when they linger to feed on the islands of lush grass. Wide-eyed we gaze, day after day, knowing we are part of something much greater than ourselves. Getting away from the shove and clatter of everyday life in the west must be like many other escapes. Looking back from thousands of miles away it all seems so easy to do and just so obvious.

AirlightTM fabric is one of the original polyester cotton mixes developed by Rohan in the seventies. And it is the perfect starting point for ‘do anything, go anywhere’ clothing. It is a key ingredient in the success of Bags and now also in the Convey Trousers. It’s fair to say that this fabric has been proven and tested all over the world.

It is a great combination of lightweight, quick drying, comfortable and tough. And the close weave of the fabric has the extra benefit of providing excellent protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. We can safely say that Rohan will always make Bags and that they will always be made from Airlight.TM

One of the defining things about Bags is the AirlightTM fabric. It’s a perfectly balanced blend of polyester and cotton – lightweight and quick drying with excellent levels of protection from the harmful effects of UV radiation. We thought it was high time we used more of this world class fabric. AirlightTM fabric is as comfortable as it is practical to wear and it made the perfect choice for the latest chapter in the AirlightTM story. These new editions are designed in a looser, more relaxed style than our slim fitting original Bags and benefit from spacious side pockets.
